I bought an XPS directly from Dell over a year ago. I bought mine refurbished, so I only ended up paying $800. It's pretty decent, but many of the "accessories" (battery, volume buttons, mouse pad) are all starting to die off. Also, the laptop does overheat frequently. Now, this wouldn't be a problem, except for the fact that Dell has this nifty little loop-hole allowing them to get out of paying to replace any of these things for you despite the fact that you have a 2-year warranty (if you do have a warranty) that was supposed to cover ALL problems that occurred to the laptop or any of it's components. It's extremely frustrating trying to deal with customer service about this. When you contact them they will avoid answering your questions, and try to sell you products. If you ask them why you should buy a battery from Dell again instead of one from a third party (seeing as how your last Dell battery didn't fair so well), they won't be able to answer you. Then Dell tries to sell you back a new battery at $150-$300. It's all very frustrating. And I'm not the only one who had this happen to their XPS. Go to the Dell website and look up batteries and other component parts for the XPS. You will see dozens of negative reviews all telling you the same thing I have written here (all occurring exactly within one year of purchase). So, yes it is a decent lap top, but be prepared to have to pay hundreds (no exaggeration) of extra dollars to replace all the parts that will undoubtedly fail you. You can, of course, buy your replacement parts off of third party sites to save money, but it still doesn't take away the frustration of having to replace all of it. Personally, my XPS is the last Dell system I will ever be purchasing.
