I bought my HP dv9700 2 years ago and immediately noticed it liked to shut down whenever it would get a little warm. this problem was more annoying that anything else, the machine itself was fast, and i encountered no other problems with it. but when the warranty ran out, the machine began to overheat more frequently. the fan just couldn't seem to keep it cool, and no matter what i did, it just kept overheating. after much frustration in trouble shooting with HP service, i did internet research and found this particular model to have some kind of HeatSink defect, in which the computer couldn't cool itself off - check around - this happens to many, many of this model - the worst part is, even if you repair the heatsink (about $400) it continues to be frail, requiring more repair continuously over time. the way i understand it, this model has a 2 year life if you are lucky, and after that it's a paperweight.
