I have had this unit for a little more than 24 hours and am ready to write a review. This is a very impressive looking unit when you first see it, but during use proves to be quite a disappointment.
Strengths:
- Nice, clear display that shows video very well.
- Nice display for Mp3 playback: Three lines that can scroll album title & artist name (line 1), song title (line 2) ID3 tag info as well time and track number (line 3).
- Supports DVD Mp3 allowing you to fit hundreds of songs on one disk.
- Above average sound quality.
- Faceplate that is removable and can be adjusted to different angles for viewing.
- Gets lots of Ouuuuuuuu's and Ahhhhhhhh's when you show it off.
Weaknesses:
- Only supports DVD-R (will not read DVD+R or DVD+RW).
- Very slow loading Mp3 discs (CDR & DVD).
- Changing audio settings is difficult since they are buried within menus. I have some songs that are very bass-heavy that require be to turn the bass down while other songs are lacking in bass and require bass to be turned up. This simple modification is quite a pain on this unit.
- Mp3 songs start over every time the player is shut off. What this means is that if you want to quickly switch over to the radio then back to the player, the song starts over. Every time you get out get in and out of the car the song restarts. This is a terrible hassle especially for someone who listens to quite a few extended songs.
- You cannot fast forward or rewind an Mp3 track. This really stinks when you realize that the songs always start over.
- There is no way to see all of the songs on the disc. Some units (Kenwood and Pioneer) allow you to see all of the folders and tracks on the CD. This is really helpful when you have over 10 directories and over 100 songs on one disc. On the JVC, with a lot of button pressing (on the unit, the remote won't work!) you can see the first five characters of each folder (worthless), but not the songs without changing to that directory and song. In short, you had better know all of the songs, folders and their order ahead of time. Not good when you are putting over 40 directories and over 400 songs on one disc.
- The remote is bulky & does not have all of the necessary menu functionality on it.
- After running for about 30 minutes the unit is 1000 degrees hot.
- The volume buttons are not very responsive. A rotary knob would have been much better.
- Will not read WMV or Mpeg files. DVD and VCD are OK, but other formats would be great. Who is still working with VCD?
Overall this unit is quite a disappointment. It is not very user-friendly and does not perform basic tasks that you can get on a $75 unit. I will be returning it tomorrow and buying a significantly less expensive Pioneer. Hopefully the next generation product will be better.
