I was going to wait a bit longer before writing this review of the new Sony FW-373J/H 16.4" 1080P Hi Definition Notebook computer, but it's so impressive, with outstanding performance, utility, standard features, software, and has hardware packaging that is 2nd to none in this price range of c.$1250+/- notebooks, that I couldn't wait to put it in perspective, compared to other "media center" notebooks.
I bought this Sony for my wife, but it's such a gem, has incredible performance characteristics and utility features like the Blu-Ray ROM (Sony Optiarc BC5500S v1.75 firmware-Oct, 2008) optical drive, a very efficient, speedy 2.4Ghz C2Duo Intel SCR(P)-8600 CPU w/3MB L2 Cache, running a 1066Mhz FSB (front side system bus, the pathway between the 4GB of PC-6400 800Mhz SDRAM and the hard drive, ie faster is better(!)--and this is as fast as it gets-- FSB's in notebooks), that I've been using it too. A LOT!
Don't forget the 7200-RPM SATA II 2.5" HD, which is easily reached via a 2-screw trap door on the bottom of the case (as is the SDRAM, but that's only 1 screw!), which has plenty of room for most people's work, media collection, photos, applications for business and pleasure, et al. I can't imagine "upgrading/updating" this particular HD setup, as 320GB is as big as a 7200RPM HD gets right now...maybe IF Hitachi, Western Digital, or Samsung comes up with a 500GB 7200RPM notebook HD there will be a reason to upgrade, but not now!
Tonight we watched "Transporter 3" using the Sony notebook as the player, the Jason Statham action-sequel in Blu-Ray ROM format, on our Samsung 52" HDTV, the TOC (Touch of Class) Series 8000x model w/50,000 Contrast Ratio, 120Mhz Video Codec Switching, 4ms response time, etc, arguably the best LCD available today, and it was just astonishing & fantastic! We hooked everything up via a simple 10-feet-long-HDMI-Cable using the Sony FW-373J/H as the "player" with the standard Blu-Ray on-board player built into the Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium OS by Sony engineers, called "InterVideo® WinDVD® BD for VAIO" (quite a mouthful, yah? They could have just called it "Sony BluRay Player" but no, go figure!).
All you do is hook up your HDTV to one end of the HDMI cable after "sourcing it", attach the other end to the Sony notebook, insert the Blu-Ray movie into the optical drive, (with preferences enabled this happens...) and BAM! The video starts playing on the TV instantly, with full on-screen controls available for menus, setup, etc for the movie. Crazy-Bitchin-Good!
That was the deal-sealer, seeing that Blu-Ray movie via the Sony notebook tonight!! It WAS CLEAR, CLEAN, PERFECT, EVERYTHING YOU WANTED in clarity, depth of field, all that Blu-Ray HDTV goodness rolled up into a great action-movie experience like "Transporter 3"... and to see the new notebook's player and optical drive doing the duty, putting the film up onscreen with such a quick one-two-three "Play!" sequence, well, it was just great! The sound was fantastic, everything synched-up correctly with our Marantz-6800-powered audio system, enabled by a JBL Studio Sound Speaker System in all its 16-inch bass-reflex glory, and I am telling you it played purrrfectly through the Sony notebook's optical drive. No Hill For a Climber!
Now that experience is out of the way, and fully described, because it IS a fantastic feature to be able to play Blu-Ray media through the notebook, but let's talk about the CPU, the memory, the OS, the unbelievably full-featured, and strong ATI Mobile RADEON® HD PCI-Express Video Card w/512MB of discrete, dedicated DDR2 VRAM, with get this, 2280MB of "burst VRAM" available via shared memory from the SDRAM/HD system! Holy Smokes! That's quite a package!!
Some desktops don't have a better video card system than the Sony does, and this thing just SMOKES in performing its rituals, whether it's working magic with the 16.4" 1920 x 1080P NATIVE HD widescreen back-lit LCD display on photos in Corel's PC photo program, displaying 2 side-by-side web pages with Flash-Player enabled, or just simply going about the business of mundane things like working behind-the-scenes to enable crisp, clean, precise rendering of any normal project you can think of: Word Processing, film editing in Sony Vegas 5 Pro, or just plain 'being beautiful'...it's a stunning display of video power all-around!! I can't say enough about how the ATI Mobile HD Video Card w/512MB of DDR2 VRAM/SDRAM performs, because it's the best notebook display I've seen in a long, long time...bar none, including all Mac Pro displays, right up to the 17" Apple widescreen in their top-of-the-line $2700 notebook.
Our LCD screen, apparently a Samsung device as best as I could tell (they are the No.1 producer of LCD technology devices worldwide), has NO DEAD PIXELS, not a one to be found! It's clear, clean, crisp, responsive and fast in any and all circumstances, has no big "footprint" like the 18.4" widescreen notebook LCD's do, and yet there you go, there's native 1080P display power all day, all night! It's truly a fantastic, feature-laden display, one I can't say enough about.
The C2Duo 2.4Ghz CPU is F A S T, don't think it isn't! You know it's good when you see the Windows Performance scores of 5.4 to 5.9 on everything but "Gaming graphics" where the notebook scores "5.0", oh well, it's built by humans, yes? It does have a small weakness there, but that's about it! The 4GB of 800Mhz PC-6400 SDRAM does a nice job with almost any assignment, ie it's enough for virtually all Windows Vista tasks, throw in 4 to 5 open programs, some background FM music via FireFM in FireFox 3.0.7 (ditch Windows Explorer as your browser first chance you get!), and there's still 1GB of SDRAM availble for "burst" assignments.
You can order up twin 4GB DIMMs to make 8GB of SDRAM in the machine, but at this time it's prohibitively expensive @ c.$400 a DIMM, so equipping the notebook with 8GB of SDRAM is stupid right now...wait until summer, or later, when Samsung's chip supply dries up (they cornered the market on the 4GB DIMMs apparently), and you can buy a pair of 4GB DIMMs for $400 or less for both, and then it'll be a good thing to do...but not right now.
As for the network adapter, which is an Intel PCI-Express WLAN card, with A, B, G, and "Spec N"-qualified high-speed abilities, it's so seamless in its operation that I almost forgot to mention it! It just works fantastic. You should have seen my eyes when I installed iTunes 8.1 for PC the other day, and hit the "shared" Library key in iTunes, and voila! Up popped my 2TB Apple TV/iTunes Library from my G5 "SuperSystem," across my studio over in the "serious computer territory", yes, right there on the PC's desktop there was an unlimited supply of iTunes goodness, some 200GB of music, and more than 1.4TB of AppleTV movies ready for sharing on the PC! My Lordie, that was a fantastic surprise!! So I didn't have to install a bunch of music for my wife's edification...she could simply "share" my rather substantial Apple iTunes music system from across the room, a coup'de'etat if I've ever made one happen...PC and Macs living in harmony, together, functioning perfectly fine using the same music. Now that's KUHL!
What else is nice, and stands out? Well, the touch-pad works 110% to my liking, if you're not using a Mini-BlueTooth Mouse like my LogiTech V470, which only costs $38 here at Amazon.com, so there you go! Another strong point, the notebook's "A2DP" BlueTooth (stereo BlueTooth for headphones, earphones, and v2.1.x BlueTooth for external devices like a mouse) is another wonderful standard feature, so you can utilize the USB ports (3 of them, located on the right, front side of the case) for what they were meant to be used for: peripherals like a printer, scanner, etc. There's also a FireWire port, for those of you who still own FireWire movie cameras, or have external HD's with FireWire 800/400 connections, (with Oxford 924 or 912 bridge boards...these are good things), they are all GOOD TO GO with this notebook, with the conveniently placed port on the left side of the case.
You know, I should say something about how this notebook LOOKS! It's just great! It has spacey curves over to the heavy-duty magnesium-alloy body's end, which is at a set of HD hinges that will never, ever creak, groan, lack support for the display, and it looks T H I N, and subtle, and even though it weighs some 6.7 lbs w/standard battery, it doesn't look heavy and overblown, like so many of the "big generation" of PC notebooks do these days. The brushed magnesium finsh is really groovy! Clean looking! The media controls over the back-right edge of the chassis, up by the screen are appropriately placed, and work well for home-base media movies onscreen, or playing music with the optical drive, whatever!
I am glad I held out for the grey case vs. the black case, aren't all of you in this group? It just looks G R E A T with the alloy body, the two compliment each other, sort of "flow into each other" and work with the Sony Style form to make up a stunning notebook masterpiece. As a practical exercise, the Sony wins, to me anyway it does...it's just so "handsome and practically sexy-looking"... In so many notebooks there's nothing but plastic and buttons, and this machine rocks the house with heavy-duty doses of class, style, and grace of design. The key placement is a bit unusual unless you're a previous Sony owner, with the keys placed/vertically surfaced OUT of the top of the case, but with a scant 2mm of travel per key, they feel right-on, and correct for the application.
I bought an Antec® notebook cooler, the twin-fan design alloy and plastic device, for the notebook with the order, so I can't comment on its ability to cool itself without a notebook cooler, all...Read more›

Sony VAIO VGN-AR790U/B AND Sony VAIO VGN-AR890U
This will be long but it will also be very detailed, as I do have a lot of experience with Sony Vaio desktop replacement notebooks.
I'm not a hardcore tech person but I know enough to get by, and I really have a love thing going on with Sony Vaio's and a lot good things happening, in my life with Vaio's. So I guess you could say I'm passionate about them.
This is my first Amazon review, as I normally do not have the time (who really does these days?) but I do purchase, a great deal of products from Amazon and I've received so much good info out of the reviews here; so I'd like to give something back now.
The reason I list both the AR790U/B and AR890U is because they are identical notebooks; with the SINGLE exception of the AR890U having larger hard discs. Really, the hard discs are the ONLY hardware differences between the two models. Odd thing is the AR890U is currently listed here on Amazon, for a few hundred dollars less than the older AR790U/B. Amazon had incorrect spec info listed for the AR890, which they may have corrected by now, after I had spoke to them about it, about a month ago. If in doubt about specs, go to sonystyle.com and look up the AR890 specs there. Note that the AR790 has been dropped from sonystyle.com as it is a discontinued model now. I currently own and am using daily, the AR790U/B and within my business, I own 2 more AR790's and one AR890. I've been using Sony Vaio's since they were introduced back in I believe late 97' or early 98' always opting for the top of the line desktop replacement Vaio models. Basically I've purchased most of Sony's desktop replacement notebooks, over the years. Although a couple years back, I gave HP Pavilions two tries and was never really satisfied, with the overall build and experience I had with those. So take into consideration here, that I only have experience with Sony other than those two HP's.
The AR series design can be found, on a range of Vaio's dating back to late 2006/early 2007 in the AR 190 and 270 series (my first was the AR270 in early 2007). The Vaio AR series has a VERY attractive piano black high gloss exterior (entire lid only) that always seems, to get attention out and about, from coffee shops and airports to boardrooms. People will ask about it and make comments about how nice it looks. The chrome lining around the side is also nice and overall, this notebook design seems to look timeless; classy and elegant as if it will take many years, for it to look dated which is nice for most end-users, who will want to hold onto it, for years to come. The notebook is large and heavy but it does not seem to look or feel too thick when closed. Although I had a hard time, finding a notebook bag, that could fit it and that I liked, until I came across a very nice one: http://www.amazon.com/SIERRA-Wenger-Single-Gusset-Computer/dp/B000BYSUPW/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1219787331&sr=8-1 . The image here doesn't do it justice; this is a very nice looking bag which can very easily hold the Vaio AR, extra batteries Logitech wireless mouse and even folders (in the same compartment as the notebook). Circuit City carries this bag in-store if you want to check one out. Padding all around and very stylish inside out, with a very strong build quality. The reason I mention it is because many bags, will not be able to hold the large AR. Alright back to the notebook........
Even after a year and a half with this design, I'm still unimpressed with the mouse buttons on the AR. Yes, they work when you click them but if there is one thing wrong with the design of this notebook; it is the mouse buttons which somehow feel dated and clunky. Like I mentioned I'm a 10-year notebook user but these mouse buttons were placed at the edge of the notebook and that just makes for an odd experience, even after time. My solution to that has been a Logitech wireless mouse which I also highly recommend. I currently use The Logitech MX Revolution which comes with the MX5500 Bluetooth keyboard combo. Previously I had been using the Logitech VX revolution which is a smaller mouse but better suited for travel and if you don't want to use an external keyboard. Regardless the Logitech mice/keyboards work very well with the AR's and trust that if you give one of the mice a try, you'll never want to handle the AR's pad again. Along the same lines, I also use an external display (Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM - 24") via HDMI and it works flawlessly as a desktop setup. I honestly could not be more pleased with the above combination as it all works very well, regardless of the fact that I have just over 80 programs installed on this system. A word of warning, if you try a wireless mouse, you may not ever want to use the touchpad again. Every time I travel and use the AR I reach for my Logitech because the touchpad just doesn't feel right anymore, almost as bad as trying to switch from using your right hand to your left hand. Keep in mind that the newer MX5500 Combo comes with Bluetooth so that you can connect the keyboard and the mouse without the USB receiver. This is great to travel with the mouse and use it without having to plug in the USB receiver. A hard mouse pad that can be used on carpet or anywhere also comes in handy too. I use the 1030 Surface Archetype made by Func Industries, which also fits in my notebook bag with no problem, right underneath the notebook.
Aside from the mouse buttons, most other keys and buttons are pretty well laid-out. There is no separate number pad even though there appears to be more than enough room in which Sony could have placed one, but that's not something Sony does on notebooks (as far as I've seen in the past). The keys feel solid as if they will last for those who won't be using an external keyboard. In the past, some Sony models keys would pop out over time. With the HP Pavilion desktop replacement I had tried, it got way too hot, to the right of the mouse pad, right where you rest your hand. On the AR it does get pretty warm right in the same area but not HP cook a steak hot like I had experienced. Warm but I don't see anyone with sensitive skin or not, finding it to be too hot (let's say a few digits below the too hot level). The inner plastic around the keyboard and screen is a very dark gray color rather than the piano black top exterior. At first glance this could look a bit generic to some people but for me it all flows just fine. When the unit is on there is a nice looking Sony logo that has a solid white glow that remains on, just below the LCD screen. The web cam like most, is right above the screen and is almost hidden not only because of the dark finish of the frame but because its behind the frame as if the entire frame around the screen is like one piece of clear glass or plastic, with the camera behind it.
The hook to keep the notebook locked was a bit of a letdown because it has no spring action. This means that to have the hook lock/unlock into the lid, you need to slide a button which is not as smooth as it could have been. So when you close the lid, it won't automatically lock; you have to slide the button. This could be a good design feature in regards to opening and closing the lid often. It just seems to be that that hook gets in my way sometimes.
The speakers, built into the lid, right below the AMAZING screen, are nicely integrated into the design but I do have to say that the HP notebooks I had, both had louder speakers (I think one was even advertised as having a sub-woofer???). The Speakers on the AR do work and are loud enough to be heard, should a group of people be gathered around your notebook. However they just aren't the loudest ones out there, I'm sure of that. Again I use that Samsung mentioned above and through the single HDMI connection, I hear through the Samsung's built speakers and rarely use the AR's.
The media buttons, CD eject button and the 2 programmable buttons are placed well for those of us who don't need to have access to media buttons when the lid is closed.
Sony puts stickers all over the deck, and let me just tell you that if you don't peel them off carefully, you'll end up with a sticky mess, that will probably stick around, for as long as you'll own the notebook. On one AR I had left over glue, from a sticker to the right of the touch pad, bother me enough that I got to rubbing very hard with glass cleaner and sure enough it came off, but the paint had faded a bit in that one spot. On next AR, I didn't want to make the same mistake, so I asked tech support (THAT'S LEVEL 2 SAN DIEGO TECH SUPPORT; more on this later) and they said WD-40 does the trick. So WD-40, a little rubbing and that glue mess came right off and didn't damage the paint at all this time.
Speaking of the paint, sadly on every AR (excluding the one just purchased 2 months ago) will chip in ONE spot. That would be the area right around the slot for the Memory Stick and SD Card. It's happened enough times where I know that if you are going to be inserting and removing cards frequently, then you'll want to try and get used to guiding the cards right in and not letting them rub against the sides because rather quickly (a few months) the paint, in just that small area, chips and you are left with a purple plastic underneath. The good news is that it's a very small area which most people won't even notice unless they get up close, as in eyes 5 inches away or closer. Other than that, the paint and exterior have held up very well, on the AR's (oldest being an AR270 purchased early 2007, which again has the same body as the AR790 and 890).
These AR's can get pretty hot underneath but if you've used other desktop replacements such as HP's, then you like me, won't find the unit hotter than other desktop replacements...Read more›

The Basics
Processor: Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 45nm Penryn series Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor, which has a 2.50 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a super-sized 6 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. And you'll be able to encode video on-the-go and watch HD movies with Intel HD Boost.
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:
Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

Hard Drive: This system offers a total of 500 GB of hard disk drive space from two 250 GB drives (5400 RPM). These Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives also quicken the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 1 x 2 GB, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity for this notebook, and also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed.

DVD/CD Drive: This Sony digital studio notebook is capable of both playing back Blu-ray Disc movies in stunning clarity, as well as burning HD Camcorder content in its original 1080p high-definition resolution to BD-RE/BD-RE DL (dual layer) discs (25 GB single layer disc to 50 GB on a double layer disc). It will also play your current library of purchased and burned disc content. This notebook can also write standard DVD and CD media. The BD drive offers 2x speed for reading and writing BD-RE discs, 1x BD-RE DL writing, as well as offering the following read speeds: 2x BD-R/BD-RE and 1.6x BD-R/RE DL. It also offers the following write speeds for standard DVD and CD discs: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 8x for single-layer DVD+R and DVD-R, 8x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 8x CD-R/RW, and 5x for DVD-RAM.

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard (2.5mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad.
Screen, Video & Audio This notebook offers a 17-inch screen with a widescreen 1920- x 1200-pixel resolution. And thanks to Sony's XBRITE-HiColor panel technology, the flat-panel screen will deliver dazzling colors and sharp images whether displaying a DVD movie, television show, or web content. It delivers deep blacks and bright whites, true-to-life color, and razor-sharp detail. And with a glare filter and anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection, you’ll experience a beautifully clear image.
Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 8600M graphics card, which provides up to 1023 MB of available RAM/video memory (with 256 MB dedicated) for unmatched HD video performance on a notebook PC. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), the 8600M lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications. Experience real-time photo editing, or immerse yourself in the most complex, true-to-life gaming environments. The audio card includes Sony Sound Reality technology with DSD (Direct Stream Digital) support.
Using the included ATI TV Wonder, you can receive NTSC (standard broadcast) and ATSC (digital, HD) signals as well as get digital cable channels with the Cable Card (available from compatible cable services). It also includes stereo speakers (3 watts apiece for 6 watts of total power) and an internal 5-watt subwoofer. The audio card includes Sony Sound Reality technology with DSD (Direct Stream Digital) support.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You also get super-fast wired connectivity, with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000).
With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones as well as enjoy wireless stereo music streaming (thanks to its embedded A2DP profile). These are the things that sold me on this particular VAIO:
Under $1000
Huge resolution (1600x900)
Blu-Ray
Wireless N
Amazing dolby sound
Keyboard has independently isolated keys
The fact that it is relatively light weight and looks amazing was just a bonus.
Some impressions after several days of use:
The touchpad is superior to those on dell laptops I've owned.
The speaker is huge, it spans almost the width of the entire laptop.
The media buttons, especially av mode, are slick.
Blu-ray playback is flawless.
Battery life out of the box was about 3 hours, but using heavily optimized settings (in vaio control center) I've achieved upwards of 5 hours.
Webcam+Mic+Speakers = very high quality skype calls, better than my bluetooth headset.
The location of the power button and charging plug-in is really, really slick.
Only frustration:
I have not been able to output via HDMI at 1080p, despite being hooked up to a 42" 1080P LCD. 720P works fine, but for some unknown reason 1080P is grayed out in the settings.

HP Pavilion HDX18-1180US 18.4-Inch Laptop Review

HP Pavilion HDX18-1180US 18.4-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As compared to other laptops at roughly the same price point, this computer is a much, much better deal. I couldn't believe it when I saw it.
I bought this the 1st day it went on sale at Amazon - was literally about to pull the trigger on another laptop, but this popped up new on a final scan, so I bought it instead.
Main features that make it a great buy for the price are:
- A better, faster processor that is also Intel's latest offering (Quad Core Q9000)
- Lots of memory (4G)
- A bigger hard drive (500G)
- A larger screen (18.4")
- A Blu-Ray drive (for HD movies)
I wanted a very high performance laptop for under $2,000 - and was especially keen to find something with killer processor speed, a graphics card to drive 2 external HD monitors, and a big laptop screen.
I use the machine for general business purposes, but also most importantly for web development work running Drupal and an Apache development server on the machine, along with big programs like Dreamweaver and Photoshop - all running pretty much at once. I do not use for gaming, but believe it would be great for that, too. I also don't use so much for video / movies, even though it is heavily designed with that in mind.
I extensively researched machines from Dell, Alienware, Sony, Asus, and other leading vendors (I didn't want a Mac, so didn't compare against that). I'm not a hard core techie, but I wanted the best I could buy, so I also looked at the Intel site and their processor specs, visited the geek blogs to get the latest gossip on processor performance, etc.
So far I couldn't be happier with the machine! It is great. Very, very fast. Laptop screen is large and super high quality. The keyboard is really lovely - very smooth, like silk.
A few notes on things I've learned about the machine so far:
- It is a big laptop. That's probably obvious from the 18.4" screen, but it is also pretty heavy and the power cord/transformer is bigger and heavier than normal (takes a lot of power to fuel the processor and screen). So while the computer is certainly portable, it sure doesn't fit in your back pocket. If you are a highly mobile worker, this might be a factor.
- Baseline graphics card will support dual external monitors and/or an HD TV connection. I am currently running 1 external 1680x1050 plus laptop screen, but will be adding 2nd external soon (the cabling for doing this is a bit confusing, but I think I now have it figured out).
- The entire HDX line of laptops is new (introduced Fall '08 from what I understand) and there is not yet a complete line-up of accessories available. For instance, I was thinking to get a docking station to configure my monitors, but only docking station that currently works with the machine is the HP QuickDock or xB4 and these do not have digital video/monitor ports (VGA only) which renders them pretty useless if you have high performance monitors. As well, they do not yet sell 'official' HP memory upgrades for this machine yet (tech support indicates they probably will later this year, so worth checking if that's important to you). In the meantime, you can use off-the-shelf memory from Amazon or wherever. Memory is DDR2 800Mhz 200 pin (which isn't stated anywhere obvious that I saw), but can be switched over to DDR3 if you upgrage to the enhanced graphics card.
- After many painful hours on hold and being routed from one tech support rep to another, I learned that there is a dedicated tech support group for the HDX laptops. For some reason, they provide only the main number in the collateral that comes with the machine - and no one at that number seems to know about this special group. But eventually somebody figured to route me there and I recommend you go there directly. 866-408-5408.
Overall, I love this machine and highly recommend it to others.

The Basics
Processor: With four execution cores, the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9000 blows through processor-intensive tasks in demanding multitasking environments and makes the most of highly threaded applications. Part of Intel's "Penryn" line of 45nm processors, it features new hafnium-infused circuitry to reduce electrical current leakage in transistors and help this laptop run cooler. It also features Intel Trusted Execution Technology, which provides hardware-based mechanisms that help protect against software-based attacks and protects the confidentiality and integrity of data stored or created on the client PC.
Whether you're creating multimedia, annihilating your gaming enemies, or running compute-intensive applications at one time, new quad-core processing will change the way you do everything. The Q9000 has an ultra-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 6 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
You get four dedicated, physical threads help operating systems and applications deliver additional performance that enhance multi-tasking and multi-threaded performance across many types of applications and work loads. The Smart Memory Access feature improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed. The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications. And with the Intel 64 Architecture, the processor can access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel 64 Architecture can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory.

Hard Drive: The extra-large 500 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
You'll enjoy enhanced hard drive protection with HP's Protectsmart, which includes a 3D accelerometer that safeguards your data by parking your hard drive if your notebook detects any range of motion, such as being knocked off your desk, falling or taking abuse.

Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. This notebook has an amazing 8 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

DVD/CD Drive: This HP notebook offers the next generation of DVD entertainment with the Blu-ray ROM optical drive, which provides the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound as well as backward compatibility with standard DVD movie discs as well as content burned onto DVD±RW. It also incorporates a DVD±RW writer that can also burn CDs, which is compatible with dual-layer (DL) discs that can hold up to 8.5 GB of data.

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard (with integrated numeric keypad) and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 16-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which has a widescreen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels--a perfect 16:9 aspect ratio for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen. The backlight on the VGN-AW230J is poorly designed, resulting in an area approximately 0.5 cm high at the bottom of the panel that is evenly and significantly brighter than the rest of the panel. This same effect can be seen to a lesser extent along the sides of the panel. The opposite effect occurs at the bottom corners of the panel, where the backlight appears pinched and at times completely black.
Sony initially told me this was a defect and sent a technician to repair the laptop. After the technician replaced the LCD panel (and broke the bezel in the process), the problem remained. Sony then requested that I send the laptop to their repair center. The repair center has since notified me that the strip of light is "normal," and that despite multiple unnecessary repairs made at their suggestion, they will not provide me a with new, unmodified laptop.
Sony has also added a vaguely worded article to their knowledgebase describing the problem as normal. While they refer to the problem as a "glow," which can in fact be normal for some backlights, this is not how the problem presents itself. http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/searchEntry.do?locale=LA_eng_US&usemicrosite=true®ion=UMRE_UNITEDSTATES_2_5&sonyregion=US&searchString=lcd%20bright&product=SG_VGNAW230J_1_5&sonytemplate=1&sonymodel=VGNAW230J
I was quite surprised with Sony's response given the marketing behind this particular laptop's display and their direct support of Adobe's color profiles. If you're looking for a laptop with a clear, even, and professional display, look elsewhere.

From the moment I opened up the box and pulled out this laptop I was amazed. Aesthetically the laptop is very beautiful, has a sleek and streamlined feel to it, yet it does not give off the feeling that anything has been compromised or removed in order to give it that "streamlined" look.
The screen is the perfect size, not too big or not too small, however if you are used to smaller laptops this thing is a behemoth - of course in a good way. The picture is crystal clear, has stunning visuals, a diverse assortment of extremely vivid and vibrant colors, and the widescreen complements the perfect visuals of the laptop and is particularly beneficial when watching movies or doing just about anything. The Blu-ray Disc is also a HUGE plus. Instead of having to go out and spend hundreds on a Blu-Ray Disc player, this laptop provides you with one and ports to connect to your television if you want.
Concerning the sound and audio, it is very clear, pristine, and makes you feel like you are in a theatre. Nevertheless, I do agree with the first reviewer it is relatively quiet at full settings - however it never compromises the quality of the sound no matter how loud or quiet it gets.
Among other things, one of my absolute favorite features about this laptop is the keyboard. All the keys are widely spaced, and as someone who spends countless numbers of hours typing, this thing is a dream. With other laptops I always have to look at the keyboard while typing to make sure I do not accidentally type the wrong letter. However, with this laptop, I never have to look at the keyboard and be concerned with typing in the wrong letter. Not once have I made a typo on this review or any other document I have written so far.
Individually analyzing all the aspects of this laptop will take too long and will be a hard read. For that you can just read the overview of this product on its homepage. I am reviewing this product as someone who has the laptop, knows the "inside information," and all of its familiarities.
Again, I am no expert on laptops, their technical capabilities, etc.; however I can say with supreme confidence that every aspect and every dimension of this laptop is probably the best out there and has exceeded all my expectations.
Great Deal, Great Buy, Excellent Laptop.
