Sony MEX-BT5000 - Radio / CD / MP3 player - Full-DIN - in-dash - 52 Watts x 4 Review

Sony MEX-BT5000 - Radio / CD / MP3 player - Full-DIN - in-dash - 52 Watts x 4
Average Reviews:

Been a Sony car head unit user since many years ago I decided to give it a try and as a one solution to integrate Ipod and a BT hands free in one unit so let's say it could be worse. Installation is a breeze because there isn't extra speakers or mic to set. Just hook the speakers and power cables as any standard unit, plug the Ipod adapter, set and match the cell and that's it. Be aware it is hard to read the display when the sun hit it. Also digits are very small.
Unfortunately Ipod integration is a disaster as other reviewers noted with the XA-110IP. I also tested a ipod2car 2nd gen (with it's Sony interface wiring harness) which work great on my other older Sony head units but in the MEX-BT5000 it is not recognized. Is a shame because it's way better than the XA-110IP.
Sound through the bluetooth interface is a joke. Have tried several devices and they sound terrible. Is like hearing music through your home phone.
Cell Bluetooth interface has some issues and callers report severe echo. Having the mic integrated in the head unit has it's cons, setting a mic on better places could improve a lot the echo but unfortunately that's not possible.
Another concern is that the MEX-BT5000 doesn't have the option to update it's bluetooth software to keep it more integrated with newer phones.
On another vehicle I have both a standard Sony Head Unit and a Parrot 3200 bluetooth hansdfree device and this one is the best handsfree I have seen so far, it's so user friendly, has so many features like the phone book which is spelled through the speakers, and it's software can be updated by the user with a bluetooth equiped laptop as I already did. I located the mic in a optimum place and callers hear me clearly.
It's a fact: a company only dedicated to make stand alone handsfrees or ipod interfaces will have a better product against a manufacturer that makes them all by itself.
If you can afford it go for a dedicated Handsfree like the Parrot 3200 (sound goes through the stock speakers) and choose a better (non Sony for now) Ipod interface. If budget is tight just go for a dock hooked to the Sony aux input and control the iPod directly.

Sony NVU73T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

Sony NVU73T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I am in the market to get a GPS unit for my car, so after reading some mixed reviews about the Sony NV-U73 I decided to try it out for myself. Now I am a Sony fanboy so I was hoping that this product would do very well for me, especially since it was on sale at the local Radio Shack.
Let me start with the good:
1. Beautiful display, bright with lots of contrast.
2. POI's come up on the GPS as their logo...ie If I was driving past a Citgo, the Citgo logo was displayed on the GPS...very cool.
3. The unit will tell you which lane to be in for complicated exits/turns on the highway. When you approach an exit, it goes split screen and shows you which lane you should be in to take the exit.
4. Fairly accurate to tell you when turns are approaching.
5. Displays your speed.
6. Mount is very stick and can move in 360 degrees.
Now the cons:
1. SLOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW...slow to pick up a signal, super slow to re-calculate a route, and tooth-numbing slow to calculate an initial route.
2. It can't handle hypens, ie if a house number is 28-44, your out of luck cause it can't find that.
3. Minor gripe, but the RDS antenna is not built in.
4. Takes forever to search POI's by name.
5. Mapping alogrithem is good, but not the best out there.
So, if this unit wasn't so slow it would be great. But it was taking about 3-4 minutes to acquire the GPS satellites, and another 2-3 minutes to calculate routes. Not helpful if you're in an unfamiliar location.
There are better units out there for the same price. Get one of those.

Sony TDM-BT1 Digital Media Port Bluetooth Adaptor Review

Sony TDM-BT1 Digital Media Port Bluetooth Adaptor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this item two months ago and find a serious problem with that. When I tried to use it together with my Sony DVD Home Theater which has a wireless surrounding system, it failed to work. I have to either unplug the S-AIR model(which means you will have 3.1 surrounding instead of 5.1) or put my bluetooth devices close enough to the adaptor(which makes Bluetooth meaningless). I tried to swich the channel of the S-AIR but it failed to work. Either the adaptor or the S-AIR model doesn't work.
If your system doesn't have the S-AIR model, this item is perfect to buy. But if your system does include the S-AIR model, you'd better make another choice.

Sony Clie PEG-UX50 Handheld Review

Sony Clie PEG-UX50 Handheld
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had an older Sony Clie for a few years. I was thoroughly impressed with that one. It served me well. I then had to replace it, and was solidly leaning toward another Sony product. The features of the UX50 series impressed me very much. But it does have some shortcommings.
Pros:
* Small size. Without a doubt, this is a great unit that fits nicely in my shirt pocket.
* Beautiful screen. It is clear and bright. It is a bit smaller than the older unit, but it is perfectly legible.
* Lots of internal memory. This means I can record a bunch of voice memo's or quick low-res pics from the built in camera w/o using a memory stick.
* Toolbar. There is a little toolbar along the side next to the silk to pull up commonly used features quickly. (like clock, speaker and memory stick media info)
* Built in Keyboard. I love it. It even has a backlight. Not too difficult to use, unlike smaller kbds on other units. The keys are slightly raised.
* Landscape working environment. The "silk" is along the side, and when not being used, the silk can be hidden giving an expanded screen to show text or other items in the silk area. This widescreen mode is a much more efficient use of screen real-estate.
* New handwriting recognition. Decuma is very natural, and has a very good recognition rate. But... see below...
* Rotate/Swivel screen. Use the unit as a micro-laptop, or as a micro-tablet.
* Bluetooth and WiFi. Very easy to setup and use.
Cons:
* This unit only works in landscape mode. I prefer holding the unit in my hand in portrait mode. There doesn't appear to be any setting in software to change this.
* The design favors wireless hotsync, since USB cable is very awkward to plug into side of unit. The cradle should provide the USB connection, and when inserted in the cradle, the USB connection is passed through the cradle (one less wire to insert)
* The battery life is terrible on the UX50 (even compared to the three year old unit I replaced). Perhaps the keyboard light uses up much more energy.
* The memory stick and stylus can come out too easily. I have nearly lost my stylus twice. The end of the memory stick protrudes just a bit too far, and can be easily unlocked.
* New Graffiti is difficult to get used to after a few years of proficiency with the old Graffiti. Some of the strokes are not as easy to use. Perhaps I'll get used to it, but my entry rate is significantly slower.
* Decuma takes up a large amount of screen space when used. There doesn't appear to be any way to shrink it. Also when in wide screen mode, decuma still only uses 2/3 of the screen (the rest of the screen is unusable)
* Decuma should be used in Portrait mode (replacing the Silk). This would free up more screen space, and would still be natural.
* The speaker mute feature should have a timeout, so I can mute for only 1/2 hour or so while in a meeting, but then get my audible alarms afterward.
* Cannot "type" special symbols from the keyboard. I use the bullet symbols all the time, but must enter them using graffiti.
I like the unit. Everybody I show it to is very impressed. The hardware is well designed. If they come out with software that fixes some of my above issues, then I would wholeheartedly recommend this above any thing else presently available.

Sony DPF-V1000 10-Inch Digital Photo Frame Review

Sony DPF-V1000 10-Inch Digital Photo Frame
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having upgraded from a smaller Philips digital photo frame, the Sony DPF-V1000 is a welcome surprise.
Before getting in to the meat of the review, I feel it's worth pointing out a couple of improvements in the product right up front.
A lot of reviews here complain about three common gripes:
- the illuminated Sony logo on the frame
- when you're in date/time mode, the frame only displays the date and time the photo was taken
- non-camera images don't display
I bought my frame on June 28th 2009 and all these items have either been fixed, or the other reviewers didn't read the manual far enough. The illuminated Sony logo can be turned off via the setup options now. There is a smorgasbord of date and time modes available too, most of which will display the current date and time rather than the date and time the photo was taken. And finally, the non-camera images problem seems vastly reduced now. I filled my frame with all sorts of images including straight-from-the-camera JPGs and ones that had been altered via Photoshop. Out of 400 images, only two didn't display, and they turned out to be TIFF images I'd put on by mistake. Otherwise, images taken from 8 or 9 different makes and models of camera all showed perfectly, as well as those taken from 5 different cellphone cameras.
So on to the frame itself - what's it like. Oddly, bigger than you might think. OK so you can read the dimensions in the product specs but when it arrives, the box is huge, and the frame is much larger than you might imagine. The quality of the LCD panel seems to be top notch with a bright, clear display and a pretty wide viewing angle. The screw-in "foot" which makes up the frame's stand is quite long (for stability) which means that you can't push this frame up against a wall when placing it on furniture - it's going to stand out quite a way. You can hang it on the wall though - it has keyed notches in the back for that purpose. The frame can be oriented in landscape or portrait mode and it auto-rotates the pictures to suit. The picture display itself can be "original aspect" which shows the whole picture with black bars padding the screen where necessary, or it can be "zoom to fit" in which case the image is zoomed slightly to entirely fill the display.
The frame comes with 1Gb of built-in memory as well as memory card slots for most types of card. There is one gotcha here though which isn't mentioned in the manual, and is buried deep in the product FAQ on Sony's website : when you connect this frame to your PC via USB, you can ONLY upload images to the frame's inbuilt memory. Any cards plugged in do not show up - you either need to load them up separately, or copy images to them using the frame's inbuilt copy tools. Whilst this isn't a biggie, if you don't have a separate card reader for your chosen type of memory card, it's a pain having to shuffle images everywhere. Having said that, 1Gb of onboard memory holds a respectable number of images - enough that you might not need an expansion card. Realistically, I think the card slots are there for straight-from-the-camera image viewing, rather than long-term storage.
There are plenty of setup options to keep the both the nerdiest photo frame enthusiast and the absolute beginner happy. One thing I was pleased to see was the option to set the inbuilt clock to 24 hour mode. Why anyone still uses AM/PM in this day and age is a mystery to me, yet so many consumer electrical products insist on the 12 hour format. Not so in this case. As well as the clock, there's a calendar built in too, and in many of the display modes, you can show the clock and/or calendar along with the photo. Another nice feature here - you can set the date display to American or rest-of-world - ie. month-day-year or day-month-year respectively. The clock has an alarm mode which can be turned on or off using a slide switch on top of the frame. Seems a little pointless to me, but then I have a clock radio to wake me up in the morning.
The included remote control is a nice feature. My old Philips frame had no remote so all changes needed to be done using the frame's hardware buttons. With the Sony remote, you can fiddle with the photo frame remotely, including all the setup and display features. It has hidden benefits too - for example if you've got the frame set to refresh every half hour and you decide you don't like the current picture, you don't need to wait - just click 'next' on the remote and on you go.
As with most digiframes, this one has an auto on/off function where you can tell it when you want it to turn itself on and off. It has a simple and complex mode of operation for this feature. In simple mode, you just give it an on and off time and that's it. In complex mode (the default setting) you can set multiple on/off times for individual days of the week. A little too much gravy for a photo frame if you ask me.
The slideshow modes have the usual array of fades and swipes, as well as sequenced or random image mode. For the most part, you'll typically end up in random picture mode, and random fade/swipe mode. The slideshow delay has several preset options from every 3 seconds right up to once a day for the picture change. Common choices like 5 minutes, 10 minutes and half an hour are all present and correct.
You can do some rudimentary image editing in the frame although any serious amount of image touchup is out of the question. It has a scrapbook mode where you can frame the pictures with backgrounds and other add-on graphics although it does seem a bit pointless to buy a large digiframe and then deliberately shrink the images you're displaying on it ....
In short - this frame has more than enough features for the technophile, whilst being pretty easy to just pick up and use for those who want to throw some photos on and be done with it. You can't argue with the clarity of the LCD panel either. All in all, a good choice if not a little pricey. Sure you're paying for the Sony name, but if they did an identical model with all the frills removed - ie. no touchup mode, no alarm, no scrapbook mode and no card slots, that would be a product with more mass-market appeal. That being said, I don't think you'll regret this purchase - it simply is that good.
So why 4 stars and not 5? Well the internet is full of people who either think product X is the best thing since sliced bread, or have an axe to grind with the manufacturer. Those two review types account for 5-star and zero-star reviews. Very few products warrant a full-on 5-star review because most products have one or more features that a chunk of the buyers won't like. So 4 stars is my rating here - ie. it's a bloody good piece of kit but it's not perfect. I don't think the perfect 5-star digital photo frame exists yet.

Sony Ericsson W810i Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 MP Camera, MP3/Video Player, Memory Stick Duo--International Version with No Warranty (Black) Review

Sony Ericsson W810i Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 MP Camera, MP3/Video Player, Memory Stick Duo--International Version with No Warranty (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My previous phone was a Nokia 6600. It had a slow interface for 2006 and come on, I wanted to try somethingn new.Initially, I had planned on exploring my chances of buying a Treo but due to the rates, I gave up my plan. Without much pondering, I went and purchased a Sony Ericsson W810i. Now, it's been four weeks. Let me just give you a brief run thru of features, pros and cons.
Features
1. This phone is an mp3 player. This phone is a torch/semi flash light(with an SOS signal that can be configured). This phone has flash capability and further doubles up into a digital camera. Overall, it saves a lot of space to use this phone instead of just going out with a standalone mp3 player or/and a digital camera
2. The interface is fast. It takes around 8 seconds to get an auto focus and click a picture using the camera. I'll try and explain - to come out of the screensaver you need half a second, to activate camera using the shortcut it takes 3 seconds, a further 2 seconds for auto focus and an additional 1 second to click you picture. Overall,8 seconds to click one image. You can browse thru pictures very quickly. It's around 7 times faster than my Nokia. Images can be clicked in sepia, black and white, solarise(kinda yellowey), negative and normal modes. Brightness can be reduced within the click of a button. I noticed grains on images of larger size. I don't recommend using the flash camera unless you really must. Plus while clicking a video, the light goes on and off, if the flash light is turned on.
3. The build quality on the phone is both good and bad. I love the keypad and it is a major improvement from the 800i and sundry walkman phones. It took me three days to get used to the keypad. The dictionary like function on the phone keeps a track of all the words you spell. So they're definitely there the next time around. The front of the phone seems to appear too plastic. Especially the silver scroll keys and sometimes can make your phone look like a dummy piece. The sound speakers are situated on the backside of the phone and can be used conveniently even when the phone is upside down. You can insert your memory stick pro cards even when the phone is switched on. There is NO CAMERA SHUTTER like the previous installment of this phone (800i) The power button is placed most effectively just like the volume buttons on the right side of the phone which can be used for a host number of features.
4. The internal memory of this phone is 22mb and the accompanied card contains 512mb worth of memory. The usable memory, however, is only 431mb. Upon connecting to the pc, both are instantly recognized and act as removable drives on the "my computer" icon. The accompanied software is almost brilliant. I loved "Disc2phone" and there is so much more I keep discovering about the other programs. Despite lacking an English Manual, I found I didnt need one because I don't know too many people who would buy a sony ericsson phone and not be techies in their own rights who like to configure things on their own.
5. The bundled earphones are sublime. I cannot beleive the sound on these. They cancel all the noises in a room and it's a pleasure listening to beethoven playing away or Enya's mesmerising voice or even Tool's prog metal for that matter. The speakers are satisfactory and could have been louder. If used as a stand alone mp3 player with earphones, the phone would stand for around 6-7 hours.Playing the music without using earphones can eat up battery depending on the volumes of course. It supports m4a, mp3 and aac formats(and a few other formats)
6. The messages memory of the phone is limited to around 150+ messages and that is a big blunder. Despite having a 512mb of external storage the phone cannot accommodate a mere 200 messages. The size of notes is limited and you need to make a second note to carry on. Bluetooth transfers to Samsung,Nokia phones runs at 20kbps while it's a consistent 40kbps for Sony Ericsson phones. Very good for transferring media.
Pros
- It can be called an ipod replacement. I don't use mine quarter as much as I used to. This is owing to the absolutely brilliant earphones that sit within your ear and help you celebrate your time.
- I love how the phone slides into a digital camera. Good build quality for the particular feature.
- Good standby, saves battery, easy to work with 50% brightness. Even when I reduce brightness from 100% to 50% (lowest possible) there is hardly any noticeable difference on the screen. The keypad is much lighter but that's hardly noticeable.
- Fast processor, super graphics and wallpaper options, includes a good browser, calendar, good default themes
- The accompanied torch can be used to change a flat tire and can be switched on for 25mins even when the remaining battery is only 15%. (tried and tested)
- Good keypad(KEY FEATURE), good playlist configuring options
- Excellent software for the phone, mp3s can transferred at variable bit-rates without taking too long
- Excellent, fast log, the phones keeps track off the last ten numbers you've messaged and keeps them around for easy usage
- It's easy to store numbers cause the phone prompts to save numbers when a call from an unknown number ends
- Great handsfree
- There is a memory stick converter (The longer ones used in cameras) and that is a handy thing
- The MACRO mode helps in copying handwritten/type written documents using the camera
Cons
- too plastic, looks a bit boring too soon, screen can be scratched if no touchscreen is present
- the accompanied tones for messages is sad, the message memory is very limite (Big DEMERIT) and the size of a note is limited
- Call quality is not as good as can be
- sometimes it takes over a minute for the phone to recognize it has been plugged into a USB slot
- the accompanied FM radio needs to be in place to avoid screechiness in sound and proper volume
- Even though the phone provides 512mb worth of external memory, only 431mb is useable. Ideally, i'd have liked a one gig card so I could have doubled on my usage.
- Not enough upgradations over the W800i. People can settle for that phone because it has a slightly better talk life
- IT HAS NO ENGLISH MANUAL
- noticeable grains on 2megapixel images
Conclusion,
All though I am very happy with this phone, I cant help but throw a fit over the limited message storage, you can save messages onto your pc but come on, who's gonna do that?
Buy this phone if you like what you read. Not enough reasons to upgrade for 800i owners. BUT this phone has more appeal than 800i and has better more smooth graphics. There is a much better display and there is an improvement of 25% which I just noticed. However, unlike the 550i , there are no three way speakers and that makes "Stereo Widening" impossible.
Overall rating - 7/10
Very little to complain about,really
Good luck,fellow techies

The Sony Ericsson W800 was a big hit. Now, here comes the sequel, the W810. All the same great Walkman features are here, along with robust phone functions, but now you get quad-band GSM, a larger and brighter display, and perhaps most importantly, support for EDGE high speed data. In addition to a powerful and easy-to-use Walkman music player, the W810 boasts a 2-megapixel auto-focus camera with flash, a Memory Stick Duo card slot, Bluetooth, and a speakerphone. Simply put, this baby's loaded.
Design The W810 follows a long tradition of beautifully designed and crafted phones from Sony Ericsson. The same candy-bar style that graced the W800 is here, as is the horizontally-oriented camera unit on the back of the phone, allowing you to hold the phone just as you would a camera when you're taking pictures. The W810's screen sports 176 x 220 pixel resolution with support for 262,000 colors. Quick access buttons below the screen make it easy to control the phone's Walkman music features, while a five-way center button controls most of the phone's menus and features.
The W810 contains 20 MB of embedded memory, but as mentioned, a Memory Stick Duo slot is provided, and it also supports Pro Duo cards, giving you storage capacities of 2 GB and beyond. Of course, there's also a port for the phone's included stereo headset. USB and infrared data ports are provided, as well, and the phone supports USB mass storage so you can simply plug the phone into your computer and drag and drop files into the phone's memory using the included Disc2Phone PC application. To top it all off, the W810's camera flash can double as a flashlight.
Calling Features The W810's phone book can hold up to 1000 contacts with multiple entries per contact. A call list remembers your most recent missed, received and dialed calls. The phone's voice activated dialing makes calling your contacts as easy as saying their names, while the built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are included and you can also use MP3 and AAC music files as ringtones. A cool application called Music DJ even lets you mix your own ringtones. Meanwhile, picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. For those times you want to keep things discreet, there's a vibrate ringer mode. And because the W810 is Bluetooth-enabled, you can use a variety of headsets and handsfree kits for total wireless freedom when you're on the go.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools If you're looking for a mobile productivity partner, the W810 has you covered. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, and sound via MMS messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging possibilities. The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web Browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the W810, as it supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the high speed EDGE data protocol. When used with your carrier data plan and the phone's Bluetooth or USB data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the W810, including a voice memo recorder, a to-do list, a calculator, a calendar and an alarm clock. The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard, which lets you synchronize your PC-based calendar, contacts, notes and tasks with your W810.
Imaging and Entertainment The W810 is a Walkman phone, and that means it offers a great mobile music experience. Load up your favorite songs in MP3 or AAC format on a memory card and listen to your heart's content. The user-friendly music player application also includes a "Music Mode" that shuts down the phone functions so you can listen on an airplane or anytime you don't want to accept calls. Meanwhile, Digital Mega Bass and stereo widening combine to enhance your listening experience. There's even an FM radio for catching the big game or your favorite stations. The radio also supports reception of digital song information from radio stations.
And don't forget about that powerful 2-megapixel camera, which features something most camera phones lack -- autofocus. Finally, you can get consistently great shots from any distance, shots that rival the quality of a dedicated digital camera. The camera also features an LED flash and a 4x digital zoom, and it can capture video, as well. Dedicated controls on the side of the unit will make you forget you're holding a phone in your hand.
And what about gaming? This phone is definitely geared for the mobile fun fanatic, as it supports widescreen and 3D games. The W810 comes preloaded with several games and more are downloadable from Sony Ericsson.
Vital Statistics The Sony Ericsson W810 weighs 3.49 ounces and measures 3.94 x 1.81 x .77 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 8 hours of digital talk time, and up to 350 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Sony CDX-GT630UI MP3/WMA/AAC Compliant CD Receiver with iPod Direct Control via USB Review

Sony CDX-GT630UI MP3/WMA/AAC Compliant CD Receiver with iPod Direct Control via USB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this radio and installed it myself about a week ago. I love it. It looks great and it is so simple and easy to use!
I have no idea why people are saying the interface is bad and it takes a ton of clicks to get anywhere. Maybe they are taking the long way? It takes me no more than 5-10 seconds to make any adjustments. I also find the volume very easy to control. You don't accidentally enter any menus by adjusting the volume. You would definitely have to try to get into the menus.
The flip down to access the CD drive is great - it keeps it clean and lasts longer. The colors are great and the removable faceplate keeps the radio from being stolen.
The sound clarity is amazing as well. The USB port is great. I just plug in my iPod with the cable that came with it (same one you use to hook it up to your computer). It charges it and I can control the songs right from my radio! No sense in paying for the auxiliary cable PLUS cable to charge it because you can do it all through the USB that came with the iPod.
I'm beyond happy with my choice! I would highly recommend this radio and would definitely buy it again.

Sony NVU83T 4.8'' Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Nylon Carrying Case Review

Sony NVU83T 4.8'' Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Nylon Carrying Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The NVU83T is a feature-rich, reasonably user-friendly GPS device that meets most of my requirements at least half-way. In addition, it offers many features that I will probably never need but it's good to know they exist. Its navigation capabilities are generally comparable with some of the more popular brands and many of its features are only found in the other vendors' higher-end offerings such us support for gesture commands. Traffic information is available via subscription with the first 3 months free.
Besides being a GPS, it can easily pair with Bluetooth-enabled phones as an audio device. A Memory Stick Duo can be inserted to allow for backups of stored information such as address books, phone book and saved routes.
The provided suction-cup mount proved to be very effective. It's been on the windshield for a couple of months already and... it's still there.
A near-complete 31 page manual is available on the disk as a .PDF. The disk also installs the 'nav-u tool' application on a PC to allow for firmware upgrades and other downloads via a USB cable.
As a GPS
--------
I did read the other reviews before deciding to buy this unit. I decided to go with Sony and not Garmin or Tom-Tom or Nuvi because I already own a Garmin and, while quite reliable, it's not perfect and on most of my local trips where I am familiar with the local roads it does not always take me to my destination on the optimal path. The reviews state that Sony's device too does not always recommend the best path. I can testify that this is, indeed the case. On a head-to-head comparison, Sony was as bad as Garmin on all but one turn - it actually knew about a shortcut Garmin didn't. On the other hand, Garmin knew of a shortcut that Sony didn't. So, it's almost parity.
I am happy with Sony's 4.8", wide display. The touch screen resolution is good enough to allow for a lot of detail to be displayed.
Besides the map, the normal display during navigation would show:
- current direction and speed
- current position and GPS status indication
- a compass showing the straight-line direction for the destination
- current time
- current street name
- ETA and distance to destination
- distance to next turn
- next street name
- next turn instruction
- current position
When approaching a turn you can see:
- a maginfied view of the intersection on the left half of the screen
- a bar indication of the distance to the next turn
While on highway, a display would show on which lane to stay whenever the road splits or merges. The GPS can be set to show exits on the map and to warn of upcoming merges from right or left.
This may seem to be very 'busy' but it does not look that way at all while driving.
The device can be set to display a variety of points of interest on the map, from specific types of restaurants to gas stations to actual towns. The display can also be set to adjust colors on day/night with 7 color schemes available. The map can be either 2-D or 3 different types of 3-D, set a various levels of magnification ranging from a few hundred feet to about 50 miles and so on and so forth.
Gesture commands can increase/decrease the level of magnification by simply drawing a circle clockwise or counter-clockwise on the screen.
Text to speech makes a best effort attempt to pronounce street names. For English you can pick between a female (default) or a male voice. When traffic info is used, the GPS can be set to automatically recalculate the route to avoid high-volume traffic, accidents or hazardous driving conditions.
The guidance can be set to either 'normal', 'avoid toll roads' or 'avoid toll roads (shortest)'. I can't say that I saw a big difference between the three on local trips, within 50-100 miles from my residence. Sometimes, simply making a left turn rather than a right turn can shorten a trip by many miles, which makes me believe that the stored map does not have very good information on which roads can be engaged through a left turn vs. divided highways. While I do see this something that needs to be addressed by future firmware or map upgrades, I do not consider it as a big disqualifier. I am relying on my GPS to help me find my way back when I get lost, to take me to unfamiliar places and to help me plan long trips and to find my way while away from home and this device seems to be capable of doing all of the above even though not always in the most optimal fashion.
Interestingly, the manual claims that, while driving through a tunnel or through an area of poor satellite reception, the device can sense motion and continue to display your approximate position. I am not sure if this is a unique feature and I was not able to test it myself, absent tunnels in my immediate vicinity.
Many other features and settings are available but I will have to limit the size of this review. I will try to answer any questions that I can answer to anyone who leaves as comment, as soon as I see it. As a sound device for a phone
-----------------------------
When paired with a phone, the NVU83T can be used a speaker for the paired phone(s), to answer incoming calls by simply touching the screen or to initiate calls, including 'calling home' by simply drawing a 'v' on the screen.
It can be paired with several phones, it can import phone books directly from the phones, stores the last 40 numbers dialed or incoming and there allows for setting the volume and the level of noise/echo cancelling. Rating
------
I will rate the NVU83T as a 4-star. The sheer volume of features and capabilities and the level of customization - to which the review above is only a hint - go a long way toward making up for the sometimes imperfect guidance. I want to make it clear: never did the NVU83T send me to the wrong place or asked me to do anything dangerous - like making a U-turn on a highway. Its directions are not always the best but neither seem to be those from competing products so, relatively speaking, the NVU83T holds its own and it offers some features not always found in other models.

Sony NVU83T 4.8-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Sony NVU83T 4.8-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the big concerns with this product was the fact that most users had mentioned that the routing and the software was buggy. I decided to purchase the NV-U83t anyways expecting a firmware upgrade. Prior to the upgrade (version 1.0) I ran into several issues where the routing was quite terrible, and I found that when searching for GPS signal the unit would not inform you that it was "searching". On April 7, Sony came out with a firmware update version 2.0. I tried this out and it really fixed several issues especially the routing issue and GUI(graphical user interface) slowness. I initially had this rated as a 2/5, but now rate it as a 5/5. I couldn't be happier with the GPS product from Sony. I'd like to express that I have experience with other GPS products such as the Garmin Nuvi 260, Magellan Roadmate 1200, the Sony NV-U83t is the best featured GPS unit. In my opinion, I would definitely recommend this GPS unit.
Users, if you have Version 1.0. UPGRADE to 2.0!!!
Update 7/14/2008:
I updated to Version 3.0, I do agree that the POI was slow, I took a long trip with V2.0 and finding POI was really really bad where it would take minutes to find a location. with Version 3.0, it's a difference between NIGHT and DAY. Upgrade to Version 3.0, not only is the poi searching better, the overall user experience is BETTER. I'm happy Sony is providing firmware updates, this is important since the product itself was released too early. I do believe there will be a few more software revisions, but using the update tool is VERY VERY easy. Good luck with those that do decide to purchase the NV-u83t, it's an awesome unit and I am definitely happy with it.

The Sony Nav-U portable satellite navigation system is more than basic navigation Behind it's elegant design you'll find, intuitive and easy to use functionality along with pre-loaded map content covering the continental US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. While the Super Suction Cup affords installation flexibility in an endless variety of situations, easy to read 4.3" and 4.8" Touch Screen displays will allow you to keep your eyes on the road and not the screen. TTS (Text to Speech) also eliminates second-guessing when making a turn; the device utilizes spoken commands ensuring you are able to follow the directions by street names. The Sony Nav-U portable satellite navigation system, is the perfect companion for that cross-country trip or short ride across town.

Sony VGPWKB5 Vaio Wireless Keyboard Review

Sony VGPWKB5 Vaio Wireless Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This keyboard is certainly just a luxury item for your computer. Sure there are definitely more practical keyboards out there, sure as heck they are much cheaper, but like the previous reviewer mentioned why not indulge yourself periodically?? The keboard has a very solid feel to it, it not noisy when you type. Its very much like a laptop in construction and design, a Sony Vaio laptop more specifically, it looks nearly identical to my Vaio SZ laptop series keyboard. Sleek and modern, it will definitely get a wow from your friends! What's great is that it immediately worked with XP...no hard to understand instructions, no difficult software, plug in, press two buttons and BAM! your instantly connected. Works like a dream. One slight con is that I cannot get the S1,S2,S3 shortcut buttons to work, it says its for default email, web and calculator. Sadly it doesn't work for neither, BUT that's one thing I can live with, so it's not perfect (it may just be my machine, and don't let this keep your from buying this great gizmo).
I totally recommend this if you have a matching Vaio, because it looks wonderful, and compliments my Sony VGPBMS33/B Bluetooth® Laser Mouse!
5 STARS!!

Sony MDR-DS6000 Wireless Surround Digital 2.4GHz RF Review

Sony MDR-DS6000 Wireless Surround Digital 2.4GHz RF
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I want to love these. They sound great, are comfortable, and have fantastic range. But they absolutely kill other 2.4GHz wireless devices. In my house, they kill the signal from two wireless routers (D-Link 802.11g) and interfere with my wireless phones. I've never experienced anything like this. When the processor is off, all my wireless devices work great with the client report excellent signals. Processor on, and the various wireless clients around my house report no signal from the hosts. I'm going to have to return these and by the Pioneer SE-DIR800C.

Pyle P1002AI 1000 Watts Hybrid Receiver and Pre-Amplifier with AM-FM Tuner/iPod Docking Station Review

Pyle P1002AI 1000 Watts Hybrid Receiver and Pre-Amplifier with AM-FM Tuner/iPod Docking Station
Average Reviews:

Just received this on Friday and hooked it up to our new Bose environmental outdoor speakers 251 putting out 200 watts per channel. Hooked up Itouch ipod to it, was working great at first, but then unit started going haywire until it ultimately FROZE and none of the operations worked properly. Called their support office today and was informed that this unit is NOT compatible with Itouch ipod models and it will short out the unit if you try to dock it in the included dock on the top. The dock on the top is made for older generation ipod models. However, you can purchase a universal ipod doc that hooks up to the back of the unit via RCA outputs if you want to use this unit with Itouch ipod. Doing this will charge the Itouch, but then in order to hear your songs you may also have to hook up the Itouch via the Ipod/Mp3 jack on the front of the unit. Once this is hooked up properly, the sounds is AMAZING for the Bose speakers that we have! It's reallly incredible and sounds like an outdoor concert. I only gave it three stars because the manual has no directions in it and no way of knowing that if you try to connect Itouch into the ipod dock that it will short out the unit. Had we known that from the beginning in the item description or the manual it would have saved us a lot of headaches trying to figure out what the problem was! Also, another FYI, the technical support agent suggested purchasing their lower end model P1001AT that DOES NOT have the ipod dock at the top if you are going to strictly use an ITOUCH ipod with it. Again, you would just have to purchase a separate universal ipod doc.

Yamaha RX-V467BL 5.1 Channel 525 Watt AV Receiver (Each, Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V467BL 5.1 Channel 525 Watt AV Receiver (Each, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this receiver based on other reviews of Yamaha receivers. I chose this over Samsung's current 5.1 and 7.1 receiver, because the Samsung units had lackluster reviews. I was curious about the Samsung receiver line because our television is a Samsung LED.
I'm thrilled with the RX-V467. First, the quality is topnotch, which is something you can always expect from Yamaha gear. It's solidly built and feels that way. There's a huge heatsink inside, visible through the top vent. Second, it's feature-rich and surprisingly easy to operate given all the options at hand.
I bought Polk Audio's SurroundBar and Polk Audio's PSW10 Subwoofer for this unit: What fantastic sound when you merge these items! For Blu-ray--also based on user ratings--I purchased the Sony BDP-360, and it works great with the Yamaha RX-V467 via HDMI-CEC.
My Samsung UN55C6500 LED LCD television works great with this receiver. I'm even able to get some HDMI-CEC functionality between the receiver, TV, and Sony Blu-ray.
The remote control looks scary at first, but once I stared into it for a few seconds, I realized the forethought that went into it. I was able to set most functions in the receiver without cracking the manual. If you've used a receiver before, you'll likely find this unit and remote easy to operate. The remote can be programmed to operate other components in your HES.
The auto calibration microphone starts the process when you plug it in. A few remote clicks and you're done. Had to set the speaker size back to Large for the SurroundBar, however, as this is what Polk Audio recommends.
I love that you can name the inputs of the unit based on what you plug in; this makes it easy to see what AV input you've selected.
I've only scratched the surface. This unit has plenty of features to keep you busy if you like that kind of stuff.
This receiver is $329 on Amazon and other places; great deal!!!!
Downsides:
My Pace HD cable box (Time Warner) did not work well via HDMI cable, but I'm not sure if this was the fault of the Pace, the receiver, or the television (or some combination). Sound and picture would blink or stutter on-and-off for about 30 seconds with each channel change (changed via the cable box). That was just unacceptable, so I went to Component and TOSLINK cables for the Pace without issue. HD cable sounds and looks great now, without "blinking," using these cable selections connected to the receiver. This unfortunately means I have both Component and HDMI cables connected to the TV.
Does not include an iPhone or iPod dock like the Samsung. The new iPhone/iPod dock should be available within the next month or so, but you'll have to buy that as an option. Starting retail price to be $99. The receiver does have a mini-plug on the front to connect your mp3 device right away, however. There is currently an iPod-only dock available for the unit ($40-$70 online); I understand it has some iPhone compatibility, but I'm waiting for the new dock.
This unit offers ZERO conversion options. In other words, it will not up-convert or down-convert one format to another (e.g., Composite to Component, Component to HDMI, etc.). Most of the reviews I've read on units from other manufacturers that do offer conversion options have been poor, which leads me to believe that it's the conversion process itself that sucks--not the receivers. No idea if the unit will do the conversion for the iPhone dock...hope it does.
Conclusion:
I recommend this receiver. As with all things, better units are available for MORE money; this unit delivers for the amount paid. If you're like me (moderate audio junkie) and need a unit for a medium-sized room (5.1 surround), I think you'll like this receiver. If you fancy yourself an audiophile and like to buy expensive audio and video cables because you think it helps, buy something more expensive.

Sony DRBT100CX/BLU Ear Bud Style Stereo Bluetooth Headset Review

Sony DRBT100CX/BLU Ear Bud Style Stereo Bluetooth Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had reservations about this product when I purchased it on-line, but I had been searching for a wireless or semi wireless stereo headset that fits my modest but specific requirements, so I tried it out, and I really like it.
Unlike other Bluetooth stereo headset devices I have tried, this little unit has great range. Others I've tried had a difficult time streaming audio at the distance from my head to my hand with my arm extended at 90 degrees, which is of little use to me. With the DRBT100CX, I can place my mobile device in my pocket or even walk away from it an easy 30 meters with excellent streaming clarity.
The ear buds fit comfortably and I can manually adjust the amount of ambient noise I want to hear by adjusting how snugly I put them in my ears. This is important because there are times you need to be aware of the sounds around you, and there are times you just want to drown everything out. And because the ear buds are corded, the Bluetooth transmitter doesn't have to be pressed against the back of my skull or hanging behind my ear; I can clip it to my shirt sleeve or waist band. While the precise health risks of Bluetooth transmissions are somewhat unknown, I'd just as soon limit the proximity to my head.
It's extremely light weight with a compact form factor, and the simplicity of the miniature joystick control is brilliant, even for my huge hands and fingers. So far, it appears to be quite efficient with power usage, and I love that it recharges via USB, with the USB charge cable included.
There is one item that I would consider to be a significant design flaw that Sony should fix if they design another (even smaller) version, and I hope that they do. The built-in, plastic spring loaded clip used to clip it onto your cloths, etc., is far too flimsy for even casual use. On my unit, the clip broke off at the hinge and it's just too tiny and delicate to attempt any type of lasting repair. I happened to have a small Velcro strap with a metal clip on it, the kind you might see threaded through the hole of an identification badge clipped to one's jacket lapel, which works perfectly for me, actually better than the original.
The price seems a bit high, but because this unit fits my needs, I use it all the time, so I'm comfortable that it was a good purchase. I have to deduct from the rating, not just because my clip broke, but because Sony should have given more realistic consideration to the design, for that price.

I ordered this unit on Thursday Nov. 11th with two day shipping and got it the next day. Pretty impressed with that. Installing this unit was a breeze and it fit perfectly in my 97 Ram. For the price, great unit. I was impressed with the quality of the build... especially the RCA outputs having rubber coated jackets with attached rubber caps when not in use. Bluetooth works great and LCD screen is sharp and bright. USB only supports up to 249 tracks of audio and SD slot only supports 512kb. The only down side is that I didn't recieve the remote control with the unit, which has limited me on some features that can only be accessed by remote. SSL customer service is somewhat frustrating as I can never get anyone to call me back about getting the remote sent, but I'll keep trying. But overall I'm very pleased with the player. Does everything I want for a great price. Since I couldn't find any reviews on this product before I purchased it, I hope this helps someone along the way.

This was my first smartphone. The apps of the android system are great, but if you download many of them your system is likely to crash a lot. The touchscreen may be cool at first, but sometimes simple tasks such as dialing or saving a number may become annoying, especially if the system gets slower and slower due to apps. The battery life is not too good. I have to recharge the phone daily even if I didn't make a long phone call. I am satisfied with the camera, which produces very good photos in my opinion. What makes this phone great is its size, look and the camera. Although the size makes this phone pretty handy, the touchscreen and the system may not be very convenient especially for basic usage such as phone calls and sms. All in all, I still like it but I think I should have bought the version with integrated keypad.
