Jabra C820S Active Noise Cancelling Stereo Headphones Review

Jabra C820S Active Noise Cancelling Stereo Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've looked and tried nearly a dozen so-called active noise cancelling headphones and was tremendously disappointed by all of them, except the Bose, which I cannot afford. Then I saw the Jabra and since they make the best Bluetooth headsets, I figured, let's try it...I can always return it.
Somewhat to my surprise, the quality was outstanding: the noice cancelling does exactly that and there are no irritating hissing sounds etc. The audio quality is absolutely great and the set comes in a beautiful case.
I have now used it for about 40+ hours, most of which in airplanes and am still on my first battery (it's rated for 50 hours).
Last week I swapped with a Bose QC2 that the guy in the seat next to me was wearing and we did a little testing. Our conclusion was that the Jabra was slightly better in noise cancelling (but Bose was very good too), that both were equal in sound quality and that the Bose was slightly better in comfort (but the Jabra was very comfortable too).
So for $150 less I'll take the Jabra.

Bose QuietComfort 2 Acoustic Noise Canceling Headphones Review

Bose QuietComfort 2 Acoustic Noise Canceling Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned a pai of the Quietcomfort headphones for more than a year now. They are absolutely great on intercontinental flights.
Pros:
- The sound is fabulous, bass reproduction is great.
- Needs one AAA battery, but it goes for between 24 - 30 hrs of use so this is great.
- Noise cancellation works great, great cushioning.
Cons:
- Pricey
- bulky to transport, cant be substituted for "workout" phones.
- Too much insulation on the earpiece. My ears start to sweat if i wear constantly for more than a couple of hrs.
- Not great to sleep in (on flights) as you tend to block the noise cancellation ports.

Sennheiser PXC 310 Compact Noise-Canceling Travel Headphones (Black) Review

Sennheiser PXC 310 Compact Noise-Canceling Travel Headphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I also have the px-100,pxc-250,pxc-300. The PXC-310 is nicely built. They are bigger than the other pxc models and sit on the ear. Because of this you get better noise cancellation than the other models. They also come in a case that is just a tiny bit bigger than the case of the pxc-250 and 300. On the plus side, the noise cancellation is built into the earphones rather than an external piece as in the 250 and 300. It also has a volume control built into the earphones. The sound is good with good bass and highs. That being said, when you turn the noise cancellation on, you lose some bass. This was also the case with the pxc-300 but not the 250. However, the 310 still puts out more bass than any of the previous models. The talk through function is handy when someone is speaking to you. All you have to do is press the button on the earphone and it shuts off the music so you can hear via a built in microphone. However, it sounds as though you are under water. It has a very hollow sound, but it is a nice feature. Once again, these earphones, like its predecessors do not play as loud as other headphones but is more than sufficient. Another nice feature is that the earphones still work without the noise cancellation turned on. To be honest, the earphones sound better with the noise cancellation turned off. If you are in a quiet environment, this would be the way to go. All in all they are comfortable, good sounding and nicely built. By the way, i had and returned the Bose QC3. To my ears the 310 are much better sounding.

Beats Solo Hi-Def (PRODUCT)RED Headphones with ControlTalk Review

Beats Solo Hi-Def (PRODUCT)RED Headphones with ControlTalk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Last year, I tried out a pair of Beats Studio noise-cancelling headphones at an Apple Store and, upon listening to the music selection, decided that it was the best sounding headphones I had ever listened to. I was impressed enough that I was tempted to purchase them on the spot...but I had some hesitations which led me to walk out empty-handed. The caveats then were:
-Battery required for operation (due to the noise-cancelling function, which I didn't need)
-Large size
-The plastic material felt cheap and likely to crack easily
-and of course, the price (about three-hundred fifty USD at the time)
The sound of the Beats Studio had "haunted" me since, as I searched in vain for a cheaper and better quality pair of headphones which matched or beat that sound. I tried pairs from Grado, Ultimate Ears, Sennheiser, Bose, but never felt satisfied with the sound quality as I had with the Beats Studio. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I learned that these headphones, the Beats Solo, were coming out. I saw that the price was below two-hundred USD and ordered them immediately. My hope was that the sound quality would be just as good as the more expensive Beats Studio.
These headphones have met all my expectations. The sound is truly amazing and I can clearly hear so much detail in my music. The headphones do a swell job of projecting the background detail enough, but not too much that it drowns out the rest of the music. Also, the bass is slightly amplified so you hear some slight "thump thump" but is definitely not overpowering like "THUMP! THUMP!"
As for the caveats that I had with the more expensive Beats Studio, they are all addressed to my satisfaction with the Beats Solo:
+These headphones are not noise-cancelling, and as a result do not use a battery. They are simply plug-in headphones without an on/off switch.
+The Beats Solo is more compact than and not as bulky as the Studio phones. They also fold and can be stored in the included neoprene carrying pouch.
+The quality of the plastic in these phones is much superior. These phones feel solid and worth the price.
+The price is still high, but I believe it's more reasonable.
There are some other differences that are noteworthy about the Beats Solo over the Beats Studio:
+The Solo headphones are worn so that they rest on TOP of your ear, and not surrounding them. If you are familiar with Bose's line of headphones, then the Beats Solo would compare to the Bose On-Ear headphones. The Studio phones, however, fit around the ear and would compare to the Bose QC2/Quiet Comfort 15 phones.
+The cheaper Solo headphones have a 3-year warranty vs. 1-year warranty for the more expensive Studio headphones. (Interesting...)
+While both headphones include a cable with a mic that can be used with an iPhone or similar phones, the Solo headphone cord also has a remote control that can control the volume and other functions. However, this feature isn't perfect. The button that controls playback functions is too small that I typically would hit the volume button at the same time. Also, I tried using the phones while making calls with my iPhone 3GS, and the people on the other end complained that they heard a substantial amount of background noise.
In conclusion, I believe the Beats Solo headphones have excellent sound, quality construction and sleek design which make them worthy of their price. They are, in my mind, a better buy than the more expensive Beats Studio headphones. Only if you are a frequent flyer who would benefit from noise-cancelling should you consider buying the Studio headphones. Otherwise, the Solo headphones are the ones to get.

EDIT (February 25, 2010) - Apparently Monster has decided to shorten the warranty on the Beats Solo to 1 year only. I went into the Apple Store today where I had purchased my set and saw that of the stock they have, a few of the units had "Three Year Limited Warranty" written on the box (lower part of the left spine) while the rest had "One Year Limited Warranty" instead. I spoke with one of the Apple Store guys who confirmed that the 1-year warranty units were their newer stock. I wouldn't consider this a reason to take off any stars since I still think these are great headphones; I guess Monster chose to match Bose and Sony in regards to the warranty length, which is indeed a shame.
Thanks to Suzie Mcleod for first discovering this change.--------------------------
EDIT (December 16, 2010) - Thought I'd add a little update that after owning these headphones for more than 1 year, they're still working great for me! I noticed many of the negative reviews about the head band breaking; mine has not broken fortunately, but I've been very gentle with my headphones and have been careful to not overstretch the band when putting them on. I'd say if you're careful and patient enough to take a few extra seconds when putting on these phones, you shouldn't have to worry about the head band breaking. As for the sound quality, I still think it's terrific. I recently did an accidental comparison of these phones to my pair of Ultimate Ears 700 earbuds (which I've also given a positive review of here on Amazon). Basically I had taken off the Beats and put on the Ultimate Ears buds immediately as I was heading out of the house. I had never done that before. The difference in sound quality was very noticeable, like night and day. The Beats headphones trumped the Ultimate Ears. With the Beats, I felt like I was in a concert hall listening to the music, and the details were noticeable. With the earbuds, I felt like I was listening to the music through a tin can. The sound quality felt cheap and awful, and the detail was not as impressive. Granted, this could be a common comparison between a pair of full-size headphones like the Beats and a pair of in-ear buds. Nevertheless, I thought I'd throw it out here just to give my perspective. I still highly recommend these phones.
--------------------------
EDIT (May 28, 2011) - Well, so my headphones DID break! I was taking them off normally and in a gentle manner when I heard a snap, and knew instantly what happened. While it was frustrating to have the headphones break, exchanging them under warranty was literally painless. I called Monster's warranty line and got someone in the U.S. with barely any wait time. The lady took down my particulars and gave me an RMA number and address to ship the broken pair of headphones. She also emailed it as well, which was really handy. I did have to pay out-of-pocket to ship the broken pair of headphones (under $10), which was fine to me although I know some people will complain about that. She told me that it would take them 3-4 weeks to process my exchange, but literally a week after I shipped off the busted pair I was surprised to get a package from Monster. They sent me a brand-new pair of the same model complete in sealed retail packaging with all accessories. The replacement pair I got was identical to my previous pair in both looks and feel of the material and construction. I couldn't help but notice that on the new package is a sticker saying "Featuring Superior Strength Headband". I did not, and do not intend to, test this claim :D
Overall, I too got the "broken headphone syndrome". However, Monster's customer service and fast warranty service was very good and practically hassle-free, and I got a new pair in less than 2 weeks. I was glad to see Monster stand behind their product like that, and hence I do not see any reason to take any stars off my original 5-star rating. Hopefully my new pair will last longer.

Nokia BH-905i Bluetooth Headset (Black) Review

Nokia BH-905i Bluetooth Headset (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok... so I must be getting old, have allot of free time or these headphones are awesome enough to make me sit here and actually write a review. I am only 30, rarely have free time so its neither of those. BOTTOM LINE, these headphones are awesome. I was so nervous when purchasing these...is the audio quality gonna meet my expectations??? Will callers be able to clearly hear me? How rugged are they as I am hard on stuff??? Should I go with Sennheiser as they seem to be the leader in headphone technology????
The final verdict: I made the right choice and I will tell you that if you buy these you will be happy and honestly, the $300 price tag is appropriate in my estimation. The sound quality is awesome! I listen to allot of different music. Hip hop ( I want my bass ) R&B ( I really need my bass and mids) rock ( I need need my bass and highs). These headphones do it all. The call quality is very impressive also. I couldnt wait to call 2-3 people and see what they said and if they knew I was calling on a bluetooth headset. If anyone of them complained I was mailing these things back quicker than you could snap your fingers. For $300, these had to be perfect and I would have moved on to the Sennheisers. I would have hated to do this as the sound, distance to bluetooth device and build were solid. First call to my wife...success, "Wow, you sound really good." Second call to my brother who would have loved to burst my bubble cause I am so picky said "Wow, did you get a new phone, you sound really clear." My response, "Nope, not a new phone, but a $300 pair of headphones which I am using to talk to you right now." He couldnt believe I was on a headset, nevertheless one without a boom mic in front of face. I am truly amazed by that fact as well.
Dont be afraid to invest in these for yourself or someone else. I researched headphones for weeks. Everything from wired Bose QC15, sennheiser, sony, beats by dre, etc. I will NEVER use a wired headphone with the quality I get from this bluetooth headset. I was actually kinda mad at BOSE for charging $300 for something that is very comparable in sound, has the same noise canceling feature, was wired and required an additional $40 purchase of a new wire to be able to control the phone. What a rip off and I am a big Bose fan so it kinda hurts to say that. Their sound is slightly better...NO DOUBT. But let me tell you, DO NOT spend $300 for a wired headset. I use a droid motorola, sony viaio laptop and Ps3 with these. AWESOME. I can use these to play Call of Duty, or connect to my laptop and watch a movie or use them on the train and plane with my droid to make calls and listen to music. Geesh, I really cant say enough and honestly..I think this is only the 2nd review I ever wrote in my life. I just remember my concerns with these after I placed the order and wanted to put others at ease. Worst case, amazon has a good return policy and you get your money back. Oh yeah, i work in a big corporate office and I was walking around yesterday with these on and 2 co-workers made comments. "Sweet headphones jay, those look sharp." A plus for those that will use these in public. I listen to my music everywhere now. Grocery store, shoveling snow (yes they are durable), etc. I wont wear them to the gym...NO WAY. I will use the old wired $15 sonys to sweat in. Also, just an fyi. I didnt move from $15 headhpones to these. I had $150 sonys that crapped out after 2 years. They were a goo0d wired product and the sound and NCF was awesome, but these things are ridiculously cool. I have to list one or 2 nuetral facts about this item but none are negative.
1.) These things are very nice looking and comfortable. People are going to want to steal them.
2.) Active noise canceling means if there is a consistent noise, ie. fan, jet engine, lots of people talking in a crowded place, it will block it out and do a very good job at it. If Joe Smoe wants to come up to you and chat, this will not be blocked. If you are watching Dr. Phil, you will hear all of his garbage advice unless you turn the volume up on the headphones. THis is good for me so I dont have to really do anything if I am with a friend and they wanna chat. Maybe turn down the volume, but thats about it. The ANC will not mute them. Ok, I am done and I hope folks find this helpful.

Lightspeed SIERRA ANR Aviation Headset Review

Lightspeed SIERRA ANR Aviation Headset

ANR works great. Sound is crystal clear and mic pics up speech without having it positioned too close to lips. The blue tooth feature for cell is nice, but I'm finding that I have to pair it with my iPhone 4 each time...shouldn't it be automatic? Haven't tried the mp3 music adapter yet. Heading up to Santa Ynez this weekend.... maybe I'll give it a go.

Lightspeed ZULU Premium ANR Aviation Headset (Battery Power, Straight cord, Standard Dual GA Plugs) Review

Lightspeed ZULU Premium ANR Aviation Headset (Battery Power, Straight cord, Standard Dual GA Plugs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I owned a Bose X headset for about half a year. When I began flying regularly with other people, I picked up a Lightspeed Zulu headset. I found that the only advantage the Bose has over the Lightspeed is that the clamping force is MARGINALLY lower with the Bose. This has not created a problem for me or my passengers, at all.
I have now sold my Bose X, and picked up another Lightspeed for my passengers to use. It is by far the superior headset, for MANY reasons. Let's review!
- NOISE ATTENUATION: Bose X is just not as good as Lightspeed Zulu at this. If you are flying behind a high-revving engine such as a Rotax 912ULS, you will find that the Zulu is just as good at 5500 as it is at 2000 - which is to say, quite good, and better than Bose. This is quite a big deal by itself, and more than enough to get my attention and my future business, but Lightspeed didn't stop there.
- MUSIC: For $850 (formerly $1000), you would assume that Bose could afford to spend ten bucks (or less) integrating a simple 1/8" jack into the control box so that you could pipe in some music. For some strange reason, Bose elected not to do this. Not only has Lightspeed given you a 1/8" jack for music, but they have also put a really nice DSP into the control box that lets you turn a sort of surround sound mode called Front Row Center on and off. It also has a mode where it will cut out the music if someone calls you up on the radio, although I have not been able to get that to work particularly well, so I leave that feature turned off. The sound quality is very good for an aviation headset. If your airplane is already wired for music, or you don't mind wearing earbuds (which I tried with the Bose and found painful, as the Bose pressed them into my ear canal), this may not be a big deal to you. If you are a student pilot and have enough to worry about without music, this may not be a big deal to you RIGHT NOW, but once you've got a hundred or two hundred hours and you have enough free attention to enjoy some tunes, it WILL matter to you. The 1/8" jack supports normal stereo input as well as two-way cell phone plugs.
- BLUETOOTH: You may not care about this, but isn't it telling that Lightspeed - for $850, at a time when Bose X still cost fully $1,000 - was able to integrate a Bluetooth transciever? This is useful for picking up an IFR clearance on the ground, closing a flight plan, letting your SO know you're taking off or on the ground without having to shut down the airplane first, etc.
- SERVICE: You'll be paying well north of a hundred dollars to get your Bose X fixed out-of-warranty. Lightspeed routinely goodwills repairs outside of the warranty period. I have sent two different headsets (an OEM verison of their XC, as well as my older Zulus) in for service. The XCs were YEARS out of warranty, and I had lost my receipt for the Zulus. Both were repaired, FREE OF CHARGE, and shipped back to me. The only thing I had to pay for on either of these was the shipping costs to get the headsets to them - Lightspeed covered the shipping back to me. Now, which is better - paying $150 + shipping, or paying $0 + shipping? I'll let you do the math on that one.
Bose just does not have it together on the X. It doesn't do as good a job at attenuating noise as the Lightspeed Zulu. It doesn't have an audio in port, which is ridiculous on a headset of this price range. It doesn't have Bluetooth, which you may or may not care about, but which is nice to have. And - the final nail in the coffin - the service is nowhere as good.
Lightspeed, you have done a fantastic job on this headset, and because of it, you have earned a repeat customer. Keep up the good work!
