Logitech Refurbished MX Revolution Laser Mouse (Black) Review

Logitech Refurbished MX Revolution Laser Mouse (Black)

the Refurbished Model does not have the advertised 3 year warranty, it is only 90 days despite what Amazon claims. It broke early, they patched it up and are trying to pass this lemon onto someone else with a short waranty. I picked up one for under thirty and it stopped working right in less than 4 months, right after the waranty ran out. If the extended waranties can be added (and I'm not sure they can on refurbished) it might be worth it, since it was a pretty nice mouse while it worked.

Kensington SlimBlade Presenter Media Mouse with Mouse, Presenter and Media Controller in One (Pewter) K72280US Review

Kensington SlimBlade Presenter Media Mouse with Mouse, Presenter and Media Controller in One (Pewter) K72280US

The Kensington Slimblade Presenter Media Mouse is two useful tools in one svelte package. It's a comfortable and capable Bluetooth laser mouse; but flip it over and find an ipod-like control pad for giving Keynote or Powerpoint presentations. The remote is also compatible with iTunes and FrontRow.
Now to the details. To use the SlimBlade, simply remove the USB transeiver from the battery compartment, plug it in and you're ready to go. There are Mac drivers to install before the first use. It seemed to work fine with the current version of Leopard.
I really have to compliment Kensington on the comfortable, sleek lines. The SlimBlade is easy to pack and comfortable for hours of use. The mouse-side of the unit features a two-button design with a 360-degree trackball, similar to that on an Apple Mighty-mouse. Unlike the Apple mouse, this ball is not rubberized, but also didn't seem to 'clog' the way my Mighty-mouse does. The mouse tracking is accurate with no noticeable latency. One warning : The SlimBlade USB bit MUST NOT BE PLUGGED IN BEFORE LOGGING INTO YOUR MAC USER ACCOUNT OR YOUR MAC WILL KERNAL PANIC. This seemed to be a consistent pattern. Log into your account FIRST, then plug-in the Kensington USB attachment. The batteries (two AAA's) are supposed to last six months and the SlimBlade has a low-battery light when it's time to swap them. Needless to say, with a 25-day review window, the batteries were still going strong with regular use.
Now for the other half of the SlimBlade. Flip the mouse over and you'll find a circular, rubberized control pad and a recessed toggle switch. Flip the switch and the 'presenter' controls are activated. The controls will advance your slideshow, and the top button on the pad activates a laser pointer built into the leading edge of the mouse. The presenter functions worked as promised. When the toggle is in 'media mode', the rubber control pad is still active, but will only work for iTunes and FrontRow and the like. One problem that I noticed is when the toggle is in media mode, the mouse buttons (now under your hand) are still active. So if I'm using the presenter side of the mouse for, say, iTunes, I find my fingers underneath the mouse constantly clicking the mouse buttons and affecting whatever is on my desktop! I can think of a couple of fixes to this in future SlimBlade releases. One would be to reverse the location of the media control wheel and battery compartment. So the media wheel is underneath the non-mouse button side of the mouse. Or, just install a mercury switch to sense the orientation of the mouse and disable the mouse-side controls accordingly. This may be problematic for space shuttle astronauts trying to give a Keynote slideshow, but would work for the rest of us.
On the whole, I liked the Kensington SlimBlade and do feel it's a quality product worth eighty bucks. I give it four out of five.

Logitech MX 610 Left-Hand Laser Cordless Mouse Review

Logitech MX 610 Left-Hand Laser Cordless Mouse
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using right-handed mice for years, most of them 'ergonomic', which is to say 'carpal-tunnel-inducing for anyone left-handed'. This is the first left-handed mouse I've ever used, and it really is amazing being able to have all the nice ease-of-use functions right-handed users have had for so long, such as thumb buttons, a comfortable grip, and so forth.
The mouse itself took me a little while to get used to. I was using a Logitech G7 cordless mouse just prior, which had extremely fine-tuned response and tracking. The MX 610 doesn't possess quite that fine-level of granularity, but is still rather nice and precise; I only notice the difference when photoediting, where I'm a little less sure than I was before. However, the added comfort is a WELCOME change!
Battery life seems to be decent; I got about a month on the first set of included batteries, consisting of daily use for several hours usually. The MX610 uses 2 AA batteries rather than rechargeables. Some like disposables, some like rechargeables - I'm in the middle on the subject (I've liked and disliked both for various reasons at times), so it's for you to decide if this is a major attraction or detraction.
The MX610 lefty fits well into my (rather large) hand and both buttons are easy to use/press. The wheel is also easy to access, and extremely easy to scroll. As is the case with many current mice, it supports both vertical and horizontal scrolling, and the horizontal scrolling is easy to do (unlike on some Microsoft brands of mice).
The two thumb buttons for forward/backward web navigation are a little clunky to get to (they seem to be set up high, in my opinion) but I don't use them often.
This mouse possesses two light-up buttons as well - a blue button for incoming instant messages, and a green for incoming email. Both of them are extremely poorly-placed, almost on the top right corner of the mouse. Neither of them are particularly easy to access, either via thumb or index finger; I usually have to lift my hand off the mouse to get to them. As I mentioned, however, I have big hands, so your mileage may vary.
There's also built-in volume control up/down buttons just to the front of the mail/IM buttons. Those are slightly easier to click with my index finger when needed, but still a bit clunky.
As with most decent Logitech mice, all the extra buttons (mail, IM, volume, web navigation) can be reprogrammed to do whatever you want out of a variety of functions.
All in all, I find this mouse extremely worth the purchase if you're a left-handed user who wants a usable mouse that isn't a generic righty/lefty scroll mouse, and who wants to have some navigation buttons and extra goodies. The feel of the mouse is very comfortable, and overall it's definitely a quality mouse. Lefties finally get a break in the computer world!
