(More customer reviews)Bought 2 of these - one for my wife's iPhone 4 and the other for my Bold 9000. Both of us are heavy users and spend a lot of time on conference calls. I assumed it'd be a great way to handle the issue of shorter talk times & easier call handling with the Voyager Pro UC.
My review is based on the B230 M - which provides integration with MS products.
1. PAIRING
iPhone 4 - Super smooth pairing; was done in a less than 30 seconds. Note that the battery meter on the iPhone is a brilliant touch.
Bold 9000 - Smooth pairing - did not pair right the first time. No battery meters on the Blackberry though (didnt expect it anyway)
2. VOICE
iPhone 4 - I'm not sure if this is a phone/bluetooth related issue; but caller voice over the bluetooth with an iPhone wasnt as expected. Dont get me wrong, most people wont even know the difference (maybe I've got dog's ears.....) The audio sounds a bit (teeny weeny bit) muffled at times...and if you'd switch back over to the iphone - the audio was better.
Bold 9000 - No problems here. The audio from my BB was just as crisp in both cases - i.e. with/without bluetooth.
Note that I tested the above over a few days (even switching headsets) before I could conclude that this has to do with the phone rather than just the headset alone.
3. A2DP STREAMING
iPhone - Music playback over the headset is crystal clear for those music lovers. Especially those who use the ipod feature of their iPhones.
Bold - Didnt expect audio streaming over bluetooth in a 3 year old BB, but it worked just fine. Emails also were read out from the BB loud and clear ( I use a 3rd party app for readin out mails, but the bluetooth function worked well.)
4. BATTERY
iPhone - for heavy users, u should have this last through the day for you. I cant validate the talktime claim yet cos I think it ran short of the 6 hour estimated claim by Plantronics. Maybe it needs a few more charge cycles before you reach optimum battery life.
Bold - Same as above.
5. TOUCH-LESS CALL ANSWERING
This is the headset's killer feature. You can answer calls by just placing the headset on your ear. You can even seamlessly switch between your phone and headset by JUST TAKING THE HEADSET OFF YOUR EARS.
I wish I could confirm that killer claim - unfortunately it doesn't work all that well.
It all began in 2011 when on a bright Thursday morning, I was rushing to join a conf call.....
The issue crept up when I placed the call from my BB Bold and placed the headset on my ears - I couldnt hear anything for a few seconds. I guessed the call hadnt gone through; but my Blackberry showed the call was connected. I then pressed the call button and the headset instantly transferred the call from the device to the headset. Strange, I thought... but I let it pass.
The issue happened again later that evening when my wife called. I placed the headset on my ear to answer the call - but I heard NOTHING. I had to press the call button and as expected; the call was transferred to my headset.
I tried switching my headset with my wife's iPhone to check if this was an issue with my Blackberry and it wasnt.
I called Plantronics support and after an hour of troubleshooting an recalibrating the device - we found that it was an issue with the sensor on the headset. I was offered a replacement.
I contacted the authorized retailer and they called me back with an RMA. Now here's the best part - the exec at the distributor (the authorized Plantronics distributor) mentioned that he's heard from Plantronics that there were a few headsets coming back because of the same issue.
He then recommended that I'd rather wait for the next batch of units to be manufactured at Platronics that contained the fix for the issue rather than take a replacement headset right away.
So as it stands now - My wife continues to use her new headset without trouble; while my headset has been sent back for a refund.
Wife - Happy
Me - Not Happy. (Warning - do NOT complain to your wife if you own 2 products of the same kind - and YOURS doesnt work....)I'm rating the product overall at 3 stars - I've been a Plantronics customer for over 5 years and I know they make good products. I know they'll fix this issue and I'll be ready to purchase my headset then.
Back to my Plantronics 975 for now.
Hope this review helps someone out there.
