In short this computer is amazing. You wont find anything else under $2000 that can beat this. It comes with a standard 2 year warrant and 1 year accidental damage warranty plus a 30 day zero bright dot policy. The included mouse and bag are also great. So far I have been playing crysis and bad company 2(a great game for your new computer) on near full detail with amazing frames with the ati radean 5870(best single graphics card for laptops), 8gb of 1066mhz ram, and the new blazing fast core i7 processor. Although the computer is the size of some 18 inchers, I found that it looked and felt amazing. The whole back, palm rest area, and keys are rubberized which provides a great feel and grip. The keys are also back lit and the speakers on the computer are very loud and provide good audio The one thing I did not like about this computer was the touch pad buttons (not the touchpad its self which is great) are combined under a plastic cover which is really hard to press down on.
Pros:
Best for the price
Back lit keyboard
rubberized feels great
Best single graphics card ati 5870 with 1gb gddr5 ram
8gb of ram is more than enough
Great processor
Cool unique look
and i can just keep going on and on..
Cons:
Touch pad buttons I find hard to press down on
Number pad on keyboard feels squished
Overall 10/10
And as I said before this is the best!
Update after about 3 months
of use
I have already lost nearly all the rubber feet which do not seem attached well (medium problem). The keyboard has a lot of light bleeding through under the ` key (minor). And the worst problems i have experienced, my computer overheats! It shuts its self down randomly and i do not believe that the fan over the CPU is working (very major). I have sent it in for RMA with asus and will post an update later.
If i could change my rating I would give it 3.5-4 stars.

ASUS N61JV-X2 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) Review

ASUS N61JV-X2 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PROS:
On the initial setup, the laptop played a pretty cool Asus video that showed many "on" buttons forming various images. It made the purchase seem even more personal. Nice touch Asus. Here's a link: paste "ASUS Laptop Startup Video (2009 ASUS)(HD)" on Youtube. Watch in HD fullscreen to get the same feel. Yes simple things amaze me x_o.
My first impression of this laptop is its big size. I'm used to running a netbook, in terms of mobile pc. Examining the layout closely, the screen isn't the perpetrator here- the speaker adds roughly 2 inches to the width. Although this is easily forgiven once I heard the sound quality, which is similar to an HDTV's. This may make the laptop slightly bigger than regular 16in notebooks, but for an "entertainment"-advertised laptop, it was necessary.
I'm happy it has an eSATA port because this allowed me to couple my internal hard drives with a hard drive docking station (Thermaltake BlacX). Really helpful for storage and backups. The USB3.0 is a great addition as well. Makes it a bit more future-proof. As for the touchpad, my netbook had the same exact touchpad and I always turned it off because I was not a fan of it. Nothing beats a mouse!
Battery life depends on 4 settings through a power-managing software called Power4Gear. At "High Performance" setting, no power saving option is on and the battery life drains within 2 hours. The more balanced "Entertainment" setting, lasts 3 hours. With the power option set to "Quiet Office", the battery life lasts 4 hours. Lastly, the"Battery Saving" mode increases the battery life even longer. What it does is it disables your wallpaper, gadgets, autohides the taskbar, lowers brightness to 20% and sets every setting to maximum power savings. Of course the realtime battery life will be ultimately affected by what task you are doing.
In terms of performance, this thing packs a wallop! It will not beat a same-priced desktop, but what's important is portability. It's a great purchase for the performance. Although keep reading to learn about the current GPU driver as a caveat emptor. Another warning: I believe this was first advertised as having bluetooth. I can confirm that it does not. While this is not a deal breaker, I feel it should have been included being an entertainment laptop. Some of the pre-installed softwares are helpful, like the Power4Gear battery managing software and the Splendid Utility which enhances the screen's color/contrast/brightness settings with preset modes. The Cyberlink TrueTheater HD software is amazing. I popped in my "LotR: Fellowship of the Ring" DVD and with the smoothest playback settings (60FPS) and sharpest modes, it seemed like a whole new movie. I do not own a bluray player so I'm not used to this type of quality, but yes, it is better than any YouTube 1080p HD trailers or any HD channels I've seen.
Graphic Card Tests (Gaming):
All games were tested on the Geforce GT325m (Optimus driver version 189.07), running at 1366x768 native resolution, full screen, and with FRAPS frame counter benchmark. I wanted to keep it at native resolution to show the highest resolution capability of this GPU. Lowering resolution and some graphical settings will unquestionably increase the frame rates, but playing graphically-lush games is always a delight.
Batman Arkham Asylum: (Fight sequence VS 5 inmates at start of game)
Settings: VSync Off, Hardware PhysX Off, Detail level: Very High, 2xAnti-aliasing
Min FPS: 25, Avg FPS: 33 Max FPS : 50
Verdict: Smooth gameplay, lag-free.
--
Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare 2 : (Single Player: Heavy gun fight on "Act II: Hornet's Nest" level)
Settings: VSync On, All Graphic Settings On, All Textures set to Extra, 4xAnti-aliasing
Min FPS 30, Avg FPS 35, Max FPS 60 (Remember VSync caps this at screen's refresh rate, which is 60 in this case)
Verdict: Very playable considering it's at max in-game settings. Will experience some tiny lag spikes, which I also experienced on my desktop PC which has better specs than this laptop, so it must be the game.
--
Mass Effect 2: (Gun fights on mission to recruit Prof. Mordin)
Settings: VSync On, All graphic settings on except for Film Grain, 4xAnti-aliasing, 8xAnisotropic Filtering
Min FPS 24, Avg FPS 38, Max FPS 49
Verdict : Smooth gameplay. Some random lags but does not ruin the experience.
--
Crysis: (From game start all the way to "First Light" gun fights)
Test 1: VSync Off, Everything to Medium, No AA
Min FPS 19, Avg FPS 26, Max FPS 34
Verdict : Smooth gameplay, lag free even if the FPS results seem low. Graphic texture pop-ins on some of the vegetation, especially when using "maximum speed" boost.
Test 2: VSync Off, All graphic settings to medium, except for Texture and Shader at High. 2xAnti-Aliasing .
Min FPS 13, Avg FPS 16, Max FPS 20
Verdict : Clunky gameplay. With these settings, the texture looked sharper and much easier on the eyes, and while there are no dramatic lag spikes that will get you killed easily (it's a steady 15-16 frames on gun fights), the slow gameplay is quite noticeable.
Test 3: VSync Off, Everything to High except Shader to Medium, No AA
Min FPS 14, Avg FPS 22, Max FPS 29
Verdict : Smooth gameplay, but sometimes has that laggy feel to it. No jittering lag. Pretty impressive for the High setting- I guess Shader is what really stresses the framerates.
--
World of Warcraft: VSync off, Effects at Medium-High, Window Mode + Maximized option to properly scale the resolution
Test 1: Riding mount around Dalaran's North Bank steps with ~30 toons around me.
Min FPS 22, Avg FPS 33, Max FPS 39
Verdict: No lag
Test 2: Outside Dalaran, flying epic flight
Min 50, Avg 85, Max 150
Verdict: No lag
In instances, the gameplay is very smooth. Depending on the instance, some will be over 100FPS whereas the newer ones + raids, will be in the low 50s.

CONS:
Note: This part of the review will only be valid until Nvidia releases the proper Forceware drivers for the laptop's GPU. The GT 325m series is relatively new; NVidia has one official release for it on their website: Optimus Driver 189.07. This driver is not bad. As shown by the benchmarks, 3D gaming works well. But here's where things tend to get annoying: the Nvidia GPU, with its current drivers, rely on the Intel integrated graphics to handle screen scaling. Meaning if you connect this to a larger monitor, in my case an Acer 21.5" 1080P native res widescreen LCD, scaling works well when the GPU running is the Intel IGP, but when you switch to games, you are forced to use the 1080p resolution through the in-game settings, which will be taxing on the framerates. I know the native resolution of the laptop does not match the monitor's, but with the "normal" geforce drivers, scaling to fit the screen works well and allows the laptop's native res to stretch the image onto the monitor. My ASUS 1201n netbook does this easily through it's Nvidia Control Panel, with the same native res as this laptop. I hope NVidia releases this capability with the next driver update.
I still do not trust the current Nvidia driver for this GPU just yet. Once it is properly optimized and up to date, the fps will increase. I'll update this entry if the graphic drivers are updated through NVidia or some modding website.
NVidia Optimus: This technology sounds great but I'm having a little problem with it. See, when my laptop is plugged in, the Optimus technology works just fine: the intel switches to the nvidia GPU when loading a 3D game. But when I load a 3D game while this laptop is unplugged (regardless whether battery is full or low charge), the GPU does NOT switch. It stays on the Intel GPU and I get low framerates. This problem occurs even if I use "High Performance" mode on the power settings, even if my preferred GPU is NVidia, even if I assign the game profile to load with Nvidia GPU, even if I right click and "run with graphics processor: High performance Nvidia processor". I do notice that if I suddenly plug the laptop to the outlet, the frames will go up fast again (as if the Nvidia GPU was suddenly turned on). There needs to be a better software-based of forcing the GPU on since the NV Control Panel is faulty at this point. Isn't the whole point of Optimus to provide performance when necessary and lengthen battery life, when available? Here is NVidia's claim: "Watch a HD movie, surf the web or play top 3D games knowing that you'll get the long battery life you need and the performance you expect from NVIDIA." This technology should work even on battery, as stated there. I would like to know if this is just my laptop doing this- comment if you can help.
Update 1: there is a fix that works. Make sure your HDMI is in digital mode and not analog. This allows your monitor to do the scaling. Although, if you only have analog mode for HDMI, you can try using a DVI to HDMI cable. Or just wait for Nvidia to update the driver and you won't have to go through all this.
Update 2: March 15, 2010. Well it seems that Nvidia actually listened. I opened a technical ticket on their website and though I can't take credit for them actually solving this, I can tell you that they have put up a solution. New Optimus drivers are out on their website: version 189.42. The highlights of this release is eerily accurate to the issues I was having with my N61JV. It fixes the incompatibilities with the Intel IGP driver and corrects the Optimus Profile system. The sad news is I have already returned my N61JV almost 2 weeks before the...Read more›

I recently bought this laptop and it is just an amzing laptop with very good features and performance is mind-blowing...
The look is fantastic and has great design!
The processor is core i7 so its extremely fast.. It has 4 USB ports, webcam, microphone, HDMI, memory card reader etc..
Mouse touch-pad is also good as it has the style of Apple Mac book like, one can scroll or zoom with two fingers. so its very nice..
Internal features are very nice like backup, recovery, control panel features.
The most important thing is webcam. It has variety of features like zoom, auto-face detection, video recording, variety of effects, 3 to 10 images in one click etc etc..In addition, the microphone quality is also good with clear voice to opposite person chatting with us.
Also keyboard is very nice. Keys are widely separated and it has shortcut keys like internet explorer key, calculator, windows mail, and HP media smart.
Speakers are very nice as they are Altec-Lansing speakers.
In short, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants an amazing Laptop!

ASUS N61JQ-A1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) Review

Just got this. Looked at it for a few days on [...] to get detailed specs and customer reviews before purchasing. I only bought it on amazon because the next day shipping was cheaper (about $[...]) and the computer itself was $[...] less on amazon.
Haven't pushed the pedal to the metal as far as ram, HDD, and CPU go. There is an overclocking speed (called Turbo Boost) that is automatic. With windows 7 (instaleld) the Turbo Boost app lets you see the CPU ramping up. It shows that the CPU rutinely goes up to 2.6 Ghz when opening an application (not very intensive work) so I am not sure how accurate the gadget is, but we'll see. When compared to what else is out there, this coputer has much more for your money and is actually cheaper than many laptops with less power/graphics capability/coolness. Look at the prices at Best Buy for an Core i3 laptop. They are nearly $1000 and don't have as much ram, video memory, or upgrade potential. This is a Core i7, much more powerful and is less than alot of the laptops out there. Plus, Asus has a 1 year accidental warranty. Tops!
Pros:
-Amazon said it would be Brown, mine was black when I got it. Brown is ugly anyway!
- You can create a recovery DVD to fix everything in the event you scrw something up. Also, has a bootup recovery option built in, so even if you don;t have the disks, it can be recovered.
- 1 year replacement/repair "i dropped it in a pool" warranty.
-Shipping. For the price of the computer, get the 30.00 next day. I order by 3:00PM on thursday and had the computer booted up at 3:15PM friday.
-Nice looking computer. Great sound. Great price. (You can get a lesser model without the i7 CPU from Best Buy for 999.00)
-USB 3.0 is nice touch. Cool touchpad with "gesture" recognition.
-I like the screen. The resolution is said to be a little low/poor for the machine, but I do not yet find it to be a problem. You can zoom in and out using the touchpad and gestureing, so if the icons look to big/small, you can change it up without messing with screen resolution. Basically, you can keep it in 1377x768 mode. HD screen looks good to me. Bright too.
-HDMI output! You can hook this thing up to your big ass HD flat screen.
- With Windows 7, some "gadgets" aka iphone style "apps" that can be installed to the desktop require 32bit. This computer has the 64bit Windows 7 so you have to do some playin around to get those gadgets to work. Pandora is one of those. However, you can have a applet for Pandor Radio on the desktop without needing an open internet explorer window. Cool!
- POwer saving one-touch button. NOt sure how effcient it is yet.
- So far, Windows 7 is not that bad. Yet. :)CONS:
- A lot of "bloatware" on this baby. You have to sort throught it all and see what you like/don;t like and uninstall whatever you can live without.
- At initial boot up, 80 processes running! Ouch. 33% of RAM in use. That's over a Gig. Trim down the fat and you should be good.
-The first time I launched the "See how cool this Asus computer is" demo, I needed to lower the volume. Whn I did so, the computer locked up, blaring a annoying sound. I had to hold th epower button for 4 sec to turn off manually. Not cool. After that though, all seems cool.
- The keyboard is a little cheap, has some play to it. Go to Best BUy and type on one of their floor models to see if it is bad for you or not. Not a deal breaker for me, but kinda lame. The "full size keyboard is not true, it is laptop sized with a number padd on the right. The arrow keys (if you play games or use spreadsheets) are small and you can easily miss them and hit the 0 or control key.
Cool!
- A lot of Asus "this and that" programs to deal with. I uninstalled half of them.
BOTTOM LINE:
Buy it. Remove what you don't like. Great deal. If you were going to spend 800, drop an extra 2 bills and get this one. If you were going to spend 1200, save you money and get yourself a case for this one once you buy it.

HP ENVY 14-1010NR 14.5" Laptop (2.40GHz Intel Core i5-450M Processor, 6 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) Review

If I were a professor grading papers and if notebooks were research papers, the very first Envy 15 which debuted over a year ago definitely deserved a C+ grade. Imagine that the Envy 15 1st generation is a 5-8 page paper. A typical prof would give HP that very grade for good effort and creativity, but poor organization, sentence structure, and grammar and thus a rather low level of coherence altogether. The Envy 15 2nd Gen which came out less than a year after that corrected most of the infamous problems such as heating issues, creaky palmrests, and a jumpy touchpad. This refresh (or rewrite?) raised HP's grade to a B+. But while some may celebrate over a "most improved award," just as people tend to be more critical of a BMW 7-series than of your average, run-of-the-mill Corolla, the bar is set rather high for the luxury notebook segment that notebooks like the Envy and Macbook Pro fall into. Now onto the Envy 14. This time around, the grade for this notebook is rather controversial and definitely open to debate. The Envy 14 was released on June 27th. It was advertised as sporting HP's edge-to-edge 1600x900 Radiance Display which would afford the user better color reproduction and brightness than most if not all notebooks out there, yes, even better than the Macbook Pro's, ATI infin Without the (continually updating) Google touchpad software that can be found in the Trackpad Discussion thread of Notebookreview, this notebook IMO stays on the accursed borderline 89.5% which for many teachers can be a B+ grade or an A-. But with a 3rd party touchpad software written by a few good souls on notebookreview forums that leads to greatly improved two-finger scrolling, the Envy 14 gets a 93%. Just shy of A- but still in straight A territory. Toss in the Radiance display and you indeed get a potential top of the class paper not to mention another reason(with others to follow) for the professor to hand HP a letter of recommendation.NOTE: If anyone wants the Google software in question, go to notebook review forums (notebookreview.com), go to the HP section, and visit the HP Envy 14 Owners' lounge. The first page will have a link that takes you to the touchpad software lounge. Make an account and ask people to redirect you to the software because my goodness, you WILL want the drivers designed by reil for smooth 2-finger scroll! Ask someone there for reil's Google touchpad software. There's also a way to configure bottom left, bottom right and upper right as deadzones. I've configured the top right as right-click, the bottom left as go back a browser page, and the bottom right zone as go forward a browser page. Ask people on the Envy 14 notebook owners' lounge how to configure it!To HP: Great job. You not only get the most-improved award in my grade book. You get a 93%, which rounds up to an A. Not a strong A, mind you, but an A nonetheless. Keep up the good work, and work on those lingering issues. I expect to see great things from you in the future.
What I liked:
(1) Edge-to-edge screen. I don't mind for now that it's not genuine glass. Still have to admit the edge-to-edge black border gives the screen a nice look.
(2) Radiance Display - Bravo. Need I say more? If this screen isn't good enough for photographers, I don't know WHAT is!
(3) Keyboard - It's simply fantastic. It's a joy to type on. The LED backlit keyboard may not be bright as the Macbook Pro's, but it's still bright enough to use at night time when there's low or no light.
(4) Aesthetics - I've already drawn many glances with this notebook. Also to those who're concerned with how "fruity" the design looks, the laser etchings really grow on ya. The thin/light form factor and the laser-etched drawings really ooze of quality and refinement when you hold it.
(5) Specs - With the i5 processor and the ATI 5650, you can game on StarCraft 2 easily at medium settings. My suggestion is still to get a cooling pad as thin and light notebooks CAN get hot.A few critiques on areas which upon consideration and improvement will put the Envy 14 closer to A+ territory:
(1) Keep working on the touchpad software and install a real clickpad. Work with Synaptics on improving it so that we don't have to rely on the good will and charity of software coders in the NBR community. Improve 2-finger scroll and toss in inertial scrolling, 3-finger swipes, and 4-finger swipes.
(2) Consider doing away with the optical drive when the time is right. I understand some people need their DVD drive. That's fine. But in the future, if it'll shave off a lot of weight and allow for the installation of a 3rd fan, I'm willing to pay the usual $40 for an external optical drive. (Yes, it's true. The HP Envy 15 comes with 3 fans because the absence of an optical drive creates enough real estate for the 3rd fan)
(3) Backlit keyboard - This isn't really a criticism. But making the brightness adjustable would certainly tempt me to toss in another % point to your grade.
(4) Build Construction - I had an argument with the other "professors" over this. A tiny bit of keyboard flex which I myself barely noticed is fine for now. A little flex with an optical drive to boot is understandable. I gave you a high score in this area, but try to get rid of the flex. Until then, repeat after me: Perception. Matters. Take this from someone who worked several months at Subway serving some really particular customers!.
(5) Find a way to get rid of that God-awful CPU whine. I know this isn't HP-specific, but if HP could find a way to reduce the sound or get rid of completely, that would be a Godsend!************UPDATE FOR SEPTEMBER 9, 2010************
It's been about a month and a half since I first bought and started using the Envy 14. I have to say that two issues really bothered me:
(1) Synaptics engineers decided to be a bunch of lazy jerks by omitting the option to turn off the touchpad while typing. I mean, seriously? If you're going to specialize in something, the least you can do is do the job right!
(2) The screen touches the keyboard when closed. The interesting part is it doesn't leave behind any permanent scratches. It just leaves smudges. The first problem was easily solved by installing a third party software called "Paradisoft Touchpad Locker. Google it and you will find it. It is free and easy to install.
I've found that my touchpad problems have been reduced by at least 90% as a result of the software.

i've had this computer for more than a year and im very impressed with its performance. Its fast, quiet but it heats so much. the touch panel that includes volume control, play/pause/stop and wifi (on/off) stop working on the 10th month of use. that fact is irritating since i used a lot the touch panel to mute the computer sound and to turn off/on my wifi.
besides the touch panel situation the performance of the computer is amazing. i use it to run engineering swoftwares and never had any problems.

Yeah, I guess you could be upset that you didn't get some complimentary swag or whatever with this machine, but I didn't buy it for swag.
Let's get down to business, shall we?
Pluses: Gorgeous, smooth graphics in Star Trek Online, DDO, Champions Online and Team Fortress 2 with the sliders cranked just shy of the max. EAX sound is amazing: even sounds decent out of the built-in speakers (really rocks with my headphones though). CPU performance and multitasking is sweet and responsive. I have multi-surfed Word, Visual Studio and Photoshop CS with no lag or issues.
More ports than you can shake a stick at: plenty of USB, eSATA, FireWire (1394) and even HDMI (which outputs to full 1080p if that floats your boat). Bluetooth devices are easily paired. Amazing Windows 7 performance (rates a 5.9 Windows Experience out of the box, with 6.6s in graphics, before any tweaking)
This thing is a sweet PC for money.
Cons: Runs hot. Be sure to keep side vents for cooling free. Might be worth investing in a cooling mat for this bad boy. Also, can we please not pre-install a bunch of crap on our new, high-performance gaming machines? I had to uninstall a bunch of cheesey ASUS games and stuff before I could really get down to business.

ASUS N61JQ-XV1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) Review

ASUS N61JQ-XV1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There wasn't many reviews out there about this system so i decided to leave one. A laptop with i7 OMG! This is just a note: Most of the software pre-installed on this system are 64-bit versions so if your wondering why some of the same programs on your 32-bit computer have been updated or newer versions available that is why. I discovered that after i deleted some of them and found out the 32-bit versions of the programs wouldn't work on this computer windows update would constantly give me an ERROR message trying to update the 32-bit software so I had to re-download the 64-bit versions.
PROS:
I have never owned a 64-bit computer or a laptop before and I have always bought Dell desktops in the past. After searching around for months i couldn't find a laptop with these specs and price tag as the ASUS N61JQ Laptop anywhere. Newegg.com had the same laptop at the same price however Amazon offered free 2-day shipping so i went with Amazon. I received this laptop about 3 weeks ago and i couldn't be happier with my decision. It is a powerhouse and does everything i throw at it without a hiccup. I do a lot of TV recording and commercial editing and video editing and file transfers and downloading with a little gaming thrown in there and it does all the above flawlessly. It is incredibly faster than my 32-bit XPS Dell Desktop and its in laptop form! It runs at about 50-60 degrees Celsius during normal use however i did buy a Targus cooler. I have never seen the temp over 67 C. So far i have not had any negative things to say about its performance. I found most of the bloatware pre-installed on this system somewhat useful so i only had to remove a few programs i did not need. I plan to upgrade my DVD drive to blu-ray. I recommend buying Cyberlink Power DVD 10 with this system. It makes watching dvd's or videos look amazing! but that's just personal preference. The brown color of the cover on this laptop looks black with a hint of dark dark brown. You cant tell its brownish unless you shine a light right on it. I think it looks really classy.
The 3.0 UBS port is AWESOME! Copy movies and TV shows to my external in like seconds. I did a complete back up of my ASUS primary hard rive (138GB) and it transferred everything to my external hard drive in about 5 minutes!! The 64-bit IE Browser seems to me to be considerably faster then the 32-bit browser. All of the slots are on the sides (i.e. power chord plug in, USB, Ethernet) because the screen folds to low in the back to have any there.
CONS:
Since this computer is a powerhouse the battery only lasts about 45 to 90 minutes under normal use and since the screen hangs down so low in the back I'm not sure if you can get a bigger battery for it or not. So if you don't mind having your laptop plugged in most of the time i would definitely recommend this laptop. I would consider it more of a sleek and stylish portable desktop till they make a bigger battery for it. The screen seems dull to me(compared to HD TV's) but for a HD screen on a laptop that's not really a complaint. I wish the keys were back-lit. And this isn't really a complaint about the system itself per say but I have discovered that there isn't many programs out there yet designed for 64-bit computers. Even the browsers out there are still in beta stages. Even though i would prefer 64-bit software, most of the 32-bit programs will still run on a 64-bit system. Hope this review was helpful! If anyone has any more questions feel free to ask me: bobber311@hotmail.com

ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black) Review

ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just received this laptop. It does NOT come with a backpack or a mouse (it was written that backpack and mouse are included in G73SW-XA1 on Amazon's product page, but this text was later removed). :-(
The material quality is great. Feels sturdy. Quite heavy, as expected.
Screen is glossy and has 1920*1080 resolution.
Windows experience index details are:
Processor - 7.4
RAM - 7.6
Graphics - 7.0
Gaming graphics - 7.0
Primary hard disk - 5.9
Computer has 8GB of 1333Mhz RAM (4x 2GB), so it'll be expensive to upgrade RAM to 12GB(2*2 + 4*2) or 16GB(4*4) (since there are no extra free slots and you'll have to throw away existing RAM).
There is an empty 2.5" HDD compartment where I'm planning to install OCZ Technology 120 GB Vertex 2 Series SATA II 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G (I like the 750GB HDD + 120GB SSD configuration better than 500GB HDD + 500GB HDD).
Hard disk comes partitioned 174GB in C:\ and 502GB in D:\. Lots of stuff that I had to deinstall. The disk is Seagate ST9750420AS.
DVD writer drive is Matshita UJ8A0ASW (supports burning to Dual Layer 8.5GB DVD+R DL). WiFi is Atheros AR9285. Bluetooth is Broadcom BT-270.
For those of you who have heard about the Intel Sandy Bridge problem - yes, it does have "New revision. Certified design" sticker.
Also has "NVidia 3DTVPLAY" sticker, so it should be possible to connect laptop to a 3D-capable TV or projector via HDMI.
Overall, I highly recommend this laptop.

This is my very first laptop, and I am impressed! I wanted to get the latest chipset and a decent graphics card. I have used other laptops b4 but the prices on the "name brand" deals are outrageous. I am a gamer geek, and I play an online interactive RPG, I can log on wirelessly and play for hours!!! Gigabyte really did a great job here. The one and only complaint I have is the keys are kinda big, but it does come with a full size number pad, so that is good. I love it!

HP ENVY 17-1011NR 17.3-Inch Laptop Review

At the end of the day performance is the most important measure of success to me and this machine lives up to expectations here - its definately snappy. In regards to games, I've installed Dragon Age, Borderlands, Crysis - all run great at maximum settings. I'm confident this machine will handle my gaming needs for the next couple of years.
Nice fit and finish. Lots of metal bits and overall solid feel. Its not exactly light but for a 17" its respectable. It looks good enough to leave out when company is over. I had some concern buying site unseen because I know the previous envy models didn't quite deliver in this are - but I think overall this version meets the bar. Its not a mac book - but it gets pretty close.
Battery life has been good so far - the extra 9 volt battery is an awesome bonus.
It does have a blu ray drive.
The screen is beautiful - super clear, detailed and bright.
So in the two primary areas that drove me to purchase this vs. other 17" gaming machines - performance and aesthetic - this machine delivers.
I have a few usability complaints though..
The mouse pad. The problem here is that the click buttons are also part of the touch bad - so when go to click on things your clicking finger will move the cursor. This happens often enough to be very frustrating.. maybe a patch will come out that will address. In the meantime I've been having to plug in an external mouse because I can't take it.
The PC does something strange when it sleeps - when you open the lid it will resume but the screen doesn't come back so you have to open and close the lid once again and that will make the screen turn on. Not a big deal but a bug that bothers me. And the lid is a bit of pain to open - no real place to get a good grip and its tight and heavy. Its more like prying it open rather than the nice smooth lid opening experience of the mac book.
Too much cluttering software pre installed and Windows disk not included making a clean install difficult.
The Beats audio is not that exciting - but i didn't expect it to be. Sounds like a laptop to me at the end of the day.

Ok, this is the fastest laptop I have ever owned. I actually bought the one with the p7450 2.13GHz, but I upgraded to the P8700 myself. I bought a Refurbished Asus G50VT.
With Vista on it is ok, but with Windows 7 on it its awesome. It can play Far Cry 2 and Call Of Duty MW2 on the highest settings. When playing these games, the video card got to 86C after an hour. My frame rate was in the High 20s mid 30s on the highest settings. The hottest the CPU ever got was 72C. Before I upgraded the CPU, it would idle at in the mid 30s(C). After I upgraded it and used Antec Formula 5 it now idles at 27-29C. The GPU idles at 42C and gets to around 50-55 while surfing the net or watching a video. This laptop runs cool compared to other laptops.
Some people have asked if it can handle 8GB of ram. After little research I found that it can take up to 8GB of memory. 8GB (2x4GB) on eBay costs about $240. Now for battery life.
On power save with the screen on the dimmest I get about 3-3.5 hours of life. Some people think that the light and design on the lid look bad, but I think it looks cool. I just wish that you could turn them off sometimes. Hard drive transfers at about 22 MBPS with Windows 7.
Overall its an excellent laptop. I paid $700 for mine on eBay. 5 Star Laptop!
Pros:
Fast Processor
Good Video Card
Big HDD
Long Battery Life
Fast Wireless Card
Excellent frame rates in latest games
Runs very cool
Cons
Lid Design looks bad to some
Screen slightly low resolution
Can't put a quad core in it

I got this computed in December 2008 to replace and HP Pavilion that had major problems and was stuck in HP customer service repair limbo with me sending it back and forth to the service center. The HP lasted 14 months and had better features but when it overheated apparently due to a defective Nvidia graphics card that is in present in thousands of units of many laptop manufacturers. One day in October 2008, the thing literally stopped functioning and required major repair work just to boot up properly. Not wanting to waste anymore time with HP, I opted for a Dell XPS 1530. The problems with this laptop are many and the HP had better features such as better response with the touchpad and also DVD ROM drive that played any disc even poorly recorded DVD-Rs. I've had many problems with my Dell's DVD Rom drive and it even scratched a few of the regular DVD's I've tried playing.
Last month, the Hard Drive had a major failure and required to be remounted. Dell Customer Service sent me a new hard drive within a week, but it was only 100 gig replacement. The original hard drive was much bigger than this and now I have a computer that is already running low on disk space. I'm not sure how long this machine will last and given the history of Dells that I've used in the past 5 years, every computer (whether desktop or laptop) always has a major problem every 12 months or so. It is like servicing a 4-year old car, but it isn't even a year old. And this how they make all their profits selling warranties and charging for extra repair work for the cheap aftermarket components that they install in these expensive laptops.
Other negatives about this laptop include sticking keys that sometimes won't work correctly until you press on them firmly. The dashboard on the laptop is not very responsive, mainly the volume control as you tap on it multiple times and it still won't respond sometimes. The DVD playback while working initially, didn't function and started to suddenly scratch my DVD's and so I stopped using it. The keyboard is also feel somewhat cramped and the touchpad is smaller than my previous HP and less responsive. This model of laptop also has been commonly known to overheat and I have measured the temperature using a 3rd party program and found it hitting some strangely high temperatures. This apparently is an issue with the Nvidia card and it apparently shares the same model (GeForce 8400 GS) as my old HP.
The few positives about this laptop include the fact is doesn't weigh a lot when carrying it. And it performs faster than standard Dells such as the Latitude line which take a lot of time doing basic functions such as multitasking with spreadsheets and Email. I would recommend this laptop to anyone who is doing very basic tasks for school, word processing or work related activities that don't require massive amounts of memory to complete. Be sure you have an external hard drive to back up you're data and purchase an extended 2-3 year warranty. It will literally stop working within a year.

Read the product description very carefully, and if it seems to have what you think you are looking for in graphic card, memory, WS/HD display, hard drive, lightning fast I7-740QM processor and all the other bells and whistles, then this is what you are looking for! We have had this only about 6 days now and have loaded it with designing software, CS5, Norton, almost 10k photos and family videos, and it is kicking at Secretariat speed. My wife wanted a new laptop for graphic desigining, and I did comprehensive research for almost a week before deciding that the Sony VAIO VPC-F13YFX/B was the way to go. This decision was somewhat jumping into new territory a bit because there were literally no customer reviews available on the internet being this is a new Sony model. By comparing older models, and the upgraded equipment in this one, I felt we couldn't go wrong. So far, I am happy with that decision!
This laptop plays movies as well as any HD TV, and with the HDMI out port, you can hook it up to your LED TV for high quality HDTV for the gameroom. (The blu-ray player is an upgrade option if you desire). The sound coming from the speakers is impressive, and playing music through them is pleasant listening to. The 3.0 ports, bluetooth, webcam, WIFI ready and the awesome graphic card means nothing is left out. Now if I can only convince her to get one for myself!!!
With the 1 year warranty and 1 year in home service, Sony is standing by it's product and that comforts me a little when paying this much for an unreviewed product.
One month update- This laptop is extremely efficient, and as I said before, FAST! We have upgraded to a new "N" router and utilizing a cable modem, it connects up to 300 MBPS! Working on her Masters, my wife uses this for school every day with a live camera system for credibility. We have experienced zero drop offs from the web, and are very pleased with this products overall "Live" internet performance. LOVE the big 16.4" HD/WS Display! The keyboard is solid and VERY well built, unlike most laptop keyboards which are plastic keys and click when you type.
The only glitch we have come across is that there is "Google Chrome" Web Browser software pre-installed on the computer, which we are unfamiliar with (We use I.E.). We decided to delete it, and that was a mistake! It affected multiple programs, so we re-installed it and leave it in hiding. One program that it affects is Microsoft Outlook email (Hyperlinks do not work for some reason, a very well known and discussed problem on the internet) which my wife prefers over Windows Live Mail because it will Sync her phone with her calendar, contacts etc. via Bluetooth. Outlook is an additional program we have added along with the entire Microsoft Office Suite. You can use Windows Live Mail which is pre-installed if you like it better, it just doesn't SYNC with our phones.
Overall, a fantastic purchase and wonderful product! This computer fits the cliche' "Spend a little more and get a little more", only you get a LOT more. This is our first Sony VAIO, and will NOT be our last!!!!

ASUS N73SV-XC1 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum) Review

ASUS N73SV-XC1 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this laptop for about one week. It appears to be well made and to contain many high-end components for the price. This is my second Asus laptop. I bought both because of Asus' reported quality and that Asus and Toshiba have the lowest laptop failure rates. The LED screen, although not full HD, is sharp and I have no complaints. The keyboard is easy to use although it took me a little time to get used to it because it is slightly larger than my previous Sony laptop keyboard. It is not back lighted.
On the negative side, the sound system is not at all what I expected after all the Bang & Olufsen ICEpower hype. While the speakers sound better than other laptops I've heard, they lack bass and depth leaning heavily towards treble and the higher sounds. I have tried to adjust up the bass using the supplied Asus SonicMaster feature to no avail. Further, the digital Users' Manual is minimal in size and content. It does not even address subjects like the sound system. I'm now using my USB-controlled Altec-Lansing speakers ($100) and they sound very good...as they did with my last laptop.
Additionally, the laptop is not the advertised "Silver Aluminum" color. The top is a very nice brushed aluminum but it is a graphite color...not the light "Silver Aluminum" I expected. Not a big deal. The graphite color is very pleasing. My 13" Asus "Silver Aluminum" laptop IS silver aluminum.
This new Asus N73SV-XC1 laptop is very enjoyable to use. It is quiet and has not overheated. I believe it is a lot of computer for the price and I would recommend it.
