Intel DP55KG Extreme Series Desktop Motherboard (P55 ATX Core i7 Core i5 LGA1156) Review

Intel DP55KG Extreme Series Desktop Motherboard (P55 ATX Core i7 Core i5 LGA1156)

I decided to build a computer after a 10 year hiatus.
SPECS:
I chose this motherboard, 4gb (2x2g)Corsair XMS 3 1600mhz ram,the new unlocked Intel i-875K processor cooled by a Corsair Hydro H50. Also went with Ultra X4 750 watt modular Power Supply, Hitachi 1gb 7200rpm Sata HD, Lite-On 24x DVD+RW, the LEXA S Case, and the EVGA GTX480 video card, and Asus XONAR Essence ST Soundcard. I have a 30 inch Dell 3008WFP Monitor, Apple Blue-tooth Wireless Keyboard and Logitech Performance Mouse MX to complete out my build. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64bit 1 user OEM.
INSTALL:
It took me most of a Friday night to get this built. Mostly because the back plate of the Cooler doesn't fit correctly, I had to live with some bow in the back plate to get the 4th screw in. But all and all not too bad. It booted fine the first time. I didn't realize you can't use a Blue-tooth Keyboard at first so I had to grab an older cordless usb Microsoft one to actually set up Windows. The motherboard lined us great with my case and the SATA Cables and many of the other cables were able to route behind the motherboard through rubberized holes in the case. I had no issues installing the motherboard at all, just fine, and well laid out to plug in 4 fans, a water cooler, sata plugs, case front panel wires, power wires, etc. A+++
PERFORMANCE:
I didn't know how to overclock anymore after 10 years. So I read some stuff googling and wasn't sure and instead just used the Intel Desktop Control Panel to experiment. I ended up setting the Ram to 1600mhz and only changing the multiplier to 29x in quad config, 30 in three, and 31 in 2 and single core. I get a score of about 9,000 on CPU Mark. That was all I needed to do, no changing voltages or any of the rest of it. That is what worked best and has run cool and solid ever since.
FEATURES:
The blue-tooth doesn't work for my Apple keyboard, it recognizes it, lets you type in the code but loses connection, so I use a small usb dongle instead. The Video Card sits fine. There is some bling you can turn on in the bios for lights and a blue skull with glowing red eyes. I turned it on high since I have a case window. The real feature is the Intel Control Panel. It shows temps, overclock settings and fan speeds and lets you save profiles. That is a great feature and now that I am done overclocking, I don't use the bios anymore. I also downloaded the latest drivers and firmware from Intel. Paired with the Asus Soundcard (got because of the powerful headphone amp built in) I just use Grado SR-80 and Sennheiser RS140 wireless headphones and a set of Altec Lansing FX6021 speakers.
FINAL IMPRESSION: For me this was a good jump back in to building my own computer. I wasn't satisfied with anything pre-built that I could afford. Building my own let me spend in the areas I valued. The Intel Board was a great choice because it runs well and is very expandable with a second or even third video card and lots of SATA and USB Ports. Get one!

ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 17-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black) Review

ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 17-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)

In short this computer is amazing. You wont find anything else under $2000 that can beat this. It comes with a standard 2 year warrant and 1 year accidental damage warranty plus a 30 day zero bright dot policy. The included mouse and bag are also great. So far I have been playing crysis and bad company 2(a great game for your new computer) on near full detail with amazing frames with the ati radean 5870(best single graphics card for laptops), 8gb of 1066mhz ram, and the new blazing fast core i7 processor. Although the computer is the size of some 18 inchers, I found that it looked and felt amazing. The whole back, palm rest area, and keys are rubberized which provides a great feel and grip. The keys are also back lit and the speakers on the computer are very loud and provide good audio The one thing I did not like about this computer was the touch pad buttons (not the touchpad its self which is great) are combined under a plastic cover which is really hard to press down on.
Pros:
Best for the price
Back lit keyboard
rubberized feels great
Best single graphics card ati 5870 with 1gb gddr5 ram
8gb of ram is more than enough
Great processor
Cool unique look
and i can just keep going on and on..
Cons:
Touch pad buttons I find hard to press down on
Number pad on keyboard feels squished
Overall 10/10
And as I said before this is the best!
Update after about 3 months
of use
I have already lost nearly all the rubber feet which do not seem attached well (medium problem). The keyboard has a lot of light bleeding through under the ` key (minor). And the worst problems i have experienced, my computer overheats! It shuts its self down randomly and i do not believe that the fan over the CPU is working (very major). I have sent it in for RMA with asus and will post an update later.
If i could change my rating I would give it 3.5-4 stars.

ASUS N53JF-A1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum) Review

ASUS N53JF-A1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am glad I decided on this laptop. Price vs. performance it is an absolute value and the speakers are awesome! They sound great for some little dinkey laptop speakers. The screen is great and YouTube HD videos are very nice, even though the laptop is only 720p or what ever. HD is HD unless you absolutely have to have full HD the display is great. The screen does fold back further than what I've used in a laptop which makes for an especially comfortable viewing angle sitting on the floor. I don't experience the phenomenon of keyboard flex. Then again I don't mash on mine when I'm frustrated. I reserve that for my head. Keys are decent in size and a number pad is always a plus. The physical appearance of the computer is beautiful and dark aluminum grey. The Geforce 425 video card is DirectX 11 which is new technology and 1GB of video memory is great. I don't really have any complaints about this laptop except for the battery life. I've only been able to squeeze about 3 hours of this 6 cell. It might not make for a great portable unless you had a 9 cell battery. However this laptop could make a pretty good desktop replacement if your on a budget. The Asus 2 year standard warranty is great considering you only get 1 with Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. 1 year standard accidental warranty. I would recommend this laptop.

Lenovo Y550P 324156U 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

After using Macs exclusively for 3 years, I switched back to Windows because of one reason: I wanted a quad core laptop (i7 specifically) and Apple has yet to make one. Furthermore, I know that when they do it will only be offered at first on the highest end of the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro models and will likely cost between $1800-$2200. When this laptop went on sale for $999.99, I knew I could no longer justify staying with Apple because $999.99 just happens to be the price of their lowest end laptop. For $999.99 (PC vs Mac) you can get processor quad core vs. dual core, HD 500GB vs 250GB, Ram 4GB vs 2GB, max ram 8GB vs 4GB, LCD 13.3" vs 15.6", and internal graphics of 256MB shared vs 1GB discrete. To me this is no contest. I was able to switch my Adobe programs over to PC by calling Adobe customer service and performing a cross platform swap. I needed to update my MS Office suite anyway so I didn't mind spending $170 to get MS Office Home/Student 2007 plus Outlook 2007. I will describe my experience with the Lenovo through a Pro/Con list, and I will compare the Apple and PC experience where necessary.
Pros:
*i7 quad-core laptop for $999.99
*i7 quad-core = very, very fast
*1GB discrete graphics will satisfy every need except only the highest of professional/gaming graphics processing needs.
*looks very nice and seems well-built
*4GB of ram is enough for now and the option to expand to 8GB later is great
*ExpressCard 34, eSATA and SD card slots are most welcome
Cons:
*fan is audible a good bit of the time, and most of the time during even moderate application usage. I was aware of this issue with quad-core laptops prior to purchase so it did not come as a surprise, but at the same time I do think it belongs on the con list
*terrible sound output quality and volume from the built-in speakers
*terrible sound output quality and volume as well as crackling/popping while using external speakers, so terrible that I had to buy a Creative XFI Expresscard Sound Card (which did, incidentally, fix all of the audio issues)
*audio out jack located on the front of the laptop (I know this is all too common on today's laptops but it is annoying nonetheless; the Creative XFI card also solved this issue)
*occasional high pitch whine (the source of which is still under investigation) which can be quite annoying
*location of the cooling fan inlet vent means that you will not be able to use this on your lap or on top of a bedspread unless you first put a hard flat object under the laptop first; the laptop essentially is designed to only be placed on hard flat surfaces
*no DVI, mini-DVI or mini-DisplayPort ports; HDMI and VGA (VGA?!?!?!?!) are the only video ports
*the built-in trackpad experience is truly atrocious: the trackpad has a raised grid surface (instead of a flat smooth surface like 99% of the laptops made) which makes navigation uncomfortable and imprecise. In addition, the scrolling bar is laughably unusable. It is made for hands with fingers the size of baby's fingers and using it requires tapping down once first to turn it on; one can not simply move their fingers over it to scroll
*battery life is terrible, but I knew this going in because all quad-core laptops have terrible battery life as a result of their power-hungry processors. You will not get the 4.5 hours of battery life as advertised, trust me. I don't know how they were able to achieve that number but virtually everything must have been disabled and/or turned all the way down.\
*a moderate amount of bloatware which I am still deleting/tinkering with after a week of ownership
*built-in LCD not particularly stunning but I find nothing objectionable about it either
*would have liked to get Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate considering this is a high-end laptop but I did know prior to purchase of course that I was only getting Windows 7 Home
*hard drive came partitioned into 4 parts which is very, very annoying. In addition a few of them took up massive amounts of hard drive space for no apparent reason. It took me a few days of messing around with various freeware utilities to get all (but the essential) of them deleted. (hint: check out the free "Ultimate Boot CD" it is what finally got rid of the pesky partitions that Windows disk utility wouldn't let me touch)
In my opinion, this is your basic garden-variety "desktop replacement" laptop. With an external keyboard, mouse and monitor this makes a great desktop that can sometimes be carried out of the home when need be. I find the "laptop only" experience to be sub-par. This is perfectly suitable for someone like me since my laptops have always spent over 95% of their time at home plugged into external I/O devices. If you are someone who is just the opposite, however, I can not recommended this unit because of the issues described above. Overall, I am satisfied with the unit primarily due to the performance specs and the price. There is just no arguing with the value of an i7 laptop with 1GB discrete graphics for $999.99. The length of the con list, however, was sufficient to cause me to drop the rating to 4/5.

I've had this laptop for 3 weeks now. I haven't even had time to really push it to it's potential because it has so much to offer. Don't know about any wireless malfunctioning. Mine works just fine anywhere I go, in an N or G WIFI environment. I use it at home using my DOCSIS 3 cable internet with gigabit wired network or WIFI N class whenever I want to move to an unwired room, and I have not had a problem at all. The HDMI 1080P HD output using the onboard blueray is simply fantastic when hooked up to my LED flatscreen TV. Simply put, this laptop is flawless. Just a beautiful machine, with a gorgeous screen, big sound and a great useable keyboard. You will not be disappointed buying this laptop. I am certainly very satisfied.

HP Pavilion dv6-3052nr 15.6-Inch Entertainment Laptop (Silver) Review

HP Pavilion dv6-3052nr 15.6-Inch Entertainment Laptop (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: Processor and GPU are excellent. I have ran Star Craft 2 on ultra settings without any issues. WoW on ultra except for shadows and get roughly 45 FPS in Dalaran. Minimal bloatware only took about 10 mins to remove.
Its a beautiful machine. The case has some kind of artsy pattern on it.
loading times are low thanks to the 7200 RPM drive. other laptops in this price range didn't have this. I was able to copy the 18GB WoW from my main computer to this in about 4-5 mins (via ethernet cable not wireless).
Cons: the display resolution is a little low for the size. I've seen other laptops in this size range with superior displays. In spite of this, the resolution is worth the sacrifice in exchange for everything else being so powerful.
The touch pad is a bit strange. The buttons are part of the pad. This means that while your trying to click on something you can accidentally move the mouse, however the sensitivity is very good.

I recently bought this laptop and it is just an amzing laptop with very good features and performance is mind-blowing...
The look is fantastic and has great design!
The processor is core i7 so its extremely fast.. It has 4 USB ports, webcam, microphone, HDMI, memory card reader etc..
Mouse touch-pad is also good as it has the style of Apple Mac book like, one can scroll or zoom with two fingers. so its very nice..
Internal features are very nice like backup, recovery, control panel features.
The most important thing is webcam. It has variety of features like zoom, auto-face detection, video recording, variety of effects, 3 to 10 images in one click etc etc..In addition, the microphone quality is also good with clear voice to opposite person chatting with us.
Also keyboard is very nice. Keys are widely separated and it has shortcut keys like internet explorer key, calculator, windows mail, and HP media smart.
Speakers are very nice as they are Altec-Lansing speakers.
In short, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants an amazing Laptop!

Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV LED TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV LED TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
^*If I could I would give it 3 1/2 stars. I really couldn't decide between the two, so please get as much as you can out of the context.*^
Quick Pros and Cons--
Pros:
Packed with cutting edge hardware
Decent display
3D BLU RAY!!
Great looks
Decent speakers for portable
Pretty justifiable for gaming but not perfect
Nvidia 3d package and software is impressive
Cons:
Runs extremely hot
Short battery life
3d can be a gimmick depending on the content
SLOW boot times can be up to 2 minutes from complete shutdown state
3d Glasses are very uncomfortable and don't have great coverage
Performance is not always solid and framerate drops do occurThe Toshiba A665 3DV Laptop: One of three (competing with Asus and Acer) brand new 3D capable notebooks to enter the market. Personally this was a budget-wise entrance into the much hyped recent 3d technology. I can honestly say that the 3d hype eventually got to me in and I decided to narrow my search for a 3d capable laptop instead of just a standard notebook.
**Overview**:
I caught wind somehow of a new PC/X360 game called 'Sniper Ghost Warrior'. It looked like a ton of fun and I really wanted to get back in touch with my earlier PC gaming days. Being a diehard playstation gamer myself, I figured this to be the opportune point to buy my first laptop. More importantly however, this is a much cheaper solution to get into the world of 3d without spending a fortune because 3D TVs as of now are upwards of 2000 dollars, include that with the limited 3d-capable software of consoles and you have a real pocket gouge.

**Review**
Let me make this very clear: The Tiding factor in my decision between this model and the Asus g51j 3d model was the capability of 3D BLU RAY! This is HUGE. Not only is a blu ray player a very nice bonus, but the implementation of a software patch later this year will allow you to watch whatever blu rays are available in 3d. Once again, this comes down to the price point: being an efficient machine that does it all without having to go buy a 3d capable BD player and TV. Whether you would rather watch your movies on the big screen is an entirely different story.
Let me just say, the blu ray playback(no 3d) on this display has been fairly disappointing. I am so peculiar with my displays, I like my pixels very tight and my image razor sharp but not overblown. I hate a soft and dull image. This screen isn't that, but it's not what I expected. I used 'Crank' on Blu Ray as demo material(one of the most pixel popping blu rays out) and I was not extremely impressed. I used one great reference scene where the camera is following Jason Statham down a brick alley, the white artisan style bricks usually have so much depth and crystal clear pixels. They just didn't seem to pop as much with this display. However further viewing proved the display and BD Drive to be ample for viewing, however it doesn't match up to a great small-medium 720p TV in my opinion, which doesn't seem possible: Generally the smaller the screen, the higher the pixel count(more pixels "built in) to the LCD screen and the sharper the picture(take the super sharp display of the apple iPad. The screen is so tiny but the resolution is virtually double because there are so many pixels on such a little screen). But then again this is a computer, not a TV, and I guess with the 3d capability it almost makes up for it.
--Gaming is a much different and extremely complex situation as far as graphics. All games are developed differently, have different settings, and you can tune settings in game and in windows providing a hugely complex situation which I can't firmly give a good answer as to how it looks. All I will say is that coming from console gaming (where graphics generally aren't pushed to the limits) this display is more than enough to fit my graphics tastes.

--Onto the hardware for gaming: I think in general terms, this computer packs more than enough hardware to get the job done... by the books and on paper, HOWEVER: On my first playthrough of sniper ghost warrior (a very pleasing game visually, but no crysis) I quickly ran into some framerate issues on the first mission(not even with 3d on). Not huge at all, but at a certain point in the map things would start to slow down/lag and if I jumped or looked in a certain direction things would get jaggy but not unplayable at all. It was hard at first to get over that tiny little hiccup however, seeing that I just dropped $1600 for a top notch, technologically supreme piece of hardware(this thing was built for gaming and media). Just playing Left 4 Dead 2 (in 3d) last night I ran into some huge framerate issues, but mostly at the very end of the mission.
--Early Problems/Performance issues:
I ran into some very frustrating issues early on, but it seems to be working itself out fairly decently now.
**PLEASE HERE ME LOUD AND CLEAR ON THIS: I suspect that these framerate issues may be a result of the hard drive, even though it is a 7200rpm, I'm not sure what other specs it has(cache etc.), however I can't imagine that it's too sophisticated due to it being a laptop drive. The main reason I suspect that it is the hard drive is because in general use, this thing has terrible seek times. The One thing that really got to me was that from a shutdown state, this laptop takes a SOLID Minute to 2 minutes JUST TO BOOT UP. I mean I'm talking you can't do a single thing, not even open the task manager(ctrl-alt-delete) while it's booting up. All you can due is stare at the time glass. For some reason though it doesn't always take this long to boot up. It seems like it's getting a lot better, I think I just booted up last time in about 30 seconds or less. The only thing I can figure is that it has really arranged things and prioritized allowing the most important things to be processed first. I've also run into slow multitasking and program running a few times. I have a feeling that the frame rate drops in L4D2 were a result of something else happening, possibly even a BS automatic windows update that starts without notification or permission(though you can turn them off).
I also ran into problems with the 3d glasses losing sync, flashing, flickering all the time, until I realized that the transmitter works best pointed directly at the glasses, unlike most bluetooth/wireless hardware.
--Aesthetics:
The laptop itself looks very savvy, has great innovative looks and seems to be durable and solid. The lid and main chassis(under the keyboard) has a matted, thin linked chain pattern finish. It's pretty eye catching and helps minimize fingerprints. The mouse pad melts right into the rest of the the base, without being recessed which I liked. Overall it's a pretty good looking piece. The keys are smooth plastic and feel great. They have a great, thin, lightweight feel to them without being flimsy or cheap feeling. The only thing I didn't really like was that the lid doesn't lock, it just closes flush with the base. Not really a big deal but I was just used to that with my brother's laptop. I should also note that the keyboard is not backlit. Some of the manufacturers misleadingly label a whole series as having a "backlit keyboard", when in fact only some models have a fully lit keyboard. This model has a thin lit bar at the top of the mouse pad along with a LED under the logo in the corner and the media controls at the top being lit. One of the media controls themselves is the button to which you turn the lighting on or off. They lay flat/flush with the chassis and are touch sensitive, no actual button mashing.
One thing I hate: LITTERED WITH STICKERS!!! Most noticeably is a MASSIVE sticker with the model and different features all with logos and a 25th toshiba anniversary graphic in the bottom right covering more than half the distance from the right side to mouse pad. Combined with, oh, a half dozen other stickers and the smooth aesthetics are immediately killed, but you won't be bothered by that for long.
--Inputs/outputs:
This laptop has pretty basic I/Os. 3 USB ports, power cord, standard computer monitor out, ethernet, a hard drive connection, HDMI out, and headphone and microphone jacks.
++ This is somewhat of a disappointment for audiophiles as there are no audio outs( optical would be nice but I don't even know if any laptops utilize that). You're basically left with an 1/8 jack which you could buy various cables and adapters. Of course you could use HDMI, but as a fairly new format not all stereo receivers and audio devices are going to have that. The only reason I really criticize is because I'm into music production which relies on tons of higher end cable formats that you simply aren't going to get to communicate with a PC without lots of trouble. For everyone else these I/Os should be fine. Oh, there's a SD memory card slot on the front side. Also the harmon kardon speakers are quite impressive for their tiny size. They have okay bass and they don't sound cheap. Any type of surround is represented poorly however and gamers and audiophiles will quickly be turning over to their favorite headset.
--Battery Life:
I haven't adequately tested it but I estimate it at about an hour to two hours, gaming or just general OS usage. I guess it's really a given considering the hardware, this isn't a netbook designed to last, but more of a desktop replacement if you want to see it that way. I should note that this estimate is based on full out, bright screen, hardware pushing settings. Toshiba provides this laptop with an "eco mode" which can be turned on by a touch sensitive button...Read more›

ASUS N61JQ-A1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) Review

ASUS N61JQ-A1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just got this. Looked at it for a few days on [...] to get detailed specs and customer reviews before purchasing. I only bought it on amazon because the next day shipping was cheaper (about $[...]) and the computer itself was $[...] less on amazon.
Haven't pushed the pedal to the metal as far as ram, HDD, and CPU go. There is an overclocking speed (called Turbo Boost) that is automatic. With windows 7 (instaleld) the Turbo Boost app lets you see the CPU ramping up. It shows that the CPU rutinely goes up to 2.6 Ghz when opening an application (not very intensive work) so I am not sure how accurate the gadget is, but we'll see. When compared to what else is out there, this coputer has much more for your money and is actually cheaper than many laptops with less power/graphics capability/coolness. Look at the prices at Best Buy for an Core i3 laptop. They are nearly $1000 and don't have as much ram, video memory, or upgrade potential. This is a Core i7, much more powerful and is less than alot of the laptops out there. Plus, Asus has a 1 year accidental warranty. Tops!
Pros:
-Amazon said it would be Brown, mine was black when I got it. Brown is ugly anyway!
- You can create a recovery DVD to fix everything in the event you scrw something up. Also, has a bootup recovery option built in, so even if you don;t have the disks, it can be recovered.
- 1 year replacement/repair "i dropped it in a pool" warranty.
-Shipping. For the price of the computer, get the 30.00 next day. I order by 3:00PM on thursday and had the computer booted up at 3:15PM friday.
-Nice looking computer. Great sound. Great price. (You can get a lesser model without the i7 CPU from Best Buy for 999.00)
-USB 3.0 is nice touch. Cool touchpad with "gesture" recognition.
-I like the screen. The resolution is said to be a little low/poor for the machine, but I do not yet find it to be a problem. You can zoom in and out using the touchpad and gestureing, so if the icons look to big/small, you can change it up without messing with screen resolution. Basically, you can keep it in 1377x768 mode. HD screen looks good to me. Bright too.
-HDMI output! You can hook this thing up to your big ass HD flat screen.
- With Windows 7, some "gadgets" aka iphone style "apps" that can be installed to the desktop require 32bit. This computer has the 64bit Windows 7 so you have to do some playin around to get those gadgets to work. Pandora is one of those. However, you can have a applet for Pandor Radio on the desktop without needing an open internet explorer window. Cool!
- POwer saving one-touch button. NOt sure how effcient it is yet.
- So far, Windows 7 is not that bad. Yet. :)CONS:
- A lot of "bloatware" on this baby. You have to sort throught it all and see what you like/don;t like and uninstall whatever you can live without.
- At initial boot up, 80 processes running! Ouch. 33% of RAM in use. That's over a Gig. Trim down the fat and you should be good.
-The first time I launched the "See how cool this Asus computer is" demo, I needed to lower the volume. Whn I did so, the computer locked up, blaring a annoying sound. I had to hold th epower button for 4 sec to turn off manually. Not cool. After that though, all seems cool.
- The keyboard is a little cheap, has some play to it. Go to Best BUy and type on one of their floor models to see if it is bad for you or not. Not a deal breaker for me, but kinda lame. The "full size keyboard is not true, it is laptop sized with a number padd on the right. The arrow keys (if you play games or use spreadsheets) are small and you can easily miss them and hit the 0 or control key.
Cool!
- A lot of Asus "this and that" programs to deal with. I uninstalled half of them.
BOTTOM LINE:
Buy it. Remove what you don't like. Great deal. If you were going to spend 800, drop an extra 2 bills and get this one. If you were going to spend 1200, save you money and get yourself a case for this one once you buy it.

If I were a professor grading papers and if notebooks were research papers, the very first Envy 15 which debuted over a year ago definitely deserved a C+ grade. Imagine that the Envy 15 1st generation is a 5-8 page paper. A typical prof would give HP that very grade for good effort and creativity, but poor organization, sentence structure, and grammar and thus a rather low level of coherence altogether. The Envy 15 2nd Gen which came out less than a year after that corrected most of the infamous problems such as heating issues, creaky palmrests, and a jumpy touchpad. This refresh (or rewrite?) raised HP's grade to a B+. But while some may celebrate over a "most improved award," just as people tend to be more critical of a BMW 7-series than of your average, run-of-the-mill Corolla, the bar is set rather high for the luxury notebook segment that notebooks like the Envy and Macbook Pro fall into. Now onto the Envy 14. This time around, the grade for this notebook is rather controversial and definitely open to debate. The Envy 14 was released on June 27th. It was advertised as sporting HP's edge-to-edge 1600x900 Radiance Display which would afford the user better color reproduction and brightness than most if not all notebooks out there, yes, even better than the Macbook Pro's, ATI infin Without the (continually updating) Google touchpad software that can be found in the Trackpad Discussion thread of Notebookreview, this notebook IMO stays on the accursed borderline 89.5% which for many teachers can be a B+ grade or an A-. But with a 3rd party touchpad software written by a few good souls on notebookreview forums that leads to greatly improved two-finger scrolling, the Envy 14 gets a 93%. Just shy of A- but still in straight A territory. Toss in the Radiance display and you indeed get a potential top of the class paper not to mention another reason(with others to follow) for the professor to hand HP a letter of recommendation.NOTE: If anyone wants the Google software in question, go to notebook review forums (notebookreview.com), go to the HP section, and visit the HP Envy 14 Owners' lounge. The first page will have a link that takes you to the touchpad software lounge. Make an account and ask people to redirect you to the software because my goodness, you WILL want the drivers designed by reil for smooth 2-finger scroll! Ask someone there for reil's Google touchpad software. There's also a way to configure bottom left, bottom right and upper right as deadzones. I've configured the top right as right-click, the bottom left as go back a browser page, and the bottom right zone as go forward a browser page. Ask people on the Envy 14 notebook owners' lounge how to configure it!To HP: Great job. You not only get the most-improved award in my grade book. You get a 93%, which rounds up to an A. Not a strong A, mind you, but an A nonetheless. Keep up the good work, and work on those lingering issues. I expect to see great things from you in the future.
What I liked:
(1) Edge-to-edge screen. I don't mind for now that it's not genuine glass. Still have to admit the edge-to-edge black border gives the screen a nice look.
(2) Radiance Display - Bravo. Need I say more? If this screen isn't good enough for photographers, I don't know WHAT is!
(3) Keyboard - It's simply fantastic. It's a joy to type on. The LED backlit keyboard may not be bright as the Macbook Pro's, but it's still bright enough to use at night time when there's low or no light.
(4) Aesthetics - I've already drawn many glances with this notebook. Also to those who're concerned with how "fruity" the design looks, the laser etchings really grow on ya. The thin/light form factor and the laser-etched drawings really ooze of quality and refinement when you hold it.
(5) Specs - With the i5 processor and the ATI 5650, you can game on StarCraft 2 easily at medium settings. My suggestion is still to get a cooling pad as thin and light notebooks CAN get hot.A few critiques on areas which upon consideration and improvement will put the Envy 14 closer to A+ territory:
(1) Keep working on the touchpad software and install a real clickpad. Work with Synaptics on improving it so that we don't have to rely on the good will and charity of software coders in the NBR community. Improve 2-finger scroll and toss in inertial scrolling, 3-finger swipes, and 4-finger swipes.
(2) Consider doing away with the optical drive when the time is right. I understand some people need their DVD drive. That's fine. But in the future, if it'll shave off a lot of weight and allow for the installation of a 3rd fan, I'm willing to pay the usual $40 for an external optical drive. (Yes, it's true. The HP Envy 15 comes with 3 fans because the absence of an optical drive creates enough real estate for the 3rd fan)
(3) Backlit keyboard - This isn't really a criticism. But making the brightness adjustable would certainly tempt me to toss in another % point to your grade.
(4) Build Construction - I had an argument with the other "professors" over this. A tiny bit of keyboard flex which I myself barely noticed is fine for now. A little flex with an optical drive to boot is understandable. I gave you a high score in this area, but try to get rid of the flex. Until then, repeat after me: Perception. Matters. Take this from someone who worked several months at Subway serving some really particular customers!.
(5) Find a way to get rid of that God-awful CPU whine. I know this isn't HP-specific, but if HP could find a way to reduce the sound or get rid of completely, that would be a Godsend!************UPDATE FOR SEPTEMBER 9, 2010************
It's been about a month and a half since I first bought and started using the Envy 14. I have to say that two issues really bothered me:
(1) Synaptics engineers decided to be a bunch of lazy jerks by omitting the option to turn off the touchpad while typing. I mean, seriously? If you're going to specialize in something, the least you can do is do the job right!
(2) The screen touches the keyboard when closed. The interesting part is it doesn't leave behind any permanent scratches. It just leaves smudges. The first problem was easily solved by installing a third party software called "Paradisoft Touchpad Locker. Google it and you will find it. It is free and easy to install.
I've found that my touchpad problems have been reduced by at least 90% as a result of the software.

i've had this computer for more than a year and im very impressed with its performance. Its fast, quiet but it heats so much. the touch panel that includes volume control, play/pause/stop and wifi (on/off) stop working on the 10th month of use. that fact is irritating since i used a lot the touch panel to mute the computer sound and to turn off/on my wifi.
besides the touch panel situation the performance of the computer is amazing. i use it to run engineering swoftwares and never had any problems.

I've been able to configure it for my work. I use it every day. I'm running XP. The finger print scanner conflicts with some of my software. The audio out will skip sometimes. Other than that, everything is pretty good.

Yeah, I guess you could be upset that you didn't get some complimentary swag or whatever with this machine, but I didn't buy it for swag.
Let's get down to business, shall we?
Pluses: Gorgeous, smooth graphics in Star Trek Online, DDO, Champions Online and Team Fortress 2 with the sliders cranked just shy of the max. EAX sound is amazing: even sounds decent out of the built-in speakers (really rocks with my headphones though). CPU performance and multitasking is sweet and responsive. I have multi-surfed Word, Visual Studio and Photoshop CS with no lag or issues.
More ports than you can shake a stick at: plenty of USB, eSATA, FireWire (1394) and even HDMI (which outputs to full 1080p if that floats your boat). Bluetooth devices are easily paired. Amazing Windows 7 performance (rates a 5.9 Windows Experience out of the box, with 6.6s in graphics, before any tweaking)
This thing is a sweet PC for money.
Cons: Runs hot. Be sure to keep side vents for cooling free. Might be worth investing in a cooling mat for this bad boy. Also, can we please not pre-install a bunch of crap on our new, high-performance gaming machines? I had to uninstall a bunch of cheesey ASUS games and stuff before I could really get down to business.

ASUS N71JQ-X1 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
The reviews prior to this one say what a great laptop this is but that it lacked a Blu-Ray player. The description must have been off when most people first ordered this, and I would be upset if I had thought I was getting blu-ray player, but didn't. That being said, and I knew what I was getting. Let me be clear; this is an AMAZING value for what you're getting...even without Blu-Ray. Think about it; you're getting an Intel Core i7 laptop, with a 1GB ATI discrete graphics card, 17 inch, high def screen, and a 500GB hard-drive...oh and 4GB of Kingston RAM...all for under $1200 (as of this writing)? Are you kidding me?
I love this laptop, and I was a lifelong HP guy, until my screen died after 2 years of use...the build quality on this is incredible, the screen is beautiful, and as for Blu-Ray...meh. Everything's going disc-less digital anyway. A few years from now, and everything will be download only anyway.
Don't let the other reviews fool you, this is THE value in laptops, from one of the most well-decorated manufacturers of the last few years. Check out some sites on the net, do your research, and I'm sure you'll come to the same conclusion I did...this is the laptop to own.
Good luck and happy hunting.
ADDITIONAL INFO (Posted 3/22/2010) after using this laptop for the past few days, I can safely say that this was a great bargain. It's faster and more responsive than my previous HP that cost 3x as much. Also, it came with DDR3 1333 RAM instead of the advertised 1066. Nice little bonus. Point being, if you buy this laptop, I doubt you'd ever regret it.

I purchased this as a replacement for my (Asus ROG G73)as i needed a much smaller yet powerful laptop as I move around a lot overseas. I am very satisfied with it. The smaller form factor,USB 3.0 and dedicated video card is what sold me on this laptop.
Battery last a little over 2 hours when just surfing the web and chatting on low power settings.
Only 1 con for me and that is no backlit Keyboard but i knew that when i purchased it.
