ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 17-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black) Review

In short this computer is amazing. You wont find anything else under $2000 that can beat this. It comes with a standard 2 year warrant and 1 year accidental damage warranty plus a 30 day zero bright dot policy. The included mouse and bag are also great. So far I have been playing crysis and bad company 2(a great game for your new computer) on near full detail with amazing frames with the ati radean 5870(best single graphics card for laptops), 8gb of 1066mhz ram, and the new blazing fast core i7 processor. Although the computer is the size of some 18 inchers, I found that it looked and felt amazing. The whole back, palm rest area, and keys are rubberized which provides a great feel and grip. The keys are also back lit and the speakers on the computer are very loud and provide good audio The one thing I did not like about this computer was the touch pad buttons (not the touchpad its self which is great) are combined under a plastic cover which is really hard to press down on.
Pros:
Best for the price
Back lit keyboard
rubberized feels great
Best single graphics card ati 5870 with 1gb gddr5 ram
8gb of ram is more than enough
Great processor
Cool unique look
and i can just keep going on and on..
Cons:
Touch pad buttons I find hard to press down on
Number pad on keyboard feels squished
Overall 10/10
And as I said before this is the best!
Update after about 3 months
of use
I have already lost nearly all the rubber feet which do not seem attached well (medium problem). The keyboard has a lot of light bleeding through under the ` key (minor). And the worst problems i have experienced, my computer overheats! It shuts its self down randomly and i do not believe that the fan over the CPU is working (very major). I have sent it in for RMA with asus and will post an update later.
If i could change my rating I would give it 3.5-4 stars.

Toshiba Satellite M645-S4080 14.0-Inch LED Laptop ( Fusion X2 Finish in Charcoal)
Average Reviews:

pros
+ backlit keyboard
+ amazing speakers (like, best I've heard on a laptop, amazing (though my new xps 14 is at least equal to these)
+ circular scrolling is extremely effective
+ high resolution hdmi out
+ nice slot loading dvd drive
+ FN keys accessible from the screen with the mouse
+ boots very quickly if you enable it
cons
-extraordinarily loud fan
* fan turns on at a high power level even when laptop is idle
-keyboard keys occasionally (often) fail
-extremely limited viewing angles
Update: I've since purchased a dell xps 14, and It has the gt420m that this was originally advertised as having. Having tested both the 420 far outperforms the 330 in real-world testing.

I recently bought this laptop and it is just an amzing laptop with very good features and performance is mind-blowing...
The look is fantastic and has great design!
The processor is core i7 so its extremely fast.. It has 4 USB ports, webcam, microphone, HDMI, memory card reader etc..
Mouse touch-pad is also good as it has the style of Apple Mac book like, one can scroll or zoom with two fingers. so its very nice..
Internal features are very nice like backup, recovery, control panel features.
The most important thing is webcam. It has variety of features like zoom, auto-face detection, video recording, variety of effects, 3 to 10 images in one click etc etc..In addition, the microphone quality is also good with clear voice to opposite person chatting with us.
Also keyboard is very nice. Keys are widely separated and it has shortcut keys like internet explorer key, calculator, windows mail, and HP media smart.
Speakers are very nice as they are Altec-Lansing speakers.
In short, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants an amazing Laptop!

ASUS N61JQ-A1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) Review

ASUS N61JQ-A1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just got this. Looked at it for a few days on [...] to get detailed specs and customer reviews before purchasing. I only bought it on amazon because the next day shipping was cheaper (about $[...]) and the computer itself was $[...] less on amazon.
Haven't pushed the pedal to the metal as far as ram, HDD, and CPU go. There is an overclocking speed (called Turbo Boost) that is automatic. With windows 7 (instaleld) the Turbo Boost app lets you see the CPU ramping up. It shows that the CPU rutinely goes up to 2.6 Ghz when opening an application (not very intensive work) so I am not sure how accurate the gadget is, but we'll see. When compared to what else is out there, this coputer has much more for your money and is actually cheaper than many laptops with less power/graphics capability/coolness. Look at the prices at Best Buy for an Core i3 laptop. They are nearly $1000 and don't have as much ram, video memory, or upgrade potential. This is a Core i7, much more powerful and is less than alot of the laptops out there. Plus, Asus has a 1 year accidental warranty. Tops!
Pros:
-Amazon said it would be Brown, mine was black when I got it. Brown is ugly anyway!
- You can create a recovery DVD to fix everything in the event you scrw something up. Also, has a bootup recovery option built in, so even if you don;t have the disks, it can be recovered.
- 1 year replacement/repair "i dropped it in a pool" warranty.
-Shipping. For the price of the computer, get the 30.00 next day. I order by 3:00PM on thursday and had the computer booted up at 3:15PM friday.
-Nice looking computer. Great sound. Great price. (You can get a lesser model without the i7 CPU from Best Buy for 999.00)
-USB 3.0 is nice touch. Cool touchpad with "gesture" recognition.
-I like the screen. The resolution is said to be a little low/poor for the machine, but I do not yet find it to be a problem. You can zoom in and out using the touchpad and gestureing, so if the icons look to big/small, you can change it up without messing with screen resolution. Basically, you can keep it in 1377x768 mode. HD screen looks good to me. Bright too.
-HDMI output! You can hook this thing up to your big ass HD flat screen.
- With Windows 7, some "gadgets" aka iphone style "apps" that can be installed to the desktop require 32bit. This computer has the 64bit Windows 7 so you have to do some playin around to get those gadgets to work. Pandora is one of those. However, you can have a applet for Pandor Radio on the desktop without needing an open internet explorer window. Cool!
- POwer saving one-touch button. NOt sure how effcient it is yet.
- So far, Windows 7 is not that bad. Yet. :)CONS:
- A lot of "bloatware" on this baby. You have to sort throught it all and see what you like/don;t like and uninstall whatever you can live without.
- At initial boot up, 80 processes running! Ouch. 33% of RAM in use. That's over a Gig. Trim down the fat and you should be good.
-The first time I launched the "See how cool this Asus computer is" demo, I needed to lower the volume. Whn I did so, the computer locked up, blaring a annoying sound. I had to hold th epower button for 4 sec to turn off manually. Not cool. After that though, all seems cool.
- The keyboard is a little cheap, has some play to it. Go to Best BUy and type on one of their floor models to see if it is bad for you or not. Not a deal breaker for me, but kinda lame. The "full size keyboard is not true, it is laptop sized with a number padd on the right. The arrow keys (if you play games or use spreadsheets) are small and you can easily miss them and hit the 0 or control key.
Cool!
- A lot of Asus "this and that" programs to deal with. I uninstalled half of them.
BOTTOM LINE:
Buy it. Remove what you don't like. Great deal. If you were going to spend 800, drop an extra 2 bills and get this one. If you were going to spend 1200, save you money and get yourself a case for this one once you buy it.

MSI GT725-074US 17-Inch Laptop Review

MSI GT725-074US 17-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this laptop for a couple of weeks now, and I can only say that it is honestly the best laptop I have ever owned. I have owned several before - including some Apple iBooks - but I can see myself using this laptop as my only and main computer for quite some time.
The video card is superb, and every game that I have played through it: Runes of Magic, TF2 - and they both run at the highest setting, with everything maxed. This laptop blows away my desktop - and it's large enough to replace the desktop and be your main rig.
This laptop is huge, and for some that might be a low point - if so, you probably are not in the market for a laptop like this anyways. This laptop put performance and functionality over portability. You should also be aware, the battery does not sit flush with the back, it has about a 1 inch lip that protrudes from the back.
Some positive of this laptop are:
1. Beautiful huge screen that shows vibrant colors and contrast
2. Full keyboard (and numberpad)
3. Plethora of ports: SD/MMC, USB 2.0, IE1394, Esata, HDMI!
4. Great speakers for a laptop
5. Very fast performance
6. The ability to play just about any game on the market now
7. Good power management tools
8. Comes with a good backpack to carry it in.
Some areas that people may not like are:
1. Vista 32 bit is installed - NOT 64 bit like we would all like
2. Protruding battery
3. Right side shift key is very small to make room for keypad
4. Heavy!
I'm very happy with this laptop and would recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a large, big screened laptop that will play games decently. If you are a hardcore FPS fan and need the hotest thing out, look towards Asus' new SLi laptop. You will play around $1,000 more then this one though.

The MSI GT725-074US notebook PC features an enormous 17-inch LCD monitor for your viewing pleasure, providing the ultimate in realism whether you are playing games or watching a DVD. It's also equipped with the ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphic card (built-in 512 MB VRAM), exclusive MSI vivid image enhancement technology, and the latest Intel Centrino 2 processor. MSI's exclusive Turbo Drive Engine Technology allows you to overclock the GT725 (while in AC power mode) with just a touch of the turbo button located above the keyboard. And the unique ECO Engine power management function helps extend the battery running time while performing different tasks, and you can easily switch between five different modes--Gaming, Movie, Presentation, Office, and Turbo Battery (minimizing battery power consumption).
The GT725's body is surrounded by MSI's flame design, symbolizing the essence of speed. MSI has also selected aluminum as the base for the exterior and added metallic thread accents to the cover, giving it an outstanding sense of fashion. It includes MSI's aerodynamic touchpad design with a simple black mirror plate to accentuate its slickness.
This gaming/multimedia laptop is equipped with the theater-class bass speakers and four track audio recognized by Dolby Surround Sound. The bass speakers can provide the most realistic audio, and the speakers feature a metallic polishing process that accentuate the futuristic styling of the 3D speaker pores. Additionally, the embedded high performance subwoofer's design at the bottom of the computer can create shocking low-end effects.
It's powered by the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor--with Centrino 2 technology--which boosts speed, reduces power requirements, and saves on battery life. The 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 includes a quick 1066 MHz front-side bus and 3 MB of L2 cache, providing an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved multimedia and multitasking performance.
Other features include a 320 GB hard drive (with fast 7200 RPM speed), 4 GB of installed RAM (maximum capacity), DVD±RW drive (which also burns CDs), Draft-N Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g/n), Gigabit Ethernet, 2-megapixel webcam for video chatting, an eSATA/USB combo port, Dolby Digital Live surround sound via two integrated speakers, multi-format memory card reader, and pre-installed Windows Vista Home Premium operating system.
The Basics
Processor: Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 45nm Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 processor featuring Intel Centrino 2 technology. This processor has a 2.4 GHz processor speed, super-sized 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a extra-large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
Formerly codenamed Montevina, Intel Centrino 2 processor technology improves upon every facet of a laptop's main features, including performance and battery life via new processors and chipsets, faster draft 802.11n wireless, and new business-class manageability capabilities. The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet.
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and it can run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background.

Hard Drive: The large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (with a fast 7200 RPM speed--usually found in desktops) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC6400, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity of this notebook, and it also offers an ultra-fast 800 MHz speed.

DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD±R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 104-key keyboard--with 10-keypad on the side--and electro-static two-button touchpad.
Screen, Video & Audio This notebook has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels (native 720p for high-definition viewing) and a 16:10 aspect ratio. MSI's exclusive VIVID LCD technology is able to display signals for a better richness in colors, and you can even detect in the presence of the finest details. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, which provides 512 MB dedicated graphics memory and up to 3579 MB as allocated by the Windows Vista operating system. ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series GPUs bring the power of graphics "supercomputing" to gamers, setting a new standard for visual computing. With up to 1.2 teraFLOPS on tap, the TeraScale graphics engine delivers an immersive, cinematic gaming experience. Enhanced anti-aliasing (AA) and anisotropic filtering create striking graphics with unparalleled realism so you can max out the settings of the most demanding next-generation games or revitalize your favorite titles. You'll also be able to watch Blu-ray movies and play HD content with incredible visual fidelity and take your experience to another level with new multimedia capabilities. Sophisticated new features within ATI Avivo HD technology give you the freedom and flexibility to edit videos quickly and convert them to H.264 and MPEG-2 formats 1.8x faster than real-time.
This laptop also has an integrated Intel High Definition Audio card with Dolby Digital Live, which provides real-time encoding technology that converts any audio signal into a Dolby Digital bitstream for transport and playback through a home theater system. It provides Dolby Digital (5.1-channel surround sound) during movie playback and gameplay, immersing players in high-quality surround sound that puts them at the center of the action
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 5100AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). The Bluetooth connectivity (version 2.1 + EDR) enables you to communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones.
It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard card slot (though no PCMCIA card slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features.
It comes with an HDMI video output, which extends full 1080p support to HD displays as well as provides uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable. Here's the full list of connection options:
3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (including 1 eSATA/USB combo port)
1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
1 ExpressCard slot
Digital video out: HDMI
Analog video out: VGA
1 headphone jack
1 microphone jack
RJ-45 port for 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection
56K modem port (V.90)
4-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO)

Operating System Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 17.0-Inch Laptop Review

Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 17.0-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this laptop for a while now and have loved it every minute I've had it.
Pros - The Dual graphics cards, the processor speed, 4 GB RAM, good display and very good overall machine everything works well together. Laptops of equal capabilities cost significantly more.
Cons - Weight, Battery life, finger print magnet, lack of choice on colors (even just a black color alternative would suffice)
Notes on buying from Amazon.com - I got the laptop from Amazon for a cheaper price then anywhere else I found it. The delivery was right on-time and the packaging was done very well to protect the product. I was hesitant to order such an expensive electronic device from an online third party distributor but was very impressed with how it was handled and the quality of the product. Graphics -
The dual video cards running with just over 1g dedicated memory really make my games run smooth. I haven't experienced any lag in my online gaming since I started playing them with this laptop.
Processor -
The dual processor at 2.26GHz and 4G RAM are very efficient at handling anything I've tried to run on it so far, and believe me I've tried to push it.
Note: you must load 64bit Vista version or it can only use 3Gb of the ram.
Display -
The screen is beautiful, it displays colors without any odd shadow spots or fuzzy areas on the edges. The only downside I've seen with the screen is on the default resolution settings without perfect vision some text can be a little difficult to read without moving your eyes closer then arms length.
Hard Drive -
The 320Gb HDD is ample space for a laptop.
Optical Drives -
The drive loads anything you put it in very quickly and quietly. I have not had the opportunity to test out the DVD LabelFlash, but it was just a weird addition to this laptop and I don't see myself using it much if at all.
Bluetooth -
The Bluetooth links up quickly and doesn't fluctuate, I use a bluetooth mouse and it feels more precise then my Razor Diamondback I use on my tower.
Webcam/internal microphone -
The webcam is extremely clear and everyone I have used it with say that it does not jump or static at all even with fast or jerky movements in front of the camera. The microphone is pretty good, sometimes I'm told I sound distant. It is very good about canceling out sounds coming from the laptop. I still prefer my headset over this mic however, it just isn't quite as clear as a headset.
Media buttons -
The touch buttons at the top of the keyboard are a little odd to me, I try to keep my hands away from the top of the keyboard because they are so sensitive to any touch.
Sound -
The four main speakers and the subwoofer are great, I don't know why they put the subwoofer on a laptop but it does add a nice feel to a game when you've got it in your lap.
Battery/ AC Adaptor -
The AC adaptor is a massive 5Ibl brick, but considering what it's powering that isn't too surprising. The battery in this laptop is nearly worthless, you can adjust the settings as to what is actually running when you switch to battery power, but this still will only get you thirty to forty-five minutes of power. I only use the battery if I am switching rooms or plugs. If your battery dies while you're running your laptop it switches to what Toshiba called lockup mode, you have to plug the AC adapter in get a good 15-20 minutes charge on the battery. Then remove the AC and battery for 1 minute reseat the battery do not plug the AC in and power it up to get it out of Lockup mode. Annoying, but supposedly it protects your system from negative side-effects of loosing power while running. Something else of note, The back side on the bottom gets VERY HOT very quickly, make sure you have good airflow or a cooler pad.
Software -
I've barely found any use for the preloaded software, The Speech system is useless without training yourself to speak abnormally. The Norton and Office trials are full access trials which is nice, but ultimately useless after 60 days. The full version of Microsoft works is also very pointless unless your just using it for personal stuff, most professors or businesses wont except MSworks formatted documents. I haven't had a chance to test out the Face recognition, Disc Creator and Ulead DVD movie factory.
Weight/Size -
This is a beast of a machine, though it is a laptop you almost can't treat it as such. It weighs 15.09Ibs which is very heavy for a laptop. It also is extremely large on most of its dimensions. It is a 17" screen but when it is closed there is an additional 1/2" of computer in front of the screen, so it is too big for 90% of all laptop bags that would hold a 17" laptop. It is also 2.5" plus feet on the back side which is too thick for most pouches that laptop bags use to hold the laptop in place.
Design/Colors -
The only color this laptop comes in is flashy, if you like that kind of thing it works. If you don't you don't have any other options. The keyboard is overly shiny, it shows every single fingerprint and after an hour of working on an essay my keyboard looked five years old and gritty till I polished it over with a lentfree cloth. The touchpad uses a heavy duty surface, but this causes it not to register your movements all the time, sometimes you'll slide your finger across and the mouse will stop moving for a second halfway across the screen. Not a big issue but annoying when it stops just short of what you're trying to get to. It also does not have a scroll pad or wheel which is just an inconvenience. I have taken to only ever using my external mouse. The display screen is also a finger print magnet. I don't recall ever touching my screen, I use the edges of the monitor to open and close it, yet there are prints on the screen in many places.

Powerfully styled and equally packed with powerful computing resources and video processing, the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q711 is engineered to deliver unparalleled performance to gamers and multimedia enthusiasts. Featuring Toshiba's trademark "fiery" Fusion finish with Rogue design, it pairs one of the latest Intel Centrino 2 processors with NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX graphics featuring NVIDIA SLi technology, 1 GB of GDDR3 discrete graphics and up to 2303 MB of shared memory when using the included 64-bit version of the Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. To raise the performance bar even further, this Qosmio also combines a 64 GB NAND solid state flash drive--which delivers faster access times and data transfer rates--with a 7200 RPM 320 GB SATA hard disk drive.
Enjoy all the in-your-face realism of today's hottest 3D games with the 17-inch high-definition screen with a 1680 x 1050 (WSXGA+) resolution and amazing brightness, contrast, color saturation and overall image quality. And you'll get crisp, immersive audio from four high-fidelity stereo speakers--and one very powerful sub-woofer.
It's powered by the latest Intel Core 2 Quad processor--with four processing cores and Centrino 2 technology--which boosts speed, reduces power requirements, and saves on battery life. The 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 includes a quick 1066 MHz front-side bus and 6 MB of L2 cache, providing an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved multimedia and multitasking performance.
Other features include 4 GB of RAM (maximum capacity), Draft-N Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g/n), Bluetooth connectivity, HDMI video output, S/PDIF digital audio output for 5.1-channel surround sound, dual-label DVD drive with Labelflash printing (also burns CDs), webcam and microphone mounted on display bezel, and multi-format memory card reader. Additionally, this Toshiba notebook is RoHS-compatible, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances.
The Basics
Processor: With four execution cores, the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9000 blows through processor-intensive tasks in demanding multitasking environments and makes the most of highly threaded applications. Part of Intel's "Penryn" line of 45nm processors, it features new hafnium-infused circuitry to reduce electrical current leakage in transistors and help this desktop run cooler. It also features Intel Trusted Execution Technology, which provides hardware-based mechanisms that help protect against software-based attacks and protects the confidentiality and integrity of data stored or created on the client PC.
Whether you're creating multimedia, annihilating your gaming enemies, or running compute-intensive applications at one time, new quad-core processing will change the way you do everything. The Q9000 has an ultra-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 6 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
You get four dedicated, physical threads help operating systems and applications deliver additional performance that enhance multi-tasking and multi-threaded performance across many types of applications and work loads. The Smart Memory Access feature improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed. The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications. And with the Intel 64 Architecture, the processor can access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel 64 Architecture can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory.

Hard Drive: This Qosmio laptop comes with dual storage drives--a 64 GB solid-state NAND flash drive and a 320 GB SATA hard disk drive (with a 7200 RPM speed, which is usually found in desktops). Free of moving parts, your solid state drive is designed to last longer than a conventional spinning hard drive. And solid state drives are almost two times faster than conventional drives. You can load an entire game onto the solid state drive, then sit back and enjoy the fun with no gaps in the action.
This SATA hard disk drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC3-8500, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity of this notebook, and it also offers an ultra-fast 1066 MHz speed.

DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer Labelflash DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD±R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 6x for both DVD±R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
With the Labelflash functionality, you can burn high-resolution, high-contrast pictures on the label side of DVD discs using the same laser used for data recording. Enjoy transparency and high-quality not found in traditional printable media. All you need is a Labelflash DVD disc to start labeling without a printer.

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 104-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio When it comes to full-on entertainment and gaming, this Qosmio laptop is unmatched with its widescreen 17-inch TruBrite display, which not only delivers stunning visuals but also provides the best viewing for widescreen movies with its native 1680 x 1050 resolution. The TruBrite technology helps make images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature.
Delivering optimized performance for immersive gaming on-the-go, the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTX graphics card powers the Qosmio's video, providing 1 GB of GDDR3 dedicated video memory. (GDDR3, short for Graphics Double Data Rate, version 3, is a graphics card-specific memory technology that's better able to deliver fluid frame rates for even the most advanced games and applications.) It also offers up to 1791 MB of dynamically allocated shared graphics memory using Nvidia's TurboCache technology, and up to 2303 MB when using the 64-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10it lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications. Experience real-time photo editing, or immerse yourself in the most complex, true-to-life gaming environments.
Nvidia Hybrid SLI technology delivers multi-GPU benefits when an Nvidia motherboard GPU is combined with an NVIDIA discrete GPU. With GeForce 9700M, the essential benefit of this technology is the ability to extend the life of your battery considerably with HybridPower. HybridPower technology is a key feature of Hybrid SLI, allowing you to unleash graphics performance when you need it, or instantly switch gears to a lower power mode from the motherboard GPU for longer battery life and quieter operation. This reduces system power consumption dramatically and extends battery life up to 40 percent longer.
It also features four stylishly incorporated Harman Kardon stereo speakers with a built-in subwoofer.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This notebook has an integrated tri-mode Atheros wireless LAN (802.11b/g/n). Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots. The Bluetooth connectivity (version 2.1 + EDR) enables you to communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones.
With USB Sleep-and-Charge support, you can use your Toshiba laptop to charge your favorite portable electronic devices, even when the laptop is asleep. If you use a smartphone, you can just plug it in, power up and go without having to worry that you've got enough charge. This laptop is also Wireless USB ready. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (though no PCMCIA card slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features.
It comes with an HDMI video output, which extends full 1080p support to HD displays as well as provides uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable. Here's the full list of connection options:
4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (including 1 eSATA/USB combo port)

Toshiba Satellite L675D-S7016 17.3-Inch Laptop (Fusion Finish in Helios Grey)
Average Reviews:

I purchased this item from another place other than Amazon. It is a replacement for the previous laptop I owned. This is a good student computer, it runs fast, has a good clear picture, holds a charge well for a large screen. It would not be a good gaming computer. The drawback I have with it is that it only has 2 USB ports and I had to purchase an extra USB that will allow me to charge my iPhone, plug in my mouse receiver, and plug in my jump drive all at the same time.
This computer is amazingly lightweight for its size and has a thin profile. Overall it is a good computer that is fairly portable for the student on the go.

Average Reviews:

Yeah, I guess you could be upset that you didn't get some complimentary swag or whatever with this machine, but I didn't buy it for swag.
Let's get down to business, shall we?
Pluses: Gorgeous, smooth graphics in Star Trek Online, DDO, Champions Online and Team Fortress 2 with the sliders cranked just shy of the max. EAX sound is amazing: even sounds decent out of the built-in speakers (really rocks with my headphones though). CPU performance and multitasking is sweet and responsive. I have multi-surfed Word, Visual Studio and Photoshop CS with no lag or issues.
More ports than you can shake a stick at: plenty of USB, eSATA, FireWire (1394) and even HDMI (which outputs to full 1080p if that floats your boat). Bluetooth devices are easily paired. Amazing Windows 7 performance (rates a 5.9 Windows Experience out of the box, with 6.6s in graphics, before any tweaking)
This thing is a sweet PC for money.
Cons: Runs hot. Be sure to keep side vents for cooling free. Might be worth investing in a cooling mat for this bad boy. Also, can we please not pre-install a bunch of crap on our new, high-performance gaming machines? I had to uninstall a bunch of cheesey ASUS games and stuff before I could really get down to business.

ASUS N71JQ-X1 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
The reviews prior to this one say what a great laptop this is but that it lacked a Blu-Ray player. The description must have been off when most people first ordered this, and I would be upset if I had thought I was getting blu-ray player, but didn't. That being said, and I knew what I was getting. Let me be clear; this is an AMAZING value for what you're getting...even without Blu-Ray. Think about it; you're getting an Intel Core i7 laptop, with a 1GB ATI discrete graphics card, 17 inch, high def screen, and a 500GB hard-drive...oh and 4GB of Kingston RAM...all for under $1200 (as of this writing)? Are you kidding me?
I love this laptop, and I was a lifelong HP guy, until my screen died after 2 years of use...the build quality on this is incredible, the screen is beautiful, and as for Blu-Ray...meh. Everything's going disc-less digital anyway. A few years from now, and everything will be download only anyway.
Don't let the other reviews fool you, this is THE value in laptops, from one of the most well-decorated manufacturers of the last few years. Check out some sites on the net, do your research, and I'm sure you'll come to the same conclusion I did...this is the laptop to own.
Good luck and happy hunting.
ADDITIONAL INFO (Posted 3/22/2010) after using this laptop for the past few days, I can safely say that this was a great bargain. It's faster and more responsive than my previous HP that cost 3x as much. Also, it came with DDR3 1333 RAM instead of the advertised 1066. Nice little bonus. Point being, if you buy this laptop, I doubt you'd ever regret it.

HP Pavilion dv7-4280us 17.3-Inch Entertainment Notebook PC (Silver) Review

HP Pavilion dv7-4280us 17.3-Inch Entertainment Notebook PC (Silver)

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this computer for about 3 weeks now, and am quite happy with its performance and battery life. It has switchable graphics and automatically (unless disabled) switches between built-in graphics when battery powered and dedicated graphics (ATI HD6550) when wall cube powered. I don't use this computer for gaming, but the HD6550 is a fairly respectable card. Battery life is listed at 7.75 hours. I was originally seeing around 6 hours in my typical usage scenario (see note re change below). I am also pleased with its thermal management. When working hard it gets warm - but not hot. Air exhaust is on the left, toward the back of the case, which is an acceptable location. Since it is billed as an "entertainment" laptop, there is a goodly amount of HP software installed for managing audio, video, photos, etc. I thought I would remove most of this, but found it to be relatively inoffensive and even useful at times. The hard drive is a generous 750 GB, so I wasn't too concerned about needing to free up space. I did disable the built-in backup management software in favor of adding a second 750 GB hard drive (this required purchasing an HP4000 series drive caddy and cable). I made the new drive (7200 RPM) the primary drive and relegated the slower 5400 RPM drive that came with the 4280 to backup. Having two hard drives did, of course, reduce battery life somewhat, but I still get around 5.5 hours - not bad at all. I can now do backups in-situ via partition imaging, plus daily backups to an external USB drive. Regarding that - the HP4280 has a powered eSATA port (combo USB and eSATA), which I use with a Seagate GoFlex Pro 750 GB drive with eSATA interface - and it is fast (GoFlex pro uses 7200 RPM drive which matches the one I swapped in and made my boot drive).
There is also a fingerprint scanner which can be used to log in (password entry is still available as alternative). You have to spend a few minutes registering your fingerprint (plus one alternative print) - but after that, you can log in by just swiping your finger over the scanner. It took some getting used to, but I now log in this way almost exclusively. One little trick I found - place your finger over the scanner, then hesitate for just a bit (about 1/4 to 1/2 second) before swiping and it will read much more reliably. At least that's the case for me - maybe I "trained" it that way. ;-)
My only real complaint is that the touch pad implementation is - well, just awful. As has been noted by others, it's almost impossible to position the cursor and click to select without moving the cursor off target, and if you touch the case near the touch pad - that moves the cursor. Really annoying. I added a Logitech M705 mouse which uses their tiny unifying receiver (I leave it plugged in all the time), and it works quite well, even with the receiver on the opposite side of the computer (that location works best for my carry case).
One last note - this beasty has a blue ray player and Beats audio - very nice combo for watching HD movies.
Overall, I am very happy with this computer. It lost one star for the schizoid touch pad and the slow hard drive.
Update 2011-05-10. Recently updated Synaptic Pointing Device drivers, and there were definite improvements in touch pad operation.

ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black) Review

ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just received this laptop. It does NOT come with a backpack or a mouse (it was written that backpack and mouse are included in G73SW-XA1 on Amazon's product page, but this text was later removed). :-(
The material quality is great. Feels sturdy. Quite heavy, as expected.
Screen is glossy and has 1920*1080 resolution.
Windows experience index details are:
Processor - 7.4
RAM - 7.6
Graphics - 7.0
Gaming graphics - 7.0
Primary hard disk - 5.9
Computer has 8GB of 1333Mhz RAM (4x 2GB), so it'll be expensive to upgrade RAM to 12GB(2*2 + 4*2) or 16GB(4*4) (since there are no extra free slots and you'll have to throw away existing RAM).
There is an empty 2.5" HDD compartment where I'm planning to install OCZ Technology 120 GB Vertex 2 Series SATA II 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G (I like the 750GB HDD + 120GB SSD configuration better than 500GB HDD + 500GB HDD).
Hard disk comes partitioned 174GB in C:\ and 502GB in D:\. Lots of stuff that I had to deinstall. The disk is Seagate ST9750420AS.
DVD writer drive is Matshita UJ8A0ASW (supports burning to Dual Layer 8.5GB DVD+R DL). WiFi is Atheros AR9285. Bluetooth is Broadcom BT-270.
For those of you who have heard about the Intel Sandy Bridge problem - yes, it does have "New revision. Certified design" sticker.
Also has "NVidia 3DTVPLAY" sticker, so it should be possible to connect laptop to a 3D-capable TV or projector via HDMI.
Overall, I highly recommend this laptop.

HP ENVY 17-1011NR 17.3-Inch Laptop Review

HP ENVY 17-1011NR 17.3-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

At the end of the day performance is the most important measure of success to me and this machine lives up to expectations here - its definately snappy. In regards to games, I've installed Dragon Age, Borderlands, Crysis - all run great at maximum settings. I'm confident this machine will handle my gaming needs for the next couple of years.
Nice fit and finish. Lots of metal bits and overall solid feel. Its not exactly light but for a 17" its respectable. It looks good enough to leave out when company is over. I had some concern buying site unseen because I know the previous envy models didn't quite deliver in this are - but I think overall this version meets the bar. Its not a mac book - but it gets pretty close.
Battery life has been good so far - the extra 9 volt battery is an awesome bonus.
It does have a blu ray drive.
The screen is beautiful - super clear, detailed and bright.
So in the two primary areas that drove me to purchase this vs. other 17" gaming machines - performance and aesthetic - this machine delivers.
I have a few usability complaints though..
The mouse pad. The problem here is that the click buttons are also part of the touch bad - so when go to click on things your clicking finger will move the cursor. This happens often enough to be very frustrating.. maybe a patch will come out that will address. In the meantime I've been having to plug in an external mouse because I can't take it.
The PC does something strange when it sleeps - when you open the lid it will resume but the screen doesn't come back so you have to open and close the lid once again and that will make the screen turn on. Not a big deal but a bug that bothers me. And the lid is a bit of pain to open - no real place to get a good grip and its tight and heavy. Its more like prying it open rather than the nice smooth lid opening experience of the mac book.
Too much cluttering software pre installed and Windows disk not included making a clean install difficult.
The Beats audio is not that exciting - but i didn't expect it to be. Sounds like a laptop to me at the end of the day.

Ok, this is the fastest laptop I have ever owned. I actually bought the one with the p7450 2.13GHz, but I upgraded to the P8700 myself. I bought a Refurbished Asus G50VT.
With Vista on it is ok, but with Windows 7 on it its awesome. It can play Far Cry 2 and Call Of Duty MW2 on the highest settings. When playing these games, the video card got to 86C after an hour. My frame rate was in the High 20s mid 30s on the highest settings. The hottest the CPU ever got was 72C. Before I upgraded the CPU, it would idle at in the mid 30s(C). After I upgraded it and used Antec Formula 5 it now idles at 27-29C. The GPU idles at 42C and gets to around 50-55 while surfing the net or watching a video. This laptop runs cool compared to other laptops.
Some people have asked if it can handle 8GB of ram. After little research I found that it can take up to 8GB of memory. 8GB (2x4GB) on eBay costs about $240. Now for battery life.
On power save with the screen on the dimmest I get about 3-3.5 hours of life. Some people think that the light and design on the lid look bad, but I think it looks cool. I just wish that you could turn them off sometimes. Hard drive transfers at about 22 MBPS with Windows 7.
Overall its an excellent laptop. I paid $700 for mine on eBay. 5 Star Laptop!
Pros:
Fast Processor
Good Video Card
Big HDD
Long Battery Life
Fast Wireless Card
Excellent frame rates in latest games
Runs very cool
Cons
Lid Design looks bad to some
Screen slightly low resolution
Can't put a quad core in it

I have been looking at this item for quite a while and finally pulled the trigger. My concerns with the speed of the processor on the Core 2 rather than i5 and i7 and the high price were my only reason not to buy. After reading about the battery hit taken on this with the faster processors and the price dropping about $100 so that the price difference with the i7 become quite large, I decided to go with the Core 2 and I am glad I did.
First off, the screen is glossy and only of average brightness but the viewing angles and the ability to turn the contrast all the way up and still see a good picture a plus. Second, there is no bluetooth but there are so many tiny dongles these days it isn't a huge issue for your mouse or headphones - just use of one the three usb ports. Third, the reason to buy this is for gaming and I am happy to say I was able to load all my games on the spacious 320gb hard drive with room to spare and they are all playable anywhere from medium to ultra settings. I play almost exclusively real-time strategy titles such as StarCraft II and the Command and Conquer titles. They all run really good.
The build quality is phenomenal on this thing. It is fun to just look at and admire. Being able to change the lighting in five zones and in various ways makes night computing perfect. The small keyboard is a little tougher to type on than a chic-lit style on a netbook but the razor sharp backlighting makes it work out fine after a little practice. Touch typing works great. The wrist area does not show fingerprints, the mouse has a great texture and really soft press buttons but I use an external mouse.
My first unit did not work the second day. It went black screen on me and Amazon shipped me a replacement the very next day that has been perfect. I also went into the bios on the second one and enabled turbo mode and it works - no blue screens.
I spent all day loading up my gaming titles and look forward to playing on the go and around the house a lot more now. I was also pleased that 1080p YouTube worked flawlessly and my programs seem snappy. So far, so good, enjoying it. The kids love it too and like to change the keyboard to pink for the girls and incredible hulk green for the boys.
A fun toy, I hope to enjoy for a long time, and recommend.

I got this computed in December 2008 to replace and HP Pavilion that had major problems and was stuck in HP customer service repair limbo with me sending it back and forth to the service center. The HP lasted 14 months and had better features but when it overheated apparently due to a defective Nvidia graphics card that is in present in thousands of units of many laptop manufacturers. One day in October 2008, the thing literally stopped functioning and required major repair work just to boot up properly. Not wanting to waste anymore time with HP, I opted for a Dell XPS 1530. The problems with this laptop are many and the HP had better features such as better response with the touchpad and also DVD ROM drive that played any disc even poorly recorded DVD-Rs. I've had many problems with my Dell's DVD Rom drive and it even scratched a few of the regular DVD's I've tried playing.
Last month, the Hard Drive had a major failure and required to be remounted. Dell Customer Service sent me a new hard drive within a week, but it was only 100 gig replacement. The original hard drive was much bigger than this and now I have a computer that is already running low on disk space. I'm not sure how long this machine will last and given the history of Dells that I've used in the past 5 years, every computer (whether desktop or laptop) always has a major problem every 12 months or so. It is like servicing a 4-year old car, but it isn't even a year old. And this how they make all their profits selling warranties and charging for extra repair work for the cheap aftermarket components that they install in these expensive laptops.
Other negatives about this laptop include sticking keys that sometimes won't work correctly until you press on them firmly. The dashboard on the laptop is not very responsive, mainly the volume control as you tap on it multiple times and it still won't respond sometimes. The DVD playback while working initially, didn't function and started to suddenly scratch my DVD's and so I stopped using it. The keyboard is also feel somewhat cramped and the touchpad is smaller than my previous HP and less responsive. This model of laptop also has been commonly known to overheat and I have measured the temperature using a 3rd party program and found it hitting some strangely high temperatures. This apparently is an issue with the Nvidia card and it apparently shares the same model (GeForce 8400 GS) as my old HP.
The few positives about this laptop include the fact is doesn't weigh a lot when carrying it. And it performs faster than standard Dells such as the Latitude line which take a lot of time doing basic functions such as multitasking with spreadsheets and Email. I would recommend this laptop to anyone who is doing very basic tasks for school, word processing or work related activities that don't require massive amounts of memory to complete. Be sure you have an external hard drive to back up you're data and purchase an extended 2-3 year warranty. It will literally stop working within a year.
