Intel DP55KG Extreme Series Desktop Motherboard (P55 ATX Core i7 Core i5 LGA1156) Review

Intel DP55KG Extreme Series Desktop Motherboard (P55 ATX Core i7 Core i5 LGA1156)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I decided to build a computer after a 10 year hiatus.
SPECS:
I chose this motherboard, 4gb (2x2g)Corsair XMS 3 1600mhz ram,the new unlocked Intel i-875K processor cooled by a Corsair Hydro H50. Also went with Ultra X4 750 watt modular Power Supply, Hitachi 1gb 7200rpm Sata HD, Lite-On 24x DVD+RW, the LEXA S Case, and the EVGA GTX480 video card, and Asus XONAR Essence ST Soundcard. I have a 30 inch Dell 3008WFP Monitor, Apple Blue-tooth Wireless Keyboard and Logitech Performance Mouse MX to complete out my build. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64bit 1 user OEM.
INSTALL:
It took me most of a Friday night to get this built. Mostly because the back plate of the Cooler doesn't fit correctly, I had to live with some bow in the back plate to get the 4th screw in. But all and all not too bad. It booted fine the first time. I didn't realize you can't use a Blue-tooth Keyboard at first so I had to grab an older cordless usb Microsoft one to actually set up Windows. The motherboard lined us great with my case and the SATA Cables and many of the other cables were able to route behind the motherboard through rubberized holes in the case. I had no issues installing the motherboard at all, just fine, and well laid out to plug in 4 fans, a water cooler, sata plugs, case front panel wires, power wires, etc. A+++
PERFORMANCE:
I didn't know how to overclock anymore after 10 years. So I read some stuff googling and wasn't sure and instead just used the Intel Desktop Control Panel to experiment. I ended up setting the Ram to 1600mhz and only changing the multiplier to 29x in quad config, 30 in three, and 31 in 2 and single core. I get a score of about 9,000 on CPU Mark. That was all I needed to do, no changing voltages or any of the rest of it. That is what worked best and has run cool and solid ever since.
FEATURES:
The blue-tooth doesn't work for my Apple keyboard, it recognizes it, lets you type in the code but loses connection, so I use a small usb dongle instead. The Video Card sits fine. There is some bling you can turn on in the bios for lights and a blue skull with glowing red eyes. I turned it on high since I have a case window. The real feature is the Intel Control Panel. It shows temps, overclock settings and fan speeds and lets you save profiles. That is a great feature and now that I am done overclocking, I don't use the bios anymore. I also downloaded the latest drivers and firmware from Intel. Paired with the Asus Soundcard (got because of the powerful headphone amp built in) I just use Grado SR-80 and Sennheiser RS140 wireless headphones and a set of Altec Lansing FX6021 speakers.
FINAL IMPRESSION: For me this was a good jump back in to building my own computer. I wasn't satisfied with anything pre-built that I could afford. Building my own let me spend in the areas I valued. The Intel Board was a great choice because it runs well and is very expandable with a second or even third video card and lots of SATA and USB Ports. Get one!

ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 17-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black) Review

ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 17-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)

In short this computer is amazing. You wont find anything else under $2000 that can beat this. It comes with a standard 2 year warrant and 1 year accidental damage warranty plus a 30 day zero bright dot policy. The included mouse and bag are also great. So far I have been playing crysis and bad company 2(a great game for your new computer) on near full detail with amazing frames with the ati radean 5870(best single graphics card for laptops), 8gb of 1066mhz ram, and the new blazing fast core i7 processor. Although the computer is the size of some 18 inchers, I found that it looked and felt amazing. The whole back, palm rest area, and keys are rubberized which provides a great feel and grip. The keys are also back lit and the speakers on the computer are very loud and provide good audio The one thing I did not like about this computer was the touch pad buttons (not the touchpad its self which is great) are combined under a plastic cover which is really hard to press down on.
Pros:
Best for the price
Back lit keyboard
rubberized feels great
Best single graphics card ati 5870 with 1gb gddr5 ram
8gb of ram is more than enough
Great processor
Cool unique look
and i can just keep going on and on..
Cons:
Touch pad buttons I find hard to press down on
Number pad on keyboard feels squished
Overall 10/10
And as I said before this is the best!
Update after about 3 months
of use
I have already lost nearly all the rubber feet which do not seem attached well (medium problem). The keyboard has a lot of light bleeding through under the ` key (minor). And the worst problems i have experienced, my computer overheats! It shuts its self down randomly and i do not believe that the fan over the CPU is working (very major). I have sent it in for RMA with asus and will post an update later.
If i could change my rating I would give it 3.5-4 stars.

HP Pavilion DV6-2190US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

HP Pavilion DV6-2190US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DV6-2190us model is a desktop replacement.
Pros: The i7 processor is very fast, has 8 threads of execution (4 hyper-threaded cores) and the turbo boost kicks in when needed. It boots quickly, and runs applications quickly. I was able to install software and still use the machine without noticing any slowdown. It has a dedicated onboard graphics processor, with 1GB of dedicated graphics memory for gamers, I presume (I do not have any games to test it with).
Cons:
1. The fan runs continuously unless you turn it off in the BIOS. If you turn it off, it cycles, which is even more annoying. It cycles even when the laptop is idling (using very little cpu time). I did not notice the fan noise until I worked with it in my quiet office.
2. The keyboard layout takes learning. The pgup/dn are in the far upper right. The arrow keys and keypad keys are smaller than the QWERTY keys.
3. The power adapter has 120 watts output, and is huge and heavy.Other:
1. touchpad has a lot of friction, but if you use your fingertips, it glides pretty well.
2. The battery life wasn't too bad, but I wasn't pushing the CPU or graphics.
I exchanged it after a week for the HP DV4-2170us model, which is cheaper and more portable.

ASUS N82JQ-B1 14-Inch Laptop - Dark Brown Review

ASUS N82JQ-B1 14-Inch Laptop - Dark Brown
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm quite happy with this laptop. I installed Ubuntu to dual boot with Windows and everything works great in both OS's. The machine was actually faster than I was expecting it. My last laptop was a similar ASUS model with an i3 processor and this is noticeably faster. I also really like the keyboard and screen.
The one thing I don't like so much is the placement of some of the inputs. The power cord plugs in right next to the exhaust fan, so hot air blows on the cable and can get quite warm if I don't think to pull the cable out of the path of the air. I will not be surprised if the power cord fails one day because of this. Also, the ethernet cable plugs in on the right side in such a way that it gets in the way if I'm using a mouse. If you use WIFI, I guess this won't matter to you.
And about the color: I didn't really want a brown laptop but it had the specs I wanted so I bought it. It's a very muted brown and has a subtle design. Now that I see it, I think it looks pretty good without being too conspicuous.

ASUS N53JF-A1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum) Review

Average Reviews:

I am glad I decided on this laptop. Price vs. performance it is an absolute value and the speakers are awesome! They sound great for some little dinkey laptop speakers. The screen is great and YouTube HD videos are very nice, even though the laptop is only 720p or what ever. HD is HD unless you absolutely have to have full HD the display is great. The screen does fold back further than what I've used in a laptop which makes for an especially comfortable viewing angle sitting on the floor. I don't experience the phenomenon of keyboard flex. Then again I don't mash on mine when I'm frustrated. I reserve that for my head. Keys are decent in size and a number pad is always a plus. The physical appearance of the computer is beautiful and dark aluminum grey. The Geforce 425 video card is DirectX 11 which is new technology and 1GB of video memory is great. I don't really have any complaints about this laptop except for the battery life. I've only been able to squeeze about 3 hours of this 6 cell. It might not make for a great portable unless you had a 9 cell battery. However this laptop could make a pretty good desktop replacement if your on a budget. The Asus 2 year standard warranty is great considering you only get 1 with Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. 1 year standard accidental warranty. I would recommend this laptop.

Lenovo Y550P 324156U 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Lenovo Y550P 324156U 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After using Macs exclusively for 3 years, I switched back to Windows because of one reason: I wanted a quad core laptop (i7 specifically) and Apple has yet to make one. Furthermore, I know that when they do it will only be offered at first on the highest end of the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro models and will likely cost between $1800-$2200. When this laptop went on sale for $999.99, I knew I could no longer justify staying with Apple because $999.99 just happens to be the price of their lowest end laptop. For $999.99 (PC vs Mac) you can get processor quad core vs. dual core, HD 500GB vs 250GB, Ram 4GB vs 2GB, max ram 8GB vs 4GB, LCD 13.3" vs 15.6", and internal graphics of 256MB shared vs 1GB discrete. To me this is no contest. I was able to switch my Adobe programs over to PC by calling Adobe customer service and performing a cross platform swap. I needed to update my MS Office suite anyway so I didn't mind spending $170 to get MS Office Home/Student 2007 plus Outlook 2007. I will describe my experience with the Lenovo through a Pro/Con list, and I will compare the Apple and PC experience where necessary.
Pros:
*i7 quad-core laptop for $999.99
*i7 quad-core = very, very fast
*1GB discrete graphics will satisfy every need except only the highest of professional/gaming graphics processing needs.
*looks very nice and seems well-built
*4GB of ram is enough for now and the option to expand to 8GB later is great
*ExpressCard 34, eSATA and SD card slots are most welcome
Cons:
*fan is audible a good bit of the time, and most of the time during even moderate application usage. I was aware of this issue with quad-core laptops prior to purchase so it did not come as a surprise, but at the same time I do think it belongs on the con list
*terrible sound output quality and volume from the built-in speakers
*terrible sound output quality and volume as well as crackling/popping while using external speakers, so terrible that I had to buy a Creative XFI Expresscard Sound Card (which did, incidentally, fix all of the audio issues)
*audio out jack located on the front of the laptop (I know this is all too common on today's laptops but it is annoying nonetheless; the Creative XFI card also solved this issue)
*occasional high pitch whine (the source of which is still under investigation) which can be quite annoying
*location of the cooling fan inlet vent means that you will not be able to use this on your lap or on top of a bedspread unless you first put a hard flat object under the laptop first; the laptop essentially is designed to only be placed on hard flat surfaces
*no DVI, mini-DVI or mini-DisplayPort ports; HDMI and VGA (VGA?!?!?!?!) are the only video ports
*the built-in trackpad experience is truly atrocious: the trackpad has a raised grid surface (instead of a flat smooth surface like 99% of the laptops made) which makes navigation uncomfortable and imprecise. In addition, the scrolling bar is laughably unusable. It is made for hands with fingers the size of baby's fingers and using it requires tapping down once first to turn it on; one can not simply move their fingers over it to scroll
*battery life is terrible, but I knew this going in because all quad-core laptops have terrible battery life as a result of their power-hungry processors. You will not get the 4.5 hours of battery life as advertised, trust me. I don't know how they were able to achieve that number but virtually everything must have been disabled and/or turned all the way down.\
*a moderate amount of bloatware which I am still deleting/tinkering with after a week of ownership
*built-in LCD not particularly stunning but I find nothing objectionable about it either
*would have liked to get Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate considering this is a high-end laptop but I did know prior to purchase of course that I was only getting Windows 7 Home
*hard drive came partitioned into 4 parts which is very, very annoying. In addition a few of them took up massive amounts of hard drive space for no apparent reason. It took me a few days of messing around with various freeware utilities to get all (but the essential) of them deleted. (hint: check out the free "Ultimate Boot CD" it is what finally got rid of the pesky partitions that Windows disk utility wouldn't let me touch)
In my opinion, this is your basic garden-variety "desktop replacement" laptop. With an external keyboard, mouse and monitor this makes a great desktop that can sometimes be carried out of the home when need be. I find the "laptop only" experience to be sub-par. This is perfectly suitable for someone like me since my laptops have always spent over 95% of their time at home plugged into external I/O devices. If you are someone who is just the opposite, however, I can not recommended this unit because of the issues described above. Overall, I am satisfied with the unit primarily due to the performance specs and the price. There is just no arguing with the value of an i7 laptop with 1GB discrete graphics for $999.99. The length of the con list, however, was sufficient to cause me to drop the rating to 4/5.

(More customer reviews)
I own two of these laptops. The i5 processor is probably the best for the money. This laptop has some great features LED backlit, wireless certified N, bluetooth, and 4 GB of RAM. It has a 1.3 MP camera, most others are giving you a measley 0.3 MP camera in this class. A Multicard reader and a HDMI output port so if you want to connect it to your TV. This laptop comes with 128 MB of dedicated Video RAM. Not a huge amount but still better than nothing. Most laptops in this price range give you only the slower shared video memory which means the processor has to do extra work to get the picture output. Most reviews I have read were pretty good. No jittering or picture loss while watching TV. I used the ACER Backup manager to make all my backup DVD's. Its pretty simple to make a complete backup image of your hard drive with this software.Just follow the prompts. No need to pay $30 bucks for someone else to talk you into making them for you at the stores. If you are looking to play stereo music with this, Forget It! It only has a single MONO speaker. Good enough to listen to music or view videos while surfing. But dont expect alot. This isnt that kind of laptop. You could always listen to High fidelity sound through a pair of head phones though . And alot of people do surf that way. Not me! I have all the sound I need right in this speaker to watch videos and short clips. If you plan on watching a movie wear head phones with this laptop! The keybord layout seems pretty decent. The keys are the typical new style Chiclet flat keys. Most laptops seem to offer these now. The keys have a posative little pop to them when you press down on a key to feel the key stroke. Battery life has not been fully tested but from other reviewers it seems to be in the 3 hour plus range. It has very little nagware installed. You can easily uninstall whats there anyway. Amazon was selling these for five hundred and eighty dollars in october. I bought mine at office max for that price. The second one I paid five hundred bucks on black friday at the same place I bought the first one. A really great deal. Amazon doesnt price match and their pricing structure changes weekly depending on sales. So if the item is hot plan to pay a little more. If you can hold out awhile you might save eighty bucks by watching the price changes from week to week like I did. But I still recommend this laptop as a good buy. If you want more features in a laptop, for example, wide screen, stereo speakers, extra ports, larger keyboard, larger batteries, then maybe you should drop down to a intel core i3 for about the same money, and just deal with a little less speed and processing power. I hope this helps your decision.

HP Pavilion dv6-3052nr 15.6-Inch Entertainment Laptop (Silver)
Average Reviews:

Pros: Processor and GPU are excellent. I have ran Star Craft 2 on ultra settings without any issues. WoW on ultra except for shadows and get roughly 45 FPS in Dalaran. Minimal bloatware only took about 10 mins to remove.
Its a beautiful machine. The case has some kind of artsy pattern on it.
loading times are low thanks to the 7200 RPM drive. other laptops in this price range didn't have this. I was able to copy the 18GB WoW from my main computer to this in about 4-5 mins (via ethernet cable not wireless).
Cons: the display resolution is a little low for the size. I've seen other laptops in this size range with superior displays. In spite of this, the resolution is worth the sacrifice in exchange for everything else being so powerful.
The touch pad is a bit strange. The buttons are part of the pad. This means that while your trying to click on something you can accidentally move the mouse, however the sensitivity is very good.

Apple Imac 27-Inch Desktop Review

Apple Imac 27-Inch Desktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unsurpassed in style and power, this new Apple with Intel's Quad-core technology finds the top of the consumer desktop category. The screen is almost overwhelming with its 27 inches of real estate, but truly enables you to have multiple windows open at once without getting lost. The display problems that plagued some of the first models is now gone thanks to a firmware update (I never experienced any problems even before the update). The LED technology is a significant upgrade, and if you want to display HD TV programming, you will be blown away by the quality of the picture. I do wish Apple had included a Blu-ray player as at least an option instead of the 8x Superdrive, but that is a minor complaint. The Quad-core processor enables this machine to reach speeds that were only available before on high-end professional work stations.
Unsure at first about the new wheel-less mouse, I have come to appreciate the ease of finger swiping, as well as the Bluetooth wireless technology for both the mouse and keyboard. I still miss the numeric keypad on the keyboard, but not having to deal with a wire tether more than makes up for it, and another advantage is that you don't have to use a USB slot.
If you want to run Windows, Bootcamp provides that option along with Parallels. Although not officially approved, you can install Windows 7 with some minor adjustments. I will not go into a comparison of Snow Leopard and Windows 7, but in my mind once you get used to Apple's Snow Leopard, you will not want to go back to Windows. If you are considering an IMAC purchase, my recommendation is to go for the best. You will not be disappointed. The speed, beauty, and screen size of this IMAC makes the choice easy.

ASUS Republic of Gamers G51JX-A1 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (Blue) Review

ASUS Republic of Gamers G51JX-A1 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yeah, I guess you could be upset that you didn't get some complimentary swag or whatever with this machine, but I didn't buy it for swag.
Let's get down to business, shall we?
Pluses: Gorgeous, smooth graphics in Star Trek Online, DDO, Champions Online and Team Fortress 2 with the sliders cranked just shy of the max. EAX sound is amazing: even sounds decent out of the built-in speakers (really rocks with my headphones though). CPU performance and multitasking is sweet and responsive. I have multi-surfed Word, Visual Studio and Photoshop CS with no lag or issues.
More ports than you can shake a stick at: plenty of USB, eSATA, FireWire (1394) and even HDMI (which outputs to full 1080p if that floats your boat). Bluetooth devices are easily paired. Amazing Windows 7 performance (rates a 5.9 Windows Experience out of the box, with 6.6s in graphics, before any tweaking)
This thing is a sweet PC for money.
Cons: Runs hot. Be sure to keep side vents for cooling free. Might be worth investing in a cooling mat for this bad boy. Also, can we please not pre-install a bunch of crap on our new, high-performance gaming machines? I had to uninstall a bunch of cheesey ASUS games and stuff before I could really get down to business.

ASUS N71JQ-X1 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
The reviews prior to this one say what a great laptop this is but that it lacked a Blu-Ray player. The description must have been off when most people first ordered this, and I would be upset if I had thought I was getting blu-ray player, but didn't. That being said, and I knew what I was getting. Let me be clear; this is an AMAZING value for what you're getting...even without Blu-Ray. Think about it; you're getting an Intel Core i7 laptop, with a 1GB ATI discrete graphics card, 17 inch, high def screen, and a 500GB hard-drive...oh and 4GB of Kingston RAM...all for under $1200 (as of this writing)? Are you kidding me?
I love this laptop, and I was a lifelong HP guy, until my screen died after 2 years of use...the build quality on this is incredible, the screen is beautiful, and as for Blu-Ray...meh. Everything's going disc-less digital anyway. A few years from now, and everything will be download only anyway.
Don't let the other reviews fool you, this is THE value in laptops, from one of the most well-decorated manufacturers of the last few years. Check out some sites on the net, do your research, and I'm sure you'll come to the same conclusion I did...this is the laptop to own.
Good luck and happy hunting.
ADDITIONAL INFO (Posted 3/22/2010) after using this laptop for the past few days, I can safely say that this was a great bargain. It's faster and more responsive than my previous HP that cost 3x as much. Also, it came with DDR3 1333 RAM instead of the advertised 1066. Nice little bonus. Point being, if you buy this laptop, I doubt you'd ever regret it.

I purchased this as a replacement for my (Asus ROG G73)as i needed a much smaller yet powerful laptop as I move around a lot overseas. I am very satisfied with it. The smaller form factor,USB 3.0 and dedicated video card is what sold me on this laptop.
Battery last a little over 2 hours when just surfing the web and chatting on low power settings.
Only 1 con for me and that is no backlit Keyboard but i knew that when i purchased it.

ASUS N61JQ-XV1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) Review

ASUS N61JQ-XV1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There wasn't many reviews out there about this system so i decided to leave one. A laptop with i7 OMG! This is just a note: Most of the software pre-installed on this system are 64-bit versions so if your wondering why some of the same programs on your 32-bit computer have been updated or newer versions available that is why. I discovered that after i deleted some of them and found out the 32-bit versions of the programs wouldn't work on this computer windows update would constantly give me an ERROR message trying to update the 32-bit software so I had to re-download the 64-bit versions.
PROS:
I have never owned a 64-bit computer or a laptop before and I have always bought Dell desktops in the past. After searching around for months i couldn't find a laptop with these specs and price tag as the ASUS N61JQ Laptop anywhere. Newegg.com had the same laptop at the same price however Amazon offered free 2-day shipping so i went with Amazon. I received this laptop about 3 weeks ago and i couldn't be happier with my decision. It is a powerhouse and does everything i throw at it without a hiccup. I do a lot of TV recording and commercial editing and video editing and file transfers and downloading with a little gaming thrown in there and it does all the above flawlessly. It is incredibly faster than my 32-bit XPS Dell Desktop and its in laptop form! It runs at about 50-60 degrees Celsius during normal use however i did buy a Targus cooler. I have never seen the temp over 67 C. So far i have not had any negative things to say about its performance. I found most of the bloatware pre-installed on this system somewhat useful so i only had to remove a few programs i did not need. I plan to upgrade my DVD drive to blu-ray. I recommend buying Cyberlink Power DVD 10 with this system. It makes watching dvd's or videos look amazing! but that's just personal preference. The brown color of the cover on this laptop looks black with a hint of dark dark brown. You cant tell its brownish unless you shine a light right on it. I think it looks really classy.
The 3.0 UBS port is AWESOME! Copy movies and TV shows to my external in like seconds. I did a complete back up of my ASUS primary hard rive (138GB) and it transferred everything to my external hard drive in about 5 minutes!! The 64-bit IE Browser seems to me to be considerably faster then the 32-bit browser. All of the slots are on the sides (i.e. power chord plug in, USB, Ethernet) because the screen folds to low in the back to have any there.
CONS:
Since this computer is a powerhouse the battery only lasts about 45 to 90 minutes under normal use and since the screen hangs down so low in the back I'm not sure if you can get a bigger battery for it or not. So if you don't mind having your laptop plugged in most of the time i would definitely recommend this laptop. I would consider it more of a sleek and stylish portable desktop till they make a bigger battery for it. The screen seems dull to me(compared to HD TV's) but for a HD screen on a laptop that's not really a complaint. I wish the keys were back-lit. And this isn't really a complaint about the system itself per say but I have discovered that there isn't many programs out there yet designed for 64-bit computers. Even the browsers out there are still in beta stages. Even though i would prefer 64-bit software, most of the 32-bit programs will still run on a 64-bit system. Hope this review was helpful! I purchased the asus n61jq-b2(blue ray version) and was very unhappy when I couldn't open any programs out of the box without the system freezing up on me! I tried everything from removing blote-ware, to moving the few files (pictures and music) that I put on the C drive along with the OS, to the D drive which was empty. that did not fix the issue, I finally reformated the C drive and re-installed the Windows 7 OS. now this computer is running like a dream. I have a desktop with intel q6700and 4g of 800 mhz ram to compare it with and it is faster. dont know what caused the problem, but the reinstall saved me from returning the unit. this laptop also came with 1333mhz ram not the posted 1066mhz. just a little bonus. It also runs very cool compared to my old hp laptop. I am very happy with my purchase and impressed with the new intel i7-740QM. 5 stars for the money. and one last thing. Don't let the brown color scare you, it can pass as black.

HP Pavilion dv7-4295us Entertainment Notebook PC - Silver Review

HP Pavilion dv7-4295us Entertainment Notebook PC - Silver
Average Reviews:

Bad
I bought this at Fry's for an equivalent price.
I'm now on my 3rd laptop after getting replaced for hardware failures. 1st laptop the video died on the laptop monitor. It was replaced after 2 days. The 2nd the fan failed after 3 days. I'm now on my 3rd laptop, hopefully its the charm.
Good
Ergonomics could be better. The battery extends below the body, creating a lift to the laptop. This is fine when on a table or desk, but rests just above my knee when on my lap. I'm surprised there is only one fan outlet, its blows out the back left and is also faces down, a blanket or thick rug can easily block the vent.
All ports are located on the left and right. I do wish there was at least 1 usb and the power in the back.
The HP logo also lights up when powered on, like Apple's. I'm not sure if there is a way to turn it off. I like to keep it running overnight and the light can be distracting.
Best
The laptop itself is fast as can be. The Windows performance index is only slowed by the speed hard drive, which is rare with a laptop, it's usually the video that slows down a system.
The software that comes installed is actually useful. Not much bloatware (except norton, sprint, ebay). The wildtangent games are fun and most are free. There are utilities to change how often the fan runs, and apps for bluetooth and wifi.

This is my very first laptop, and I am impressed! I wanted to get the latest chipset and a decent graphics card. I have used other laptops b4 but the prices on the "name brand" deals are outrageous. I am a gamer geek, and I play an online interactive RPG, I can log on wirelessly and play for hours!!! Gigabyte really did a great job here. The one and only complaint I have is the keys are kinda big, but it does come with a full size number pad, so that is good. I love it!

Amazon appears to be the only place that has user reviews for the envy 14 WITHOUT the 1600x 900 radiance display, which is no long available. I searched and read every blog talking about this before I bought, here's the bottom line. I was so hesitant and hemmed and hawed about buying this after reading all the blogs- why? Because I'm like a lot of buyers out there, it really bugs me to get something new without having the best of everything installed on it, especially when it comes to computers because of the rapidness in which your brand new technology becomes 2nd best, and then nearly obsolete. The blogs were filled with people who got the radiance screen bragging profusely and potential buyers refusing to pull the trigger on this laptop unless the radiance display comes back...mixed with all the technical jargon about 1366x768 vs 1600x900 for this or that application, etc etc.
I bought it anyway, why? It truly is the perfect size for the perfect balance between portability and performance. Amazon had an awesome price of less than 1000 bucks for not the lowest speed processor or smallest hard drive, a very nice build of 640 gb, 7200 rpm drive and the 3rd fastest available core i5. It also just plain looks sexy compared to any other windows based laptop being produced! It truly is a strong competitor for the MacBook pro, being made to look like it, but just different enough with some extra flair to set it apart.
Now the display- it is sad that HP lost the radiance display, that display is what in my opinion would have made the envy 14 laptop the absolute best laptop produced in 2010, and would have outdone the 15 inch and higher MacBook pro in every single category. As it stands now, I believe it outdoes the 13 inch MacBook pro, and for 300 bucks less! As far as windows based laptops in the same size and class, like I said, it's the best balance of price, performance, and portability, and best looking. The 1366x 768 edge to edge glass display is still nice, it honestly is- iTunes movies at 720p look great, text is crystal clear, colors are brilliant, honestly, even if you are a power user, I don't see why you would be disappointed with the quality of the display, and remember the radeon 5650 card can do anything you need it to do more than what the laptop display provides when you hook it up to an HDTV or external LCD HD monitor. So, be angry at hp if you must, and refuse to buy this laptop without the better display, but if you can get over it, you will not be disappointed with this laptop if you do buy it...
