PocketBook 302 eInk eBook Reader Review

PocketBook 302 eInk eBook Reader
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually purchased this device on eBay. So the price was $70 more than here on Amazon. Alas, my mistake. But despite the price factor I don't regret that I own Pocketbook 302. I have a white color version of this device. It is truly one of the great e-book readers on the market today. It got a WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. I was able to connect it to my home network without any problems. The device has a touch screen and a stylus that comes with it. When you turn the pages there is less than a second interval, which is of course a very nice indicator of how fast the device corresponds to the button commands. It got a whole bunch of nice little applications such as web browser and notepad. It also has some games like Sudoku and Snake and others which I didn't really play. You can configure buttons on the device to your liking from the settings menu. The main deal breaker for me was that this book reads almost any language (in my case Cyrillic) and in any format you can think of (.rtf, .txt, .fb2, .pdf,) So you basically don't need to install any software on your computer in order to convert books. Just connect it to your PC and transfer the file, I usually use txt and fb2 formats. You can hook this device up to any available WiFi and download a book right on it using a web browser. The only drawback of this device was a glossy screen, when on direct light; you could see your face in there like in the mirror. But yesterday I received a matte screen protector from the seller, free of charge and applied on the screen. And I must say that it does make a significant difference. The screen is a lot less glossy now. So if you thinking of purchasing this device you should ask a seller for matte screen protector. Another thing what you should do is to update the firmware with the latest version. Along with the firmware in zipped file, there comes a new improved browser, you only need to copy it to the device. I found it working very nicely. I don't really like the design of the flipping leather cover. Because you have to kind of glue you device to the sticky part on the cover. I think the design of the case could have been realized better, for example like on Sony e-book devices. The battery life is really great, but I noticed that when you use wifi and web browsing it drains kind of fast. But when you just read the books it can last for more than a month. Overall it is a really nice ebook reader and I highly recommend it for those people who want to be able to read on various languages, without installing any conversion software on your PC and having a contract-free ebook reading device.

Archos 5 16GB Internet Tablet with Android (Black) Review

Archos 5 16GB Internet Tablet with Android (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I previously owned the 605 WiFi and the Vision 3. This is a huge step up. PROS: great sound, excellent video playback, very responsive screen (especially for a resistive touch), G-Sensor and Accelerometer works great, Browser is awesome, games run great, etc. Now I updated to the newest firmware only to find that youtube has not been fixed. But here's the thing...I used a hack to install marketplace and now Youtube works great. Strange?
CONS: proprietary plugs, too many accessories that you have to buy to get full experience, charge time is kind of extreme, does not come with marketplace. it has their own version. gets lots of fingerprints!
They almost messed this one up. they are so close i can taste it. Every year they release a amazing play on paper...but when you use it...you find that certain features may or may not work. or work half a**. This is very close. In october they will be releasing ever better players that include so much more including built in camera :-). It's not bad...i still prefer it over the iPod touch. especially since it will sync with nearly any player. not just itunes. works with Winamp and Windows Media player. Another cool thing is that if you have album art...it will import it. very cool. There are two versions of the Archos 5. one with android and one without. It was definitely a good idea to go WITH android. It's almost impossible to screw up android. Having owned the iPod Touch, iPhone, Archos 605, and more....I can honestly say...this one isn't bad. especially for the price. Wish it had more space though. 16gb isn't enough for me. but hey...it comes with the SD slot too so you can add up to 32gb. awesome!

Android 2.1 Tablet PC X220 flytouch2 with GPS and Webcam Review

Android 2.1 Tablet PC X220 flytouch2 with GPS and Webcam
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this tablet, my first Android device, and I was kinda wondering what I would receive...
So far I'm really pleased with this thing!
Being a Palm and iPod Touch user and early adopter of what people call "smart phones", I wasn't sure if I wanted a large-format device. I have friends who are pushing their Apple tablets at me and I'm an iMac user myself... but I just wasn't sure if I needed (read that as wanted) a tablet.
I bought this on "speculation" to see if I could have a little fun and perhaps learn something new.
I'm having the fun part right away and I can see that some learnin' is headed my way here with the Android operating system this tablet uses. Not hard learning, but with the "open-ness" of Android I expect to be finding new stuff to do for a good while.
Out of the box I received a durable-feeling device with a nice large screen. It turned-on first try and responded to the battery charger just like the (little) owner's manual predicted. There is a great deal more going on with this thing than the little booklet speaks of, but the manual is complete enough for anyone to realize all but the nuts and bolts of Android... I believe the manual was not intended to tech Android to a user but to simply expose the buyer to the capabilities of the tablet. The manual is a translation, but a good one with pictures and diagrams. Easy to read and understand.
I haven't done much with it yet, but I have connected to the net using my WPA-2 WiFi "Apple Airport Extreme" and had no problem with the setup. It reminded me of getting a Nintendo DSi connected... it was that easy. I am using MAC address filtering and that posed no problem after putting the tablet's MAC address in my list.
The Localization settings were easy with the only "snag" as yet being the temperature display in the Home screen is in Centigrade and I can't (as yet) figure out how to switch to Fahrenheit. It even "found" my little home town to use as the target city :)
The only other thing I haven't figured yet is if the operating system is consuming part of the 2 gig of memory, leaving only 1 gig free or if the device shipped with only 1 gig of memory.
I think this problem is my lack of familiarity with Android :)
I will attempt to provide a better review as time allows, but for now I'm happy.
One final note, the device is called a "MID" in the Owner's Manual and the following information appears in the "About Device" screen on the device it's self;
Model Number: deb
Firmwear Version: 2.1-update1
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9 hzhao@emma #1
Build Number: deb-r2.1.1170
There is another tablet listed on Amazon called a "MID" but it does not seem to have a camera or a GPS receiver. This unit's GPS "antenna" is external and I think the little hocky-puck is both an antenna and receiver combined.
Update: (12/26/2010)
Liking the tablet! The hardware is working great, no problems at all, no glitches or silly business from the device or the Android "build" as is installed.
The only things I'm watching are;
- The "Home" button on the front is not indexed exactly right under the front cover. Not a problem but there was a moment where it was trying to get stuck.
- One of the tiny little "plugs" covering the cabinet screws has fallen out. This is no problem at all as there will come a day when I want to take those screws out myself and those plugs are going away on that day. As a side note, this tablet survived a drop from my desk top to the plastic carpet protector under the desk without a glitch.
- The Android "build" has a little trouble when rotating the screen. Two issues so far 1.) When you use Google's Star application, the Horizon is oriented incorrectly and does not correct even when you try the adjustments for screen rotation in Android or in Google's application. Weirdly, the names of planets and stars continue to rotate (to the wrong angle) even if you turn-off all the rotation controls. 2.) When you use the device in the "Landscape" orientation there is a very useful "Back" button in the screen in the top right... when you rotate to "Portrait" orientation that button goes away and you have to use the hardware buttons. Not really a big deal but the behavior of the on-screen "Back" button and the hardware button are not exactly the same in all applications.
- About keyboards, mice, and memory devices. USB supports all these but does not recognize anything else. I am using a Bluetooth "dongle" and my Apple "Magic Mouse" but my HID Bluetooth keyboard and Bluetooth GPS are not recognized. So far I have not found an application that can pair any Bluetooth devices that are not physically incorporated in the device (that's none so far). The Bluetooth dongle I have states it is a wired equivalent of a mouse and keyboard.. but that HID keyboard is not working.
That's all for now. It's worth the $230 to me so far but I'm new at this so I might not have the expectations a more seasoned Android user might have.
Update: (1/7/2011)
The people I got my tablet from are fantastic! I used email to talk to them about getting a registration number for the Android release on my tablet and they were really warm and responsive. It was like they actually liked the product!
I no longer see them listed as sellers but I will look for them the next time I want something from China.
(Beijing Ning Rong Technology Development Co. Ltd)
I Learned some stuff.
- There are a lot of "Widgets" and "Gadgets" that fail when used on a tablet... perhaps it's just this one, but I suspect the large screen is giving them trouble.
- You can use an Apple Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard (Retail Packaging) by first pairing them on your desktop machine and then moving the Bluetooth "dongle" to the Flytouch. I use an IOGear USB 2.1 Bluetooth Micro Adapter GBU421
- The "Escape" key on the keyboard functions like the "Back" button on the screen.
- F4 seems to first, put the device into "sleep" then shortly it will re-boot.
- F1 acts like the "Menu" button.
Still have not found any applications that provide USB support for other than keyboard, mouse, and memory. I hope the developers of Android see the tablet as a "future" for Android and start providing full support for USB attached peripherals.
The display is really nice indoors. Outdoors it's washed-out but usable.
Price jump. What's this about?!?
I'm a little disturbed that this tablet has jumped in price. I kinda was thinking about a second one for a friend but at this rate, she's probably going to get something else. Too bad, we like this one. :)
Update: (01/19/2011) - Sorry if this is turning into a "blog"...
An update to the Android OS has come out, not a big change like version 2.2 or anything, but it allowed me to see what and how upgrades look like and are done.
It did not go so well. I had to go onto the Internet and find the proper file myself and load it again using a micro SD card. After that everything was back to "normal". I had to find and re-load all the applications I had loaded and every setting had to be re-entered. I later found out that you can back-up these things and save yourself some time. Considering the changes to the Android OS, I will wait for a major update before going with another minor one again... too much hassle for not so much gain.
The tablet is still a winner! I have it running for several hours a day and am even now watching a DVD TV show (converted using "Handbrake" for the Mac). Playback is smooth at 720 x 400 and around 1100 bits per second (m-peg4). See, this thing is making me learn about stuff like Android OS and video data rates :)
Still can't set the Weather widget to Fahrenheit, but otherwise I'm still happy with the purchase.

Superpad 10.2" Tablet PC, Google Android 2.1, Webcam, GPS, HDMI, USB, WIFI, 2 micro SD card slots Review

Superpad 10.2 Tablet PC, Google Android 2.1, Webcam, GPS, HDMI, USB, WIFI, 2 micro SD card slots
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using this android Superpad now for about a week. I wanted to wait until I had a chance to see how it works before I wrote a review.
The Superpad came with everything as promised. It was shipped from China and arrived quickly via FedEx at no additional charge. Upon opening the box, I found everything inside that was promised- pad, soft case, 110v charger, GPS antenna and manual. Of course it needed charging and I plugged it in overnight.
When I started to use the pad I found it was just like my Android phone in many respects. It took me little time to get familiar with the pad because of my past experience. The Google Marketplace was installed and it was easy to browse and install various apps that I wanted.
I have been able to upload many of the apps that I use on my phone as well as an "office" suite for all my docs I want to have with me. I was able to find an internet browser that supports most of the movie formats and that is a great addition. I have been using the 2- USB plugs to bring many items from my desktop into the pad and the fact that it has two memory card slots- micro sd- makes its memory grow to 64 gb. The camera works well and overall, I have had no problems with the unit.
I think my experience with the Android phone has helped in knowing how the OS works and understanding the Superpad better. It is no different than when you go from Windows to Windows 7- it takes a little time to get used to something new.
This is one slick little gadget that I am finding very useful- at $200-300 less than an i-Pad and with more standard features- it is a great buy!

Archos 43 4.3-Inch 8 GB Internet Tablet with Android Review

Archos 43 4.3-Inch 8 GB Internet Tablet with Android
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a video demo and testing of the Archos 43 - 16 GB Internet Tablet. Overall, I am very happy with its improvements over the Archos 5 IT. I have also changed the rating to a 5 stars after updating the OS to Android 2.2 with the Adobe Flash 10 player installed. This gadget rocks !
12/21/10 update
- I have been using this gadget on a daily basis since my original post for checking emails and surfing the web for news in the morning while still lying lazy on my bed. So far so good and it has replaced my iPhone for such use as it is lighter and has a wider display for full web-site surfing. The only issue I have is the short battery life which I have to circumvent by disabling the Wifi when not in use.
Overall feel and handling
The unit is extremely light and fits easily in a shirt pocket. It is much more portable than the Archos 5 IT and even the i-Phone. The single-touch resistive screen works quite nice also. I also noticed that the camera has a small clear plaster cover on it which should be removed for better recording.
OS and applications
12/01/10 Update
- Updated OS to Android 2.2 ! This gadget is a lot more stable and works faster after the update. We would need to reinstall the latest Google Marketplace app from the Archos fans site as the previous version does not work with Android 2.2. The Adobe Flash 10 player would also needed to be installed (from the Google Market place) in order to view flash videos from the websites.
Archos 5 used to have an application called Thinkfree office installed which allowed us to view PDF, excel, and word document. I am not able to find this same application on the Archos 43. However, this application and the Adobe viewer could be downloaded from the Google Markletplace. Do some research on the Archosfans website and you would be able to get the instructions on installing the Marketplace app.
Video and display
The display is very nice and sharp. In the demo video, I also showed a side-by-side comparison between an i-Phone and the Archos 43. The display area for the Archos 43 is 32% larger than an iPhone. Whereas the Archos 5 IT has a 65% larger display area over the iPhone with its 4.8" screen. Even though the display area is not much larger than the iPhone, the viewing experience is notably different. The video camera recording is of average quality. It does OK in well lighted area but the video is pretty grainy under poor lighting conditions. I also found some issues with the Amazon's Kindle viewer. The right side text was chopped off by the menu bar.
Sound
The external speaker is much better than the Archos 5 IT and produced much more sound in comparison.
WiFi and internet connection
There are major improvements in the Wifi connection as I experienced no trouble connecting the WiFi to my home wireless network. This was the most annoying problem I had with the Archos 5 IT.
Batteries
Charge time is much better than the Archos 5 IT. Took about 2-3 hours for a full charge. It lasts for about 2-3 hours of constant uses. If we leave the Wifi on, it seems to drain the battery charge rather rapidly. I did another benchmark testing by playing only video with the external speaker at 50% volume. It ran for a good 6-7 hours on a full charge.
It uses a standard micro-USB cable for connection to the PC.
Overall, I am quite pleased with this gadget particularly its light weight and larger screen size than my iPhone.

Coby Kyros MID7024-4G 7-Inch Android Internet Touchscreen Tablet (MID7024-4G) Review

Coby Kyros MID7024-4G 7-Inch Android Internet Touchscreen Tablet (MID7024-4G)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have searched for a good tablet for days and compare so many with regards to price and capabilities. This one is not cheap, its a steal. One of the most important thing about this tablet is that, its not one of those china cheap brands that I almost bought before finding out all the problem people have to deal with. I committed to buy something that I can call the manufacture and ask for help or return it, in the extremist. The second great thing about it is the 1 GHz processor 512MB RAM 2.2 Android OS and the ability to get flash player on it. What this mean,(for those who don't care much about computer specs) you can watch almost all YouTube videos, Hulu, ESPN, play flash player games online, read books, PDF files , word , excel, PowerPoint and many more applications without having delays and what so ever other issues cheap tablets have. Also, there are very few tablets going for this price with 4G capabilities. It comes with wifi, 1080p video output, HMDI port to connect to your HD TV or laptop or whatever. Memory expansion is up to 32 Gigs; I mean, look how much apple Ipad lovers pays to just jump from 16gigs to 32gigs. Since apps and games for Coby KYROS tablets are from the AppsLib(tm) marketplace, which does not have as much apps as goggle android, many people find this a limitation. However, it is possible to root this tablet and use the Google android apps without a problem. Just needs a little do it your self twik found all over Youtube.
Pros:
You can't find anything comparable to this product in the market right now that goes for this price, I've spend days researching this.
Cons:
Still uses the resistive screen technology, its really not a bad thing, but some people find it annoying. You just have to get use to it I guess.
Other than that, I can't think of any other cons.
And for the price you pay, need I say more?

NAV 9 SLATE PC (64GB + 3G) TABLET PC NETBOOK LAPTOP UMPC COMPUTER with WINDOWS 7 HP Review

Average Reviews:

I am happy to report that after purchasing the NAV 9, it has surpassed my expectations! While some may bemoan its thickness, it has the IPAD beat in so many areas...there is no comparison! The thickness is necessary since the NAV 9 has a cooling fan which the IPAD does not! The NAV 9 has 3 USB ports, the IPAD does not! The NAV 9 is a computer the IPAD isn't! This was by far the best purchase I have made in 2010! Everyone that has seen it has commented favorably about it and several are in the process of ordering it! If you want a serious computer for college classroom environment, business meetings, just kick around at home, this is it! The virtual keyboard works fine but I bought a keyboard case for an Android from China for about $30 that makes this product unbeatable! Get in line because this technology (slate) will replace laptops in the next 2-3 years!

PocketBook Pro 902 Dark Grey eBook Reader Review

PocketBook Pro 902 Dark Grey eBook Reader
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought 902 and been using it for few months, and I am satisfied.
Good colors.
Black frame recommended.
Good long lasting battery.
G sensor works fine in all directions on all screens and books.
Reads almost everything including good html processing and the new docx, does some trouble with chm format.
Wi-Fi tested and passed, finds networks pretty fast.
Big screen, easy reading, zoom improves the reading on pdf with images only (magazines mostly).
Software updates distributed and fixed annoying problems.
Does require some work on tags on the book collection in order for the library option to work better.
Handles big files (over 100 MB) without hanging.
Top of the line for me after weeks of searching and comparing.
Very recommend non color reader.

Samsung Galaxy Tab (Sprint) Review

Samsung Galaxy Tab (Sprint)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Tab is a perfect hybrid between my phone and laptop. All the apps of your cell with the functionality of a laptop. Size is perfect for my purse. Lighter than the Kindle, which I also own. Battery is great even with several apps running AND..drum roll please, you can upload to it. Automatic Ipad killer with that function alone. This is the first product that I've had that runs on the android platform and its flow is easy and simple.
Camera is decent, both back and front. I do like the idea of both. The one on the front is not the greatest and unless you are in good light don't even bother with a self portrait.
Screen size and display is just beautiful, eye catching. Slightly smudgy at times so invest in the screen protector. Also GET A CASE!! It's essential and protects a very valuable investment.
Kindle & Nook apps are great, prefer reading on Kindle but in a pinch this will work well.
Skype works like a charm along with all the multiple other apps available and it comes preloaded with quite a lot! Some rather useless but that's standard these days with almost every product. I did a quick clean and deleted quite a few while adding more. I'm not a game player but I do have Pandora and Slacker radio installed, both are battery killers!
Seriously this is just a perfect on the go or at home toy. I generally keep it on WI-FI at home to reduce cost. The monthly plan is pricey thru Sprint and sort of disappoints when you have to constantly remember to turn off the 3G and/or switch to the Wi-fi if its available. Turning on the 3G feature should be slightly easier as well but once you get use to turning things on and off, it goes rather quickly. I do like the idea of turning off things running in the background at will, and be careful because there are a lot of things running willy nilly in the background. They are battery drainers! An average day of texting, cruising FB and Yahoo messenger means at least one good charge every 10 to 12 hrs. If I'm just texting and essentially keeping off the internet I can go two days without charging. I do find that it doesn't charge very fast if connected to my pc vs charging thru an electrical socket but it will maintain the juice it has if it is connected to your pc.
You do get a number assigned to your tab and you can text, which is a feature that is hardly ever mentioned in promo for the product. I've essentially stopped texting from my phone and moved it over to the much bigger and crisper screen of the Tab with the added bonus of using the Swype feature. That app is amazing by the way! Once the phone feature is added, which it will be, I would more than willingly drop my cell phone.

Access by texting "FOOTBALL" to 7777 on the handset to download Sprint Football Live from Sprint Digital Lounge (standard text messaging and data rates apply).

Swype Keyboard
An alternative to the Android virtual keyboard, the Swype virtual keyboard (seen at the right) allows you to input text by swiping the finger with one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard. Based on testing, speed and accuracy are equal to or better than the traditional keyboard-tapping method. You can activate the Swype keyboard by pressing and holding in a text field, wait for popup to appear, click Input Method, and then select Swype.

In the image to the left, the word "quick" was generated from tracing the path shown above in a fraction of a second, by roughly aiming to pass through the letters of the word. A key advantage to Swype is that there is no need to be very accurate, enabling very rapid text entry.

Gigabyte T1005M-CF1 N550 10.1-Inch Convertible Tablet Netbook (Latte Gold Finish) Review

Gigabyte T1005M-CF1 N550 10.1-Inch Convertible Tablet Netbook (Latte Gold Finish)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll start with the biggest disappointment: even with a 6-cell battery, the T1005M is only good for about 4 hours. That's true even turning off all of the optional features (Bluetooth, USB 3.0, Wi-Fi, etc.), turning down the screen brightness, and setting the power plan to "Max Battery."
The second big disappointment is the lack of a stylus. The T1005M, unlike the majority of convertibles in its class, uses a capacitive touchscreen. That means that you have to touch it with the pad of your finger, rather than being able to use your fingernail as you could on the resistive screen of the T1000P. With the screen's high 1366x768 resolution, many of the targets on the screen are quite small and hard to hit. It's odd that they included a stylus with the T1000P where it was less important. Also, the screen is recessed from the bezel, meaning that it's impossible to tap with your finger at the very edges of the screen.
The first thing I did upon receiving my computer was to install Windows 7 Ultimate so I could have Bitlocker encryption. I therefore can't comment on the touchscreen app that Gigabyte includes to make up for the lack of touch support in Windows 7 Starter. Gigabyte nicely includes a CD with all of the drivers you need if you do a new Windows installation. (Hint: the F2 key gets you into the BIOS, and Alt+F12 gets you into a screen where you can choose an alternative boot device.)
There is only one button on the bezel, which brings up Gigabyte's "Smart Manager," which lets you turn off the battery hogs, change screen orientation, and adjust volume. The computer would have benefited from a couple of buttons that could be user-assigned to other tasks, as found on all "real" tablets. For example, I found myself desperately wishing for a button that I could program to mute my computer for when I need to answer a phone call quickly.
When using the machine in laptop mode, I was surprised at how useful the multi-touch touchpad is. It recognizes some of the same gestures as the screen (e.g. pinching to shrink text), and has several of its own. You can drag two fingers to scroll, pull down with three fingers to bring up Task Switcher, tap with multiple fingers to middle- or right-click, and many more. It takes a little while to remember them all, but it's a huge improvement over the standard single-finger touchpad.
It appears from looking at professional reviews that Gigabyte sent reviewers models with 2GB of RAM, a 320GB HD, and Windows 7 Home Premium, yet I couldn't find that configuration for sale anywhere. I know that Gigabyte was trying to hit a certain price point with this "CF1" configuration, but it makes the professional reviews misleading. I found that things often got bogged down with only 1GB of RAM, and I wound up upgrading it (using a Crucial CT25664BC1067 2GB 204-PIN PC3-8500 SODIMM DDR3 Memory Module). With 2GB, it was quite responsive with productivity apps such as Microsoft Office, browsing with Google Chrome, using Amazon's Kindle app, and watching full-screen DivX media. For some reason I was never able to get Netflix streaming to work in high definition, although Netflix looks acceptable in non-high definition mode, even in full-screen mode. The dual-core processor means that it rarely suffers the stuttering common on single-core systems.
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of sound from the speakers. However, as you would expect from a netbook, the power is limited. I found that cranking the speakers up to maximum got me to a volume where it was comfortable to watch a show in a quiet room, but I had trouble hearing dialog over the murmur of hospital waiting room. The good news is that the headphone output provides plenty of power to make a set of earbuds louder than I could possible want.
The screen has a fairly limited viewing angle, but I've always managed to find a way to get the screen at an angle where it looks good. However, this unit may not be a good choice if you expect to be working on the screen with other people (i.e. having two people looking at it at the same time from different angles).
A couple of nice touches that aren't mentioned in the product description: the computer comes with a relatively nice case. It's not a carrying case (it has no handle), but it a nice-looking and lightweight way to protect the computer when you're carrying it around in a backpack or bag. It also comes with a microfiber cloth to clean the screen from the inevitable fingerprints that accumulate. (Fortunately fingerprints are not as obvious as I feared they would be for such a glossy screen, but it's still good to have.)
If you're the type who compares the "Windows Experience Index," here are the numbers that I got:
Processor: 3.1
Memory: 4.5 (that's with the original RAM, it improved to 4.6 after I upgraded)
Graphics: 2.6
Gaming Graphics: 3.0
Hard Disk: 5.5
Any netbook is a trade-off, and a convertible doubly so. As you can already guess, I can't give an unqualified endorsement to this unit, but it works reasonably well for what I use it for. I also have to say that I almost gave it three stars: a unit with Win7 Starter and 1GB is, frankly, underpowered, and it's disappointing that it's the only configuration Gigabyte seems to distribute in the U.S.

HP Slate 500 8.9" Black Review

HP Slate 500 8.9 Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a quick review. I have had my tablet for the past month plus. I am a heavy tablet user and have had tablets for the past 5 years. (Motion Computing, Lenovo convertible). I thought hard about buying the IPAD, I held back and I was so happy that I did. Everyone, I talk to that has an IPAD says that it does not do what a computer does. I am tired of getting an item and finding out that I have to find all of the work arounds (extra apps) to do what my slate does for me. I am a heavy pc user and have found that this tablet has replaced my Lenovo Convertible tablet. I use my HP to get my work done, surface the web, enjoy movies, listen to music and then get out and ENJOY LIFE by moving around and socializing with real people!
PROS:
1.WEIGHT: HP Slate weighs 1.5 lbs with the pen and nice case 1 lb 10oz. Any item that gets to 2 lbs is too heavy to carry. The screen is big enough to do work. I think the power cable is 9oz?? Most newer tablets are pushing 3lbs which is the SAME as a LAPTOP. A Laptop, that lasting 2hrs forces you to carry the power cable 1lb, too heavy to carry in your bag.
2.Your Software works: NO finding work arounds and converting file formats from Android/IPAD
3.No DVD drive: I have a portable DVD drive so I plugged it in, the driver installed. But for software, you can download the trial versions off the web and then use your key to unlock your programs
3.Windows 7 Professional: Quick, seems as fast as my Lenovo Convertible Tablet. But I have not done heavy work such as video editing on this machine. I have had 7 programs opened and have not had any problems in speed.
4. Office 2010: Word works great, PowerPoint awesome, OneNote wonderful. Excel as usual. But I haven't pushed EXCEL or the other software in the bundle yet.
5.Other Favorites: Snippingtool: Lets you take a picture of anything on your screen; Cutepdf: Free pdfprinter on line; Freemind Mindmap, Stickies, Picasa to alter photos
5. Free AVG or AVAST Antivirus
6. Printer: Set up your PC printer as usual. Lexmark 901 wireless. Downloaded the driver from the website and installed. I suspect my other printers will install as this is windows.
7. Web Browsing: Explorer or Mozilla. All my web programs work, gotomeeting, toodledo.com.
8. FLASH YES, Youtube, HULU, watch my favorite shows online.
9. SD Memory Card: Can upload your photos from you camera. Have a 32GB ($50). Increases memory from built-in 60GB to 92GB. So much can be stored in the cloud which frees up space on the tablet.
10.USB slot: Plug and play my CURRENT Windows items. Drivers are there. USB Mouse, microphones, storage drives, phone charger. No searching the web looking for a work around with my existing tech gadgets. Many items running android and IPAD do not have the drivers for accessories
11.Wireless: I have no problems connecting at work, starbucks, coffee shops, home.
Bluetooth: Connected my old Foldout Stowaway keyboard (didn't have to spend another $100). Figured out how connect my jawbone but the sound quality is not great to listen to music. Probably ok for Skype calls.
12.MIC/Headset/Speakers: The Speakers are loud enough to listen for personal use in a room similar to a hotel room. They don't have base but they are not as tinty as some can sound. When you plug in a good speaker or headset the sound is great. The internal MIC is fine for Skype calls or recording such as on ONENOTE.
13.SKYPE: Works fine. It was hard for the Skype to detect the camera. I got frustrated and tried to install my Logitech external webcam. When I did this, Skype then saw the HP cameras. In the Skype settings, video you can select the camera because you have a front and back. If you use a Bluetooth headset, first connect the headset using the windows Bluetooth icon, "Add a Device." If you wish to only listen and speak using your Bluetooth, you have to "disable" your default speakers, open the "horn" icon, right click on the "playback", select the speakers, right click, select disable. This will force the sound into your headset only. Then go into the Skype audio settings and choose the Bluetooth mic and speaker. The video camera works but you will need high speed to really get good video quality.
14.Battery Life: Last for 5 hrs. I can go to meetings and sit in coffee shops for hours until I need to plug in. Before with a laptop, I could only last 1-2 hrs.
15.Camera quality is fair. It doesn't get moving people as well. If it is a stationary item it does ok. The video works also. I get better quality on my SPRINT EVO. The camera is nice to capture something quick to add into a document.
So, this is how I use my tablet.
I go to 3 hr meetings, record information using the stylus or type using my foldout keyboard. I go to a preschool sites (evaluate safety and nutrition). Hook into their wireless or Tether to SPRINTEVO (haven't needed to yet), get reports, take photos of what I see if necessary, write notes on my ONENOTE, printpdf the report, send it to the teacher by email. She prints the document if necessary. Other instances, I can complete a surveymonkey as a report gathering tool and submit it. I have training video, I can show a teacher on the spot. I go to a coffee shop with free wireless, plug in my headset (Pandora), plug in my wireless mouse, pull out the Bluetooth keyboard and use office and answer emails. I could also make SKYPE Calls if needed. Go back to the office, plug into my screen (see below) and it becomes a regular computer. For movies, I use to copy my DVDs that I purchased with software and loaded them on to my portable hard drives and download the movies that I want to see. But I just watch online (remember flash).
Why buy this device if I have to pull out all of the extra gadget (keyboard, mouse). It's because of the weight. I can walk around with just the slate comfortably when I want or need to which you can't do with a netbook or laptop.
Workarounds
No VGA port: There is HDMI on the docking station. HP please find a spot on the device, then I don't need to carry the dock and preferably on the short side. I bought the HP HDMI to VGA converter for $39 in the HP Home section. It works with old VGA ports. You need the converter for VGA as you are going from digital back to analogue. But many projectors and TVs are HDMI or DVI (HDMI without the sound). You can get an adapter for HDMI to DVI for projectors too. You might need a 3.5 audio to cable out. I never use the speakers from a projector. I have external speakers which provide better quality or I feed into the AV System. Used the HDMI cable with a projector and it was beautiful. You could project your movies or use it as a large screen. I am sure if you were in a hotel, carry your HDMI and plug into the Flat screen, carry your Bluetooth keyboard and work from bed. Or show your personal movies for yourself or kids.
No Ethernet: I don't use my Ethernet much. Yes my Agency has this but doesn't let us plug our personal items into their system. There is a HP USB to ethernet adapter for $39 if this is a needed.
Stylus: You will need 4AAAA batteries. BEWARE; I scratched the screen with the stylus. It is a quarter inch scratch. Don't know how it happened. I don't see it when the screen is on.
Screen: Nice Glass. The case is designed to accommodate the cameras. I flip it around in the case when I want to stand the HP like a Teepee. The bummer is when you plug in and don't have the dock you have to prop it up against a bag. You can only rotate the screen on two sides where other tablets let your rotate to any side. It is true that the leather can get in the way on the side to move scroll bars. But learn how to use the "FLICK" setting and you don't need the scroll bars. I still use my key commands of CTRL + or - to increase or decrease the screen. The finger zoom is not as good as newer device.
Screen set up. Because your palm can rest on the bottom part of the screen, I set my windows taskbar on the top screen instead of the bottom so I don't open the Clock by accident. I also docked the INPUT panel on the task bar. When it is docked on the sides, it can block items. Learn how to go use your "Flick" settings which help you use your fingers on the tablet. Also, right click on the N Trig DuoSense Pen Icon in the taskbar tray, select properties. Here you can turn off the capacitive screen and use only the pen such as in ONENOTE or Windows JOURNAL. So you can rest your palm of your hand on the screen and it won't draw scribbly lines.
Overall, this was the best purchase technology wise that I have made in years. I have invested much to try out new tech gadgets. This does it all. It is not perfect in the touch screen interface but it is an improvement from the earlier tablets. Yes, it cost more ~$850 but I don't have to buy more apps and I can use what I have from my windows computers. In the end, it is what the tablet CAN DO that matters.
HP, you have a winner. I wish you went toe-to-toe with the IPAD, you could have punched hard! Don't do what Microsoft always does. Create something good and then let another company create and market another product off their original good creation. It's the size, screen, weight and operating system! If you don't like it, return it. It took me 2.5 months to get mine because they sold out. I am sure someone will want to buy it off you.
Conclusion:
Weight 1.5 lbs, battery life 5 hrs, no workaround apps, uses my current windows gadgets, prints to printers, usb and SD Memory, Outputs to projectors and monitors using HDMI, wireless, bluetooth, can tether to Phone hotspots. It truly replaces my Laptop for light Office work and entertainment...Read more›

Archos 70 - 8 GB Internet Tablet (Black) Review

Archos 70 - 8 GB Internet Tablet (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this device for 6 days and I've been very pleased with all aspects of it. I did a lot of research before buying and it has met all of my expectations. Best for those who already have some experience with the Android operating system.
Here is what I like:
It makes an excellent e-reader. I can use books from Barnes and Noble, Borders, Amazon, Google and my local library. It is a great PDF document reader and works great for comics as well.
It is very good internet browser. Flash capability isn't perfect yet, but having it in even a limited capacity opens up a lot more of the internet. I've been an iPod Touch/iPhone user for several years and I really like this device. The internet experience is superior.
Google integration. If you use Gmail and google apps, Android offers better capabilities than iOS devices. (Note, this does require a hack, but it is very easy to do).
Expandability. MicroSD, HDMI, USB. Archos doesn't control what I can and cannot do with this device.
Video playback. Excellent playback of local, network and internet video.
Form factor. I've played with an iPad and it's a fun device, but I like the size/weight of this device a lot better. It is more practical and easy to take with me. Much easier to hold for long periods of time when reading.
Battery life. Not iPad levels, but still very good.
What I don't like:
Future ability to upgrade. By only putting in 256MB of RAM, they have limited the ability of this device to Android 2.2, which means I will probably want the 2011 version, instead of upgrading this one. (I think they planned this)
Hacking is necessary. Because of limitations that Google puts on Android currently, it is necessary to hack the device to access it's full potential. This will ultimately damage the ability of new/inexperienced users to enjoy their Archos tablets.
Overall, I love this device and if you have used Android or if you are willing to do some research on websites like archosfans.com, you will love it as well!

All the functions of a computer: your apps, the Internet, video chat, your photos, music and videos actually fit inside your bag or your briefcase.

Best ARCHOS Design Yet

Samsung Galaxy Tab (T-Mobile) Review

Samsung Galaxy Tab (T-Mobile)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a current iPad owner who also uses the Droid X, I must say that after spending 15 minutes with this thing I absolutely love it. The size is fantastic in that its a signifcantly improved viewing experience over the 4.3 inch Droid X screen (which is also great) and it is easy to hold with one hand and navigate with the other - an added bonus is that it also fits in a suit coat pocket.
The Microsoft Exchange integration with email/calendar/contacts is seemless and allows for almost all of the functionality provided via a laptop. One of the drawbacks of the iPad is its poor integration with Outlook (couldn't delete, move emails while one a plane working offline - not a problem with the Tab).
The screen is gorgeous, speed is quick and the Google location services (GPS, Latitude, Maps, Place and the list goes on and on) are fantastic.
I would highly recommend this product.
Update - after 1 week of ownership, I love it even more. As someone who travels (4 cities over last 5 days), I'm considering leaving my notebook home on business travel with future trips. The benefits of the form factor can't be overstated - it fits in my jeans pocket when out casually and in my suit jacket during business. It also smartly switches from WiFi to 3G when a WiFi network is not within reach and vice versa (so that you don't unnecessarily consume data via your cellular carrier). I also watched a movie on my East to West coast trip - 3 hour and 13 minute move burned less than half the battery time. It's also great to be able to modify .xls documents when needed - seamless integration with outlook / attachments.
Absolutely love this thing...

Motorola XOOM Android Tablet (Verizon Wireless) Review

Motorola XOOM Android Tablet (Verizon Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First an acknowledgement: while waiting to receive my Xoom I nearly cancelled my order after the iPad 2 was announced. I had a hard time deciding between the Apple device and the Android (Motorola) device.
The main reason I chose to stick with the Xoom (and am glad I did) is the stock Android software and its multitasking function. The 3.0 software has a menu item at the bottom which allows you to swap between multi-tasked apps (similar to pressing/holding the Home button on an Android phone). Other factors in keeping the Xoom were microSD card slot (not yet active but hopefully soon via software update) and future 4G connectivity (there is a big delta between 3G (< 2 Mbps) and 4G (> 10 Mbps) speeds on Verizon). Note that if this device had any manufacturer bloatware on it (Motoblur) I would have chosen the Apple device. Yes, I hate bloatware.
With that said this is what I've found:
1. Once I logged in on the device most of the apps associated with my account (I own a Droid X) were automatically downloaded and installed. This was seamless; I did elect to uninstall a few apps based on not wanting them on the tablet. While I agree there are a limited number of apps built specifically for the tablet, most apps looked/ran fine on the tablet form. I noted there was more than one app that (until it gets updated for the tablet) ran well only in portrait (or landscape) mode. Kind of a bother but I'm patient; as an original Droid owner I saw the Android Market literally explode over a 3 month period.
2. There was some initial OS lag for the first hour while the apps were installed and my iSyncr app (wireless) was syncing my music library to the device from iTunes. This was not unexpected; once the initial onslaught of apps were installed/synced the device ran flawlessly. The OS is very smooth and fast.
3. I love the email and calendar apps; the layouts are optimized whether in the landscape or portrait modes. My wife runs a home based business and utilizes Google apps. I set up the corporate email client to sync with my work email. Both ran great and synced well; the interface with Google apps is superior. Note that I did not activate the 3G service (yet). I mainly use at the house (wireless) but this will be a great device to use on trips in the car so will likely either activate 3G/4G or tether to my X. It's interesting to note that often my Xoom dings that I have new email/calendar events from work prior to my work notebook computer which is tied (via my home internet connection) directly to my corporate network via VPN.
4. There are a good set of accessories for the device from Motorola:
- I bought the speaker dock to use in our kitchen as a way to charge and listen to music in the kitchen (also nice to have a net surfing tool in the kitchen). This is where multitasking and widgets come in handy. We can see weather, email status, calendar agenda etc all from one home screen. Streaming Pandora radio in the kitchen is very nice and convenient. Speaker quality is good but don't expect much power output. With the dishwasher running we need to turn volume up to near max to hear music well. The device is pricey. If you have the extra funds I'd recommend it.
- The travel cover is nice and functional. I saw some reviews complaining that it was plastic. I agree it's overpriced but it performs the function I want it to which is to protect it while travelling. The ability to use it as a stand is a small bonus (I haven't use it yet as a stand).
5. Agree/disagree with other reviewers relating to the sound quality of built in speakers. Agree that they are poor quality due to pointing backward. They actually sound very good (were they pointing toward you). For me, this was one of the items that led to a < 5 star rating. The speakers are adequate for watching a YouTube video or listening to a Google Voice mail but inadequate for enjoying music. Bottom line - if I want the device for listening to music I either (1) dock it (see item 4 above) or (2) put in a pair of Ultimate Ear headphones (problem solved).
6. Multitasking is easier to navigate on Honeycomb. There are multiple new benefits from 3.0 when it comes to multitasking. Do not underestimate the value of true multitasking on the tablet. This feature makes using the Android version of a tablet most similar to using a desktop computer (most folks who use desktop/laptop computers will take multitasking for granted).
Conclusion: I like the purchase. I'd do it again. This device was probably rushed to market a bit (4G and microSD not active) but I'm glad it was. I'd prefer to have it now and get the additional functionality later (better late than never). While there are multiple news apps in the tablet portion of the app store already, I'd really like to have access to 'The Daily' which is already on the iPad.
Lack of 5 stars due to:
1) Speaker quality (although I really have nothing to compare to - not sure how good tablet speakers are supposed to be).
2) Lack of microSD and Flash support at launch (two features it will have versus iPad).
3) Weight - again, I'm not sure how much I'd expect this to weigh (with 10.1" higher-than-ipad resolution screen and all the other features). This is a great tool to surf the web and get work done while parked in front of the TV. If you read in bed holding the device over your head while lying down you'll get a workout.
Final thought: if you're on a tight budget and can tether with a cell phone I'd be tempted to wait until the wireless only version comes out to save a couple hundred bucks.UPDATE: I've owned the Xoom since it came out - time for an update:
1. Battery life is great. I do not do a lot of video intensive operations although my kids watch streaming movies from Amazon Prime and yet I haven't had to charge it prior to the end of a full day's use. We do have the speaker dock so it tends to get stored there when not in use which likely helps with battery capacity. Bottom line - no concerns with battery life.
2. The market is expanding. I have kids of all age groups (4 from age 19 to 5). They have pretty much claimed my Xoom. My younger daughter loves the books available from Ocean Media - they range from $.99 to $3.99 and are very interactive which help with reading and learning. She stays engaged with learning longer as a result of the device.
3. Overall Honeycomb comment - good and getting better. There has been one software update which has helped with a few tweaks. Still no microSD support although I'm doing fine (so far) with the 32 gb internal. Overall, my wife and I love the functionality of widgets. Nice to customize the home screen for one view update of weather, email, calendar items for the next few days.
