ibiza Rhapsody H1A030P 30 GB Wi-Fi/MP3 Player by Haier (Pink) Review

ibiza Rhapsody H1A030P 30 GB Wi-Fi/MP3 Player by Haier (Pink)
Average Reviews:

As were many others, I was reluctant to purchase an MP3 player from a company that normally manufactures microwave ovens, dehumidifiers, and other home appliances. I watched reviews and comments about the ibiza for a month before jumping in. I've owned several hard drive MP3 players in the last year, culminating in an Archos 504 WiFi that was working pretty well for me until Urge and Rhapsody merged, and I lost a compatible subscription based music service.
The Haier Ibiza is the first player I've owned that hits every major requirement I have. Subscription based music with a broad, deep catalog, unprotected music, unrestricted WiFi, bluetooth, a reasonable, quick, well designed UI, etc.
Additionally, the development team at VariaMobile, the folks who are developing the software for this device have taken a very open, community driven approach to making this device better.
Downside? There are no accessories yet, (specifically a docking station). The player cannot be used while connected USB to your computer, (my previous Archos models would prompt, asking if it should connect, or simply charge).
Haier and Varia have put together a potent combination of features that more than justify the price, (some have complained it is too expensive). Anyone looking for a player that does music, subscriptions, and pod-casts will not be disappointed. I haven't even dug into the video features yet.

VIP Watch Cell Phone Stainless Steel Wide 1.5" Screen FM Review

VIP Watch Cell Phone Stainless Steel Wide 1.5 Screen FM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is a rare individual that so objects to having a phone in their pocket that they would go outside the accepted norms presented to you by commercials, their peers, and most notably the the narrow niche that the marketing people at phone service providers have pigeonholed the North American market. What's not to love about an overblown smart phone coupled with a 2 year contract? Well, if you're addicted to Facebook, then you will never understand, and this phone isn't for you. If not, well, you may appreciate the utility that this item presents.
So having a rare moment of tech geekiness, I evaluated the state of the mobile phone industry, and decided one day that somewhere in the world, a watch phone must exist. Seeing as I don't get a kick out of smart phones like iPhones or even Androids, (which practically labels me a crackpot) I decided I wanted one. My search led me to this model, which seems to have a different name every where you find it.
Opening up the package was like many other electronics, though there's a few niceties included which really increases the value of the purchase. You're given an extra battery, which you will likely need to keep handy if you like keeping Bluetooth powered on. You're given a BT headset, which is great to have for this watch for normal everyday conversations. One thing of note, however: having a mono headset for a watch that offers you A2DP stereo output is missing out on a great feature.
The watch boots up quickly. I was traumatized at one time by a Blackberry so this was important.
There's nothing to dislike about the home screen. There are some seemingly useless icons along the top, and some old skool Nokia-looking font offering you the menu and name lists. I would love to change the font, though I think that is impossible. It does at least tell you if Bluetooth is connected.
The first item that I scrutinized was the touch screen. Navigating a 1.5" screen is tricky, considering your finger is about 1/4 the size of it. This is made simple, however, with a retractable stylus that lives in the wrist band. The touchscreen is straighforward, not over sensitive, and a 'click' requires putting a decent amount of pressure on the screen. This all adds up to a very useable touch screen. Believe it or not, you can get along using just your finger if necessary, though for long-term use, you'd better have the stylus.
The next item for inspection: text input. I make about 20 calls a month, but send about 200 texts. You have the option for handwriting recognition or a little keyboard. The keyboard is amazingly useable, however due to the small size, you'll have a lot of trouble entering text while walking, or while riding on a city bus. These are situations where the handwriting recognition will work, though its a lot slower. The keyboard isn't perfect though.. You can enter numbers easily, but to switch back to letters requires menu navigation. It needs work in the next release but is useable.
Next item of scrutiny was the speakerphone. In many ways this watch is not a thoroughbred; its a phone that was turned into a watch. For instance, if one has no headset attached, answering the phone will result in a quiet squeaky voice talking to you, that cannot be heard unless you hold the phone to your head. Eventually, however, the wise user will find the 'Handsfree' soft key that will go to speakerphone. Unfortunately, while the speakerphone is loud enough, the quality is terrible. This is a headset phone only, unless you want to hold your watch up to your ear.
Bluetooth connectivity is a bit buggy when connecting to my Jabra BT80. I believe the issue is that the headset will present 3 bluetooth formats to the watch phone simultaneously: ACRPT, Handsfree, and A2DP Stereo output. If one was to bond the two together and then make a call, there is a bad connection. One has to disconnect the Stereo output using the Bluetooth menu when using the regular handsfree profile, and vice versa. If one knows to do this, then it is manageable, though I worry how a less techie user would respond to this. If one does not expect to use the stereo feature it would not be an issue. Again, more work to be done in the next release.
Now on to the fun stuff. I use the audio player quite a bit, and this is made easy because of the 16 GB micro SD card that I have installed. I have loaded up my whole music selection on there. The sound quality through my stereo headset is great. The combination of watch, jukebox, and headset would be enough to make this watch worth it. Nitpicks: The player does not acknowledge folders. Every song has to be in the "My Music" directory. An annoying problem is that there is no way to designate play order or use a playlist. One is stuck with whatever play order the player comes up with, and the playlist file is in a mystifying proprietary format which cannot be edited.
Video and camera: They work and they seem to have a number of features, like white balance, banding, and lighting filters which sound like they'd give you better results. I have not pulled any pictures or video off onto the PC to see how they look.
MMS works and is functional. One major problem: one is restricted in the size of message downloads to somewhere around 500 Kb, regardless of the size of the memory card.
The watch also has organizer functions which include a Calendar, To-do list, Alarm, and Ebook reader. They are there, though I wish there were a few more. For instance, a general 'text document' would be very useful for taking lists. The watch also features an FM radio, though it requires the wired headset to work. I don't love FM enough to carry the headset with me, so it isn't useable for me.
The watch technically will do WAP internet off of GPRS. This has functioned for me, but is of low quality. You'll find only a minority of web sites will function with this phone.
My last nitpick. I paid $180.00 for a watch with no 'second' hand!
All in all, it is easy to see that many features could be better on this watch. The hardware seems to be impressively useable and well-designed but the software is lacking. I'd be interested in developing apps for this.
With all the minor problems, this watch will fit the needs of some users perfectly.
I would like to give a shout out to Victor International, who I bought this watch from. My first phone had a display problem a few days after receiving it. The good folks at Victor replaced it quickly with no questions asked. Thanks!

iriver SPINN 8 GB Video MP3 Player (Silver) Review

iriver SPINN 8 GB Video MP3 Player (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've got the 8gb SPINN, and have had it long enough to write a long review on my blog (www.4dthinker.blogspot.com). I've also got an iPod Touch and a Samsung P2 for comparison. The SPINN's firmware is still buggy. Using Bluetooth (limited to headphone pairing only) the sound drops out, slows down, or gets choppy after 10 minutes of use or if trying to use any other function (photo or text) on the SPINN. It's as if bluetooth steals all the SPINN's processor cycles. The interface is limited to one font, and that font is hard to see on many backgrounds. There is a Fonts folder, so hopefully there are more fonts available. While playing music the album art only shows up as a tiny image on the big screen. Very poor utilization of the screen. In photos there is no rotate options, and trying to zoom any photo gives me an error message.
The SPINN is firmware upgradeable, and hopefully there will be an upgrade soon. There are a few THEMES available, but none work well with the single font supplied.

The best thing I like about this cellphone is its loudness: built-in speaker is loud and speakerphone is loud. This helps a lot if you're in a noisy restraunt (reason I dumped my old cellphone).
Pluses:
1. Well designed music player UI and dedicated buttons.
2. Loud speaker for playing music.
3. Standard 1/8" mini jack for headphones.
4. Solid buttons, crisp display
5. Very small, stylish
Minuses:
1. Short battery life -- must charge almost every night.
2. Camera is fair in quality.
3. No 3G

First let me say, the seller was just fine. The product however, is not so fine. Although it said it is an upgraded model, which made me think it would work well, is a joke. The unit is hard to use, not user friendly in the least, and is down right slow to respond. It comes with a stylus to use to start your application. It takes several hits to make the application even open. I never could get it to actually download any songs after 3 hours I was ready to throw it through the nearest window. I returned the unit, and for $20.00 more bought a Sony Walkman.
This is not a good device to try to use unless you are a computer geek. Even then I imagine you will have some issues with the performance since it doesn't seem to be able to connect to anything. It's not cheap although for almost $80.00 I was surely expecting something with a better OS. Save your money and get either the Ipod or Zune.

Netgear EVA700 Digital Entertainer Review

Netgear EVA700 Digital Entertainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I bought this unit, I tried the D-Link DSM-520 for about a month before giving up. This unit is identical to the DSM in function with one BIG difference-- it is stable! My advise to those not wanting to tinker- skip this technology for a year or so, others read on...
Install
~~~~
I hooked it up to a wireless router and PC with a few external hard drives and it works (almost) flawlessly. First of all, like others said, do NOT install the software that it comes with and also forget Intel Viv technology installs. Just install one of the free (or almost free) software like TVersity (my fav.), Wizd or Twonkyvision. However, except for Wizd, you can't search for a particular album/artist/genre. You have to scroll through menu after menu to find a movie/song/photo.
Media
~~~~~
I am currently streaming a few hundred CDs in FLAC (lossless format) which is noticeably better than the very best MP3 format. For DVDs, I simply have the server software pointed to the Folders that have the DVD (VOB) files. The player does a very good job of picking up subtitles automatically too. I have NOT installed the photo folder as I find the usage completely useless for my needs. I shoot 6MP raw format images. I can't see myself browsing through tens of thousands of images and then waiting for 1 minute for an image to load up!
Conclusion
~~~~~~~~~
All in all, a good system for those that are not intimidated by network setups and server programs but want an uncluttered music system and (almost) instant access to movies, music and photos.
iriver SPINN 4 GB Video MP3 Player (Silver) Review
iriver SPINN 4 GB Video MP3 Player (Silver)
If you want a player that'll give you way more than what you paid for, look no longer! Given the one set back is the company, "iRiver" which sounds like it might be a cheap Chinese ipod knock-off, iRiver is actually a very good company and has and continues to produce great mp3 players.
First off, the player looks great, and feels great. The spinney thing is basically divine inspiration. Menu navigation is intuitive. My one problem is they dont do as much with cover flow / album art as they do on say the ipod touch. But hey, its MUCH less expensive.
AWESOME screen. Just beautiful. Its AMOLED, which Ive heard is better than you're everyday mp3 screen. and its 3.3 inches! AMAZING! ... but wait, there's more... its also TOUCH SCREEN! woah... The touch screen is a little limited but its still very high quality and you CAN play flash games on this thing and use the touch screen + the other buttons on the device for controls.
What more to say... oh yeah, good file support and VERY good sound quality... pair it with a WIRELESS (it also supports bluetooth) pair of Motorola S305 and you're in business.
Text reader, works great! The Radio is ok, its not like Sansa clip quality but its ok. You can also record radio, AND voice. The interface for this is very easy to use. Oh, and its only 4gb, that was a bit of a bummer... but who cares? youre not paying hundreds of dollars.
In the end the iRiver is a GREAT little player. It used to cost over 200 dollars, but now at the price its at it cant be beat. Although its only 4 gb, thats still space for a LOT of games, videos, and songs. At the price its at it is the PERFECT Christmas / birthday gift. Get it, i promise you won't regret it!
My previous phone was a Nokia 6600. It had a slow interface for 2006 and come on, I wanted to try somethingn new.Initially, I had planned on exploring my chances of buying a Treo but due to the rates, I gave up my plan. Without much pondering, I went and purchased a Sony Ericsson W810i. Now, it's been four weeks. Let me just give you a brief run thru of features, pros and cons.
Features
1. This phone is an mp3 player. This phone is a torch/semi flash light(with an SOS signal that can be configured). This phone has flash capability and further doubles up into a digital camera. Overall, it saves a lot of space to use this phone instead of just going out with a standalone mp3 player or/and a digital camera
2. The interface is fast. It takes around 8 seconds to get an auto focus and click a picture using the camera. I'll try and explain - to come out of the screensaver you need half a second, to activate camera using the shortcut it takes 3 seconds, a further 2 seconds for auto focus and an additional 1 second to click you picture. Overall,8 seconds to click one image.You can browse thru pictures very quickly. It's around 7 times faster than my Nokia. Images can be clicked in sepia, black and white, solarise(kinda yellowey), negative and normal modes. Brightness can be reduced within the click of a button. I noticed grains on images of larger size. I don't recommend using the flash camera unless you really must. Plus while clicking a video, the light goes on and off, if the flash light is turned on.
3. The build quality on the phone is both good and bad. I love the keypad and it is a major improvement from the 800i and sundry walkman phones. It took me three days to get used to the keypad. The dictionary like function on the phone keeps a track of all the words you spell. So they're definitely there the next time around. The front of the phone seems to appear too plastic. Especially the silver scroll keys and sometimes can make your phone look like a dummy piece. The sound speakers are situated on the backside of the phone and can be used conveniently even when the phone is upside down. You can insert your memory stick pro cards even when the phone is switched on. There is NO CAMERA SHUTTER like the previous installment of this phone (800i) The power button is placed most effectively just like the volume buttons on the right side of the phone which can be used for a host number of features.
4. The internal memory of this phone is 22mb and the accompanied card contains 512mb worth of memory. The usable memory,however, is only 431mb. Upon connecting to the pc, both are instantly recognized and act as removable drives on the "my computer" icon. The accompanied software is almost brilliant. I loved "Disc2phone" and there is so much more I keep discovering about the other programs. Despite lacking an English Manual, I found I didnt need one because I don't know too many people who would buy a sony ericsson phone and not be techies in their own rights who like to configure things on their own.
5. The bundled earphones are sublime. I cannot beleive the sound on these. They cancel all the noises in a room and it's a pleasure listening to beethoven playing away or Enya's mesmerising voice or even Tool's prog metal for that matter. The speakers are satisfactory and could have been louder. If used as a stand alone mp3 player with earphones, the phone would stand for around 6-7 hours.Playing the music without using earphones can eat up battery depending on the volumes of course. It supports m4a, mp3 and aac formats(and a few other formats)
6. The messages memory of the phone is limited to around 150+ messages and that is a big blunder. Despite having a 512mb of external storage the phone cannot accommodate a mere 200 messages. The size of notes is limited and you need to make a second note to carry on. Bluetooth transfers to Samsung,Nokia phones runs at 20kbps while it's a consistent 40kbps for Sony Ericsson phones. Very good for transferring media.
Pros
- It can be called an ipod replacement. I don't use mine quarter as much as I used to. This is owing to the absolutely brilliant earphones that sit within your ear and help you celebrate your time.
- I love how the phone slides into a digital camera. Good build quality for the particular feature.
- Good standby, saves battery, easy to work with 50% brightness. Even when I reduce brightness from 100% to 50% (lowest possible) there is hardly any noticeable difference on the screen. The keypad is much lighter but that's hardly noticeable.
- Fast processor, super graphics and wallpaper options, includes a good browser, calendar, good default themes
- The accompanied torch can be used to change a flat tire and can be switched on for 25mins even when the remaining battery is only 15%. (tried and tested)
- Good keypad(KEY FEATURE), good playlist configuring options
- Excellent software for the phone, mp3s can transferred at variable bit-rates without taking too long
- Excellent,fast log, the phones keeps track off the last ten numbers you've messaged and keeps them around for easy usage
- It's easy to store numbers cause the phone prompts to save numbers when a call from an unknown number ends
- Great handsfree
- There is a memory stick converter (The longer ones used in cameras) and that is a handy thing
- The MACRO mode helps in copying handwritten/type written documents using the camera
Cons
- too plastic, looks a bit boring too soon, screen can be scratched if no touchscreen is present
- the accompanied tones for messages is sad, the message memory is very limite (Big DEMERIT) and the size of a note is limited
- Call quality is not as good as can be
- sometimes it takes over a minute for the phone to recognize it has been plugged into a USB slot
- the accompanied FM radio needs to be in place to avoid screechiness in sound and proper volume
- Even though the phone provides 512mb worth of external memory, only 431mb is useable. Ideally, i'd have liked a one gig card so I could have doubled on my usage.
- Not enough upgradations over the W800i. People can settle for that phone because it has a slightly better talk life
- IT HAS NO ENGLISH MANUAL
- noticeable grains on 2megapixel images
Conclusion,
All though I am very happy with this phone, I cant help but throw a fit over the limited message storage, you can save messages onto your pc but come on, who's gonna do that?
Buy this phone if you like what you read. Not enough reasons to upgrade for 800i owners. BUT this phone has more appeal than 800i and has better more smooth graphics. There is a much better display and there is an improvement of 25% which I just noticed.However, unlike the 550i , there are no three way speakers and that makes "Stereo Widening" impossible.
Overall rating - 7/10
Very little to complain about,really
Good luck,fellow techies
The Sony Ericsson W800 was a big hit. Now, here comes the sequel, the W810. All the same great Walkman features are here, along with robust phone functions, but now you get quad-band GSM, a larger and brighter display, and perhaps most importantly, support for EDGE high speed data. In addition to a powerful and easy-to-use Walkman music player, the W810 boasts a 2-megapixel auto-focus camera with flash, a Memory Stick Duo card slot, Bluetooth, and a speakerphone. Simply put, this baby's loaded.
Design The W810 follows a long tradition of beautifully designed and crafted phones from Sony Ericsson. The same candy-bar style that graced the W800 is here, as is the horizontally-oriented camera unit on the back of the phone, allowing you to hold the phone just as you would a camera when you're taking pictures. The W810's screen sports 176 x 220 pixel resolution with support for 262,000 colors. Quick access buttons below the screen make it easy to control the phone's Walkman music features, while a five-way center button controls most of the phone's menus and features.
The W810 contains 20 MB of embedded memory, but as mentioned, a Memory Stick Duo slot is provided, and it also supports Pro Duo cards, giving you storage capacities of 2 GB and beyond. Of course, there's also a port for the phone's included stereo headset. USB and infrared data ports are provided, as well, and the phone supports USB mass storage so you can simply plug the phone into your computer and drag and drop files into the phone's memory using the included Disc2Phone PC application. To top it all off, the W810's camera flash can double as a flashlight.
Calling Features The W810's phone book can hold up to 1000 contacts with multiple entries per contact. A call list remembers your most recent missed, received and dialed calls. The phone's voice activated dialing makes calling your contacts as easy as saying their names, while the built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are included and you can also use MP3 and AAC music files as ringtones. A cool application called Music DJ even lets you mix your own ringtones. Meanwhile, picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. For those times you want to keep things discreet, there's a vibrate ringer mode. And because the W810 is Bluetooth-enabled, you can use a variety of headsets and handsfree kits for total wireless freedom when you're on the go.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools If you're looking for a mobile productivity partner, the W810 has you covered. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, and sound via MMS messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging possibilities. The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web Browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the W810, as it supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the high speed EDGE data protocol. When used with your carrier data plan and the phone's Bluetooth or USB data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the W810, including a voice memo recorder, a to-do list, a calculator, a calendar and an alarm clock. The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard, which lets you synchronize your PC-based calendar, contacts, notes and tasks with your W810.
Imaging and Entertainment The W810 is a Walkman phone, and that means it offers a great mobile music experience. Load up your favorite songs in MP3 or AAC format on a memory card and listen to your heart's content. The user-friendly music player application also includes a "Music Mode" that shuts down the phone functions so you can listen on an airplane or anytime you don't want to accept calls. Meanwhile, Digital Mega Bass and stereo widening combine to enhance your listening experience. There's even an FM radio for catching the big game or your favorite stations. The radio also supports reception of digital song information from radio stations.
And don't forget about that powerful 2-megapixel camera, which features something most camera phones lack -- autofocus. Finally, you can get consistently great shots from any distance, shots that rival the quality of a dedicated digital camera. The camera also features an LED flash and a 4x digital zoom, and it can capture video, as well. Dedicated controls on the side of the unit will make you forget you're holding a phone in your hand.
And what about gaming? This phone is definitely geared for the mobile fun fanatic, as it supports widescreen and 3D games. The W810 comes preloaded with several games and more are downloadable from Sony Ericsson.
Vital Statistics The Sony Ericsson W810 weighs 3.49 ounces and measures 3.94 x 1.81 x .77 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 8 hours of digital talk time, and up to 350 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.
Nokia N810 Portable Personal Communicator/Internet Tablet/Wi-Fi Pocket PC/MP3/MP4/Audio/Video Player with 4.3" LCD Widescreen/Qwerty Keyboard/Webcam/Built-in Microphone/GPS Navigator Review
Nokia N810 Portable Personal Communicator/Internet Tablet/Wi-Fi Pocket PC/MP3/MP4/Audio/Video Player with 4.3 LCD Widescreen/Qwerty Keyboard/Webcam/Built-in Microphone/GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
I have owned my N810 (affectionately named N8 - or Nate) for about 6 months now and it has become invaluable to me. These are the activities with which I use it:
- communication, using Google Voice, or Skype
- receiving and sending email, either via included email client, or web-based email
- web browsing
- watching and saving YouTube videos
- tracking and mapping via GPS unit
- taking notes
- games/entertainment with OS2008 games, or using Palm Emulator and my favorite old Palm Pilot games
- listening to music; sound quality is EXCELLENT for a hand-held (and I'm a musician, and picky)!
- recording voice notes
- taking photos and making small videos for online use
- keeping recipes; its small size make it excellent for reading in my tiny kitchen...and I can listen to music at the same time!
- reading eBooks
- text messaging via Google Voice/wifi
There are only a couple of cons that I have found so far. The front-facing camera, intended for use in video conferencing, makes photography tricky at best. This is acceptable to me, though, since it was never meant to replace a digital camera. The other is that the O/S will require a learning curve for the average point-and-click Windows user. While the device is definitely easy to pick up and use with the installed software, and loading new programs from either the Nokia website or the maemo site using the application manager, most more detailed tasks will require a certain amount of learning for most; in short, it ain't Windows :).
There are numerous other uses and apps for this device. Even after 6 months I feel I've hardly scratched the surface of its possibilities. It is always on the road with me, has replaced my laptop on weekend trips, and replaced my more cumbersome bedtime books and magazines. It has saved me money in this way, and also in cell phone/texting costs; it has already paid for itself - probably twice over.
In short, N8 has replaced both my Zune and my Palm Pilot, and become itself an irreplaceable part of my life.
JBL On Tour Portable Speaker System ( Black ) Review
JBL On Tour Portable Speaker System ( Black )
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
So far I've used the On Tour with my 8GB Sandisk Sansa - they make a perfect pair (looks too). The speakers are clear sounding, with pleasant bass and clear mid-highs (not tinny). They are used when we're traveling and based in a hotel room, and are a perfect alternative to headphones. Since they are not boom box sized, they're not going to fill a large room with sound, but for a small to mid-sized room they work just fine. I used to pack an old pair of computer speakers - these give me similar performance without the bulk.
I nixed a star because the AC adapter has to be stored separately, and has that thin wire that twists up too easily. Additionally JBL should have included a pouch for the AC adapter, but I'll improvise a solution. Overall highly recommended.
Enjoy high quality audio from a variety of devices including the iPod, iPod mini, MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), laptops, and most portable devices. This design provides a full, rich frequency response from the lowest bass to the highest highs. Signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 80dB. Voltage input is 100-230 VAC, 50-60 Hz, for use around the world.
Archos 5 16GB Internet Tablet with Android (Black) Review
Archos 5 16GB Internet Tablet with Android (Black)
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
I previously owned the 605 WiFi and the Vision 3. This is a huge step up. PROS: great sound, excellent video playback, very responsive screen (especially for a resistive touch), G-Sensor and Accelerometer works great, Browser is awesome, games run great, etc. Now I updated to the newest firmware only to find that youtube has not been fixed. But here's the thing...I used a hack to install marketplace and now Youtube works great. Strange?
CONS: proprietary plugs, too many accessories that you have to buy to get full experience, charge time is kind of extreme, does not come with marketplace. it has their own version. gets lots of fingerprints!
They almost messed this one up. they are so close i can taste it. Every year they release a amazing play on paper...but when you use it...you find that certain features may or may not work. or work half a**. This is very close. In october they will be releasing ever better players that include so much more including built in camera :-). It's not bad...i still prefer it over the iPod touch. especially since it will sync with nearly any player. not just itunes. works with Winamp and Windows Media player. Another cool thing is that if you have album art...it will import it. very cool. There are two versions of the Archos 5. one with android and one without. It was definitely a good idea to go WITH android. It's almost impossible to screw up android. Having owned the iPod Touch, iPhone, Archos 605, and more....I can honestly say...this one isn't bad. especially for the price. Wish it had more space though. 16gb isn't enough for me. but hey...it comes with the SD slot too so you can add up to 32gb. awesome!
Panasonic SC-HC55 Compact Stereo System Review
Panasonic SC-HC55 Compact Stereo System
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
I purchased this, and I think it's a great system. Great sound, and the ability to open the iPod and CD sections with a hand wave is a cool feature. The design is slick, and I like the thin size of it. I've played around with the Internet radio too. Some people will balk at having to buy the vTuner app, but if you're not going to use Internet radio, skip buying it. Of course, if you're not using Internet radio, you may want to look into the SC-HC35, which costs less, and has the same basic function as this unit.
The only real issue I have with this unit is that it seems to be designed for the iPod Touch or the iPhone, as opposed to the iPod Classic. When skipping to the next track, there are times when the system will fast forward about 5 seconds, instead of moving to the next track. This happens about every 5 or 6 tracks.
Aside from that small gripe, this really is a nice system.
NEW Version Ultra-thin Quad-band Watch Mobile Phone FM/MP3/MP4 2M Camera Review
NEW Version Ultra-thin Quad-band Watch Mobile Phone FM/MP3/MP4 2M Camera
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
This is the first time I have considered or used a watch phone.
I want to start out by saying the support behind this phone is far above average. I say this because my phone in fact broke down on me.
The people selling this out of Newport News, gave me the option of refunding or replacing and it won't cost me a dime. I am opting to replace and here's why.
-When the phone worked, it was great. It took a bit to figure it out because the user manual that comes with it is a little vague. A quick email with some direct questions cleared up all my questions and I started using all the functions.
-The first function is the phone itself. I used a Motorola H720 Bluetooth device with it because I hate constantly wearing a bluetooth device in my ear. The advantage this paticular ear piece has is it is instantly activated as soon as you open the mic boom. I like that, I can feel the buzz of a phone call on my wrist, look at my wrist to see who is calling, pull out my BT device, open the boom, hit the button and talk all in seconds.
-Most of the time, (at least 95% of the time), the reception was very clear. When it is not it was hard for me to say if it was the phone or AT&T. When the reception was not so good, you could still communicate with some light static. I've had Samsung phones that gave me far more heartache than that.
-Here is an advantage you don't normally think about. You can set the phone to a vibrate mode, it is sitting directly on your wrist. Your not going to miss a call because you couldn't feel or even hear the vibration, you will feel it every single time because it is directly on your skin. There is rarely a need to activate the ring tone. You will not miss phone calls and not disturb anyone by a irritating ring tone. That is the biggest advantage in my opinion.
-The camcorder; It works and it is easy to operate. I can't think of any practical use for that but that is just me. It is entertainment at the very least.
-The video player can be used to play stuff from You-Tube and other media sources, one thing about that is, you must download a program (free) to convert the video from almost any source to play it on your watch. You can download a movie if you so desired. You have to do that with your computer.
-The cameria; pretty much the same as the phone. It's easy to operate and the picture viewer is easy to use. If you can't view the picture, there are tons of free programs to convert the picture to a JPEG format which the phone uses.
-The link to the computer; It's easy! The cable that hooks into your power adaptor can be connected directly into a USB port into your computer. The watch will do several things but the two I myself have used it for was a mass storage device and to use the computer to provide power to the phone. I do not know if you can receive phone calls while hooked into the computer.
-The other way you can transfer data between the phone and computer is use the mini-sd card with an SD adapter (you have to buy one). That also means you can use more than 2GB of data but I never had the need to do so. It is far easier just to use the cable provided with the watch.
-The touch screen; I am not a fan of the touchscreen. This one feels more ruggard than other touch screens I have used in the past. Myself, I can use my fingers to punch in numbers and I missed a number maybe 1 out of 20 times. It was easier than I thought to use. If you hate touch screens, than this phone vs others has a keypad that you can use your fingers to operate. That as I see it can prolong the useful life of the phone. As the touchscreen wears out, you can use the keypad to accomplish making a phone call. If you buy a touchscreen only watch phone, I wouldn't think it would last very long. I am no expert on the lifetime of watch cell phones.
-So who wouldn't like this phone or couldn't get good use out of it? If you have small wrists, sorry the phone will go all over the place on you. I don't think you can go down to Walmart and get a smaller wristband for it but I could be wrong. If your eyes are bad and glasses don't help, forget it. You won't see a thing. If you have normal vision or vision that is corrected to normal, you should have no problem.
-If you are hard of hearing, forget trying to use the loudspeaker mode. Without a bluetooth device, you'll never really hear anything and you'll want to "hurt something" out of fustration.
-Remember, the advantage of this phone is to use a bluetooth and never depend on having to pull out a phone. All can be done in a quiet, polite mode. If you go to a lot of meetings, or work for the Army like I do, this has it's advantages. You can feel the buzz during a meeting look at your watch politely and make a decision if the phone call is important enough for you to leave the meeting or disrupt it. I just like the the fact that I don't have to pull out the phone to see who is calling. A quick flick of my wrist reveals that and just as quick I can pull out my Bluetooth, put it in my ear, and be talking before the answer mode picks up.
Anyways, if you are looking at this phone, I think it is the best one out there. It is also a unlocked, quad-band phone. If you don't know what that means, "here goes". That means, if you are in Korea, Japan, China or other places in Asia you can buy a sim-card and use this. If you are in Germany, or almost anywhere in Europe, buy a sim-card and you are talking. If you are in Iraq, this phone will work the same rules apply. Get it? It can be used almost anywhere.
The bottom line for those that skipped directly down is: "I like it and think it is worth the cost". Look around and I think you will find, this one is superior to the others that are out there.
UPDATE 6/17/10:
I have my replacement phone. I really love it.
As far as the phone part and watch part goes, it works flawlessly. As far as the other features go, I am still learning it as I go.
One feature I really like is the fact I can put a picture on the phone's wallpaper and still have the time on it. Another feature that surprised me is that you can use the phone as a webcam. Think of how useful that can be using "skype" at the airport when you pull out your laptop and want to talk to your loved one. I really appreciate that feature and that changes the webcam feature from entertainment only to something I can really use.
The bottom line is this: The watch phone lives up to it's name and purpose. The advantage of a watch phone is, you never have to pull out your phone to see who is calling. A quick flick of your wrist and it's done. The second big advantage is you do not need to hear this phone. You can put it on vibrate and feel it every single time as it sits directly on your skin. Think of the advantages...
Warning: If you buy this, then get a bluetooth that connects fast if your not going to keep it in your ear. I have the Motorola H720. I can put it out of my pocket flip the boom and it is connected, "just like that". I love it!!! The bluetooth that comes with the watchphone really doesn't work in the way I just described. It is a stereo headset. I haven't played with it enough to determine how I want to use it.
The only thing I would change from when I first wrote this review is, the phone is far more reliable than I expected. When the first one broke I had my doubts, but this one really works and lives up to my expectations.
When they come out with an updated version of this, I plan to be checking it out.
Cowon S9 16 GB Video MP3 Player with Touchscreen (Chrome/Black) Review
Cowon S9 16 GB Video MP3 Player with Touchscreen (Chrome/Black)
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
The sound quality of this device is better than any mp3 player I've ever used before. Even with no equalizer changes the sound quality is better than most mp3 players out there.
But using a preset equalizer setting (BBE) I can notice a huge change in the sound quality of this device, the sound becomes clearer and warmer.
The user interface can be changed for a custom interface created by yourself or other users. I've been using a custom interface that really shows off the AMOLED screen.
The screen is incredible, I've compared it to that of the Ipod touch's screen and the Ipod doesn't even come close to the beauty of this screen.
As expected the screen is a fingerprint magnet, but you can clean it off with your shirt of a microfiber cloth. A screen protector is not needed unless you want to be extremely protective of the device, the Corning Gorilla glass on the screen that is used is scratch resistant, but a screen protector would help with fingerprints.
The biggest downside I had with this mp3 player was that it did not support Audible's audio format, but a few days ago a new firmware with Audible support was released.
Outstanding performance on all levels and loaded to the gills with every feature you could possibly want. At long last someone finally did it right! The only two things this little wonder doesn't do is voice record, or tune in AM radio.
Sound quality: Outstanding! So good in fact that you may notice some of the imperfections of your recordings/files that you may not have noticed in your other player/s. It's output is very full and clean across the entire sound spectrum. The 5 band user adjustable EQ is quite effective as it actually has some gain instead of just attenuating every band that's not maxed out as many others do. Also worth nothing is that it has the best S/N ratio of any PMP currently available.
Line in recording: Duel VU meters and an adjustable recording level as well as the ability to code in CD quality PCM (as well as several levels of WMA) make for a recordist's dream come true.
Battery: Decent run time. It's also user replaceable, but not that easy to replace on the fly as the battery has wires and a plug and the access door is held on with a small screw.
FM: More sensitive and selective than most other PMPs. Pulls in fringe stations with ease. Local stations do not overload at all. Less than great signals can be cleaned up do to the ability to manually switch to mono. Setting and recalling presets (as well as recording) is a breeze. It even displays RDS information form stations that transmit it.
Video: Good picture quality and sound. Video line out works well and has about the same quality as a well recorded on good tape EP or LP mode VHS..i.e not the best, but not half bad.
Photo: again good quality reproduction. Adjustable sideshow options...I just wish you could separate the photos into different groups. Perhaps in the next firmware update?
Folder browsing: Yessssssssssssssssss!
SD card slot: A nice touch. IMHO much better to deal with than MicroSD....and yes it will read SDHC (available up to 32 GB at this point in time!).
Bluetooth: Ok... so this I don't exactly get the point of. Why bother with wireless on a portable device? Nevertheless it's capable if you so desire for whatever reason to use the feature. Haven't tried it myself.
Yes, I could just go on and on about it, but I'm sure you get the point by now. I really like it a lot....like ya couldn't tell...8)
Archos 5 32 GB Internet Tablet with Android Review
Archos 5 32 GB Internet Tablet with Android
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
I just got my new Android 5 500GB direct from Archos yesterday and its quite a beauty. I'm upgrading from my old Archos 5 250GB, so that will be my primary point of comparison. I also have the following to compare to: iPod Touch 64GB, Archos 605, Walkman X, Samsung P2, and a host of other MP3 players large and small.
Given that my iPod Touch upgrade this year was less than astounding, I pretty much figured that this upgrade for Archos would be similarly understated. Mainly I just wanted the extra hard drive so I could backup all my laptops onto my music player. I was wrong! The new Android version seems to have a whole new feel both in form factor and the new software. I had heard that Archos was having problems with the software, but they seem to have ironed most of them out as of 1.1 firmware release. I did update my firmware immediately, and the process was quite smooth.
I'm going to rate this player on my absolute scale. I will also be making notes on the value of the upgrade from my old Archos 5. Note: I mostly use this as a media center to play music and video; secondarily as a backup drive.
Let's get to it then, these are the things I love about my new Android:
1) 500GB -- totally awesome amount of disk, I can now put just about every digital file I own on the Archos.
2) Android interface -- the overall feel of the software interface has definitively improved with the integration of Android. Effects are crisper, the esthetics are cleaner, things seem to happen faster. I especially like how easy it is to access the most recently played song or video from the main screen, pops up with a little thumbnail that you tap on and voila, resumes right where you left off!
3) Apps -- with Android we now have access to some serious app selection. Of course, nobody compares to the Apple App Store, but this comes the closest.
4) Weight -- this actually feels lighter to me than my 250GB.
5) Dock/DVR -- this popped right into my old 5 DVR and started playing right away. I still think this is the best DVR/Player combination available of all the MP3 players.
6) Video/Hi Def -- of the players I have owned, this has the best, biggest, and highest resolution screen.
7) Portrait/Landscape -- Archos has borrowed the iPhone trick of rotating the display according to orientation. I guess they have an accelerometer in there now, I dunno. Still, its fun to see this feature on an Archos. Its a lot easier to navigate playlists in portrait mode.
8) Easy and regular firmware updates -- with a WiFi connection, the firmware updates are easily performed on the unit itself. That's the easiest system I've seen of all my players. One thing I've learned about Archos over the years, they will put out a steady stream of firmware updates.
9) WMV/MTP mode-- very smooth interface to Windows for either Media Monkey or Windows Media Player.
10) Dedicated volume button -- power and volume buttons have been conveniently located onto the top edge. This is actually much easier to use when it is docked on the DVR (which is where mine spends most of its life!).
11) Sound quality is quite good, sounds great through my Klipsch speakers and seems to have more oomph than my other players.
12) WiFi/Browser -- has a good browser and WiFi connection has worked well for me. I think the keyboard is better than the Touch's, although Safari is probably the slightly superior browser. The bigger screen also helps for browsing. Overall I'm inclined to give the Archos the top ranking for browsers.
13) I just discovered Twidroid, one of many apps pre-loaded, allows me to check my Twitter in a really nice format -- love it!
14) Portability -- well there's only so much portability that can be expected with a screen and hard drive this large. This new design is smoother and rounder so its a little more comfortable in a pocket. It is very easy to carry around as a handheld device, fits nicely in my hand as I stroll about the house trying out all of the Android Apps! In any case, this is not as portable as a Touch but I think its pretty good for a small computer -- which is basically what this is.
15) No extra plug ins needed (so far!). Always in the past I've laid out another $40 for additional Archos plugins to play iPod format music and other video formats. So far I haven't had to do that -- thank you Archos :)
16) Archos will stand behind their product. I've had to send in a couple of Archos units over the years and they have always been happy to either repair or replace the unit without quibbling about it, as long as its under warranty. Note: it did take two weeks to get my unit back!
17) Multi threading: now I show my engineer/geek side. This baby can do a bunch of different stuff at the same time, unlike the iPhone/Touch which can really only do one thing at a time. The Android can be doing other stuff while you are listening music. I love the little bar on the top that you can pull down and switch to any other task that is running.
18) Built-in kickstand, very nice feature.
19) Stylus friendly touch screen -- sometimes you just get tired of trying to type a touchscreen keyboard with fat fingers! In general, this is one of my favorite touch screens. Most of the other touch screens, including iPod/iPhone, are capacitance which means stylus won't work
20) Micro USB cable plug-in: finally a standardized USB plug and you can have it resting on its kickstand while plugged in :)
Given that the Archos tops the class in several categories, and continues to be the best 500GB 5 inch screen player available I give it about a 4.7 stars out of 5 (round to 5). There are a few things I'm less than thrilled about:
1) Update: I believe you can now format your drive in a Windows friendly format on 1.7.96 version of firmware. External hard drive EXT3 -- as I understand it, Archos changed to the EXT3 hard drive format for reasons of speed and reliability. The result for me is that I can no longer simply select hard drive MSC mode, plug the Archos into a Windows machine and expect to access the drive. You have to install an Ext3 driver such as EXT2 IFS on your Windows PC. Once I did that I was able to access the hard drive and backup files to my hearts content.
2) The playlist interface didn't get much of an upgrade and its still kind of clunky. I want to simply tap my playlist and it starts playing. Often times I have to do a couple of extra taps to get the thing playing.
3) We lost the dedicated play button and removable battery a while back -- but I still miss them both! None of my favorite touch screen players has either of these features. I'm also missing the brown metallic color and the rubbery backside.
4) Finding a case for this baby is no easy trick. You're not going to find one at the local Best Buy I'm afraid. In the past I've resorted to ordering my Archos cases from European companies like I-nique and Noreve. This is generally true of any player that is not an iPod or a Zune.
5) As always with Archos, you must remember that you are dealing with a French based company. This means that they don't always provide the best support/service/upgrades to us Americans.
6) Lets face it, Archos is always playing catch up. Some of the new features aren't fully functional yet. I do have faith that Archos will fix all the little glitches with things like GPS over the course of the next 6 months. The Apps available are currently a bit limited. I expect this will improve over the coming months.
7) Keep in mind that this is not a unit for the faint of heart. This is more for the hobbyist who wants a cutting edge experience that may take some messing around to get it just the way you want it. If you want something easy that requires minimum effort then iPods are going to be more your cup of tea.
For me this is still the best player of its class -- that class being large hard drive, big screen PMP players with other fun features. Android makes for some fun possibilities, and overall I'm impressed with this as an upgrade. Once again, if you don't mind a smaller screen and you love apps I suggest you get an iPod Touch. If what you care about most is sound quality you may want to get a Walkman X. For me those are your top 3 touch screen players, it just depends on what you care about the most.
Note: 10-23-2009; I upgraded to firmware version 1.2.03 which fixes some App, Browser, and YouTube issues. Apps do seem happier now, upgrade process was very smooth. Still happily listening to tunes for about 8 hours a day with no problems :)
Update 11-7-2009: I've been running version 1.2.15 with a host of bug fixes and the unit does seem more stable in general now. Wifi is working better and USB connection seems more reliable.
Update 11-23-2009: Upgrade to firmware v 1.3.07 -- a long list of bug fixes including a few improvements that I had hoped for to control the scanning of multimedia files/ ArcLibrary. Got an AppsLib update which seems to work more reliably. There seem to be a lot more apps available now (300 ish) in AppsLib. Just keeps getting better and better! Still is playing music day in and day out with no problems and I'm backing up 2 laptops worth of files onto my 5 IT.
Update 12-18-2009: I've been on firmware 1.4.16 for over a week now. Lots of little fixes, seems even more stable now.
Update 2-11-2010: Firmware 1.7.33 (Android Donut) upgrade. The upgrade was a bit of work, I ended up reformatting the drive and starting anew. However, power saving seems to work a lot better and I haven't seen it reset itself for quite a while now. This seems to be the most solid release yet!
Update 4-8-2010: Firmware...Read more›
