Samsung HT-WP38 DVD Home Theater System with USB Plug-and-play and Wireless Rear Channel Review

Samsung HT-WP38 DVD Home Theater System with USB Plug-and-play and Wireless Rear Channel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is by far the best bang for the buck in home theater currently. My Dad decided his system needed an upgrade and so I started digging around local stores and browsing the web. The more I checked around the more apparent it became that this system is head and shoulders above anything else in its class. The inclusion of the wireless rear channel is a $200 value in competing systems such as Panasonic's.
Setup was a breaze. All the speaker wires were color-coded and snap in and out of the rear of the unit which made adjusting wires during cleanup considerably easier. When we cranked it up the first time the dog went cowering in a different room because the roar of the lion's was so intense. Aside from the laughter/sadness of scaring the dog hopefully you get the idea that this can produce a lot of sound. The sound wasn't just loud either, it was crisp and responsive on a variety of DVD's I tried.
The only bump we hit in the entire process is that apparently the included remote is not compatible with Sylvania TV's (any Sylvania TV's). I ended up killing the remote while trying codes for other brands of TV's to the point that it wouldn't work on the home theater any more. I called Samsung and pleasantly surprised at how good their phone support was. They answered the phone within a couple minutes and I spent less than 15 minutes on the phone with them. They ended up replacing the remote via mail.
So, anyone that's not an audiophile with deep pockets will get a lot of benefit from this system. Highly recommended.

SPRINT SAMSUNG IP-830W CELL PHONE Review

SPRINT SAMSUNG IP-830W CELL PHONE
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While it is a pretty big phone I really don't mind it much because it has so much functionality and I am able to comfortably surf the web and check my web mail and send text messages. The world clock is kinda useless, it doesn't have too many cities listed and I typically don't have it on display. As this has a Microsoft operating system be prepared to reboot about 2x a week on average. Also the VoiceSignal program is really terrible, it never gets my voice command right and is totally useless. Other than that, the sliding keyboard is great and while it's hard to use it with one hand after a while I was able to train myself to do so. The PDF viewer is amazing, very cool application. The battery life is not that great, and the extended battery practically doubles the weight of the phone, so keep a charger with you where you go - of course it was impossible to find a spare charger for this phone and I searched high and low before I found a car charger that was compatible. Overall, its a fun phone and keeps me well connected.

For people who need power and performance wherever they roam, the Samsung IP-830W offers the answer. The 830W world phone uses the Sprint CDMA/EV-DO networks in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and roams on CDMA and/or GSM networks (voice) and GPRS networks (data) outside of North America, making it the ultimate business-class device for mobile professionals.
Into mixing business with pleasure? The 830W has groundbreaking entertainment features. A full color display slides down to reveal an integrated QWERTY keypad, while Bluetooth, and EV-DO wireless broadband keep you on the cutting edge of connectivity. Powered by the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and with support for corporate e-mail accounts, this device is designed for maximum efficiency, wherever you are.
DesignThe 830W follows the standard form factor of the latest Pocket PC devices, with one major addition: a sliding QWERTY keyboard is hidden below the screen. A generous, 240 x 320 full-color touch-screen display dominates the face of the unit. Just below the display is a five-way selection button that allows you to navigate and control the Windows Mobile interface. Meanwhile, shortcut buttons offer quick access to your Outlook calendar, contacts, messaging, Internet Explorer, and more. Alternatively, the device can be directly controlled with an included stylus that slides out of the rear of the 830W's case.
Under the hood, the 830W sports a 520 MHz Bulverde Intel processor with 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of embedded flash memory storage. The unit's memory slot supports additional flash-based memory so you can expand for more available storage. The Windows Mobile operating system is completely touch-screen-enabled and features advanced handwriting recognition that is compatible with all of the device's applications. There's a standard stereo 2.5mm headset jack, and USB data and charging is handled by the 830W's docking ports on the bottom of the device. To kick the 830W's audio features up a notch, Samsung has also built a pair of 3D stereo speakers into the unit's case.
Calling FeaturesMany of the 830W's calling features are integrated with the Windows Mobile operating system. For instance, the included Pocket Outlook software features a contacts list that is cleverly integrated with the phone's dialing functions. Meanwhile, the phone's handwriting recognition software can be used to dial numbers and enter contact information. Speaker-independent voice dialing is integrated, too, meaning the phone recognizes spoken contact names and quickly dials them. The 830W's built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, and polyphonic ringtones are available, as is a vibrating alert. Caller ID and call waiting are also supported. Lastly, the 830W's Bluetooth connectivity makes it easy to sync the unit with a wide range of hands-free, wireless headsets and car kits.
Messaging, Internet, and ToolsThe 830W is designed as a complete mobile office solution, so Internet and messaging capabilities are robust. The unit comes packed with pocket versions of Outlook, Internet Explorer, and MSN Messenger. In addition to keeping track of contacts, Pocket Outlook features integrated calendar and e-mail functions. Microsoft's ActiveSync software keeps the device synced with all of your PC's Outlook information (via USB, infrared, or Bluetooth connection).
Users who want Internet connectivity on the road with their laptop or PDA can tap into the 830W's wireless modem capabilities. Sprint's next generation EV-DO broadband wireless network is compatible with the unit, meaning you can tap into blistering Internet speeds in areas where EV-DO coverage is provided. Meanwhile, the unit fully supports basic text messaging, as well as multimedia messaging (MMS) (Sprint Power Communication charges apply).
A generous toolset ships with the 830W's Windows Mobile 5.0 software. Pocket Outlook includes to-do lists, and pocket versions of Word and Excel are included so you can review and edit documents on the go. A calculator, an alarm clock for times when you're worried you might sleep-in, and a voice memo recorder round out the tools package.
Entertainment The 830W delivers the ultimate music experience. You can store digital music files and easily exchange them with your PC or stream them from the Internet. The included Windows Media Player application can also play videos for even more mobile entertainment.
The 830W's wallpapers and screen savers can be customized to suit your tastes. Windows Mobile and Java-based games are also supported. Samsung has even built in a handy application that allows the 830W's infrared port to control your home entertainment equipment.
Vital Statistics The Samsung IP-830W weighs 6.44 ounces and measures 4.49 x 2.28 x .97 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 2.2 hours of digital talk time and up to 130 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 850/1900 and GSM 900/1800 frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Nokia 5730 XpressMusic MP3 GSM Unlocked Cell Phone International Version Review

Nokia 5730 XpressMusic MP3 GSM Unlocked Cell Phone International Version
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this phone. Nokia gets a lot of flack for an ancient mobile OS (Symbian), but it is a very capable OS and always comes through for me in a pinch.
For the record, I now have a modded Samsung Galaxy S so this phone has been given to my brother, who still uses it to this day as his main phone.
I liked the qwerty thumb board. It is very 'clicky' and is great for texting and hammering out long emails (if in a pinch).
The music quality is very good, but I did drill a 'speaker grill' into the back of the case so that the sound is unobstructed.
If you need a basic phone with a proven rock solid mobile OS, this phone is for you.
If you want the latest and greatest with the best 'WOW!' factor, you are better off looking into an Samsung Galaxy S or iPhone 4 or HTC Desire/HD/Z.

I work as a dive instructor, and I have lost count of the cell phones that have either been 'drowned' or salt damaged in the past 6 years since I started my business.
This phone is awesome, it's waterproof as long as the port that covers the battery charging access is firmly in place, so if it should 'go for a swim it's much more likely to survive. My phone has already had a couple of water encounters that would have killed lesser phones.
The unit is sealed so I don't have to worry about using it with salty / dirty / oily hands as it can be rinsed off. The case fits nicely in the hand, and the keys are good size.
I would recommend this phone for boating, dirty or wet out door pursuits, and even mechanics and other folks involved in jobs where your phone is likely to get mucky!
The battery has a pretty good life. The phone also has a torch, the only thing that it lacks is a bottle opener!
So impressed am I that I have bought additional phones for my staff / business.

Samsung Gravity 2 T469 Phone, Berry Mauve (T-Mobile) Review

Samsung Gravity 2 T469 Phone, Berry Mauve (T-Mobile)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After looking at phones for almost two months, i picked up this phone for the following reasons:
- It is a voice-first phone, so there are no manditory data plans or add-ons
- It is the smartest non "smart" phone that you can get. it has fast nice 3g internet with functional browser, but you don't have to buy a smartphone internet plan to use it. I pay 10 bucks a month for unlimited internet that gets me any full html website just great.
- the slideout keyboard doesn't make the phone too fat and is perfect for writing emails. (emails are included in the text plan with this phone, you don't have to subscribe separately like with smart phones.
- good call clarity, though you do need to have the volume just right.
- expandable memory and great quality camera to fill it up.
the cons:
- as with all samsung phones, you can't change the menu buttons for quick access.
I would recommend this phone if you are looking for something inexpensive that can do most simple browsing and emailing functions as well as a smart phone but want something slim and easy.

T-Mobile Services
High-speed data connectivity via T-Mobile's 3G network: In addition to its quad-band GSM connectivity, this phone is also compatible with T-Mobile's UMTS/HSDPA 3G network, which operates on the 1700/2100 MHz AWS spectrum. This phone is designed to automatically connect to the best available network (3G or GSM/GPRS/EDGE) to provide faster data speeds when accessing the Web or downloading content from the T-Mobile Web2go content portal. T-Mobile is currently rolling out its 3G network, and it expects by year's end that its high-speed data network will be available in those cities where a majority of its subscribers currently use data services.
In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the via T-Mobile's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"). This high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and e-mail on the go.
While this phone is optimized for use with T-Mobile's high-speed 3G network, many of its functions will also work well on the moderate-speed EDGE network. If you plan to access the Internet extensively on your phone, 3G network coverage may serve you best.

Activities that work best on a 3G network:
Viewing content-heavy websites (lots of images or videos playing)
Viewing YouTube and other video files (they will play on EDGE, but require loading time)
Uploading large files (photos, videos, presentations) to sharing websites
Downloading large files from an e-mail or a website

Samsung 12.2 Mp 5X Opt Zoom 3.5IN Ts LCD with Gps Bt Red Review

Samsung 12.2 Mp 5X Opt Zoom 3.5IN Ts LCD with Gps Bt Red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With GPS and wireless, this is the future of cameras and many electronics. It is easy to use and takes very good quality photos for a compact. And of course it has GPS and Wifi/Bluetooth. The touchscreen is large and is very easy to use (the easiest I've ever used).
I'd like to give this a 4.5 stars rating since the issues I had with it are minor: 1) the GPS can be a bit slow getting the initial fix and 2) the touchscreen is a bit sensitive sometimes causing it to bring up menus when you don't want to, and 3) I have a preference for regular SD cards verses micro SD.
I've had mine for 2 weeks and overall I really enjoy it and the my larger digital SLR (without GPS) is collecting dust on the shelf.

Samsung S5230 Tocco Lite Unlocked Phone with Quad-Band GSM, 3 MP Camera MP3/Video Player, and MicroSD Slot--International Version with Warranty (Noble Black) Review

Samsung S5230 Tocco Lite Unlocked Phone with Quad-Band GSM, 3 MP Camera MP3/Video Player, and MicroSD Slot--International Version with Warranty (Noble Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this phone for about a month now, I am fairly pleased with its performance. I am somewhat demanding of my phones and always look to get the most bang for my buck. With the Tocco Lite I can honestly say that it is worth the money. The only complaint that I have got to date is an issue it has with its blue-tooth. I use a hands free blue-tooth earpiece that also has headphones with it the Samsung WEP870, great little gadget, the sound quality is excellent. The problem that I noticed right away is that once you turn off the MP3 player, unless you will use the headpiece, you absolutely must turn off the blue-tooth on the phone as it will eat up the battery within hours. When I did it the first time, the phone glitched. Even though the blue-tooth icon disappeared on the screen, the phone's battery continued to drain at a rate of one bar in about 2 hours. After trying a few things I finally came to a conclusion that the only way to turn off you blue-tooth after you used it with MP3 player is to restart the phone completely. That of-course resets the arrangement of the gadgets(a.k.a. apps for smart phones) and any other system setting that you have changed.
Besides this one little issue, the phone performs fairly well. Oh, another thing, it works pretty slowly if you are trying to use anything else with the MP3 player working.
Hope this is useful.

Yamaha RX-V467BL 5.1 Channel 525 Watt AV Receiver (Each, Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V467BL 5.1 Channel 525 Watt AV Receiver (Each, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this receiver based on other reviews of Yamaha receivers. I chose this over Samsung's current 5.1 and 7.1 receiver, because the Samsung units had lackluster reviews. I was curious about the Samsung receiver line because our television is a Samsung LED.
I'm thrilled with the RX-V467. First, the quality is topnotch, which is something you can always expect from Yamaha gear. It's solidly built and feels that way. There's a huge heatsink inside, visible through the top vent. Second, it's feature-rich and surprisingly easy to operate given all the options at hand.
I bought Polk Audio's SurroundBar and Polk Audio's PSW10 Subwoofer for this unit: What fantastic sound when you merge these items! For Blu-ray--also based on user ratings--I purchased the Sony BDP-360, and it works great with the Yamaha RX-V467 via HDMI-CEC.
My Samsung UN55C6500 LED LCD television works great with this receiver. I'm even able to get some HDMI-CEC functionality between the receiver, TV, and Sony Blu-ray.
The remote control looks scary at first, but once I stared into it for a few seconds, I realized the forethought that went into it. I was able to set most functions in the receiver without cracking the manual. If you've used a receiver before, you'll likely find this unit and remote easy to operate. The remote can be programmed to operate other components in your HES.
The auto calibration microphone starts the process when you plug it in. A few remote clicks and you're done. Had to set the speaker size back to Large for the SurroundBar, however, as this is what Polk Audio recommends.
I love that you can name the inputs of the unit based on what you plug in; this makes it easy to see what AV input you've selected.
I've only scratched the surface. This unit has plenty of features to keep you busy if you like that kind of stuff.
This receiver is $329 on Amazon and other places; great deal!!!!
Downsides:
My Pace HD cable box (Time Warner) did not work well via HDMI cable, but I'm not sure if this was the fault of the Pace, the receiver, or the television (or some combination). Sound and picture would blink or stutter on-and-off for about 30 seconds with each channel change (changed via the cable box). That was just unacceptable, so I went to Component and TOSLINK cables for the Pace without issue. HD cable sounds and looks great now, without "blinking," using these cable selections connected to the receiver. This unfortunately means I have both Component and HDMI cables connected to the TV.
Does not include an iPhone or iPod dock like the Samsung. The new iPhone/iPod dock should be available within the next month or so, but you'll have to buy that as an option. Starting retail price to be $99. The receiver does have a mini-plug on the front to connect your mp3 device right away, however. There is currently an iPod-only dock available for the unit ($40-$70 online); I understand it has some iPhone compatibility, but I'm waiting for the new dock.
This unit offers ZERO conversion options. In other words, it will not up-convert or down-convert one format to another (e.g., Composite to Component, Component to HDMI, etc.). Most of the reviews I've read on units from other manufacturers that do offer conversion options have been poor, which leads me to believe that it's the conversion process itself that sucks--not the receivers. No idea if the unit will do the conversion for the iPhone dock...hope it does.
Conclusion:
I recommend this receiver. As with all things, better units are available for MORE money; this unit delivers for the amount paid. If you're like me (moderate audio junkie) and need a unit for a medium-sized room (5.1 surround), I think you'll like this receiver. If you fancy yourself an audiophile and like to buy expensive audio and video cables because you think it helps, buy something more expensive.

I ordered this phone after my last AT&T-bought phone knocked out. I opened the box to discover that the phone's default language was set to portuguese and the wall charger was ment for France (it had two circular prongs next to each other). The language was fairly east to change, because most of the items int he menus had icons next to them and the phone came with a France-US adapter, which enabled me to use it normally. The phone itself is good to look at but can be surprisingly slow at time. The text input is T9 (meaning it has the same setup as most flip phones and their 12-key pad; 1.,? 2abc 3def). The music player are solid, using them with the included samsung-to-3.5mm jack adapter that doubles as a mic, and the included in-ear earbuds (I love the ear buds!). Overall its good for the price, but if you have more money go for something a bit nicer.

Samsung SSG-P3100M Megamind 3D Starter Kit - Black (Compatible with 2011 3D TVs) Review

Samsung SSG-P3100M Megamind 3D Starter Kit - Black (Compatible with 2011 3D TVs)

I got this starter kit when I purchased the new Samsung UN55D7000 T.V., for the most part the glasses work very well. They are relatively light and are for the most part comfortable to wear ( I do have a problem with them causing some discomfort if I wear them high on my nose where they should be, have to drop them down a bit ). I also purchased last years starter kit ( model # SSG-P2100T ) after buying the LN55C750 LCD tv which I returned due to unacceptable flaws, and the glasses in that kit are pretty much identical to this years kit. The one thing I dislike about this kit compared to the kit of last year is that this years kit does not come with protective pouches for the glasses like the other kit I purchased, which is the only reason I took a star off the rating IMO you spend this much money on glasses you don't want them to get scrached up. Other then that I recommend this starter kit.
Pros: light wieght, comfortable for the most part, comes with 5 3D movies ( first 3 Shreks were not filmed in 3D but converted to 3D not a pro but not the fault of Samsung either )
Cons: Kit does not come with protective pouches and glasses arent rechargable.
Hope this review helps !

3D Samsung Starter Kit Samsung's new 3D Active Glasses are the gateway to Samsung 3D entertainment. Impressive both in how they function and in what they allow you to experience, the technology works as follows: When you put them on and look at the screen, the technology first blocks the left and then the right lens. It happens faster than the blink of an eye – so your eye won't notice it. But when images are shown to each eye separately this "staggered" effect achieves far more lifelike 3D images.

Samsung UN55B7000 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV Review

Samsung UN55B7000 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV
Average Reviews:

I was a committed DLP fan before undergoing a conversion experience on Friday April 17th. I had planned to replace my Samsung DLP with a Mitbushi DLP or LaserVue. In the final hours, I just couldn't go through with it.
A major Los Angeles vendor set up a display with the UN55B7000 sandwiched between a LaserVue and a Kuro 151. The results were pretty plain to my eyes. The Luxia pretty well crushed both of them. The cult of Kuro will denounce me for heresy and blaspheme, but this is what I saw. About 1 hour of fiddling with the settings on LaserVue did not change the situation much. The Kuro was locked in at calibrated settings which the employees would not allow me to change. Evidently, it was fully tuned up. Once again, this left me with the impression that a fully calibrated Kuro is an over-rated beast indeed. No wonder Pioneer quit the market.
The bottom line: I bought this unit the next day. It took about 2 hours to tune up after I took it out of the box. [Use the natural color setting. Customize motion smoothing to 7 for jitter control and 7 for blur control, or shut it off entirely] Since then it has been pretty astounding. Unbelievable color. Unbelievable reds. Unbelievable contrast ratios. Unbelievable black levels. Very bright. Generates no perceivable heat. Does not get hot. The detail and sharpness and depth of image is truly astounding. I have never seen anything that can compare, and I have been shopping for several months now.
Cons
I am still questioning the merit of the 120Hz motion smoothing technology. It does weird things to slow motion instant replays. It does stranger things to 24fps movies. Seems to work best with live actions sports and HDTV programs shot on digital. You can always turn it off. Blu-rays seem more natural with the technology switched off. Ultimately, Blu-Ray looks magnificent either way.
Advice
A word of advice for the first reviewer and everybody else. You should never, never, never use the speakers on your HDTV. All HDTVs are equipped with pathetic 10 watt reference speakers that stink. All HDTV owners should invest in some sort of home theater surround sound system. It doesn't have to be that expensive. Even a $300 Home Theater in a Box will make a world of difference.

Samsung HT-DB390TH Wireless Home Theater System Review

Samsung HT-DB390TH Wireless Home Theater System
Average Reviews:

I was skeptic when I bought DB390 because wireless rear speakers is a new technology implementation using bluetooth. I was pleasantly surprised when it took me little effort to set it up following the manual and the wireless receiver works well.
My main concern was that I have 802.11b/g router that uses 2.4Ghz also, and I have a wireless bluetooth headset, but so far everything works great! I haven't had any issue when using all my devices (wireless network, DB390, and headset) at the same time!

Offering the elusive attributes of simplicity and convenience to anyone seeking quality home entertainment, Samsung's shining HT-DB390 delivers DVD and music playback in dynamic surround sound--without the need to drape speaker wires across your living room for the surround speakers. That's right: the HT-DB390 comes with a special high-bandwidth 2.4 GHz digital wireless transmitter that beams the data for the system's left and right surround speakers right to them, so you can enjoy enveloping multichannel surround sound without the fuss of drilling holes or hiding speaker cables. The front left, right, and center speakers all use cables, of course (supplied), but--being closer to the system's unified DVD player/surround receiver--they'll be relatively unobtrusive. The HT-DB390 spins DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, DVD-R/-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) CD, as well as JPEG image CD--great for living-room slide shows of your digital photos. The amplifier delivers 60 watts per channel to each of the system's 5 compact satellite speakers, while the stand-alone subwoofer packs a hefty 100 watts for wall-whopping bass. A built-in AM/FM tuner comes with 30 station presets for easy tuning to your favorite stations. All major movie and music surround signals are decoded and routed to their appropriate speakers: multichannel DVD-Audio, Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II (which generates 5.1 surround from any stereo source, whether movie or music), and DTS 5.1-channel surround sound. The system includes an AM/FM radio tuner with 30 preset memory settings, and a headphone jack for private or late-night listening.DVD-Audio discs offer super high-fidelity sound, providing 192 kHz/24-bit multichannel and/or stereo sound (depending on the disc), high storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs. These discs often have compressed Dolby Digital soundtracks for listening on standard DVD players, but true DVD-A decoding such as this system provides is required for full sonic appreciation. The system's progressive-scan component-video output prepares you for the future, with the ability to use the system in conjunction with a high-definition or HD-ready television. Smooth progressive-scan images are free from even the slightest hint of blurring or distortion, bringing new realism to DVD movies and other selections. The HT-DB390 also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; reverse 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.Auxiliary audio/video inputs let you connect additional components like your VCR to the system. What's in the Box DVD player/integrated surround amplifier, 4 satellite speakers, a center speaker, a powered subwoofer, AM/FM antennas, a wireless transmitter, a remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, all requisite cabling.

I've used this laptop for about 3 months now running the version of Windows Vista that came installed as well as a 64bit version of Ubuntu.
First off, it is a fantastic size and is easy to carry around. The primary reason I purchased it was for its small size. For my uses (web browsing some programming and some casual media usage) the size is ideal.
The display is crisp and very bright. Colors look good, if a bit over saturated and contrasty, but it's glossy and reflects badly in a bright room. You can't use it with a window at your back it reflects too much to see.
The keyboard is slightly smaller than normal but I found it relatively easy to type on although the keys don't give great feedback and make fast touch typing difficult.
It came loaded with 64bit Vista Home Premium which took many hours of downloading and installing updates before it was fully up to spec. It also comes with a lot of annoying bundled software that had to be removed. It has a 500mb drive (465mb usable) that allowed plenty of space to also install Linux (Ubuntu). Ubuntu ran acceptably well. The main advantage of running Ubuntu on this machine is that the laptop boots to a usable state in around one minute with Ubuntu instead of the 3.5 minutes it takes to boot Vista and get it to a point where it will allow you to start a program.
The are two primary problems with this laptop. The AMD Neo processor is just slow. 64bit doesn't help it. It's simply a wimp. It feels barely faster than a netbook. The CPU winds up to 100% usage when running most programs and runs its fan speed up with it which is quite loud. The fan never really dies down and makes quite a bit of noise even when the CPU is running under 15% (which is rare). Unless your viewing a web page with no flash the processor is working at over 50% all the time. This results in the second problem which is very poor battery life. I average about 2 hours of battery life which in an ultra-portable laptop is unacceptable to me. I've been looking for an extended battery but the only one available is some non-HP import from China on *bay.
This is supposed to be a media laptop but it can't display media full screen in Vista (either movies displayed from iTunes or NBC, Hulu etc.) without jerky video. Completely unacceptable for a "wm" windows media laptop. Full screen media runs slightly better on this under Linux. Also the speakers are pathetic. Full volume requires a quiet room to hear clearly and they are both located on the left half of the front of the laptop so there is no stereo field. At first I thought the right speaker was dead then I realized the right speaker is located right next to the left speaker... sad.
More little "nits" are they shiny black plastic of the case and palm area is a fingerprint magnet and if you the least bit of a clean freak it will drive you nuts. It also has some little stupid designs silkscreened into the palm area that are embarrassing if your a hetero-male. The trackpad offers a "scrolling" region but it's very flaky and doesn't offer smooth scrolling in either Windows or Linux so it's related to the hardware. Also the trackpad is flush with the top of the laptop and you can't feel when you're moving your finger off the track area. The trackpad buttons are difficult to press and are flush with the top making pressing them with your thumb awkward.
The external CD/DVD drive is a bit kludgy and the cable is so short that it is difficult to orient sometimes if your not seated at a clear desk. I haven't tried using the Lightscribe capability of the drive yet so no comment on that however it's been very picky about the type of DVD's it will successfully write to.
Overall a very poor implementation. I wish I'd bought a netbook. A netbook would have been hundreds cheaper and offered nearly the same computing experience.

Samsung NC10-14GBK 10.2-Inch Black Netbook - 6 Cell Battery Review

Samsung NC10-14GBK 10.2-Inch Black Netbook - 6 Cell Battery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
USER BACKGROUND:
I've been involved with PC's since PC's came into existence. Through the years I've owned a wide range of notebooks from luggables, desktop replacements, to travel companions (currently I own a couple of 12" touch screen tablets and two HP 20" HDX media notebooks used as desktop replacements). I was ready for a new travel notebook and started to follow the evolving "Netbook" category. As in the past, I was faced with a substantial expenditure (several thousand dollars) to get one of the current higher end travel notebooks that would meet my general laptop requirements; a light, relatively powerful, good battery life and compact design. The evolving +/- $500 Netbook category piqued my curiosity and I started to read reviews and study the new product offerings including their upgradability potential, or lack thereof.
INTENDED USE:
In my experience, most air travelers use a laptop similar to myself, web browsing, email, and light office applications (word, excel, etc); or in other words the "Netbook" categories target market.
REQUIREMENTS:
On occasion I take long trips across the country (8 to 10 hour block to block) and I wanted my new purchase to provide a single charge that would last through that day's journey; no spare batteries or AC adapter in tow. A typical trip for me begins at the departure gate and firing up the notebook for a little catch-up computing while waiting for departure. Once airborne and settled in, I pull my notebook out for some on-board work. Upon arriving at my connection stop I either head to a travel lounge or the departure gate and get on-line once again. On the last flight leg, I'll generally pull out my notebook for some additional in-air use before getting to my destination.
My target requirements:
1.Light weight & Compact foot-print
2.Long battery life
3.10" - 12" screen size, 1024x600 minimum resolution and bright
4.Reasonable processing power for intended use
5.Windows XP Pro
6.2 GB of memory and a 320 GB 7200 rpm hard drive
MY NETBOOK SELECTION:
I purchased the "Samsung NC10" and I'M VERY IMPRESSED! I pre-ordered from Amazon.com and received the unit on 11/19/08. I settled on the white version since I'm not a fan of black keyboards which the NC10's blue and black color options sport. With the modifications discussed below, this little machine exceeds my overall expectations and is everything the various reviewers have analyzed and discussed to date. Most reviewers consider the keyboard on the NC10 the best in category, but since I'm not a touch typist that wasn't one of my hot buttons, however the key board is large, solid, and pleasant to use.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
The standard NC10 came closest to my purchase specs for light weight; it's under 3 lbs, long battery life; it seems Samsung's targeted 6 - 8 hours of battery life is doable (I've hit 6+ hours using disk, WiFi and toned down screen brightness). The 10.2" screen is very bright and clear with 1024x600 resolutions; it helps to auto-hide the taskbar to buy a little more screen real estate. The unit is very compact and like most Netbooks its projected area is smaller then an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper and the closed clamshell is 1" thick. The standard unit arrives with XP Home, 1 GB memory and a 160 GB 5400 rpm drive. The NC10 feels solid, build quality (inside and out) are excellent and out of the box the unit was responsive and fairly snappy. I have two WiFi access points in my home and the NC10's WiFi card picked both up with excellent reception and through-put; I also tried my Sprint USB broadband adapter with equally satisfactory results.
THE UPGRADES:
Like most engineering types; "If its not broke, take it apart and fix it anyway". I've read the reviews and knew the memory and hard disk could be easily be upgraded (given a little bit of prior experience and some hardware finesse). I went to my preferred parts supplier, Newegg, and purchased a 2GB stick of RAM for $32 and a 7200 rpm 320 GB disk drive for $100. I also picked-up a nice Netbook carrying case by Caselogic for $12 with my Amazon order. I used Apricon's EZ Upgrade Kit to image the units' standard 160 GB disk and then put it on the shelf as the failsafe backup. It took me about 10 minutes to take the unit apart and upgrade the components. I then prepared a Windows XP Pro DVD slipstreamed with SP3, repartitioned the disk, reinstalled the operating system and all the Samsung drivers and application software. Samsung did an excellent job of putting all the NC10's drivers and application software on their technical support web page. The overall result of these upgrades makes a noticeable improvement in overall performance. I'm very pleased with the final results for this tweaked, travel ready road machine (an example: standard boot time to WiFi connection is about 90 seconds, however I use hibernation on my notebooks and the machine will boot-up to WiFi connected status in 25 seconds).

NETBOOKS FUTURE:
I agree with many of the industry and media experts who have editorialized on the Netbook phenomena. Netbooks will continue to be a significant new growth segment in the overall notebook category. The manufactures have an interesting dilemma however; Netbooks will also continue to cut into sales of the higher margin, costlier tier of their notebook offerings. Feature creep is probably going to be the manufactures biggest marketing challenge; the temptation to seek product differentiation by adding larger screens, faster processors (central & graphics), more IO, etc., all tending to increase price, size, weight, and cut into battery life. If you examine your real world use and expectations you may have the same epiphany I have had; these little Netbooks are excellent solutions vs. the more expensive traditional notebook offerings. With a couple of easy inexpensive tweaks, the "Samsung NC10" is a home run!
