This is my second Lenovo notebook. The first one was a ThinkPad R61 which I liked very much. It got stolen out of the back of my car. So, liking the Lenovo product, I bought a new one. The product I am reviewing is similar to the "item being reviewed," the main differences being that I have a 2.0G processor where this one has a 2.13G processor.
Build Quality:
Lenovo is the company which manufactured IBM's laptop computers. IBM's laptops were designed for business users. They were tough enough to be dragged around everywhere. It continues to make laptop computers which are more road friendly than the competition, even in this unit which is "home user" oriented. On most of the competition's laptop computers for school and home use, you can twist the lid/screen and there is a good deal of flex. Not so here. This means the screen is less likely to get damaged or cracked. The rest of the case similarly has little flex which means it is well built. While the keyboard is not up to the quality of the ThinkPad line, it is still very good and does not have much flex or bend when you type on it. It is a bit heavy weighing in at over 6 lbs, but it is worth it to me when I consider that it is less likely to break.
XP Drivers available on-line:
The Y530 comes with Vista Home Premium. Mine has the 64 bit o/s. I hate Vista. It is bloated, slow, overly intrusive, the Start Menu was modified poorly from XP, it is cumbersome to find any administrative tools and it does not work with many pieces of business software. When Microsoft updates their operating systems, it seems that only their software works on the newer o/s. WordPerfect X3 (the better word processor!), Paperport 11.0, older versions of WordPerfect and Legal Solutions Plus and many older game programs simply won't work properly, even when you tell the system to run the program in XP mode. This, I suspect, is the reason about 75% of the business computers still run XP.
Vista Ultimate and Business come with downgrade rights to XP. Here, no such rights exist; HOWEVER, Lenovo provides drivers and software on line so you can load XP!!! (XP is faster than Vista and runs everything I need!) I will be downgrading.
Performance:
I get the following benchmarks with Vista:
Performance Test 6.1: 525.7
PC Wizard (not valid because of 64 bit o/s) = 2047
3DMark 01 = 5193
3DMark 03 = 2269
3DMark 05 = 1199
3DMark 06 = 905
SuperPI calculation of PI to 1M places takes 29.25 seconds.
PLEASE REMEMBER, MINE HAS THE SLOWER PROCESSOR SO THIS SHOULD BE ABOUT 5 - 10% FASTER!
In short, this machine is not as fast as my 2 year old XP based desktop which has a 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo with 2G of memory, an ATI All In Wonder X800XL video card on a Gigabyte 965G-DS3 motherboard running XP. This box is not up to speed for modern gamers. It has good speed as a home entertainment and business/school oriented system. An O/S downgrade to XP would no doubt give you an extra 10% or so of speed.
Appearance and Functionality:
Lenovo still goes with the industrial black look. The outside is plain dull black which is textured so as to make it easier to grip. None of the high gloss colored plastic stuff that is on so many HPs and Dells and Sony Vaios.
Inside, you get a piano black high gloss plastic surrounding the 15.4" screen. The hinge is in the back of the machine, and rather than clamp the screen on the top of the box, the lid is bent and wraps around the computer/keyboard/electronics bottom section. The keyboard is surrounded by a single piece of brushed metal with a black touch sensitive multimedia controls above the keyboard and an orange volume control on the right side of the touch controls.
The box contains five speakers, including an alleged subwoofer which fires downward under the computer. I would look at the Toshibas with the HK speaker systems for a better audio performance.
It comes with a multi-card reader slot, dual layer dvd/CD writer, HDMI output, VGA output, 3 USB ports, modem, ethernet port, built in WIFI, Dolby Digital sound system, microphone and 1.3 megapixel camera in the lid. It includes Veriface software which allows the computer to enter your log-on password using just your image. The Veriface software is very sensitive, and works only from the right distance and at the same angle. It does not seem to be available on XP.
Cons:
Unlike HP, the keyboard has no angle to it, so you are typing on a slightly uncomfortable surface if you have it on a desk or table. There are four small rubber pieces which protect the screen when the lid is closed. Two are right under your wrists and my writs rub against them unless I wear a long sleve shirt. It comes with Vista and a trial version of Norton Anti-virus, which I find ineffective and annoying.
The high gloss screen is a little too high gloss and too reflective under certain circumstances.
Conclusion:
Based on the price to performance ratio, excelent build quality and availability of XP drivers on line, I would not hesitate to purchase this unit again.

I've used this laptop for about 3 months now running the version of Windows Vista that came installed as well as a 64bit version of Ubuntu.
First off, it is a fantastic size and is easy to carry around. The primary reason I purchased it was for its small size. For my uses (web browsing some programming and some casual media usage) the size is ideal.
The display is crisp and very bright. Colors look good, if a bit over saturated and contrasty, but it's glossy and reflects badly in a bright room. You can't use it with a window at your back it reflects too much to see.
The keyboard is slightly smaller than normal but I found it relatively easy to type on although the keys don't give great feedback and make fast touch typing difficult.
It came loaded with 64bit Vista Home Premium which took many hours of downloading and installing updates before it was fully up to spec. It also comes with a lot of annoying bundled software that had to be removed. It has a 500mb drive (465mb usable) that allowed plenty of space to also install Linux (Ubuntu). Ubuntu ran acceptably well. The main advantage of running Ubuntu on this machine is that the laptop boots to a usable state in around one minute with Ubuntu instead of the 3.5 minutes it takes to boot Vista and get it to a point where it will allow you to start a program.
The are two primary problems with this laptop. The AMD Neo processor is just slow. 64bit doesn't help it. It's simply a wimp. It feels barely faster than a netbook. The CPU winds up to 100% usage when running most programs and runs its fan speed up with it which is quite loud. The fan never really dies down and makes quite a bit of noise even when the CPU is running under 15% (which is rare). Unless your viewing a web page with no flash the processor is working at over 50% all the time. This results in the second problem which is very poor battery life. I average about 2 hours of battery life which in an ultra-portable laptop is unacceptable to me. I've been looking for an extended battery but the only one available is some non-HP import from China on *bay.
This is supposed to be a media laptop but it can't display media full screen in Vista (either movies displayed from iTunes or NBC, Hulu etc.) without jerky video. Completely unacceptable for a "wm" windows media laptop. Full screen media runs slightly better on this under Linux. Also the speakers are pathetic. Full volume requires a quiet room to hear clearly and they are both located on the left half of the front of the laptop so there is no stereo field. At first I thought the right speaker was dead then I realized the right speaker is located right next to the left speaker... sad.
More little "nits" are they shiny black plastic of the case and palm area is a fingerprint magnet and if you the least bit of a clean freak it will drive you nuts. It also has some little stupid designs silkscreened into the palm area that are embarrassing if your a hetero-male. The trackpad offers a "scrolling" region but it's very flaky and doesn't offer smooth scrolling in either Windows or Linux so it's related to the hardware. Also the trackpad is flush with the top of the laptop and you can't feel when you're moving your finger off the track area. The trackpad buttons are difficult to press and are flush with the top making pressing them with your thumb awkward.
The external CD/DVD drive is a bit kludgy and the cable is so short that it is difficult to orient sometimes if your not seated at a clear desk. I haven't tried using the Lightscribe capability of the drive yet so no comment on that however it's been very picky about the type of DVD's it will successfully write to.
Overall a very poor implementation. I wish I'd bought a netbook. A netbook would have been hundreds cheaper and offered nearly the same computing experience.

pros
+ backlit keyboard
+ amazing speakers (like, best I've heard on a laptop, amazing (though my new xps 14 is at least equal to these)
+ circular scrolling is extremely effective
+ high resolution hdmi out
+ nice slot loading dvd drive
+ FN keys accessible from the screen with the mouse
+ boots very quickly if you enable it
cons
-extraordinarily loud fan
* fan turns on at a high power level even when laptop is idle
-keyboard keys occasionally (often) fail
-extremely limited viewing angles
Update: I've since purchased a dell xps 14, and It has the gt420m that this was originally advertised as having. Having tested both the 420 far outperforms the 330 in real-world testing.

ASUS N53JF-A1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum) Review

ASUS N53JF-A1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am glad I decided on this laptop. Price vs. performance it is an absolute value and the speakers are awesome! They sound great for some little dinkey laptop speakers. The screen is great and YouTube HD videos are very nice, even though the laptop is only 720p or what ever. HD is HD unless you absolutely have to have full HD the display is great. The screen does fold back further than what I've used in a laptop which makes for an especially comfortable viewing angle sitting on the floor. I don't experience the phenomenon of keyboard flex. Then again I don't mash on mine when I'm frustrated. I reserve that for my head. Keys are decent in size and a number pad is always a plus. The physical appearance of the computer is beautiful and dark aluminum grey. The Geforce 425 video card is DirectX 11 which is new technology and 1GB of video memory is great. I don't really have any complaints about this laptop except for the battery life. I've only been able to squeeze about 3 hours of this 6 cell. It might not make for a great portable unless you had a 9 cell battery. However this laptop could make a pretty good desktop replacement if your on a budget. The Asus 2 year standard warranty is great considering you only get 1 with Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. 1 year standard accidental warranty. I would recommend this laptop.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1201N-PU17-SL 12.1-Inch Silver Netbook - 5 Hours of Battery Life Review

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1201N-PU17-SL 12.1-Inch Silver Netbook - 5 Hours of Battery Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As of the date of this review, the ASUS-1201N is the best netbook on the market today. This is my first netbook purchase, and I wanted a machine with the following characteristics;
-at least 2 GB of RAM
-graphics processor capable of playing 1080P media
-decent battery life (willing to sacrifice battery life for performance, since I'm usually close to a wall socket)
-Windows 7 Premium (offers improved battery life over Windows 7 Starter)
-11.6" to 12.1" size
-1366 x 768 resolution
-At least a 100 GB hard drive (SSD still too pricey and swapping out drives voids warranty)
First, a little background information. Thanks to restrictions by Intel and Microsoft, the number of high performance netbooks is quite small. The vast majority of netbooks have just 1 GB of ram, and are too small in size (most are in the 9-10" range). However, I settled on 4 possibilities, the ASUS EEE PC 1201N, Lenovo IdeaPad S12, HP Mini 311, and the Samsung N510. I immediately discounted the Samsung because of the high pricetag ($600). The remaining three all lacked one feature of the 1201N; dual core processors. The Asus is the only netbook to currently feature 1.6GHz Dual Core Intel Atom 330s. In general, the order of netbook processors is as follows;
Dual Core Atom 330s (found mostly on nettops) >> Atom N450 > Atom N280 > Atom N270 > Atom Z520
Since the Mini 311, Lenovo, and Asus were all comparably priced, I decided to go with the newer and more powerful Asus. I should also note that the HP Mini 311 only has the Nvidia Ion LE chipset, which is not DirectX 10 compatible, although it can be hacked to full Ion compatibility. However, I suspect that mainstream users are not interested in hacking their netbooks. I had also considered waiting until CES 2010 finished to get a glimpse of future netbooks. But, based on what has been revealed so far at CES, most of the future offerings will be just 10" netbooks with a single core N450, 1 GB RAM and a new Crystal HD Broadcom chip. At best, on parity with the 1201N, and probably marked into the $400 range when all optioned out. Ultimately, I decided that I wanted a netbook larger than 10".
The Amazon price for the 1201N was $482, which is at the high end of the netbook market. Why should I get this 1201N, when I can easily get a comparably priced CULV (Intel's Core 2 Ultra Low Voltage) light notebook with superior performance you ask? Well, the CULV performance is only superior with regard to the processor; GPU-wise, CULV equipped notebooks with Intel's integrated graphics GMA3150/4500MHD solutions are actually worse than the Nvidia Ion equipped 1201N. A CULV notebook with higher performance GPU would run you in the $800-1000 range. Asus has a CULV with Intel 4500MHD for about $600, but the Intel integrated graphics leaves much to be desired. As far as I know, there is no sub-$800 CULV with 9400M that weighs less than 4 lbs and is less than 13" and is ultra-mobile. The 1201N fills that gap.
Nvidia Ion (GeForce 9400M) >> Intel GMA3150 (PineTrail) and 4500MHD > Intel GMA950 >> Intel GMA500
I also thought about waiting for Nvidia's Ion2 platform to hit the market, but considering that it took Nvidia and the computer manufacturers close to one year to output a netbook to take advantage of the Ion, I decided to go ahead and make the purchase. The Ion gives you the capability to play *some* games; it definitely won't play Crysis! You'll most likely have to play at 800 x 600 resolution to get any sort of decent performance, but at least there's a capability. You probably won't be able to get past the loading screen on other netbooks. While Ion dings battery life, it in combination with the dual Atoms allows you to watch 1080P content while multi-tasking on the 1201N, previously unheard of in a netbook.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS of the 1201N: The size is perfect! I'm glad I didn't get a 10" netbook. It arrived pretty barebones; netbook, battery, charger, and a few software CDs. Initial impressions were very good; the glossy black cover actually seems pretty fingerprint resistant. Overall construction is very solid, be careful once you insert the battery pack, because it tips the center of mass very sharply. Make sure you have a tight grip- mine nearly slipped out of my hand. In addition, I thought the Velcro straps on the battery cords were a nice touch; they keep the wires tucked away more neatly than plastic zip ties. Some also complained of the hard drive being too noisy- I didn't notice anything unusual, just the steady hum of the hard drive that was mildly audible only if I placed my ear right on top of the keyboard. Air flow seems fine- after several hours of usage, the keyboard was still the same temperature, and the bottom was warm, but not hot.
KEYBOARD/TOUCHPAD: I really like the keyboard, and note, it is a full-size keyboard. Some online review sites thought it flexed a bit too much, but I didn't notice any flexing. The chiclet style keyboard appears to be very solidly made. I do have one minor complaint, whilst typing, my greasy wrists tend to leave imprints all over the nice glossy plastic wrist-rest. I have never used a dimpled one-button touchpad before, but it seems to work well. While the touchpad only has a single button/bar, it has independent left-and-right hand sides that can be depressed, effectively making it a 2-button touchpad. Those of you who don't like touchpads may want to invest in a USB mouse for convenience.
WINDOWS 7: Initial setup of Windows 7 took about 30-40 minutes; thereafter, boot time is about 30 seconds. There's not much bloatware pre-installed; basically only MS Works, Trend Micro Anti-Virus, MS Office Starter, Acrobat Reader, and a media-player. Response to keyboard and mouse inputs seems fast, I didn't notice any lagging. Minor quibble- how do I get the Windows Classic look in Windows 7?!
DISPLAY: As for the display, I like the glossy screen, it looks fantastic, and text is clear, sharp, and very legible. Before I purchased the netbook, I was bothered by the screen not being flush with the bezel in various promotional images. Now with the unit actually in hand, I don't really notice any aesthetic issues. The whole seashell design is very nicely done.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS: Maximum battery time with a full charge is about 5-6.5 hours, but that's with LCD brightness at 50%, battery saver, and very little user activity. The battery saver settings are easy to toggle, simply pressing Fn + spacebar cycles through the different choices. The hard drive is oddly partitioned into a c: drive with about 100 GB and a d: drive with about 125 GB. Note that Nvidia's ION chipset takes 250 MB of the 2 GB of RAM for its own usage.
1080P MEDIA: Aha, here's the juicy part! So I installed CoreAVC Professional, and disabled deblocking (which helped to offset some of the CPU load). I played a 1080P music video, and opened up Windows task manager. CPU utilization was at just 60%, and I was also able to open a MS Powerpoint file, an MS Word file, and play a 3D Chess game. The 1080P file played fine, with no hiccups. I was quite impressed by the multi-tasking in the 1201N. Battery life decreased a bit to roughly 4 hours, but I wasn't continuously playing high definition media.
Also, I can't stress how important it is to use CoreAVC Pro for decoding High Definition H.264 media; the 1201N can handle 1080P without CoreAVC (using ffdshow), but CPU utilization shoots up to ~ 90%. With CoreAVC and deblocking turned off, it goes down to 60%. CoreAVC really helps boost the 1201N's multi-tasking abilities, it's also not too expensive. I think Core AVC 2.0 is selling for about $8-$10.
Sorry ladies and gents, haven't gotten around to testing games on it yet.
OTHER THOUGHTS: Reliability wise, all the netbooks are about the same, which is to say, not very reliable. Well, at least ASUS isn't as bad as HP. I decided to do myself a favor and buy a Squaretrade Extended warranty for peace of mind.
CONCLUSION: In summary, should you get this 1201N? Well, it depends on your needs. But if having 8 hour+ battery performance isn't terribly important, and you want a well performing netbook with decent battery life, superior multimedia capabilities, and some gaming performance, then I strongly recommend the 1201N.
I want to also add that purchasing from Amazon for $480 with no tax and free shipping makes this deal much hotter than buying from newegg, wherein tax tips the price over $500.UPDATE (01/25/10): Engadget released their review today of the Dell Mini 10 with Broadcom Crystal HD hardware based accelerated netbook. All optioned out, with 1366x768 screen, the Dell Mini 10 comes to $425, which is actually quite close to the 1201N price-point. They noted that the Broadcom Crystal HD is ONLY capable of playing back 1080P WMV files media using Windows Media Player 11. For those of you who wish to use Quicktime, VLC, WMP Classic, or Flash 10.1 you're out of luck. MKV (matroskas), MOV, BLU-RAY DISCS, are **NOT** supported by the Broadcom Crystal HD chip, go figure. I know several other netbook manufacturers were considering using the Broadcom Crystal chip as well. The Dell Mini 10 also does not have an HDMI out, and the size is 2" smaller than the 1201N. Here, size makes a big difference.
So if you want any sort of 1080P playback utilizing a large range of input files while also maintaining multi-tasking at a sub-$500 price with reasonable battery life, the 1201N is the best option!
UPDATE (03/01/10): Engadget has reported on an updated, next-gen 1201PN model at this year's CeBIT. The Dual Atom...Read more›

Samsung RF510-S01 15.6-Inch HD LED Laptop (Graphite Radiant Burst) Review

Samsung RF510-S01 15.6-Inch HD LED Laptop (Graphite Radiant Burst)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this laptop a couple weeks ago and so far I'm extremely pleased with it. All the research I did before buying this thing definitely paid off, because this is one quality product. For some reason this laptop isn't sold in stores and therefore there aren't many reviews, which had me a little hesitant at first. But for the price, specs, and the few reviews I did find, I couldn't refuse. The graphite radiant burst is more of a shiny black with a purplish tint when under direct light, which actually looks a lot better than the press shots make it seem, in my opinion. The lid definitely picks up fingerprints, but it's stylish enough for me not to mind an occasional wipe-down. For casual gaming, this thing performs great. I was able to play Unreal Tournament 3 on all the highest settings with no problem. Based on another review, the 3dmark06 test (measures graphics performance) had a slightly higher score than the competition I had considered (dell xps 15, acer aspire 5740g, samsung r780), though not as high as the Gateway ID49C08u. It's PCMark vantage test did score higher than the Gateway though, so in the end I thought this was overall the better product, especially considering it's up-to-date features such as USB 3.0. I'm sure all of the above perform great, but I'm definitely not lacking anything in terms of performance with this machine. Depending on the exact features you're looking for though, the Dell, Acer and Gateway are definitely worth looking into. And if you're willing to spend a little more money, the HP ENVY 14 might be the way to go. For me personally though, this was the perfect choice and I am extremely happy with it.

ASUS U43JC-X1 14-Inch Bamboo Laptop (10 Hours of Battery Life) Review

ASUS U43JC-X1 14-Inch Bamboo Laptop (10 Hours of Battery Life)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this as a replacement for a Dell 1720. As I study computer and electrical engineering, I'm very familiar with the internal components of electronics. This is a very well made notebook. Most of my friends and colleagues find the notebook very attractive and distinctively ideal. But, aesthetic taste differ from person-to-person and can only be merely objective. So, what is really important, are the numbers in between that motivated this to be my final choice. And, I'm glad I did 100%.
Processor Core i5 450M
This is currently the SECOND HIGHEST SCORING DUAL CORE MOBILE PROCESSOR, according to PassMark's website. The first being the Core i7 620M, which cost roughly twice as much and only provides a 10% improvement. Very smart on ASUS's behalf, because the majority of programs only utilize two cores. This means that most people buying a quad core will only use half of the potential of their CPU. Whereas, this processor doubles the amount of pathways for the dual cores to use. In short, the processor optimizes both cores by having twice as many streams and acts like a quad core ALL OF THE TIME. And, this doesn't even include the 12-way associative 3MB of L3 cache. GREAT NOTEBOOK PROCESSOR. PERIOD
RAM
Most people don't really understand RAM or How it woks. So, I'll keep this simple. Your CPU has a core speed. You RAM has a core speed rating. When both of these are the same speed, your computer is termed "synced." A very very important thing. If your computer is not synced, some of the data is lost in the transmission and has to be sent again. Making it slower than originally intended. This computer is synced perfect, so DO NOT GO OUT AND BUY FASTER RAM. It will be a waste of your money. The latency is 7-7-7-20 and as good as you can buy for 1333.
USB 3.0
I bought this with every intention of getting the most out of USB 3.0. I felt really disappointed in the performance for a few reasons. Some are my fault, and I'll explain. Intel has said they will not support USB 3.0 on their boards. They are waiting for LightPeak to replace all current standards. While this is a smart business move for Intel, the rest of us are left with the consequences. The only way USB 3.0 can be used with an Intel processor is through the use of third party controllers. These are not nearly up to the speeds of the AMD boards. I own a Super Talent Supercrypt 32GB that I planned on using for clean installs, but you need to install the drivers after installing the OS for USB 3.0 to work, $#!}. So, USB 3.0 can only be used for AMD board clean installs. And, to make matters worse, the drivers are slow. I can hit about 96MB/sec on the U43Jc, but on an AMD board I get about 230MB/sec. I should have researched a little more, but hopefully, I can save some of you time. DON'T LET THIS BE THE DECIDING FACTOR FOR BUYING THIS COMPUTER. All Intel based notebooks will suffer from the same problem, and AMD processors aren't nearly this good. If it's a problem, wait for LightPeak.
Switchable nvidia 310M
By knowing how to use this, you can increase you battery life. Just hit the button in the upper-left corner, and you will switch to the onboard graphics card, simple. This card is not made for extreme video games, but CASUAL games can be played with ease.
Display 1366x768
This is one of the brightest and clearest screens I've seen. Some people might complain about the resolution, not being high enough, but do you really need more resolution on a 14" screen?? NO
Bluetooth
Absent in this model. Have never used it before, so it wasn't a factor for my decision.
Keyboard
A chicklet style keyboard that is almost identical to a MacBook Pro. I like it.
DVD Drive
I guess people still use these things. Anyways, it contains one of the best made for notebooks, a Matshita UJ89A2S.
Bloatware
Almost all PC computers come with this nowadays. Just download Revo uninstaller and remove what you don't think you'll use. Search Google for Asus Bloatware guide for information.
Camera
I believe all computers come with, pretty much, the same camera. Until someone starts putting Carl Zeiss lenses on these things, there all the same to me.
Audio
Audio is on the low end, but most loud notebooks go loud and sound distorted. If audio is really important to you, you probably think all notebooks sound horrible. Cure: Buy a pair of Klipsch Image S4. Simple the best affordable headphones available.
Coupon
I'm mentioning this now, because this severely affected the final part of my review, but since it was part of the original price, I included this in the review. I purchased this for $999, and received a $150 Amazon gift card. This made all the difference in the world. I know computer speed "bottlenecks" in certain areas. The biggest area is the hard drive. While the U43Jc-X1 comes with a Seagate Momentus 5400rpm, the Crystal Disk Mark I scored was around 90MB/sec. Faster than most, but I wanted this notebook to fly. So, I used the coupon to order a 64GB Crucial RealSSD C300. Best upgrade for any computer in the world.
Battery Life
Most people are getting close to 6 hours, and I concur. After changing the hard drive, I was getting closer to 8 1/2. Huge improvement. Everything else increased immensely too. My cold boot time is around 13 sec. Microsoft Office Word 2010 opens in 1 sec. No exaggeration. Shutdown is between 3-5 sec. Everything else opens immediately, and I have a longer battery life.
Heat
The most important fact for determining notebook reliability, longevity, and build construction. This product is so well made that I RARELY HEAR THE FAN EVEN TURN ON. This means the computer doesn't get hot enough for it, although I am speaking after the SSD install. This is a sure sign of a solid build construction.
Overall
This is a quality computer with some of the best components on the market. Asus gives a 1 year accident warranty. Meaning you can drop it in the pool and get a new one. Hard to beat. You'll be hard pressed to find something of this caliber at this price, not to mention you'll stand out in the crowd. Just remember, sometimes, "It's what's on the inside that counts." ~proverb

Samsung Q430 14-Inch HD LED Laptop (Aluminum surface with Black finish) Review

Samsung Q430 14-Inch HD LED Laptop (Aluminum surface with Black finish)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this laptop couple days ago and am very satisfied with it. I thought the design might look ugly just looking at the pictures, but the design is very nice.
Anyways here are the pros and cons
Pro: nice sleek design, comfortable keyboard, good performance, reasonable graphic card, cheap price (at least based on my price), light weight, and does not get very hot
Cons: lack of bluetooth (which i hardly use), lack of some ports such as memory card reader (which again I hardly use), sound quality is not very good, arrow keys kinda smooshed together with the rest of the keypads (not really a problem), lack of hoktkeys (which means you have to hold the "fn" button to control the volume and etc)
I really think this is a decent laptop for decent price (unless they raise the price up). Even though there seems to be a lot of cons, i think those are really minor issues (at least for me) and the pros outweight the cons. So if you are look for a decent laptop for a cheap price, I recommend this product.

ASUS B43F-A1B 14-Inch Business Laptop - Black Review

ASUS B43F-A1B 14-Inch Business Laptop - Black

I have had this for a couple weeks now and outside of a couple small program issues, this is a great machine. The second time I turned it on, it recognized my face and was logging me in before I even touched the keyboard. The built in hardware is well built and it's a very powerful machine.
The only real issue I've had is with Firefox 4.0 running on Win7 Pro. It takes several minutes to load Amazon.com product pages. Also, I had to re-install the fingerprint reader driver to get it working. Otherwise, I use this about 6-8 hours a day and it doesn't get too hot, it's fast, and has a way better keyboard than my previous Lenovo T400, which became very problematic after only 2 years of medium usage.

I have been looking at this item for quite a while and finally pulled the trigger. My concerns with the speed of the processor on the Core 2 rather than i5 and i7 and the high price were my only reason not to buy. After reading about the battery hit taken on this with the faster processors and the price dropping about $100 so that the price difference with the i7 become quite large, I decided to go with the Core 2 and I am glad I did.
First off, the screen is glossy and only of average brightness but the viewing angles and the ability to turn the contrast all the way up and still see a good picture a plus. Second, there is no bluetooth but there are so many tiny dongles these days it isn't a huge issue for your mouse or headphones - just use of one the three usb ports. Third, the reason to buy this is for gaming and I am happy to say I was able to load all my games on the spacious 320gb hard drive with room to spare and they are all playable anywhere from medium to ultra settings. I play almost exclusively real-time strategy titles such as StarCraft II and the Command and Conquer titles. They all run really good.
The build quality is phenomenal on this thing. It is fun to just look at and admire. Being able to change the lighting in five zones and in various ways makes night computing perfect. The small keyboard is a little tougher to type on than a chic-lit style on a netbook but the razor sharp backlighting makes it work out fine after a little practice. Touch typing works great. The wrist area does not show fingerprints, the mouse has a great texture and really soft press buttons but I use an external mouse.
My first unit did not work the second day. It went black screen on me and Amazon shipped me a replacement the very next day that has been perfect. I also went into the bios on the second one and enabled turbo mode and it works - no blue screens.
I spent all day loading up my gaming titles and look forward to playing on the go and around the house a lot more now. I was also pleased that 1080p YouTube worked flawlessly and my programs seem snappy. So far, so good, enjoying it. The kids love it too and like to change the keyboard to pink for the girls and incredible hulk green for the boys.
A fun toy, I hope to enjoy for a long time, and recommend.

ASUS U53JC-C1 15.6-Inch Laptop (Bamboo) Review

ASUS U53JC-C1 15.6-Inch Laptop (Bamboo)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay so this laptop is truly awesome after 2 months of use (EDITED), the battery life is awesome, I was in a study group for college and some girl asked me "uh, oh! youre gonna need a outlet soon, right?" and I said "No, I have 30% left.....which means 3 hours!" The best charge I've gotten is about 9 1/2 hours, they're really not lying, just make sure you have it on power saver mode. I dont really see that much of a performance difference when it's on this setting.
This laptop is nothing described as in the other review giving it one star. Maybe manufacturing on that one went bad, but otherwise it is an excellent laptop. I just got it today though, but I wanted to save it from that horrible review, only bad things are the way oily fingerprints show up on the outside, but its better than having a cheapy glossy finish. So just wipe it off every so often. I will update this review in the time being as I use the laptop more.
EDITED:
Wow what a unique laptop, the bamboo finish, or shall I say wood!, is awesome. It may attract a little bit more oil from your fingers, but a great sacrifice instead of having to deal with a cheapy glossy finish on the wood. The laptop is fast, haven't noticed any glitches. The touchpad buttons are firm, not hard to push, I find that I am in more control and that I'm not accidentally pressing random things because of the sensitive buttons. The chiclet keyboard is awesome, way better than any other keyboard I've used- especially the mac. The sound system is good, even better with headphones plugged in for some reason. Graphics....awesome. Numberpad--rare and convenient.....ASUS Expres AMAZING! its so cool is an alternate boot up option if you dont have time to wait and you can access all that you need to in literally 2 seconds, no joke at all. Way to stand out ASUS.
So this laptop is not only flashy and unique, but it's functionality is nothing but exceptional. So glad I trusted my instinct.

ASUS N82JQ-X1 14-Inch Laptop (Dark Brown) Review

ASUS N82JQ-X1 14-Inch Laptop (Dark Brown)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Had the laptop for two weeks and it started to blue screen, shutdown, and pixelate on a clean factory system. The wife called and ASUS tech support asked her to run a virus scan. She told them a full scan ran the previous night and nothing was detected. They told her to call back when the crashes occur again. What?
When it crashed for a four time I ran some diagnostics (memtest, SMART, SpeedFan, and windbg for the dump log) and found the issue was related to video (but more likely an overall heating issue). Found that the 720QM is a hot little puppy and hard to cool in a laptop. Sent the laptop to ASUS and they had it for 2 weeks. No customer contact or update on their RMA status check for the entire duration. After we got the laptop back (now with a new motherboard) it still runs very hot (cannot have this on your lap and the left side of the palm rest gets to 115F after 15 minutes of watching a show on Hulu). Oh, I forgot to mention that the first boot after since RMA return we had to call ASUS back. Since the motherboard was replaced our Windows 7 product code was no longer valid. I called ASUS and they wanted us to ship the laptop back. I instead called MS following the activation suggestions and MS got me back on track without a hassle. I also decided to burn the five recovery DVDs to make sure I have a recovery option. Well, the second DVD write fails on several types of DVD brands. Don't rely on ASUS for recovery media. Use Ghost, Windows Backup, and/or Clonezilla for your recovery options.
Overall: the laptop is fast, the graphics are good (not great) for newer games, the heat is a serious issue, and tech support is not very helpful. I would recommend an Core i5 that comes with optimus technology instead of a model with Core i7.
