Netgear EVA700 Digital Entertainer Review

Netgear EVA700 Digital Entertainer
Average Reviews:

Before I bought this unit, I tried the D-Link DSM-520 for about a month before giving up. This unit is identical to the DSM in function with one BIG difference-- it is stable! My advise to those not wanting to tinker- skip this technology for a year or so, others read on...
Install
~~~~
I hooked it up to a wireless router and PC with a few external hard drives and it works (almost) flawlessly. First of all, like others said, do NOT install the software that it comes with and also forget Intel Viv technology installs. Just install one of the free (or almost free) software like TVersity (my fav.), Wizd or Twonkyvision. However, except for Wizd, you can't search for a particular album/artist/genre. You have to scroll through menu after menu to find a movie/song/photo.
Media
~~~~~
I am currently streaming a few hundred CDs in FLAC (lossless format) which is noticeably better than the very best MP3 format. For DVDs, I simply have the server software pointed to the Folders that have the DVD (VOB) files. The player does a very good job of picking up subtitles automatically too. I have NOT installed the photo folder as I find the usage completely useless for my needs. I shoot 6MP raw format images. I can't see myself browsing through tens of thousands of images and then waiting for 1 minute for an image to load up!
Conclusion
~~~~~~~~~
All in all, a good system for those that are not intimidated by network setups and server programs but want an uncluttered music system and (almost) instant access to movies, music and photos.
Yamaha RX-V365BL 500 Watt 5-Channel Home Theater Receiver Review
Yamaha RX-V365BL 500 Watt 5-Channel Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:
I generally like Yamaha products but this receiver has one huge flaw. The HDMI outs do not support audio sound. I ran separate optical audio outputs from cable box and CD player. The one HDMI out on the reciever only worked with DVD not Cable box or DTV inputs. So don't plan on running a separate TV from the HDMI out on the reciever. The sound quality is good and the functions are easy to learn with the exception of the scene feature. Really not that well explained. I like the reciever and was able to work around the HDMI issue but think that this is a huge oversight on Yamaha's part. I hope this review is helpful.
I was looking for a secondary monitor to use with my HTPC to use at the breakfast table when I didn't want to turn on the big plasma, and thought this might be interesting because it's LED backlit (edgelit really) and had Netflix and some other widgets.
It turns out to be really cool... good picture quality - not as much contrast ratio as a much pricier, larger TV obviously, but decent for casual TV watching, good colors and viewing angles. The Netflix support works really well, streamed HD over the wireless without any issues, apparently the same quality as my Roku HD box - that alone is worth buying it for.
Some of the widgets are pretty useless (I'm looking at you, CBS), they're basically just ad channels, and I haven't found news that's more than two lines long. It would be nice if there were a web browser for it, or a dedicated NY Times app.
The sound quality isn't bad for a TV... you'd get better sound adding some cheap computer speakers with a subwoofer, but I don't really blame the TV, it's so skinny there's not really room for decent speakers.
All in all, quite a nice toy, great for a dorm or kitchen.
I was a committed DLP fan before undergoing a conversion experience on Friday April 17th. I had planned to replace my Samsung DLP with a Mitbushi DLP or LaserVue. In the final hours, I just couldn't go through with it.
A major Los Angeles vendor set up a display with the UN55B7000 sandwiched between a LaserVue and a Kuro 151. The results were pretty plain to my eyes. The Luxia pretty well crushed both of them. The cult of Kuro will denounce me for heresy and blaspheme, but this is what I saw. About 1 hour of fiddling with the settings on LaserVue did not change the situation much. The Kuro was locked in at calibrated settings which the employees would not allow me to change. Evidently, it was fully tuned up. Once again, this left me with the impression that a fully calibrated Kuro is an over-rated beast indeed. No wonder Pioneer quit the market.
The bottom line: I bought this unit the next day. It took about 2 hours to tune up after I took it out of the box. [Use the natural color setting. Customize motion smoothing to 7 for jitter control and 7 for blur control, or shut it off entirely] Since then it has been pretty astounding. Unbelievable color. Unbelievable reds. Unbelievable contrast ratios. Unbelievable black levels. Very bright. Generates no perceivable heat. Does not get hot. The detail and sharpness and depth of image is truly astounding. I have never seen anything that can compare, and I have been shopping for several months now.
Cons
I am still questioning the merit of the 120Hz motion smoothing technology. It does weird things to slow motion instant replays. It does stranger things to 24fps movies. Seems to work best with live actions sports and HDTV programs shot on digital. You can always turn it off. Blu-rays seem more natural with the technology switched off. Ultimately, Blu-Ray looks magnificent either way.
Advice
A word of advice for the first reviewer and everybody else. You should never, never, never use the speakers on your HDTV. All HDTVs are equipped with pathetic 10 watt reference speakers that stink. All HDTV owners should invest in some sort of home theater surround sound system. It doesn't have to be that expensive. Even a $300 Home Theater in a Box will make a world of difference.
Standard Definition channels looks great via DirectTV. I have yet upgraded my TIVO DirectTV box to HD, but the SD pictures actually look very good. SD picture cannot be compared to HD picture, but this TV does display SD picture very well.
DVD picture from the XBOX 360 via HDMI looks great.
1080P games looks excellent. No lag issue.
Connected a laptop via VGS to the TV to watch some online movies and they look great! What a surprise.
Opinions about complains I have seem online.
1. Reflection on the screen
I have this TV in my bed room and I mainly use it at night with minimal lighting. If reflection really annoys you, you may want to consider LZ85 or other bands that use matte screen. IMHO, picture on glossy screen produces much better picture that matte screen. I compared LZ800, LZ85 and a few other bands matte screens side by side in a retail store to draw the conclusion.
2. Fan noise
Not noticable unless I stick my ear next to the TV (like an inch apart from the TV).
3. Color Text not sharp
Not using the TV as a monitor to read color text. Therefore, not a concern.
4. Backlight Bleeding
Fortunately, not experiencing it.
The online price for this TV is an excellent buy because of the quality, and craftmanship. I am very impressed with Panasonic whom can focus on Plasma for 2008 line up, but still manage to produce an extremely high quality LCD. This model definitely is comparable or even better than Sony XBR 6/7 or Samsung 6/7 series. A big plus with Panansonic is her web site provides all specific details about the TV.
Good luck searching and recommend you look at the TV in person before making your final decision.
After waiting for a few years for a great deal, I finally punched the 'Buy' button and am I glad...:)
This was my list of 'Must Have'
1. Less than $1000 (total cost inclusive of tax and shipping). Got a sweet deal for $1288 inclusive free shipping, no tax, blue ray player and a home theater ($450 promotion which I later sold..nice! ).
2. 46 inch
3. 120 Hz and high contrast ratio. Yes 120 Hz and 100,000 dynamic contrast ratio
4. High reviews
5. Matt finish. Yes it has a matt finish
6. Internet Connectivity, DLNA and USB plus HDMI in the frontAmazon is the BEST when it comes to price, delivery and customer service. The TV was delivered in less than a week although initially it showed delivery after a month.
The picture quality is exquisite, colors are unbelievable and the aesthetics of the product design excellent. Watching HD quality videos, channels was an amazing experience in itself. Having a red eye in the morning is a given side effect !
Ethernet connectivity and Streaming videos is the future and I really like the fact I don't need another device to watch videos. Amazon on Demand, Netflix and most importantly Youtube takes care of most of my need. Now only if it could have a browser built in and an ability to connect a blue tooth keyboard, it would make it a complete package.
Streaming thru a media server is easy, so is connecting thru the USB. Having access to HDMI makes it a breeze to connect and remove accessories.
This is a great product!
BTW, if someone is looking for measurements for this TV ...
FINAL UPDATE 04/01/2010:
I have to return my Vizio due to the constant re-booting, happens a lot when I try to utilize the PIP/POP feature and just tonight when I tried to activate the CC when I was using the input for TV. VIZIO tech support has said that this is not normal and wanted to ship a replacement but I said no because:
1) Weird side panel which VIZIO now admits they will be correcting in a re-design of the exterior housing by late spring 2010 or early summer 2010
2) The very unlit remote with too few special feature buttons and poor spacing between the buttons
3) Tech support unable to say when or if the USB ports will ever be turned on!
4) Tech support also said the use of LED back lighting is the reason for the poor on-screen space utilization when the PIP/POP feature is on. Tech support said this will be resolved in the PRO series which they say will have more LED zones to allow for better on-screen space utilization when POP is activated.
I do not know what I will be getting but one room is about to have no TV soon...egad!!! I will soon have some pretty upset teenagers in my house.
Updated review 03/08/2010: Since the review below I would like to add some updates for those interested. One reviewer stated something about "stains/shadows" in the right corners but I could not find any on my unit nor the 4" shadow that from the reviewer's description would run diagonally across the screen. I am looking but nothing. I still rate the picture a 5 and the audio a solid 4 but the remote though is just too difficult to use in the dark or even in low lighting situations. Given VIZIO's design for the remote to replace your other remotes it is not useful as that due to lack of a glow button. The remote is still good but only for part of the day and again the remote still is lacking many dedicated "special" feature buttons.
My biggest concern though is the TV "locking up and re-booting" which it seems to do more frequently when I utilized the PIP/POP feature. I have a call in to VIZIO and several e-mails and they are currently researching the issue. I think for the price the TV is a great bargain and while I am no videophile/audiophile I think again for this price range the quality of the audio/video is excellent but they do need to fix certain issues. The re-booting, the missing glow and extra feature buttons on the remote, the side panel toggle switch functions, turning on all the USB ports, and the PIP/POP to better utilize the screen space and fix the audio shutting off from the main screen when you turn off the PIP/POP. The VIA apps rock and really make the TV a joy to use, I hope they add YouTube soon.
Like other reviewers, myself included: BE WARY OF THE REVIEWS ON THE VIZIO SITE.
The TV itself is great but not as slim as I expected it to be given how much slimmer my one year plus old VIZIO SV470XVT1A" LCD is. Let's start with what is good about the VIZIO 55". The remote is good and basically takes over all your other remotes and the on screen set-up of the unit is relatively straight forward as well.The wired Ethernet connection worked flawlessly but I can not speak to the wireless capabilities as I did not use that feature. The picture for me was much cleaner and brighter than my VIZIO 47" and to me needed no further adjustments. The VIA apps were easy to access, use and more are being added such as PANDORA...added 2 days after I got my TV. One of the main reasons I love VIZIO is the PIP and more specifically the Picture outside Picture (POP)capabilities of their TVs. I believe VIZIO is the only company that provides the POP to their TVs. PLEASE NOTE as of 03/01/2010: My earlier review said the volume level needed to be very high to be heard clearly but I now realize I am "deaf" lol and so to me the sound is now very good.The price for features and quality was very good to excellent and really can not be beat but...
This Vizio 55" was really put out before its time as many items are either not working or will be at a supposedly later time or the design layout was weird and needed to be corrected before being sent out. I think VIZIO skimped on the number of non-HDMI connections giving you just one each of Component and A/V inputs, if your like me you have several legacy non-HDMI components. I say skimped because VIZIO seems to be reducing inputs on its TVs compared to models from less than a year ago, the VF551XVT has 2 components and 2 AV inputs per the online manual. Yes the VF552XVT has Ethernet capability and VIA apps but I mean if they want to continue to be a standout from SAMSUNG and other high ends then they need to keep these extras as well.
What I think is the real design FLAW: the side panel controls in the manual on page 11 shows a logical layout of the controls but the actual TV itself does not look like that layout but rather: Menu and Channel Up are on the same toggle switch; The Channel Down and Volume Up are on the same toggle switch; and the Volume Down and Input are on the same toggle switch. When I called VIZIO (twice) both times they said the manual picture is generic and applies to many of their TVs and the picture is not an accurate reflection of this model but at the same time did acknowledge that the design of the side controls was non-intuitive.
The first time I used Netflix it seemed to lock up my TV and I was unable to turn it off via remote or the side panel off button. I finally unplugged it and called VIZIO who said that the TV can lock up and in the future hold the side power button down for 30 seconds or more, the issue never happened again. UPDATE 03/01/2010: Over the past few days since the NETFLIX LOCKUP the TV will on its own for no reason I can discern "reboot". I will update if it continues but it has happened now about 5 times. I think it may be because of updates to the apps but I am guessing. I have not called VIZIO yet on this batch of reboots but will if it continues. I am very happy with my VIA apps and the new addition of PANDORA but wish the other apps that already have icons were active, I am greedy lol.
I should also mention that none of the 3 side USB ports are activated as well but I saw that an earlier reviewer says they are but on my TV they are not. I called VIZIO and they said not at this time. This again is weird as the model before this has one USB port and that is active per the on screen manual. If you look at the on-screen manual for the VF551XVT it indicates in the manual the port is active and even has a corresponding button to use the port on the remote control. No such control is on the VF552XVT remote, in fact...
I think the VF552XVT has a good remote and while it does take over many of your other remotes flawlessly, the remote given its size does not have ANY dedicated buttons to call up many of the most used features of the TV. Features such as: changing the TV aspect ratio; changing the PIP size; changing the PIP input source and changing the audio from the Main screen to the PIP input; a mode button to switch between all the pre-set color settings; nor buttons to select the input source. My old VIZIO 47" remote had ALL THESE EXTRA FEATURE BUTTONS AND MORE, some were used a lot and others not so much but always better to HAVE THAN NOT HAVE. TRUST ME FROM PRIOR EXPERIENCE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE THE PIP INPUT SOURCE AND AUDIO AND SIZE IS FANTASTIC AS WELL AS BEING ABLE TO CHANGE THE TV ASPECT RATIO AND MODE. I believe VIZIO either spent too much on the QWERTY keypad or just went giddy adding the QWERTY keypad and forgot how having these special feature buttons on the remote make using the TV much easier. Easier in that use of...
The on screen menu is fantastic but calling it up blocks out about a 25% of the left side of the screen from top to bottom which is very disconcerting especially if you are trying to make adjustments to the picture. It would have been more prudent if the menu had to be so large to then have the balance of the screen show the movie/broadcast but in "squashed" form without having that portion of the picture covered by the menu. Further the POP feature shows the two images side by side but with black bars top and bottom which reduces the overall size of the POP images by about 40-60%...no kidding. I mean you have a big screen with all this unused space when you utilized the POP feature.
I love the VIZIO TV price point with features but clearly this TV NEEDS the USB ports activated and the side panel issues addressed and many more dedicated buttons on the remote to avoid having to always call up a very distracting on-screen menu. The remote while very good is LACKING A MUCH NEEDED GLOW BUTTON and more separation between the buttons. If you buy the TV you will see what I mean by button separation. Look at the on screen manual for the VF552XVT and look at the remote page (enlarge that page about 300%) and compare it to any remotes you have at home and look at those button separation distance, in the dark you will appreciate those button separation distances especially with no glow button. In addition I think the TV is too thick given these are newer models and should be to me much slimmer. My old VIZIO (47" LCD) is about 3 1/2" at its thickest and 2" at its slimmest while the VF552XVT at its slimmest is over 4" thick and at its thickest about 5".
At this time 03/01/2010 I am think of doing more research and maybe getting another LCD brand, SAMSUNG as I like their picture quality but really would like to stay with VIZIO if they can fix the remote issues and USB activation soon. I also hate to give up my POP feature which seems to be unique to VIZIO?I RATE THE OVERALL TV A 3 BUT PICTURE IS A 5 AND SOUND IS A 4. WOULD I CONTINUE TO BUY...Read more›
I've had my Vizio SV472XVT TV for around 2 months so far (I bought it directly from Vizio in a special deal they had pre-release). I can't say enough good things about it.
First, the LED backlit screen produces an excellent picture. I would go so far as to say it's on PAR with any Samsung or Sony that I've seen. Blu-ray movies and PS3 games look perfect.
The collection of "widgets" is amazing. Netflix Streaming, Amazon-on-Demand, Vudu, Pandora, Rhapsody, Twitter, Facebook, eBay, Flickr, various Yahoo widgets, the list goes on. Some games like Sudoku and Texas Hold'em, which are neat, but would be better if you could watch TV while playing them. They have even added widgets since I bought the TV. That was actually an unusual experience seeing my TV doing an automatic firmwear update. My TV is connected to the internet through my wireless G router and a cable internet connection and streaming video quality is excellent. I've taken to watching a lot of Netflix HD streaming (there's a good amount of TV shows that stream in HD. The movie selection isn't as great), but I've also watched streamed HD video from Amazon on Demand and Vudu (HDX on Vudu which is 1080p). I haven't had a single video quality problem streaming from any of these sources.
The bluetooth remote is a bit of a love/hate relationship though.
The Loves:
1. Having a full qwerty keyboard is awesome, especially while searching through the widgets, or posting to twitter or facebook through the TV.
2. The bluetooth connectivity is great. I don't have to point it at the TV to change the volume or turn it on. It unfortunately still needs to be pointed at the cable box. That's something I can live with.
3. It was very easy to setup.
The Hates:
1. I was hoping a bluetooth remote to be able to communicate with my PS3, unfortunately I'm still using a PS3 controller when watching blu-rays.
2. It's just not very comfortable. It's square and there was no thought to ergonomics. And the shiny finish is a fingerprint magnet.
3. It doesn't have all the buttons that I would like from my cable remote. Page Up/Down and Day +- are the main ones. The absence of Page Up/Down can be a drag and at times leaves me reaching for the cable remote, the Day +- isn't as much of a loss.
All-in-all, it was absolutely worth the price and I would buy it again. Although, I would consider the 55-inch as well.
Unit failed after 2 months of very light use. I had the dreaded Mitsubishi blinking green power light issue. From what I have read this is a very common problem, I even had the unit plugged into a surge protector. They tell me that the internal power supply blew out. The Repair shop can not get the Main PCB that blew out in a timely manor so thankfully I am getting a store credit. I will go with my original plan and get a Samsung.
Mitsubishi Diamond Series WD-82838 82-Inch 3D DLP HDTV Review
Mitsubishi Diamond Series WD-82838 82-Inch 3D DLP HDTV
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
I purchased this TV to replace a Panasonic 65" Plasma TV. First of all let me say how delighted I am with Amazon's customer service and policies, when I first ordered the TV I mistakenly ordered the non-3D version of it, and did not realize my mistake until after it had been shipped to me. However, Amazon's policies on TV purchases made it possible for me to cancel the order and receive a complete refund! As far as the TV itself is concerned, the main drawback I have found is it's relative dimness when compared to the plasma TV it replaced. I really found it necessary to only use this TV in a darkened room to really appreciate it. The other drawbacks I found were 1) The TV was completely dead upon original installation, and even though I was using professional installers it took them an hour of messing with it trying to get a picture, before they called Mitsubishi customer service who advised them to unplug the TV, wait a minute or two, and thn plug in again to allow the internal computer to reset itself. Secondly, I am using the TV with a Sony PS3 as it's 3D input, and after hooking everything up, I was unable to get a 3D image. When I called Mitsubishi, they told me it was necessary to return the PS3 to Sony for a firmware update. This was not true. After reading reviews of other 3D TVs I found it was only necessary to properly set up the display properties in the Playstation settings menu. Once all this was done, I found the overall experience to be absolutely breathtaking with both Blu-Ray 3D movies and the Avatar 3D game. I am using the Mitsubishi shutter glasses and the overall experience is much better than with the red/blue or polarized glasses you are given in the theaters showing 3D movies. I recommend this TV if you want the size and are able to darken the room you are using it in. I have never watched a 3D plasma set so I cannot comment on whether their 3D is as impressive as on this set.
VIZIO M550NV 55-inch Full HD 1080p 120Hz LED LCD HDTV Review
VIZIO M550NV 55-inch Full HD 1080p 120Hz LED LCD HDTV
Average Reviews:
We bought this on Memorial Day at a local store - price was a little cheaper than Amazon, plus no shipping cost, so we got a great deal. First off, the packaging for this TV is HUGE - the only way we could have put this in our van would have been to lay the third row seats down AND take out one of the 2nd row seats, as the box is too wide to fit in the aisle between them. Luckily we have a truck and had no problems fitting in it. If you plan to put this TV in a cabinet/entertainment center, you'd better buy a big one. Due to the shape of the frame, which includes the speakers on either side, this TV is wider than a typical 55" - it measures about 55 1/2" at its widest point, so is too wide for most cabinets that say they will fit a 55" TV. Wall mounting or mounting on an open table setup would be no problem. OK, enough about the size of this monster - you get the picture :)
Setup was a snap - got it out of the box, hooked up a Toshiba DVD recorder/VCR combo via HDMI and a standard def DirecTV DVR to the composite A/V (no HD DVR yet). On a HD signal, this TV has an incredible picture - bright image, great blacks (some TVs have problems with dark/night scenes, but this one handles them wonderfully). Standard-def images (480i) can be grainy, but that's simply a factor of size vs. resolution and is only really noticed if you're close to the screen. Viewing from across our family room (about 12' from tv to couch) is fine. We also connected an antenna to pull in over-the-air signals. The tuner is pretty good, and picked up all the UHF networks in our area, about 30 miles away. The local CBS affiliate broadcasts on a VHF frequency and we can't pick it up - but we can't get it on any of our TVs, so I can't say this tv is any better or worse in that regard.
Connection to our wireless network was quick and easy, and streaming from Netflix, Vudu and Amazon works great. I haven't tried any of the other services available, but there are plenty to choose from. The Netflix software on this TV is better than on the LG blu-ray player we have connected to another TV - this one will allow you to find movies that aren't in your instant queue, while the LG will ONLY play items in your queue, so that's a bonus. Vudu plays well in SD or 720 format, but frequently pauses in 1080p - we need a faster internet connection to support full HD downloads. DivX movies downloaded in full 1080p look fantastic when played from the Toshiba player over HDMI.
This TV comes with a remote that connects to the TV via Bluetooth. It remembers which equipment is connected to the various inputs, and automatically changes the controls to match the input equipment - really nice! I found that it will control all my equipment, and since it works via bluetooth, you don't have to have direct line-of-sight to the TV. Wish that the bluetooth part worked for my satellite equipement too! Programmable remotes will operate this TV, but depending on how old they are, they may not be able to hit all the features of the tv - our older directv remotes will operate the basic features, but only the newer models will change the input source - so you may want to use the remote that came with the TV. We have smaller kids, and wanted to limit their use of the tv remote, because it has a slide-out keyboard similar to those on some cell phones to make posting to facebook (one of the apps that comes on the tv) easy. Since our youngest is 5, we thought it might be best to keep that remote out of harm's way.
All in all, this is a fabulous TV for the money - it's an LED for less than many LCDs of smaller size. I was considering the new Sharp LED with the 4th 'yellow' pixel, but after seeing it in person, couldn't justify paying nearly 50% more for a smaller (52") screen. The LED runs mucher cooler than plasma - while shopping for TVs we walked through a local Sears store, and you could feel the heat radiating off the plasma screens - that alone steered us away from plasma. LED seemed too high until we found this Vizio - we'd gotten a 32" Vizio with 1080p capability for our bedroom at Christmas, so knew that the Vizio had the quality of the bigger names, but without the price premium of Sony, Samsung or LG. When we get ready to replace our other tube TVs, we'll be looking at the Vizio M-series as our top choice - just in a smaller size!
Mitsubishi Diamond Series WD-65838 65-Inch 3D DLP HDTV Review
Mitsubishi Diamond Series WD-65838 65-Inch 3D DLP HDTV
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
I researched many TVs before buying this one. I focused on Plasma, LED, and LCD sets. I had settled on a 65inch plasma and went to the store to purchase one. The salesman asked me if I had looked at DLP? I didn't even know they still made DLP sets to be honest. I was very impressed with the picture quality of the Mits DLP TVs.Then.......he showed me a football game in 3D on this set.....it was AWESOME! If you are a sports fan - do yourself a favor and go to a store and watch demo's on these TVs - it is like you are at the event. During all viewing, the black levels and white levels are very good and the color is sharp and infinately adjustable. You would have to spend 2X-3X as much on a top end plasma or LED to rival the picture quality and 3D capability of the Mits 65838.
I ended up choosing the 838 model rather than the 738 due to the additional sound capability of the 838. As I was shopping for the flat panel TVs I noticed the sound was never very good. The room we have the TV in is pretty big and I need good sound. When I bought the TV, Mits was throwing in a free Polk subwoofer with purchase. The sub can be hooked directly to the 838. That subwoofer + the 16 built in speakers produces phenominal sound. I also have a full AV receiver/surround system hooked up, but I did not want to mess with having to power everything up every time I wanted to watch TV - now I don't have to!
The brightness and viewing angles are good on this set. I have the TV on a 19inch stand. No noticable dimming when standing/sitting if you are more than 6 feet away. I would estimate that viewing angles are good to 150-160 degrees without any real noticable dimming.
Lastly, I find the menu system easy to use. The TV was easy to set up and navigate with. The only downsides I have found to this set:
1. 3D capabilities - it is still early and you will have to buy the Mits 3D adapter set to view a lot of the content. They have been promising a firmware update to the 738 and 838 series to take car of this, but nothing yet.
2. There is a noticable delay when switching between HD channels. Folks in the forums have commented on this, regardless of service type (Comcast, DirectTV, etc).
3. The factory default settings for color/brightness/contrast are not great. I found I had to spend some time in the advanced menu getting it dialed in to get the proper contrast/brightness/color. It is not hard to do and the menu is easy to understand, it just takes some time.
Be sure to see our UPDATE BELOW on this review:
5 stars when we bought it.
1 or 0 stars now, 5 months later.
We have been looking for a new TV for quite some time, thinking we would go with a 47" LCD. But then we happened to see some of the new LED TV's which took us on a whole new quest. And this is where we ended up. With the Vizio xvt473sv. The picture is just fabulous. I can't begin to stress that. We are not young folks by any stretch of the imagination. 3D didn't interest us. (It's fun at the theater but I don't want to watch it at home.) But this TV has true LED, with true back-lighting (not just edge lighting) and it's beyond terrific for viewing.
The pictures are sharp and crisp. Like when you're at the eye doctor and he says, "Which is better, A or B?" And B jumps out at you because it is like the best you've ever seen? Well folks, that's this television. Not kidding.
We have only had it for one week so I can't yet comment on the internet apps. Everything else is hooked up now - sorry, we work and only have limited time in the evenings - but so far it all works flawlessly. Our bonanza was discovering that we get HD channels for free because this TV has an integrated quam tuner. I'm no tech geek and I have no idea what that is but that's what the nice cable lady told me. (And because it's so new we've had to make our own list of HD channels because we live in the boonies and our cable folks don't have the list for our area yet.) AM I complaining??? No way!
My one and only criticism of this TV is that when you enter a channel in the bluetooth remote, it takes about 4-5 seconds for the TV to go to that channel. That is annoying. Surely Vizio will be coming out with a fix for this soon. (Are you listening Vizio?)
But I tell you, once you get to the channel, you forget that annoyance because the picture is so incredible. It's like that person in the box is in the room with you. It looks that real. Colors are gorgeous. Bright and vibrant!
The TV doesn't swivel on it's base but given that it's so large, I can't imagine needing it to swivel. Tonight we watched the CMA Awards on a non-HD channel. And the picture was still awesome. I can't wait to watch some college football this weekend.
When we get the internet part up and running, I'll be back with an update on this review. In the meantime, go for it. You won't be sorry. This is the LED-TV to which all others will be compared. Seriously. It is fabulous!!!
2 weeks later: I want to add a few more comments. My DH has downloaded several "apps" and they are easy, intuitive to use. BTW, this is not like a computer screen. VIZIO has it set up to download "apps" to prevent viruses from getting on your nice new TV. And they were really helpful when I called their customer service number to ask some questions before we purchased this TV. We still love it. The picture is just beyond belief. Literally, the detail you can see with it is just amazing.
4 MONTHS LATER: We are having problems with the TV just shutting off in the middle of a show. Literally. We'll be watching a show and then zap, black screen. This has been ongoing for the last 3 months. We've called customer support, gone through the reboot process, time and time again. By the time we get the picture back up, the show is over and we've missed it. Now get this: Vizio tells me that this is a KNOWN PROBLEM on this TV model. They say the TV is recalculating for optimal performance. That's a joke. THEY KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY DON'T HAVE A FIX FOR IT. NO FIX. AND YET THEY ARE STILL SELLING THE TV????
It's a huge disappointment. The picture is gorgeous. Everything I said above is true about the TV's features and viewing. It's wonderful - when it works. We spent a lot of money on this TV only to be stuck with a lemon? And absolutely awful customer service policies at VIZIO. Oh their reps are nice but they can't do a thing.
MAY 29, 2011 UPDATE: In the last 2 months the TV has not "blacked out" anymore. Maybe Vizio stopped sending the computer chip updates that caused the blackouts? (maybe they read my review?)...at any rate this particular "blackout" problem has ceased...for now. That said, I will continue the updates here so readers will know. Honestly, we still love the picture on this TV - the picture is bright, crisp, and clear. The TV doesn't suck energy. The apps are easy to use. So time will tell how this unfolds.
VIZIO M470NV 47-Inch 1080p LED LCD HDTV with VIZIO  Internet Application, Black
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
We've had this Vizio 47 inch TV for just over a month now, and the family loves it. Setup took maybe 5 minutes, using HDMI hookups for incoming Digital cable, DVD, X-box 360, and Playstation 3. Took an extra 5 minutes to hard-wire the internet cable, and connect optical audio output to the Home Theatre system.
Picture quality is excellent, with the very high contrast ratio....Black is really black, unlike on my 1-year old Sony Bravia
2 Million:1 vs 30K:1 contrast ratios). Didn't really need to do much to optimize the picture quality. Blue-Ray movies played off the PS3 look awesome. Also found it was easy to adjust the lip-sync for TV sound to make it match the surround sound system.
I don't know if the LED lighting is what improves the picture quality or not, but it looks great.
The remote is easy to use, but seems to have a flaw, continually telling me that the batteries are almost dead, when they are hours fresh. Fortunately, everything still works just fine.
Only reason this review is not 5 stars is the limited choices on internet services. Would be nice to be able to have a browser for full internet access. However, Netflix, the main service we use works great. Have watched a bunch of movies, and the quality is almost always excellent, much better than we used to get using the Netflix app on the XBox 360.
I would recommend this TV to anyone looking for a good quality, affordable TV. I can't imagine what more one could get by doubling the cost, as many brands do.
This is an excellent TV. I got it on eBay for $475.00, the setup was very easy and it connected to the Internet without any problems. The only application that wouldn't work was Pandora. A live chat with technical support wasn't any help. They wanted me to clear the entire memory. But I knew that all of the other Internet applications were working just fine and that it wasn't a problem with the Internet connection. Pandora would load all of my radio stations and then it would just freeze up. The little loading circle in the top right-hand corner would just keep going around and around. I started doing an Internet search and found the solution. I will share it with you in a moment. I really feel that Vizio Tech support should know how to fix this problem, after all people have been complaining about this for more than seven months now. So if Pandora doesn't work here is the simple solution that I found on a Facebook thread. God bless the person who figured this out.
From the HDTV settings widget;
1. Go to "Network"
2. Manual setup
3. DHCP - Off
This fixed Pandora on my set as well as many people on Facebook who also have a wireless connection. However, those with an Ethernet connection may not find that this solution works, but it might be worth a try.
I would like to see a widget for an Internet browser. This seems like the only thing that is missing from this fabulous WiFi TV.
Netflix does work on this television. You need to have a subscription to Netflix. To set it up go to the Netflix widget on your TV and get the code. Then log on to your computer and find the TV set up on Netflix's webpage (this took a little searching to find but it is there). Enter the code on the webpage and wait a few minutes. You will be able to watch all of the instant downloads after that.
This television has a 120 Hz refresh rate which is much better than most TVs in the same class. You get a lot for your money with this model. I would highly recommend it to all my friends and family with confidence.
Wanted a bedroom TV that had full 1080p, network interface and Yahoo! Widgets (or similar capabilities). Most other TV manufacturers offer this combination of features only in models of 40 inches or larger -- I wanted a smaller size for a simple bedroom TV.
First, the good things... Very nice picture that remains clear and viewable even from way off angle -- this is its strongest feature. Also, the built-in Yahoo! Widgets include being able to view movies or listen to music ordered from services such as Netflix and Pandora without an outboard box. Further, one of the Widgets brings in TV Guide over the Internet, which is helpful if your cable company can't seem to successfully transmit a TV Guide (or similar function) over their own cable. I also found the remote control to actually be pretty good in the sense that the different buttons are of different shapes and sizes that you can actually find the correct buttons to push by touch without looking at them.
Second, the OK thing... I have to echo, to some extent, some of the other reviews that criticize the audio -- it's not really that bad, but I've had other LCD TVs of similar size that did better. I must say, though, that the audio is clear, so you won't find yourself unable to understand what someone is saying when they're speaking softly, and the speakers output a full enough range that you won't find yourself wondering where an instrument disappeared to when listening to a piece of music. I have encountered other small TVs (both old CRT types and current-day LCD types) that have had audio far, far worse than this -- some were so bad that the whole casing of the TV would vibrate when certain instruments were played in a piece of music -- this TV definitely does not have anything like that problem.
Third, the problem... It actually crashes! This has to be the weirdest thing I've ever experienced or have ever said about a TV, but this thing actually crashes to the extent that it completely ignores the remote and its built-in button controls, and can only be brought back under control by unplugging it! I'm guessing, but I think it's a simple case of overheating, because the crashes occur after it's been on for a number of hours to the point where the back side feels awfully hot. The heat is a little surprising, since this is an edge-lit LED TV, and not one that uses CCFL backlighting. Also, it doesn't seem to matter whether you use any of the Widget applications, or not -- the crashing occurs even when you do nothing more than feed it video from a cable box or other source. So, the crashing doesn't seem to be precipitated by running any particular Widget application.
Fourth, some missing information... It is not made clear on Vizio's website or even if you download a PDF of the user's manual, but this TV comes with an external brick-type power supply. This item caught me by surprise as most LCD TVs of this size (in my experience) have the power supply built in. This is not a big deal, unless you intend to wall-mount it, in which case, you'll need to decide what to do with the brick power supply.
All-in-all, I would be perfectly happy with this TV if I didn't occasionally need to unplug it in order to bring it back from crashing. It's this weird crashing behavior that is actually causing me to consider returning it.
VIZIO E322VL 32-Inch LCD HDTV with VIZIO Internet Application, Black Review
This is our first non-CRT television, so it's a big jump from our 20 inch portable.
It connected fine to the internet, and we were up and running with all the local channels pretty quickly.
The picture seemed a bit dark, but I think it was the broadcast. NetFlix videos were nearly flawless.
Our Wii console connected and worked fine. We don't have a DVD player hooked up to it, so I can't speak to the quality of DVD movies (it's in our lower basement level).
A couple of things:
1. Pandora app: only worked after I disabled the TV's DHCP setting.
2. The USB Port is useless - won't show photos. VIZIO Tech Support (very nice, by the way) indicated that the USB port is not activated for this model, but a firmware update will be "coming soon." I don't believe them. I think there is something wrong with this set. I'll try to post an update when I hear something.
Overall - I can't say too much about the TV until we've lived with it for a while.Update: After a few days, we noticed that, when turned OFF, the television emitted a high-pitched noise. The noice stopped when the TV was powered back on.
After speaking with Vizio tech support (and going through futile "power cycles," Vizio scheduled a warranty service call. It is scheduled for September 30 - I'll update this post with the verdict....
Update:
The service company just left.
They replaced the power board, but the sound is still there (they claim they can't hear it after installing - which is BS).
I am going to give VIZIO one more chance to fix the problem, and then the unit's going back to Amazon and I'm getting another brand.
This is really too bad, since the TV works great otherwise - Internet apps work great, picture is great.
I don't want to say not to buy this TV - just be aware that this has happened to the unit I purchased.
...Update:
Unfortunately we ended up returning this television to Amazon. We purchased an identical unit from Wal-Mart, and it made the same sound. Based on the fact that two TVs and a replaced power board didn't solve the problem, I concluded that this model from Visio will always make the sound and returned it.
We purchased a non-internet TV (Sony) and a Roku box. This combination works fine. The Sony isn't nearly as nice as the Vizio, and I need to grab a second remote, but this is an annoyance. We don't watch too much TV anyway, so it's not a big bother.
I would recommend Vizio only if you have a chance to return the set. I don't think all Vizio models will have this problem, but you can't be too carefull.
