IBM 31P9490 Keyboard for Thinkpad (Black) Review

IBM 31P9490 Keyboard for Thinkpad (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought it to extend my thinkpad keyboard experience, which was wonderful, to my new Toshiba TabletPC. It has about the same looking and layout as my old thinkpad laptop, which is what I expected.
However, the build quality is poor, compared to the one mounted on the thinkpad laptop and to the mac at my place. The functions keys on the top are shaky. I got a chance to detach some keypads from both the laptop and this keyboard. The plastic components suspending/mouning the keypads on this keyboard are poorly made, tend to be very soft.
These top-row keys are dull as well, not picking up every stroke. Especially bad is the "delete" key, which works only if I hit it with extra attention. I found this to be very distracting.
Also, motion components beneath the keypads seem not well lubricated, squeaking in quiet nights.
For a price around $90 and such a quality, I will hesitate to recommend it to anyone, except that you cannot live without a thinkpad keyboard.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y530-7343U 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Black Review

Lenovo IdeaPad Y530-7343U 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Black

(More customer reviews)
This is my second Lenovo notebook. The first one was a ThinkPad R61 which I liked very much. It got stolen out of the back of my car. So, liking the Lenovo product, I bought a new one. The product I am reviewing is similar to the "item being reviewed," the main differences being that I have a 2.0G processor where this one has a 2.13G processor.
Build Quality:
Lenovo is the company which manufactured IBM's laptop computers. IBM's laptops were designed for business users. They were tough enough to be dragged around everywhere. It continues to make laptop computers which are more road friendly than the competition, even in this unit which is "home user" oriented. On most of the competition's laptop computers for school and home use, you can twist the lid/screen and there is a good deal of flex. Not so here. This means the screen is less likely to get damaged or cracked. The rest of the case similarly has little flex which means it is well built. While the keyboard is not up to the quality of the ThinkPad line, it is still very good and does not have much flex or bend when you type on it. It is a bit heavy weighing in at over 6 lbs, but it is worth it to me when I consider that it is less likely to break.
XP Drivers available on-line:
The Y530 comes with Vista Home Premium. Mine has the 64 bit o/s. I hate Vista. It is bloated, slow, overly intrusive, the Start Menu was modified poorly from XP, it is cumbersome to find any administrative tools and it does not work with many pieces of business software. When Microsoft updates their operating systems, it seems that only their software works on the newer o/s. WordPerfect X3 (the better word processor!), Paperport 11.0, older versions of WordPerfect and Legal Solutions Plus and many older game programs simply won't work properly, even when you tell the system to run the program in XP mode. This, I suspect, is the reason about 75% of the business computers still run XP.
Vista Ultimate and Business come with downgrade rights to XP. Here, no such rights exist; HOWEVER, Lenovo provides drivers and software on line so you can load XP!!! (XP is faster than Vista and runs everything I need!) I will be downgrading.
Performance:
I get the following benchmarks with Vista:
Performance Test 6.1: 525.7
PC Wizard (not valid because of 64 bit o/s) = 2047
3DMark 01 = 5193
3DMark 03 = 2269
3DMark 05 = 1199
3DMark 06 = 905
SuperPI calculation of PI to 1M places takes 29.25 seconds.
PLEASE REMEMBER, MINE HAS THE SLOWER PROCESSOR SO THIS SHOULD BE ABOUT 5 - 10% FASTER!
In short, this machine is not as fast as my 2 year old XP based desktop which has a 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo with 2G of memory, an ATI All In Wonder X800XL video card on a Gigabyte 965G-DS3 motherboard running XP. This box is not up to speed for modern gamers. It has good speed as a home entertainment and business/school oriented system. An O/S downgrade to XP would no doubt give you an extra 10% or so of speed.
Appearance and Functionality:
Lenovo still goes with the industrial black look. The outside is plain dull black which is textured so as to make it easier to grip. None of the high gloss colored plastic stuff that is on so many HPs and Dells and Sony Vaios.
Inside, you get a piano black high gloss plastic surrounding the 15.4" screen. The hinge is in the back of the machine, and rather than clamp the screen on the top of the box, the lid is bent and wraps around the computer/keyboard/electronics bottom section. The keyboard is surrounded by a single piece of brushed metal with a black touch sensitive multimedia controls above the keyboard and an orange volume control on the right side of the touch controls.
The box contains five speakers, including an alleged subwoofer which fires downward under the computer. I would look at the Toshibas with the HK speaker systems for a better audio performance.
It comes with a multi-card reader slot, dual layer dvd/CD writer, HDMI output, VGA output, 3 USB ports, modem, ethernet port, built in WIFI, Dolby Digital sound system, microphone and 1.3 megapixel camera in the lid. It includes Veriface software which allows the computer to enter your log-on password using just your image. The Veriface software is very sensitive, and works only from the right distance and at the same angle. It does not seem to be available on XP.
Cons:
Unlike HP, the keyboard has no angle to it, so you are typing on a slightly uncomfortable surface if you have it on a desk or table. There are four small rubber pieces which protect the screen when the lid is closed. Two are right under your wrists and my writs rub against them unless I wear a long sleve shirt. It comes with Vista and a trial version of Norton Anti-virus, which I find ineffective and annoying.
The high gloss screen is a little too high gloss and too reflective under certain circumstances.
Conclusion:
Based on the price to performance ratio, excelent build quality and availability of XP drivers on line, I would not hesitate to purchase this unit again.

Lenovo ThinkPad SL400 2743 14.1" Laptop Review

Lenovo ThinkPad SL400 2743 14.1 Laptop
Average Reviews:

I have owned this laptop (SL400) for around 1.5 years. All I can say is the build quality is horrible. I have three main issues with the laptop. The DC port on the laptop is loose and possibly a safety hazard. The LCD left hinge broke, so the LCD was dangling on one hinge (until I fixed it). The keyboard is acting up, some keys I have to press hard to get it to register. I treat my laptops with care and all of my previous laptops never had this many issues after 1.5 years of use. Time to try a different model or maybe even a different brand.

I have purchased this laptop a little over a month now and it is definitely a great buy. The only issue I have with it is I have to wipe off my finger prints regularly because of the quality of its exterior but that is a minor matter. When I first bought this laptop, I thought I would not have been able to do video editing on it because of the limited video graphics but I have been using a video editing program by Magix and it works flawlessly. However, I have been having some trouble with vista recognizing drivers for an audio interface that I have been trying to use with this laptop . For the price of this laptop, this is real deal. Amazon.com had my purchase shipped to Trinidad in a less than a week with no problems. Great service.

Got this about 1 week ago with the 8 cell battery and 250GB hard drive. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and have upgraded the OS to Win7 Pro in order to take full advantage of the touch/tablet features. Out of the box, this took only about 5 minutes to power on and setup. Lenovo tries to get you to pull the trigger on several add-on apps upon booting the first time, but you can skip it. These are programs like ID vault and other useful but unnecessary programs. After skipping that, I setup a few things for Windows, and we're in! My wireless network detected without a hitch. I'm using a Zyxel 550N router...great signal and reception.Touch screen:
I was anxious to try the touch screen, so I dove in and tried the Lenovo installed stuff 1st. Lenovo Natural Touch is the app that appears to be much like the U1 interface shown at CES. Very "iPhone-like". It runs a little laggy at first, but when you get a feel for the touch speed, it is actually quite responsive. I tried playing with pictures and the multi-touch works great! IT DOES WORK without having to upgrade windows to a higher version than starter edition...but, using Lenovo's custom software. I played the sample video which ran pretty smooth and looked just fine. I then tried the notes app and recorded a video of myself which worked as expected. I was able to write on sticky notes witout a problem using my fingertip. I also bought a Pogo which I think works fine for the touch points and just okay for actual writing.So, I had a license for Win7 Pro and decided to install it since it added full support for tablets. I got a student deal for $29 a while back...couldn't resist. So, I did the anytime upgrade and it took about 20 minutes total. Whalla...Win7 Pro.I quickly installed Office 2007 including OneNote. They all work fine and multi-touch works to zoom in Word and Powerpoint. OneNote is super for this tablet!!! You can take documents and use a highlighter on screen or scribble notes on top of text documents...VERY COOL and will be quite useful!LCD quality:
The screen is beautiful--very clear and while reflective/glossy, the quality is excellent, bright and easy to look at.
The screen of course can be viewed vertically or normally. In portrait mode, I found the picture to be a little less sharp and it puts a slight strain on the eye. I'm not sure if its the refresh rate or what, but there is a slight metallic sheen to images and a little bit of a contrast issue. Nothing major, but definitely noticeable. By default, the accelerometer is turned offWeb tests:
It of course has IE, but I downloaded Firefox for security and personal preference reasons. Both run fine. They both seem to respond to the multi-touch and the spread gesture zooms in, while swiping scrolls. You can easily navigate like you would on an iPhone. Speed was good.I played a few flash games and they played full speed. My 3 yr old daughter even played some games at [...] and used the touch screen to control them with ease!I then tried streaming movies on netflix....perfect playback although the screen size and format can waste a little screen real estate. I played a 4:3 movie and it wasted a lot of space until I went full screen...the small browser window made it so you had to scroll up or down a bit in order to see the whole picture. Going full-screen fixed it.
So, flash and silverlight work just fine. I plan to try some other games soon to push this a little....I'll report back as I get time.Inking:
I have no experience with other units that have the RF pens, but I can say that the inking/writing is not overly intuitive. Windows Journal and other tablet apps work great though. One I train myself and calibrate this to my writing, I think it'll improve a lot. The pen/highlighter that I can use in other Office apps is going to be useful for research and school work. The handwriting recognition is not super and almost a waste for inputting a lot of text, even with the Pogo stylus I bought. Plan to use this for drawing and less detailed writing...Misc. Stuff:
SD card reader works great and you can flip through pictures on the card via the Lenovo Natural touch app. The speakers and sound quality are not good at all. It is very "tin-ny" and not loud, though in a quiet room I guess it would be ok. Voices in a movie are audible, but the EQ is bad. I didn't try headphones, but I'm positive that they'd improve the listening experience. A program called "Bumptop" is included an pretty cool to show off touch features. It creates a 3-D environment for files and pictures that you can move around and stick on walls, stack up or sort. A brief tutorial shows you how...pretty cool. Like many other Lenovo products, this too has the facial recognition which works okay. It came with McAfee security suite on it, which I promptly removed since I'm not a fan. I am just using MS Security Suite and Malicious SW tools....works fine for me. I won't do any risky browsing anyway on this. I haven't tried an eBook, but I think this won't look any different than a regular notebook. The screen is certainly not e-ink though I think it'll serve the purpose for those of us who want the capability, but don't plan to buy a kindle or even the iPad.The 8-cell battery (getting 6-6.5hrs) works great as a grip when using this in portrait/tablet modes. The keyboard has a nice feel to it, though fast touch-typists like myself are going to struggle when trying to type a lot. The left-hand side of the KB is slightly smaller for shift/tab/caps keys, but still very useable. Full sized keys, but the layout is just slightly off. The SD slot is in the front and covered when not in use...Final Thoughts:
I bought this because I wanted something to travel with and Apple didn't really announce what I needed in January. So, I wanted something new and cool...which this is. I thought the idea of a touch interface was in line with progress and I'm happy I got this. For the price, this is a sound solution for a netbook that gives you just enough "shiny and new" to keep interest. The touch is not a gimmick and I will make use of it for sure. The build quality is solid and the look/finish is beautiful, though a finger print magnet for sure. Overall, I must say that I am quite happy with this purchase. As a Mac user, I often have a less than stellar outlook on PC machines, though Win7 is a huge improvement. Not without the issues that plague all Windows machines, this Lenovo is exactly what I wanted and will prove to be a great 2nd laptop and travel companion.
Dave

This is a video review of the Lenovo S10-3t with Windows 7 Premium and 2 GB of memory.
My overall impression is quite positive given the flexibility of using my existing PC applications and using it as a tablet for reading e-books, surfing the internet, and watching videos. One pleasant surprise is that the wide screen display gives me a much better internet browsing experience than my other existing netbooks. In my opinion, it does a lot more than an iPad with a similar price as its low-end model.
The multi-touch experience is not the best but it works quite well after some training.
Hope you enjoy this video
Cheers

Lenovo Y550P 324156U 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Lenovo Y550P 324156U 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After using Macs exclusively for 3 years, I switched back to Windows because of one reason: I wanted a quad core laptop (i7 specifically) and Apple has yet to make one. Furthermore, I know that when they do it will only be offered at first on the highest end of the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro models and will likely cost between $1800-$2200. When this laptop went on sale for $999.99, I knew I could no longer justify staying with Apple because $999.99 just happens to be the price of their lowest end laptop. For $999.99 (PC vs Mac) you can get processor quad core vs. dual core, HD 500GB vs 250GB, Ram 4GB vs 2GB, max ram 8GB vs 4GB, LCD 13.3" vs 15.6", and internal graphics of 256MB shared vs 1GB discrete. To me this is no contest. I was able to switch my Adobe programs over to PC by calling Adobe customer service and performing a cross platform swap. I needed to update my MS Office suite anyway so I didn't mind spending $170 to get MS Office Home/Student 2007 plus Outlook 2007. I will describe my experience with the Lenovo through a Pro/Con list, and I will compare the Apple and PC experience where necessary.
Pros:
*i7 quad-core laptop for $999.99
*i7 quad-core = very, very fast
*1GB discrete graphics will satisfy every need except only the highest of professional/gaming graphics processing needs.
*looks very nice and seems well-built
*4GB of ram is enough for now and the option to expand to 8GB later is great
*ExpressCard 34, eSATA and SD card slots are most welcome
Cons:
*fan is audible a good bit of the time, and most of the time during even moderate application usage. I was aware of this issue with quad-core laptops prior to purchase so it did not come as a surprise, but at the same time I do think it belongs on the con list
*terrible sound output quality and volume from the built-in speakers
*terrible sound output quality and volume as well as crackling/popping while using external speakers, so terrible that I had to buy a Creative XFI Expresscard Sound Card (which did, incidentally, fix all of the audio issues)
*audio out jack located on the front of the laptop (I know this is all too common on today's laptops but it is annoying nonetheless; the Creative XFI card also solved this issue)
*occasional high pitch whine (the source of which is still under investigation) which can be quite annoying
*location of the cooling fan inlet vent means that you will not be able to use this on your lap or on top of a bedspread unless you first put a hard flat object under the laptop first; the laptop essentially is designed to only be placed on hard flat surfaces
*no DVI, mini-DVI or mini-DisplayPort ports; HDMI and VGA (VGA?!?!?!?!) are the only video ports
*the built-in trackpad experience is truly atrocious: the trackpad has a raised grid surface (instead of a flat smooth surface like 99% of the laptops made) which makes navigation uncomfortable and imprecise. In addition, the scrolling bar is laughably unusable. It is made for hands with fingers the size of baby's fingers and using it requires tapping down once first to turn it on; one can not simply move their fingers over it to scroll
*battery life is terrible, but I knew this going in because all quad-core laptops have terrible battery life as a result of their power-hungry processors. You will not get the 4.5 hours of battery life as advertised, trust me. I don't know how they were able to achieve that number but virtually everything must have been disabled and/or turned all the way down.\
*a moderate amount of bloatware which I am still deleting/tinkering with after a week of ownership
*built-in LCD not particularly stunning but I find nothing objectionable about it either
*would have liked to get Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate considering this is a high-end laptop but I did know prior to purchase of course that I was only getting Windows 7 Home
*hard drive came partitioned into 4 parts which is very, very annoying. In addition a few of them took up massive amounts of hard drive space for no apparent reason. It took me a few days of messing around with various freeware utilities to get all (but the essential) of them deleted. (hint: check out the free "Ultimate Boot CD" it is what finally got rid of the pesky partitions that Windows disk utility wouldn't let me touch)
In my opinion, this is your basic garden-variety "desktop replacement" laptop. With an external keyboard, mouse and monitor this makes a great desktop that can sometimes be carried out of the home when need be. I find the "laptop only" experience to be sub-par. This is perfectly suitable for someone like me since my laptops have always spent over 95% of their time at home plugged into external I/O devices. If you are someone who is just the opposite, however, I can not recommended this unit because of the issues described above. Overall, I am satisfied with the unit primarily due to the performance specs and the price. There is just no arguing with the value of an i7 laptop with 1GB discrete graphics for $999.99. The length of the con list, however, was sufficient to cause me to drop the rating to 4/5.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 4GB HDMI Dual Core Laptop Review

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 4GB HDMI Dual Core Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did copious amounts of research and comparison shopping before buying this laptop. Overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase, and hopefully I can share some advice regarding this machine's peculiarities.
When I started shopping for laptops, I was looking at laptops that were upwards of $2000. Then I thought I could get the laptop of my dreams for under $1500, but as I looked around, I realized that if I kept shopping I could save a lot more money. My last laptop was $1000, and though it was a very nice laptop, the wear and tear it showed in a few short years made it seem like a bad investment.
Compared to other laptops in its price range, this laptop has some better features you should be aware of. These features are becoming standard on most machines now, but I looked at countless laptops that was missing one or more of them:
* 14" screen (aka not too large)
* LED backlight
* Greater than 720p resolution
* DDR3 (4GB, not 2 or 3)
* HDMI
* Wireless N (300mbps, 2.4ghz)
* GIGABIT ETHERNET (uncommon on most laptops)
* USB power when the laptop is suspended/plugged in
* eSata
* ExpressCard slot
* SD card reader
* Security lock
* Webcam with built in mic
* Strong performing CPU and GPU (it's no i3, but the GPU performs better than expected and the CPU is desktop-worthy and not too hot!)
* Stylish chiclet keyboard (lol)
You can expect to find nearly all of these in a good $800 laptop, but you start losing them the lower in price you go. This was the absolute cheapest laptop I could find with all of these features.
Things this laptop has that I wasn't expecting:
* Multi-touch touchpad
* In-keyboard mouse nub and additional buttons below space bar
Also, as you would expect, it has the always useful VGA port. I was specifically looking for HDMI, and initially I looked at laptops with DisplayPort, but VGA+HDMI gives DisplayPort a run for its money because it covers most video output scenarios sans having to purchase/use an annoying dongle.
Next, there are things this laptop doesn't have that I wanted, but proved to be acceptable trade-offs, usually with the goal of lowering cost significantly. This would be the perfect laptop if it had these features. These are the trade-offs and my response to them:
* 5400 RPM drive - I wanted 7200, but HD upgrade is an easy upgrade and can be done cheaply in the future. Also, I can accept 5400 performance easily without being bothered by it, as it's quite standard. There is also the possibility for SSD upgrade, and I would assume that a lower RPM means power savings.
* Bluetooth - Really convenient because I use my Bluetooth headset for VoIP, but it's usually the first thing to go on laptops, and most people don't need it. I have a $5 USB Bluetooth adapter that easily works around this issue with just a minor inconvenience, thus saving a ton of money. Also, not having this feature saves power.
* Blu-Ray - This is the one thing I really wanted and that this laptop should have had. It wouldn't have had to be a Blu-ray burner, but since this laptop has an HD screen (better than 720p) and HDMI out, the ability to watch my Blu-ray movies would have been awesome, and this machine is practically designed for that as the Radeon HD 4250 is made to decode HD video, Blu-ray specifically. It seems silly to design a system that accommodates Blu-ray playback and not include the drive. Since Blu-ray is the new standard optical media, it is a forward-looking upgrade that will save you headaches when the day comes that you are forced to open a Blu-ray data disk. A burner would have been a great luxury and provided a real lasting quality to this machine. However, these days optical drives are of waning importance due to increased network delivery of apps and data, and if needed an external drive can be purchased later. I'm hoping that there will be a chance of finding an internal drive for this machine in the future, but I'm not really expecting it to happen. Another issue that might affect some people (and might also explain the low cost of this model), is that the DVD burner is single-layer only.
* Dedicated video - The extra video performance would have made this laptop suitable for gaming, but the money and power you save by going integrated are impossible to ignore if you are searching for a low cost and portable solution. The 4250 GPU in this machine is surprisingly good, and it trounces the integrated Geforce found in my Athlon II desktop. It also outperforms Intel graphics standard on faster i3 laptops, a refreshing advantage. I'm not a gamer or graphics power user, so this is actually the fastest GPU I've ever had. I play games that are a few years old, and of course they run beautifully.
As you can see, the features on this laptop are very strong, and the caveats are few and reasonable. I found this laptop on sale for $499, so it was impossible not to buy it. The price went up shortly after I bought it, but it appears to have come back down again. The features this laptop lacks helps to make it very affordable and have a positive effect on size, power consumption, heat production, and weight. It's not an elite, fancy pants laptop, but it's a robust worker that will serve all but the most demanding users with flying colors. It's light and small enough to be portable, and it's powerful and large enough to use for several hours without fatigue or use as your primary system.
If you have decided to buy this laptop, this is where you need to pay careful attention, because these are the things I didn't notice before actually getting the machine in my hands and using it:
* This laptop also feels sturdy and well made. HOWEVER, at the same time, it feels plastic-y and cheap, which some users may dislike. This was the first thing that surprised me about this laptop, because in my head I was thinking "Thinkpads are very fancy." You can tell this is a budget machine, and it looks a little goofy. However, it's certainly not ugly (hey, it's black), and the silver lining is not as annoying as I thought it was going to be. My last machine was a more expensive machine, so at first I was a little disappointed, but I got over it quickly as the overall design does have an enduring quality that will not age. It's better than having a very stylish laptop that starts to look foolish over the years when it starts to become a last-gen machine.
* Another thing that surprised me was the screen. I was expecting a slightly better looking screen; on this one you can barely make out little lines between the pixels. When I first turned on the machine, it was glaring, but it seemed to lesson over time, and my eyes are accustomed to it now. Overall the display is satisfactory and not a problem, although it is certainly a low-cost LCD. Compared to my old laptop, this was another thing I needed to get used to. On the plus side, the screen feels nice and big--somehow roomier than my old 14", plus it's a higher resolution as well.
* This laptop has practically no LED's, and the ones it has are not that useful. There is one power LED that shows if it's on or off. It's in a weird spot, but it gets the job done. Then, it has a second, pretty much useless LED that lets you know whether the laptop is plugged in or not, but gives no indication about charge! You can't tell whether the laptop is charging or not. Alongside the fact that there are no indicators for HD, caps lock, or num lock, that makes this the most annoying thing about this laptop that I wasn't expecting. At the end of the day you don't really need these indicators except the charge indicator, but the latter thing I'll just have to live with (I usually leave it plugged in to charge for a long time, so I don't need to monitor charge unless I'm actually using the laptop, which I only use on battery occasionally). People who hate LED's might actually love this aspect of this machine, so it could turn out to be a plus. Anything you need to know about the machine's state can be shown on-screen. The only scenario that you are really screwed in is if you are waiting for the laptop to charge fully and you are in hurry, so you'd have to turn it on to check the charge, but then having it on would make it charge slower.
* The keyboard on this laptop is kind of funny. The chiclet keys feel fine, but they don't feel quite as good as the ones I've used on more expensive laptops. I'm a touch typist, and I type fine on this keyboard--the keys are adequately sized and spaced for me to operate at my full capacity, although perhaps because of the spacing, the keyboard feels slightly bigger than what I'm used to, which makes some reaches difficult, particularly the combo "ba". I adapted to this quickly and don't notice it anymore. Also, some users have lamented that this keyboard is one of the few Thinkpad keyboards that has no back-light. Since I touch type I don't really care. Also, this keyboard has now keypad overlay that you can switch to (there is no num lock). I'm OK with that since typically it is an annoying feature to switch on and off, although sometimes I do really want to use a keypad to touch type on (if you're not a touch typist it won't matter to you). Secondly, the F keys are the reverse function, where the laptop media keys are now the primary function, and you have to hold "fn" to press F5 or F4. This can be switched in the BIOS, so I wouldn't really consider it an issue. At the end of the day, it is on par with a standard keyboard and not difficult to type on; it's just unique. Also, I thought the mouse nub in the center of the keyboard would annoy me or hinder my typing as it does on my friend's Dell Latitude, but this one really...Read more›

This is a good solid computer for the price. Have had mine for about a month and quite impressed so far. The computer has a nice sized, clear screen and plenty of power to run applications and basic everyday computer needs. It has the basics for everyday computing... Little flimsy on the design but wouldn't stop me from buying it again.

My laptop use is mostly wordprocessing, spreadsheeting, internet browsing and bible study.
This is all that you expect from the Thinkpad line: professional looking, not flashy and distracting. Something you're happy to take onsite to give presentations without drawing attention away from your message.
Much quicker that the T40, I appreciated the fast one-swipe access to the laptop via the fingerprint reader.
The TFT screen was evenly bright and crisp.
Mine came with Vista. Though Vista has its critics, I didn't find it frustrating after I turned off User Account Control.

I was always an HP fan and for the last 8 years I only used HP laptops. I bought this specific laptop (ordered from this page) about half a year ago. It was so disappointing that I then bought a Lenovo X201s (also from Amazon), which turned out to be way much better. If you're buying this laptop for business, then don't waste your time, buy X201s. Almost everything is better on X201s (weight, heat, noise, display, keyboard...)

Lenovo ThinkPad T61p 6460 Notebook Review

As an owner of 3 IBM Thinkpads in the past I have been very disappointed with the Lenovo Thinkpad T61p. It worked well enough for nine months but then the screen went out. When I returned it to Lenovo for warranty repair they said the screen was not covered and demanded $700.00. I pointed out that the machine had not suffered physical damage(not dropped or dented) but they said that "sometimes this just happens" and it is not covered under the warranty. Some warranty! Lenovo is not in the same class as IBM. I suggest you look elsewhere for a reliable machine and a reputable manufacturer that honors it warranty.

Long story short: this is an amazing computer with very few, forgivable, flaws
I spent a lot of time looking into the X201T because I'm someone who likes to buy computers rarely. The last computer I bought was a Thinkpad R61 in 2004, it did me well for six years and my wife uses it to this day. I have little doubt that the X201T will do the same.
The X201T is less a computer and more a collection of functions, which are made possible by the many ways to provide the computer with input. You have two mice (a red dot and a touchpad), two keyboards (a fantastic real one and one on the touch screen), a stylus (which is both a mouse and a keyboard), and your finger (the most intuitive way to operate Windows or use the internet, even if you're using the built-in keyboard). If you get a set of Bluetooth headphones/microphone you can even do a lot of things with your voice (the pre-installed speech recognition software works better than I expected), and you can control music from your ear. With such a wide range of options, interacting with the computer is smooth and natural.
Good thing too, because it can do so much. My work requires me to read and write, all the time, and the X201T is perfect for that. It is a great word processor - all the more so because editing Word documents with the stylus is quicker and easier than the mouse/keyboard combination. Instead of keeping a pad of scratch paper around for ideas, I just run OneNote in tablet mode. If you work with pdf's, the X201T will become your library and your filing cabinet. Having used the tablet to surf the internet, I am now convinced that the web was not meant to be accessed with a mouse. The X201T has all the same functions as an iPad, which makes it an extraordinary media player - I hook up my Bluetooth headphones and play the thing from my bag. If you want a television, the widescreen is actually pretty big and very bright (even without the extra brightness upgrade), and you can always hook it up to an external monitor. Of course, this thing destroys email, spreadsheets, and other normal computing tasks.
The computer isn't cheap and without a few accessories and upgrades it's not worth having. The docking station is a must, and Lenovo's tablet bag is critical if you want to work on the go. The multitouch option is a necessity; the 8-cell battery provides a little less power than I'd like (~ 5 hours of full functionality and about two more without internet or Bluetooth) but it's a heck of a lot better than the 4-cell battery; you'll want 4 GB of RAM (expandable to 8); and the 2.13 GHz processor is worth the investment. The upgraded warranty (the one that covers accidents) makes sense for me. That said, I was able to get all of this for about 2K in August 2010 - sellers on eBay buy these packages in bulk and undercut the manufacturer.
A couple of relatively minor downsides: forget about gaming (though Halo 2 works well on an external monitor), Windows Media player sometimes skips when I have the computer in the tablet bag and I go up or down stairs, it sometimes gets hot on the bottom when it runs for a long time in tablet mode, and multitouch capability is not built seamlessly into Windows. (You can zoom in Word, but only in 10% increments, and many Windows options are too small to touch with your finger. That said, Windows 7 is very well suited for a touchscreen on the whole.)Overall, I'm looking forward to the next six years with my new computer. I have no idea what we'll have by then, but I do know that the transition from notebook to tablet has reaffirmed my admiration of technological progress. The experience was similar to the one I had in 2004 when I moved from a desktop to a laptop. If you want to invest in a serious (and seriously fun) piece of technology, dump the iPad and pick up an X201T.

Lenovo ThinkPad T60 2623 15-Inch Laptop Review

Lenovo ThinkPad T60 2623 15-Inch Laptop

The Thinkpad T series is IBM/Lenovo's standard business laptop, and as a college student, I have found it to be perfect. I have the T60 model with the specs listed above: T2500 (2GHz Core Duo), 1 GB Ram, 100 GB Hard Drive, SuperDrive, Bluetooth, Wireless Internet, Fingerprint Reader, Windows XP SP2, 128 MB ATI Radeon x1400. The laptop is very well constructed and sturdy. The keyboard is excellent, and very responsive. The screen is slightly dim, but I usually use it at an even dimmer setting anyways to conserve battery life. I also have a dock and a 21" widescreen monitor. Recently, when my computer became infected, I merely used the backup sector (which takes away 20GB from your hard drive) to reload everything - it was a lot easier than manually reformatting, installing Windows, installing the thinkpad drivers, etc. The drivers are also very good, with the exception of the Thinkpad Access Connections, which I uninstalled immediately. The embedded security chip works well, if you need to use that. I prefer to key in a password rather than use a fingerprint reader. The fingerprint reader will not work if there is moisture of your fingertip. It also needs to be recalibrated (i.e. reprogram your fingerprint) every know and then. Since getting a dock though, I've chosen to forego the fingerprint reader completely.
I purchased this thinkpad with the accidental damage protection warranty, which means I can do nearly anything to the thinkpad I want, and it will be replaced. Why would I though - it's a great computer.
Battery life is pretty good - the 6 cell battery is rated at 3.5 hrs and will give you a decent 2.5. You can always upgrade to a 9 cell battery and/or take out the DVD-burner and stick in an extra battery there.
Opening up the T60 is also easy, and allowable under the warranty to some extent - for example, adding RAM or replacing the keyboard (replacement keyboards are shipped overnight!)
I also like the matte-ish finish off the laptop cover as well as the screen. All in all, a wonderful laptop, and with a student discount, very affordable. The newer Thinkpads have Core 2 Duo processors (marginal performance increase over the Core Duo in this laptop), and are Vista Ready. You can always upgrade. Highly recommended laptop.

This laptop came with passwords installed. Took me 2 days to make passwords go away and the 'secure' passwords did conflict with fingerprint security software. This machine is still showing as it belongs to the seller. The machine is in good physical condition, however, seller never 'cleaned' past users settings/passwords to set the machine ready for the next user. Windows and thinkpad software was not updated for a long period of time. After I cleaned this clutter and updated the system with windows and thinkpad software, it is finally working as normal. It just runs hot, sometimes very hot. Battery lasts 2-3 hrs depending upon task. Bulging battery pack makes it less portable. I just use it for checking email and surf the web while I am in bed.
