I purchased this laptop shortly after Windows 7 came out. I found a deal on it for $450 or so at Office Depot. I am not an avid Office Depot shopper (and actually used to work there), but I decided to check this out. I got the laptop, had everything setup relatively quickly, and realized that it came with Windows 7 32-bit installed (my lack of homework, but didn't turn out to be a problem). This is the one of only reasons (see next paragraph for other) I give this laptop a 4 star rating. Someone who is even moderately tech savvy can install Windows 7 64-bit with the exact same key, which is on the bottom of the laptop completely free and 100 percent Legal (Windows 7 keys allow for EITHER 32-bit or 64-bit installation). Some of the software for the computer that is on the disc is a bit more challenging to find the 64-bit drivers for, you will have to look for the 64-bit folder. This is worth the extra effort in my opinion. Google it and you will find plenty of forums if you need any help (especially on [...]).
Pros: This laptop for [...] bucks with 4GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, 16 inch wide screen, HDMI output, and 64-bit Processor and 64-bit Windows 7 (with a bit of work as said above), is clearly a steal! A brand that is lesser known in the mainstream market, because of less advertising, means you don't pay for the Dell, Apple, or Sony advertising. This is a well known brand in the motherboard industry.
Cons: The one problem I have noticed is that occasionally when it tries to hibernate it will not be able to come out of it. I just restart and everything is fine. I have avoided most of this problem by forcing my hard drive to stay on in the power settings. I know it has crashed when the power button LED does not flash anymore (which it normally does when its sleeping). This may be a Windows 7 thing, might be specific to Windows 7 64-bit, or may be the laptop. I am not 100 percent sure where this problem is coming from.
In repsonse to the reviewer talking about tech support and such. Obviously MSI support can only do so much when you haven't done all your research. In your review it even sounded like they answered all your questions and waived some of the cost for you. There were things you did not understand from the get go that you should have. This is not a case of poor MSI support, rather lack of customer due diligence. I am tired of customers rating the product poorly because they haven't done their homework. It sounded like this reviewer looked at a few laptops, chatted with a sales person at Office Depot for an hour, and thought he knew everything he needed to purchase a laptop. The Office Depot guy's job is to sell you a freaking laptop, NOT to do all your homework and make the best decision for you. He is going to have basic knowledge of the products for sale, not enough for you to make a great decision.

I, like most people, had a list of "dream qualities" I was looking for in my next laptop. I had gotten over (as more people should) the fear of the new guy on the block. Asus makes fine, well designed computers, with prices that are about on par with Gateway, but with a quality and design build more comparable to far more expensive brands. They consistently score at or near the top of their class in reviews on reputable consumer tech websites like cnet.com. And the dream computer I had picked out is a beauty! It's also not the one I ended up with.
I originally got this laptop to break it in for my Dad. The one I wanted was the ASUS UL30A-A2 Thin and Light 13-3-Inch Silver Laptop - 12 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium). It's a super thin, 13 inch extremely light model, is fast, and has an incredible battery life of around ~10 hours. But my Dad needed a new laptop too, and the next generation of the ASUS UL models promises to feature some simple features that had been left out of the first run (namely integrated bluetooth capabilities, and a nicer, non-shiny palm rest). I needed a laptop right now for classes, and couldn't wait for the models with the new feature set. So, I decided to get something "cheap but nice" for my Dad, and break it in for him, fully ready to trade up to the $800+ model in a month or two.
Now I don't know if I can give the ASUS K60IJ back to my dad! This is a remarkably stylish laptop in person. My previous computers have been getting increasingly smaller with each purchase, trying to get the ultimate combination of size and portability, but the 16" screen on the K60IJ is insanely good, rendering beautiful colors and amazing looking videos. (I rarely have my screen brightness set above 3 on a 20 scale.) It is surprisingly light. I've held laptops that weighed less than this one before, but not many you could touch without spending more than a grand. So, yes it's bigger, but it's also very portable, in my opinion. I take it back and forth to campus with me three times a week, and it doesn't appreciably change the weight of my backpack. It is also whisper quiet (the only time I've even heard it make a peep was when I was burning a DVD), and always cool to the touch, which is great, because heat is the natural enemy of shelf-lives of electronics. It comes preinstalled with Windows 7, which unlike most things, is every bit as wonderful as everybody says it is. And unlike the netbooks and Ultra-thin and lights that have been dominating the market of late, this little sapphire beauty compromises nothing in performance, with a dualcore 2,1 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 320 GB HD. She practically flies!
Two things you should note, however, are the fact that in person, this laptop is nowhere close in color to the beautiful blue in the picture. I don't know what kind of "trick" lighting they filmed it under, but I've taken this baby nearly everywhere, and it never looks more than "black with a hint of blue" no matter what the lighting is. Secondly, the battery life, although somewhat generous for one generation back laptops (solidly in the 4 hour range with full battery saving mode enabled), it can't hold a candle to the newbies like the Acer Timeline, or the model I'd been orginally intended to get, the ASUS UL30A, with their 10-12 hours unplugged. But then again, remarkable battery life is just not going to happen for under $500. And, on the nit-picky side: all that shiny plastic, although beautiful, and in the ASUS K60IJ's case, with a lovely embedded cross-hatch texture, collects dust and fingerprints like nobody's business. If you are at all OCD, you're going to need to carry around a cleaning cloth with you, or you will go slowly insane.
Overall, this is an amazingly affordable computer, with very generous specs, and a very nice design aesthetic, all for under $500 dollars (check around, Amazon does not have the best price for this model at present). It's a little early to tell, but I think I'm in love!

I've been using my 3810tz since July '09. It really is a nice laptop. Great size, decent performance.
However, the laptop has been recalled because of an overheating risk due to a manufacturer's defect.
With Acer, I get the privilege of paying for my own packing materials to ship something I depend on for work and school for 7-10 days. When I called Acer Support to handle the repair, I asked if there was someone to complain to about how the recall was handled (a voucher for packing material and something else to show that they understand that their mistake is costing me at least a week of work).
Some companies with bad service will at least listen to your complaints before ignoring them.
Acer won't even listen.

Dell XPS M1330 13.3-Inch Widescreen Laptop (Tuxedo Black) Review

Dell XPS M1330 13.3-Inch Widescreen Laptop (Tuxedo Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[See end of my review for an update after nearly 1 year of ownership]
After reading lots of good reviews for the Dell XPS M1330 (e.g., cnet and pcmag websites among others), I purchased two of them, one for my wife, one for me. The configuration of our laptops is a bit different than the one on this page, and I urge you to custom-configure yours at dell's website rather than buying a pre-configured one (unless you're in too much of a hurry to wait an extra week to get it custom-built to your specs).
We both love the laptops. First, I'll list all the good things, then a few negatives about the laptop, then some negatives about dealing with Dell.
We both got the optional LED display (extra $150). Compared to the standard LCD display, the LED display is brighter, more energy efficient (meaning longer battery life), and makes the computer a couple tenths of an inch thinner and a couple ounces lighter. The LED display is noticeably nicer than the LCD display (which isn't bad, but is certainly not better than the average glossy laptop display). The only negative about the display is that the viewing angle isn't as wide as I had expected, and isn't as wide as the viewing angle on some other laptops with glossy displays.
We both got large hard drives, hers at 5400rpm and mine at 7200rpm. The 5400rpm one should be fine for 90% of users. I got the faster one because I do a lot of number crunching.
Hers has the integrated graphics, mine has the optional 128mb dedicated graphic card - neither of us have really pushed the graphics to the edge, but for everyday applications the (less-expensive) integrated graphics seems every bit as good as the extra-cost dedicated graphics card.
We both got core 2 duo intel processors - hers is 2.0 ghz, mine is 2.4 ghz. I consider a core 2 duo running at 2.0 ghz or better a necessity for anyone buying a laptop these days. I also suggest getting a large hard drive. It's better to pay extra for these things now, than to find out next year that your needs have outgrown your processor and hard drive. (RAM, however, is something you can upgrade later at relatively low cost as your needs grow.)
The keyboard has an excellent feel; typing on it is very pleasant, and the keys are not especially noisy. I've had 8 laptops from various companies (gateway, dell, toshiba, and 4 thinkpads from ibm or lenovo). Everyone says that thinkpads have the best keyboards. I think that USED to be true. But the keyboard on my most recent thinkpad - built after lenovo bought thinkpad from ibm - isn't quite as good as the keyboards on the three ibm-branded thinkpads I owned. Compared to most laptops, I like the keyboard on the Dell xps m1330 very much. This is subjective, though, and you should visit your local Best Buy (most locations stock Dell XPS laptops) and try the keyboard yourself.
We also like the slot-loading CD/DVD reader/burner better than the more common tray-loading ones. It is noisier than the tray when accepting or ejecting a disc, but the noise is only for a second or two and it is very tolerable, not annoying at all.
The bottom of the laptop does not get as hot as most other laptops I've used. However, some folks who bought this laptop say that theirs run pretty hot. A good thing to do is make sure you get the option to return your unit for a full refund, in case this (or anything else) turns out to be a problem.
We both get excellent battery life from the standard 6-cell battery. When running on battery power on a cross-country flight, I turned down the brightness of the display two notches from maximum, and got a bit over 3 hours of battery life. (This wasn't watching a DVD, though, which would use up the battery a bit faster.)
The build quality of these things seems very good. I fully expect them to hold up well over the long haul.
I realize this is subjective, but we both really like the looks of the XPS laptops. They are sleek and attractive. I encourage you to visit your local best buy and see one in person and judge for yourself. (This will also give you a chance to type on its keyboard to see whether you like the feel of it).
The Dell XPS laptops come with some nice extras, including:
a) all of the drivers, software, and operating system files on backup CDs or DVDs. This is unusual: most other laptops have these on their hard drives, and the buyer is required to create his or her own backup discs - most people don't bother doing this, which is bad news if a disaster happens and you have to reinstall everything from scratch.
b) a nice leatherette folder that holds all of these discs and the manual (yes, it comes with a printed manual, too!)
c) a soft sleeve to protect the laptop in case you put it in a briefcase, large handbag or backpack not specifically designed for laptops.
d) a small, thin wireless IR remote, which you can use when watching DVDs or listening to music or enjoying other media. This is a very cool but not incredibly useful extra, because you probably won't be sitting very far from the 13.3" display when watching your movies.
Now for the negatives.
There are only 2 USB ports. You can get around this with a USB hub, but some devices need to be plugged directly into a USB port in the computer. You can also get around this to a limited extent by opting for built-in bluetooth, then using wireless bluetooth devices instead of USB devices where possible. Still, it's inconvenient having only 2 usb ports.
That's really the only negative about the laptop, itself. The laptop doesn't have a few other luxuries that some other laptops now have - such as a little light built in to the top of the monitor that you can turn on when you're typing in a dark environment (red-eye flight) and it dimly lights up your keyboard. But just about everything else you'd need is here.
The big negative was dealing with Dell.
After configuring and pricing my systems online at dell's site, I ordered over the phone, because I'd read that you can bargain a bit with the phone sales reps. In fact, I did save about $200 on each of the laptops this way. However, the sales rep entered the order incorrectly for one of the laptops, never sent me a confirmation email, and gave me an incorrect customer number. Then, he took 5 or 6 days off, and it was very hard for me to get any information about my orders from anyone else at dell. When I finally did, I saw that one of the computers was not configured the way I ordered it, and it was quite a lot of trouble to get that changed back to how I originally wanted it.
After that was all straightened out, the laptops were built and shipped to me a few days before the estimated ship and delivery dates, which was a nice bonus.
But one of the laptops came with a nice, small 65-watt power supply adapter, while the other came with a big bulky and heavy 90-watt adapter. I thought there must be a mistake, they are both the same laptop, after all. It took me a while (and several calls) to learn that either adapter could be used safely with either laptop, but that the the 90-watt adapter would be better for the laptop with the faster processor.
I've made a couple calls to Dell technical support. Each time, I got through to a real human in only about 5-10 minutes. (These days, that's really quite good.) I believe this is because XPS laptops get access to "express" customer service/support, while regular Dell laptops (e.g. inspiron) have the regular (i.e. slow) tech support with long wait times.
The tech support person was located in the Philippines. He was very patient and helpful.
One other negative about Dell: they shipped both laptops with Windows Vista, the original edition NOT service pack 1 - even though SP1 was available to Dell for 2 months before I placed my order!!! That meant I had to install SP1 on both laptops. This installation did not go as smoothly as it should have (e.g., after installation, computer froze once, and later didn't wake from sleep correctly, or woke up but didn't recognize attached usb devices, etc).
In fact, I have a few issues with Vista, but I'm reviewing the laptop, not Vista, and you unfortunately will likely be forced to get Vista with almost any new laptop you are considering buying.
But it was incredibly disappointing that Dell put the old Vista on these machines when SP1 was already available. Perhaps they hadn't yet gotten around to testing SP1 on their laptops.
** *
Would I do it all over again? Yes, even if I had to go through the same hassles dealing with Dell, because I really love these XPS laptops.
** *
UPDATE - MARCH 2008 - AFTER NEARLY 1 YEAR OF OWNERSHIP
We have now owned and used both M1330s for nearly a year.
Mine started making a funny noise, which turned out to be a defective fan. Called Dell tech support, got to a human almost immediately, they overnighted some parts to a local technician, who came to my house 2 days after the call and installed the new parts. All of this was covered by my basic 2-year included warranty.
My wife's had a problem with the display. I called Dell tech support, got a human almost immediately, they told me how to figure out whether the problem was the actual display or the video card. Once we determined it was the display, they overnighted a new display to a local technician, who came to our house and installed it. Unfortunately, the new display is slightly grainy looking, so we will call Dell and request a replacement...Read more›

Epson Powerlite 755C LCD Projector Wireless 3.8LBS Review

Epson Powerlite 755C LCD Projector Wireless 3.8LBS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
7 months of use. Well, no problems yet, Epson quality speaks for itself.
It was purchased as an office projector and the idea was to get rid of "wiring problem"... that what my boss told me... hmm, actually he just wanted to show how smart he is by doing next presentation with his phone. He did it a couple of times and was happy. I barely could understand why did we need a projector for $2000 to show us his smartphone, so I started to play with the most interesting features that this projector has.
First, it is very simple in use. At least for me. I'm not talking about PowerPoint presentation with laptop via serial connection. Of course, it can do this too, but I don't think you need to pay $2000 if you want just this. Wireless connection. As I've mentioned above, our boss without any problems got connection with his Sony Ericsson. I used my laptop and got the same result. I also tried encryption. I can not say how well it is and why do you need this security stuff unless you are doing your presentation for hackers conference, but it seems working.
The most interesting thing I wanted to try is playing video. By that time this projector was not screwed to the selling, and I had an idea to get it home to watch some movies on the wall with 200" diag. It was the first projector (I had an experience with about 10 of them) which started to play video without any additional help from me. I had several awesome nights with coke and popcorn...
Anyway, the image was sharp, the bulb was bright and, thanks God, it doesn't have so noticeable pixel grid! I saw a lot of LCD projectors with this lack. And of course you can not avoid using wireless feature with selling mounted projector.
Overall, the best wireless projector I've ever used.

I've had very mixed luck with this machine. The pros listed in the very positive reviews are right on--it is fast, it is sleek and light etc etc. However, I've experienced some serious problems with this machine:
1. The drivers for the video card are incredibly buggy, and routinely lead to the screen blanking out (this is a well known problem, and it still hasn't been satisfactorily fixed).
2. Windows vista has never worked well. I'm not sure if this is a Vista issue or a hardware issue, but this machine and this OS have not worked well together (e.g. I initially could not shut the machine off except by using the power button--vista has a lot of shutdown options, all of them simply froze the computer; the machine still crashes, freezes and slows down at random).
3. I've had problems with the Wi-Fi -- it's simply not that great at picking up a signal. On several occasions I've had to borrow a laptop to get online; other machines were picking up the signal but not this one.
4. The computer regularly simply stops working. It won't start, or if it does it won't boot. I suspect it was simply set up very poorly by whatever Dell tech put things together. I paid a computer technician a couple hundred bucks to go through the system, and this made things a lot better--but it made the problems less frequent rather than cured them.
A simple summary of my experience with this machine can be summed up by this fact: I'm writing this review on my wife's MacBook because my XPS is currently in its "I'm not working today" mode.
I've been a huge Dell customer over the years--this is my fifth machine ordered from Dell. There will not be a sixth.

I was looking for a reasonable replacement for my terminally ill Sony Vaio that I bought just over 5 years ago. The specs on this Lenovo looked right in terms of speed, storage, size, and bells and whistles and was a 4-5 fold upgrade from the Sony. So far, I cannot complain. Set-up took less than 30 minutes. Microsoft Office Pro nice and fast (purchased separately). Browsing fast. Speaker/Sound nice for this size machine. Keyboard is a bit old school with the firmer key. I can see why some might not like that, but it feels like sturdy quality to me (back lit WOULD be nice). Windows 7 will take a little getting used to from XP. The notebook actually weighs 4.5 lbs, NOT 8 as advertised on this amazon product description, so that is a plus! 3 USB ports is a nice feature and I look forward to trying out a Bluetooth mouse. This Lenovo has a DVD/RW which it seems is uncommon for a Thinkpad this size and price. The fingerprint security system I am also liking so far. I also think it is somewhat upgradeable so if that is important to you, definitely check out the details. The only real compromise I made was in battery life; I was hoping to find a Lenovo with the 7-8 hour battery life, but this one advertises as 4.5 only (which is still a 2 hour improvement from my Sony). Some folks haven't been too impressed with the Intel Core i3 processor (it's a 3 out of 5 star rating) but this is faster than anything I've owned. Perhaps that will change as I collect more pics/videos/programs/junk over the coming years. Anyhow, the price WAS 599.99 plus 19.99 SH, but it looks like the price went up a few days ago on Amazon. J&R.com did have this for $550 and free next day shipping if you called them directly, but it recently sold out. Laptop Authority may still have it for around $560 with free shipping no tax. I think if you are looking for something that meets current competition standards with Windows under $600 this is the right machine for you.
