Sony MEX-BT5000 - Radio / CD / MP3 player - Full-DIN - in-dash - 52 Watts x 4 Review

Sony MEX-BT5000 - Radio / CD / MP3 player - Full-DIN - in-dash - 52 Watts x 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Been a Sony car head unit user since many years ago I decided to give it a try and as a one solution to integrate Ipod and a BT hands free in one unit so let's say it could be worse. Installation is a breeze because there isn't extra speakers or mic to set. Just hook the speakers and power cables as any standard unit, plug the Ipod adapter, set and match the cell and that's it. Be aware it is hard to read the display when the sun hit it. Also digits are very small.
Unfortunately Ipod integration is a disaster as other reviewers noted with the XA-110IP. I also tested a ipod2car 2nd gen (with it's Sony interface wiring harness) which work great on my other older Sony head units but in the MEX-BT5000 it is not recognized. Is a shame because it's way better than the XA-110IP.
Sound through the bluetooth interface is a joke. Have tried several devices and they sound terrible. Is like hearing music through your home phone.
Cell Bluetooth interface has some issues and callers report severe echo. Having the mic integrated in the head unit has it's cons, setting a mic on better places could improve a lot the echo but unfortunately that's not possible.
Another concern is that the MEX-BT5000 doesn't have the option to update it's bluetooth software to keep it more integrated with newer phones.
On another vehicle I have both a standard Sony Head Unit and a Parrot 3200 bluetooth hansdfree device and this one is the best handsfree I have seen so far, it's so user friendly, has so many features like the phone book which is spelled through the speakers, and it's software can be updated by the user with a bluetooth equiped laptop as I already did. I located the mic in a optimum place and callers hear me clearly.
It's a fact: a company only dedicated to make stand alone handsfrees or ipod interfaces will have a better product against a manufacturer that makes them all by itself.
If you can afford it go for a dedicated Handsfree like the Parrot 3200 (sound goes through the stock speakers) and choose a better (non Sony for now) Ipod interface. If budget is tight just go for a dock hooked to the Sony aux input and control the iPod directly.

Alpine TUA-T550HD - HD radio tuner Review

Alpine TUA-T550HD - HD radio tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got one of these and it didn't pick up many stations but sounded great. Thought the reception was normal from the HD reviews I've read. But then it would not turn on when I started the car -- just dead. The regular tuner came on but had no antenna so it didn't work. Turning off the car and turning it back on "fixed" it for a couple of days but then it started getting worse. Got the unit replaced.
The new unit picks up MANY more stations than the first and worked good for a couple of weeks. Now its starting to have dead audio occasionally when I turn on the car. The difference with this one is that the radio comes on -- says 'digital' on the faceplate -- but there is no audio until you turn off the car. That's right, turn off the car, not the radio. Then it usually works when the car is turned back on.
This is very annoying. Alpine makes an amazing amplifier in the 9885 and it is awesome with my iPod connected directly to the radio. But the radio in the 9885 sucks, which is why I bought the HD radio, but the HD radio has its own kinds of problems.
Unless you really like putting up with problems, don't get this tuner until the bugs are worked out.

Alpine iDA-X100 Digital Media Receiver Review

Alpine iDA-X100 Digital Media Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've made my way through a bunch of different car stereo head units over the years, but ever since the iPod has become the de-facto standard, I've wondered why nobody made a decent iPod-friendly one. Alpine's iDA-X100 is probably the first usable product for this purpose (its predecessor, the X001 was essentially a beta-tester version of the X100, and by many accounts, not ready for prime time). Sure, there are a slew of crummy FM transmitter adapters, and many stereos have auxiliary (Aux) inputs, but those are merely kludges.
The X100 displays the artist, track, and album of the currently-playing song. It lets you quickly scroll through all your artists, tracks, and albums, so you can find the song you want fast. All this works very well, and does so while charging your iPod in your glove compartment or wherever you want to put it. Don't have an iPod? No problem - just put your tunes on any inexpensive USB memory key and plug it in!
The X100's bright screen rivals a typical iPod screen, although is definitely a step down from my iPhone. The volume knob, which also affords navigation through your collection, is large and comfortable. In all, a solid design designed for use while driving. (This means that, unlike the iPod itself, you can use without having to look at it.)
So, why not five stars? First, the screen is too small. With the X100's large, easy-to-read font, there's only room for 6-7 characters. Listening to the White Stripes? You'll only see "White S" on the screen. Sure, 'long' text scrolls back and fourth, but that's a poor design for drivers who need to keep their eyes on the road. If I had designed this unit, I would've moved the big knob all the way to the left, and made the screen twice as wide. As it is, the left side is wasted anyway.
Second, when a song begins playing, the text rolls out on the screen very slowly, like it's being typed one letter at a time from a typewriter. It can take 10-15 seconds before everything appears, making it a stupid design for a display that must relay all its information at a glance.
Third, the 'Back' and 'Next' buttons are small and flush with the surface of the unit; you can't use the big wheel to go to the next track. These buttons should be more prominent, perhaps akin to the slick lever on Sony's excellent CDX-C90.
Fourth, the X100 can be set to have blue or red backlighting. But the red is a harsh, dark crimson that looks terrible next to the amber lighting on my dashboard. Why no soft amber/orange setting? Who knows.
Fifth, the X100 can display cover art from the current song (provided you've loaded one into iTunes), but, for some reason, it displays a very low-resolution image. This is particularly glaring when you hit the Display button to hide the text and display only the cover art; it just looks bad. I have high-res cover art in my collection that looks great on my iPhone's screen, but the X100 just doesn't use it. Perhaps a firmware upgrade will fix this?
Finally, and it may sound like nit-picking, but the X100's customizable wallpaper feature is poorly executed. You have two trendy patterns from which to choose, or you can download additional patterns from Alpine's awful website (which was last updated in 2005, by the way, and only works on Internet Explorer). Although Alpine has gone out of their way to prevent customers from creating their own wallpaper (for reasons that completely elude me), you can do as I did and download the free, third-party xndconverter.exe utility and create your own APN files. With my own photo as the wallpaper, the X100 head unit actually now looks nice in my car, despite the lack of a matching backlight color.
As for the sound quality (which is supremely important, despite the fact that I've spent most of this review talking about the interface), I'd rate it a solid 'B.' The sound is pretty good, but lacks the richness and warmth of the gold standard, the Sony CDX-C90 (even when playing the very same MP3s). Perhaps the PXA-H100 IMPRINT add-on accessory will improve the sound, but I haven't tried it yet.
To sum up, this is THE unit to get if you want to listen to your iPod/iPhone in the car, but don't expect it to be perfect. I'd give it only three stars if there were competition, but since it's the only worthy game in town, it earns four.
(Note: At the time of this writing, Alpine also makes the ida-x200 and ida-x300, but these are lesser models, both without the X100's bright color screen.)

PYLE PLD3MU 3-Inch TFT Touch Screen DVD/VCD/MP3/CDR/USB Player and AM/FM Receiver Review

PYLE PLD3MU 3-Inch TFT Touch Screen DVD/VCD/MP3/CDR/USB Player and AM/FM Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just installed my Pyle PLD3MU and had the chance to do some testing with it. Overall I am impressed with all of the features and functions it has. There are some quirks and the instructions are poorly translated but for the price I feel the total package was a good deal.
DVD - It plays DVDs well - the screen is rather clear for its size. I wouldn't equate it to an ipod or iphone video screen but it has more than adequate resolution for a tiny screen. Hardly jagged edges if at all. Excellent viewing angle and lots of color/tint contrast settings that I can adjust. I'm playing the DVD through an overhead mounted LCD screen and the resolution is adequate for passenger viewing but not HD... so don't expect perfection here.
CD - the sound is great but out of the box the display of the track, time, etc is so small it can hardly be read. I am not sure if the display size can be adjusted or not in CD mode (haven't tried yet).
Radio AM/FM operation - works good; it appears the pre-sets must be done automatically, I haven't found a way to set my own stations. Since there are no preset buttons I supppose you just auto-program and skip from station to station. Not quite as fast as presets but close enough. The display is much better for AM/FM radio than for CDs, it has nice big letters and selectable backgrounds. Clock only shows military time from what I can tell (i.e. 00:00 to 23:59).
Remote control works good out of the box. Button presses are reliable. To FF or RW a DVD, hold down the skip forward or skip back buttons while aiming at the screen.
When switching between sources, there is a short period of blue screen with source name listed, then the desired selection will show.
Touch screen is easy to use and seems to associate finger vs. intent rather accurately. Not too soft or squishy. Detachable face detaches and attaches akwardly but easily enough. When removed, the rectangular LED under the disc slot blinks slowly to indicate anti-theft while the car is off. I appreciate this because higher end units seem to have gotten rid of the blinking LEDs when face is detached (at least Kenwood has).
The instructions included with the unit are sparse. Some areas not translated into english very well. However, I had no problem installing because the wiring all matches the aftermarket in-dash recevier convention for colors of wires. There is a matching wiring diagram on the bottom of the unit affixed as a sticker, in case the one in the manual gets lost or is not available. A large square connector is at the end of all the wires to facilitate testing at the factory. It must be cut off to allow for installation to a vehicle specific pigtail adapter. Manual didn't explain this.
The brake wire (gray or brown) from the back of the unit needs to go to a ground (-) source when the car is not moving (example: parking brake or foot pedal brake). If your brake activates a positive lead like my Dodge pickup, you'll need to find another way to ground the unit to be able to see the video on the 3" TFT screen. Whenever this lead is connected to ground, the video will show on the detachable face screen. The video output always shows through the video out port regardless of brake wire connection or not.

JVC KD-BT11 Single DIN In-Dash CD Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth (Silver) Review

JVC KD-BT11 Single DIN In-Dash CD Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me explain this product in one sentence: A steal for the price. The deck is comparable to most on the market right now other than the fact that it has bluetooth built in. I was using the bluetooth with my phone in seconds - making calls, streaming music. I have read reviews elsewhere that complain about navigating through the menu, I find these complaints unsubstantiated. Although not purely intuitive they were graspable without picking up the manual and looking things up - the only thing I had to revert to instructions for was setting the clock. The sound has been good, no objections there - and the equalizer functions are minimal but in my opinion adequate (I've had decks with crazy equalizers that have gone unused so this one was a good switch for me). I intend to add the ipod interface ($30-$40 on amazon) as well as the HD radio tuner (not on amazon at the time of the review but available for around $100 if you really look around). So, for about $300 I'll have a bluetooth, HD radio, that can control and charge my ipod (through the stereo). Try to find anything that can do all that for the same price and I'll give you a cookie.
A quick note about the bluetooth quality (in regard to talking on the phone). There is a mic in the stereo that picks up your voice as you hear the person you're speaking with through your speakers. As an artifact of this setup at times the person will hear their echo (one must deal with it). People will know they are on speakerphone, but conversations can be had with ease. So far all the calls I've made have been successful, in other words no one has said 'you've got to get me off speakerphone'. All in all I'm happy with the quality and I assume if my car were more airtight the person would hear me much better.
One potential problem: there is only one set of pre-outs, so those of you with big ideas about expanding drastically should look into a deck with front, rear, and sub outs (3 total). I however am doing a downgrade and the single pre-out worked fine for me.

Alpine CDE-126BT - Radio / CD / MP3 player / digital player - Full-DIN - in-dash - 50 Watts x 4 Review

Alpine CDE-126BT - Radio / CD / MP3 player / digital player - Full-DIN - in-dash - 50 Watts x 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading another review I felt the need to write a review on this great radio. The Alpine CDE-126BT replaced the stock radio in my 2003 (7.3L) F250 which had a broken CD player. I've been looking and reading reviews on and off since purchasing the truck used 2 years ago. Since I already had all my music converted to iTunes in Apple lossless I really wanted to be able to use my iPod 120gb classic in my truck. In the past there seemed to be mixed reviews with functionality using this and many iPod/iPhone/iWhatevers including a friend's older 80gb classic and older Alpine radio with built-in iPod support. His combination doesn't work very well but does somewhat work.
After doing some reading again I ended up with this Alpine CDE-126BT. If you compare it to the CDE-125BT it's slightly more money but includes the iPod adapter which plugs into the rear of the radio. It also includes a few other additional functionality such as 4-channel pre-amp. I'd suggest purchasing a little more radio than you currently need just to future proof it a bit. You'll at least have options if you decide to add an amp or two plus they normally include some additional controls you may need.
Anyway, just prior to installing the CDE-126BT I put some Alpine 6 ½ component speakers I had from a previous vehicle in the front doors. This did help with sound quality even with the stock deck but with the CDE-126BT and the iPod it was awesome! I really wasn't expecting it to be this good. Although the big diesel motor is somewhat loud the clarity still stands out. As far as the iPod 120gb Classic, it works great and is fully controlled from the radio. Just be sure to use the included cable and plug it in the rear of the deck. Why wouldn't you just use it!? Searching is easy enough once you get used to the controls. Yes you do need to learn how to get around! It also includes a small quick reference book to carry in the vehicle.
Bluetooth - I really didn't purchase the radio because of this but why not hook it up? Did I mention the truck is loud? It also does work way better than I thought. People on the other end do hear the motor at highway or every speed but say it's acceptable. Placing and receiving calls are really easy and with my Motorola Atrix it also displays the person's contact information.
Supported devices - Download the manual and check page 24 to see for yourself what's support. If you still have issues and it's on the list contact Alpine directly for support, don't just complain about it on a forum!

Valor SD-906W In-Dash 1 DIN AM/FM/CD/DVD Motorized 7-Inch Monitor Review

Valor SD-906W In-Dash 1 DIN AM/FM/CD/DVD Motorized 7-Inch Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The good:
Easy installation.
Screen is large and bright.
Price on Amazon is great.
Love all the useful features in one unit...when they work.
User Manual and wiring is easy to understand.

The bad:
Valor support is poor. Sent a help request 3 days ago to Valor about the touch screen not responding to my touch (after a week of ownership). Haven't heard back. I tried restarting stereo, and the remote control functioned but not TS. Recalibrating was not possible. After turning off car and waiting until the next day, problem went away. If it happens again, I will revise my review.
***REVISION*** The touch screen continuously stops working when the unit gets hot. This has happened dozens of times in the couple months I've owned the unit. It works again after the car is turned off for a while, but it lost another star because it is annoying, and Valor support never responded to my inquiry above.
Also, I have yet to find a brand of SD media card that the unit will read without getting "device not supported" (I've tried reformatting 2 brands of SD cards in FAT32 and NTFS and it still doesn't read them).
It also takes a good 30 seconds for the player to scan a DVD full of mp3's, or to scan USB media...not a deal breaker...but you would be surprised what this can do at 6AM when you forgot you attempted an awfully loud singalong and butchering of "Run to the Hills" the previous night. I nearly soiled my pants the morning my stereo resumed play at the same loud volume. Luckily you can set a resume volume, and I highly suggest going that route.
One more thing...the screen ejection mechanism seems fragile and likely to fail some time after the warranty expires.

The ugly:
Me singing "Run to the Hills"...and the fact that the blue LEDs do not match my orange dash lights, but real men do not care about that...or so I'm told. Conclusion:
Lost 2 stars because the verdict is still out on the the long-term durability, and Valor's support and website need serious improvement. I may have to send it back. For now, when all the features do work, it's lovely.
I recommend filling out and sending off the Valor warranty card to make sure you get your full one year manufacturer support.

The Alpine CDE-125BT system is a great stereo for the price. One thing that I think is absolutely necessary, is the addition of the KTP-445 booster. They make the upgrade installation of the booster, the simplest I have ever seen in automotive stereo systems. With quality speakers, the boost is a must. The power pack can be tucked away under the dash, and does not have to be secured by anything more than cable ties. I secured mine with screws as the installation was in a boat, near a stringer of wood behind the dash.
I don't know about the phone portion, as I do not talk as I drive, or steer a boat in my case.
The KCE-433iv cable for adapting the IPOD, being an "extra option" is not fair, but you can get that on Ebay for $6 with free shipping from Hong Kong.
Anyway, I installed this in my boat because I liked the USB, and IPOD capabilities that should solve the problem of the antiquated CD and it's inherent skipping while skimming across the lake.
Installation was easy, but they should have included the strap that supports the back and center of the unit. I was lucky to have one from a previous installation.
We shall see how it holds up this summer, and I will follow up if my opinion changes over the life of the unit.

I received my in a timely manner. it installed easily and worked well...for a while. I purchased this product in June. the summer heat here got in the high 90's, so the inside heat in my white pickup was pretty hot. my lanzar unit kept trying to default to DVD mode and sometimes the screen wouldn't come on untill the A/C cooled things down a bit.
The music sounds great and the DVD picture and sound is great, the radio reception could definitely be better. But the graphics of the display while in radio and aux mode are really bad. All the touch buttons work fine but look like 1980's software graphics, it's embarrassing and i found no way to do visual upgrades. There's also a usb port on the front that i never was able to use but tried, there's no clear instruction how to use it.
Ok, so now it's October and we had a cold front move through. I got in my pickup early that morning and the temperature was about 25 degrees. the display quit working permanently but everything else still works, even the touch screen. but it's hard to navigate a touch screen with no display.
All in all everything worked how expected but it doesn't do extreme temperature too well. if you think that was extreme..

UPDATE: Crutchfield had Alpine provide me with another unit with updated firmware (Version 310, I think) and I haven't had a problem since. Crutchfield told me they were having Alpine replace all the units they had in stock with the updated version.
I love the unit and recommend you' get it from Crutchfield so you get the updated firmware.
ORIGINAL: I'm having the same issue as Buyer Beware, the internal amp often shuts off when the ignition is turned off as well as the Bluetooth.
But I like the unit so much I still give it 4 stars.
If Alpine would issue a software update and resolve the issue I would give it 5 stars.
I have documented the bug on youtube, just search for CDE-103BT Software Bug.

Boss BV9995B In-Dash 7" DVD/MP3/CD Widescreen Receiver with USB, SD Card, and Front Panel AUX Input (Detachable Front Panel) Review

Boss BV9995B In-Dash 7 DVD/MP3/CD Widescreen Receiver with USB, SD Card, and Front Panel AUX Input (Detachable Front Panel)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
1. The positive
---------------
* Excellent screen size and resolution
* Versatile (can play numerous video and audio formats, plenty of inpus: SD card, USB, DVD/CD, Bluetooth, auxilary)
* The USB input works flawlessly, recognizing the files fairly quickly
* The LCD has 3 different tilt levels for better viewing angles, and various brightness settings
* Looks and feels well-built / solid
* Auxilary input in the front (3.5") allows for easy connecting of MP3 players / cell phones (particularly useful since the Bluetooth is worthless on this device, per below)
* Comes with a small remote
2. The negative
---------------
(1) The Bluetooth: Drops out all the time, listening to Pandora or other streaming radio through the cell phone impossible. The sound quality with the included microphone is mediocre at best. Have not tried to pair the Bluetooth with a laptop or a device with a more powerful Bluetooth signal than a cell phone, but again, I don't plan on using a laptop while driving. Hence, the Bluetooth is worthless in my opinion.
(2) For some reason, after few hours of continuous watching, the movies running off the USB start 'skipping', which can get very obnoxious. Thankfully, this only happens occasionally, and it may have something to do with overheating of components while driving in a hot summer day, even though the device has a cooling fan in the back.
(3) In addition to the $25 for the wire harness, a $15 antenna harness is required ($40 at worstbuy; I was quoted $60+ elsewhere). The radio is not HD/digital and the reception quality is noticingly worse than my stock stereo.
(4) The SD card input is very slow, taking 1-2 minutes to "load up" the list of songs on a 4GB card. The recognition is much faster with a high quality SD card with smaller capacity (i.e. 2GB Sandisk ultra/extreme).
(3) The cooling fan can be loud, and the LCD brightness is not adequate for bright, sunny days. The movies are still watchable with the screen tilted down, but much is washed out.
(6) The remote must be directly pointed at the IR sensor to work, and the layout is not very user friendly / intuitive
SUMMARY
-------
Overall, it's far from a perfect device, but comparing its price to some bigger names (which I'm guessing are no better in addressing the issues I mentioned earlier), and the amount of joy it provides on loooong cross-country drives, this system is well worth it...

I purchased it last month, and had installed immediately. I have not upgraded my factory speakers, but the increase in sound quality was immediately noticible. The touch screen has the appropriate sensativity in my opinion. The quality of the dvd picture is EXCELLENT. Looks no different than a smaller version of my 50 inch Samsung Plasma. Tom Tom plugs easily into the port and displays perfectly. Has a hook up for a rear back up camera, that can be activated by a simple touch of the screen. Cd player works excellently. Plays multimedia, so hook up any device you can think of, and dj from the passenger seat. Those who are intending to purchase must realize the the screen flips upward. Be cautious of what it may block in the process. If you have vents above your deck area, I would advise you to choose another radio. I bought it for a 2001 Dodge Conversion Van, and the only issue I have is the gearshift, which I must pull toward myself, to allow the screen to go up without being blocked. DVD player has a block that does not allow it to play while car is in gear, but I hear that there is a way around it (wink wink), but try not to allow it to distract the driver. I also purchased a 20 inch Fold down Pyle TV, which is connected to my radio, so I can show the dvd's there, and fold down the screen in the front so the driver is not disturbed. I hope this review is helpful to you all, and I wish you all a happy, fruitful, and blessed New Year. Godspeed.

Alpine PXA-H100 - Audio signal processor Review

Alpine PXA-H100 - Audio signal processor
Average Reviews:

I purchased this along with the auto-calibration kit (the KTX-h100) for my new car system. I set the system up and tried it without calibration first, other than tweaking the fade and bass/trebel. I thought it sounded pretty darn good.
I then did the sound measurement calibration with the microphone and there was a BIG difference in sound quality (it lets you turn the multi-eq on and off, to hear before and after calibration results). So much so, that I found myself wondering if the stereo really sounded that much worse before. I had a friend who had heard the system before calibration listen to it again with Multi-EQ off to see if he thought it sounded the same, which he did.
Bottom line: this thing WILL improve your sound quality ALOT if you (like me) don't have the faintest idea what needs to be tweaked in an advanced equalizer to get your system sounding better. The biggest difference you will notice is that with this thing on, you can't really tell where your music is coming from, instead of before when, if you tried, you could clearly make out where the speakers were. In other words, it makes it seem as if the music is just appearing in midair around you, instead of from the doors in your car (at least for me). On top of that, the music just sounds much better, like a stock system vs aftermarket all over again. Of course I would not recommend this unless you have invested in good speakers all around for your car. I'm using Bostons and a Basslink II in the trunk.

Kenwood KCA-BT100 - Car audio Bluetooth adapter Review

Kenwood KCA-BT100 - Car audio Bluetooth adapter
Average Reviews:

Reasonably priced and fantastic sound. I love the way it connects automatically when I start the truck. When I get an incoming call, it answers automatically and mutes the stereo - perfect! Dialing out is awkward (they really want you to stop the truck before dialing). I also have to use my cell phone keypad to "enter 1 for english". The biggest issue is the interface for the cell phone directory. I wish it would just read it dynamically like my Garmin Nuvi 660 does. The KCA-BT100 requires you to "send a business card" for each entry. A lot of key strokes for 90 entries. Other cell phones reportedly can upload the entire directory - but my cell phone provider does not have them. I definitely would buy it again.

Dual XML8150 Mechless 240 Watt AM/FM/MP3/WMA/AAC Receiver Review

Dual XML8150 Mechless 240 Watt AM/FM/MP3/WMA/AAC Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought mine at wally world for $125 (regular price). I see them as low as $107 on google shopping. Not a lot of places carry them yet.
I have to say I've been VERY surprised at the value of this product after having it now for a couple of weeks. The last few decks I've bought have been these low name brand decks because they are the first (by many years) to introduce innovative features, and at amazing prices! Sometimes they can be built cheaply, have poor sound quality, etc. So I have to admit I set myself up with low expectations of such a unit in case it ends up being junk. But this unit surpassed my expectations by several miles! I'm VERY happy with it.
Feature wise, the XML8150 had exactly what I wanted...
~ Drop the CD drive (a media I haven't used in years).
~ A dock for my iPhone 4 with both audio and charging through the data port.
~ Dock that supports both landscape and vertical.
~ Dock that can be hidden when not in use.
~ Dock that works even with protective covers on the iPhone.
~ Natively work with the iPhone and not display a "this device was not made for iPhone yadda yadda" warning.
~ Can play Pandora, videos, etc from iPhone, not just music.
~ USB thumb drive support.
~ SD card reader.
~ Aux in on the front.
~ Bluetooth phone dialing.
~ Separate line outs for front, rear, and sub.
~ HD Radio ready (need HDM90 unit, about $60 on the web).
~ Rotary volume knob with rubber grip surface (or some other non-slip surface).
~ Good control of audio settings. In addition to basic balance/fader and bass/treble, it has midrange, sub control, and user definable EQ.
The unit also has a connector in the back for some kind of steering wheel control interface, but at the moment I can't find anything to connect to it. It might be for a future, yet to be released, unit. Another feature it has but I don't plan on using is Bluetooth HD audio. This lets it play audio from your iPhone via HD Bluetooth, so the phone can be in your pocket and playing out your stereo. Very cool, but I feel I just won't use it because I would rather dock it where it will charge and I can see the screen. Also, the stereo has a IR wireless remote control, like a TV remote. Lots of stereos now a day's come with these, but I rarely use them, however, they come in handy when you're in the rear seat or trunk while testing/tuning speaker/amp adjustments, or if you want the rear seat passenger to control the stereo.
After installing it and getting into the details of it, I found another feature that I typically only see on much higher end units. Audio settings (bass/mid/treble/EQ/etc) are set per input (radio/iPhone/usb/sd/etc). In addition, it even provides a leveling value per input. So this means you can tweak each input so that they all sound the same. This is a very nice feature. Ever had a stereo where the radio was always way louder/quieter than the CD or iPod? Well you can balance all the inputs on this unit so they all have the same tonal quality and volume levels.
At the moment I have this hooked up in a Lincoln Town Car with deck power running the factory door and rear deck speakers, and the sub line out going to a single 12 inch sub in the trunk. It sounds amazing! I do plan on getting better interior speakers, but until then being able to tweak the midrange and EQ settings to make the factory speakers sound pretty decent is a huge deal.
The iPod/iPhone dock works great. I use an iPhone 4 with a protective case and it's easy to dock and undock the phone one handed. It holds the phone very well, no worry of it falling out. The dock is pretty stable and doesn't shake or move much while driving, I am driving a boat with a very smooth ride, so no experience with a firm ride, but I think it would be fine. The doc can rotate between one of two positions, either vertical or horizontal. It only turns 90 degrees, so phone cannot be upside down and when sideways, the home button is on the left only. The arm that the dock is mounted too can bend to change the angle of the phone to point towards you, however, it cannot be twisted, so the phone will be oriented to the angle the deck is mounted in the dash. All audio, controls and power are through the dock connector, you don't connect anything through the headphone jack. I've had other docks that could not charge the phone very well when doing something CPU intensive like Pandora or GPS, but the XML8150 charges my iPhone no problem no matter what its doing.
One thing to note about iPhone usage is that things like Pandora, GPS, etc still need to be done via the phone's screen/UI. Only the iPod music on the phone is controlled by the decks buttons, so when I play Pandora for example, the screen still shows the name of the song is was playing from my iPod list. Doesn't bother me at all though since I would rather see the album art and what not on the iPhone screen.
The dock can be collapsed and folded in behind the faceplate. Its quick and easy to do with one hand. Only thing that kind of sucks is that you have to slide the support arm (the holds the top of the iPhone/iPod) down to fold it in, which means, that when you fold it back out, you have to reposition the arm again. Not a big deal, but does mean that I end up folding it in a lot less. Again not a big deal for me because I almost always dock my phone while driving and don't care about the dock hanging out when not using it, but if you're expecting to fold up the dock a lot, this could be annoying.
The build quality of the unit is very solid. The entire dock arm, faceplate mechanism, the buttons, etc are all very solid, fit together tightly and have a smooth surface. The controls are easy to navigate. The volume control is rotary with a very slight indexed feel as you rotate it. It also has a rubber edge so it's easy to grip and turn, even with the side of your finger, so many rotary knobs on decks are slick and can be hard for me to turn at time.
So all this goodness for only $125, why the 4 star? It's for the Bluetooth phone support. It comes with a mic (that mounts to your visor) but I have to hold the mic right up to my mouth or yell before the other person can hear me. Its unusable like this. I cannot find a way to adjust the volume. I've sent a mail to Dual asking about it. If they resolve it, I'll update the review to 5 star easy. Other than the mic, the Bluetooth dialing works great. It was dead easy to pair my phone and when someone calls, the deck lowers the music volume, plays my ringtone out my car speakers and I just click the green phone button on the faceplate and start talking to the person. Their voice comes out the cars speakers and very easy to hear them. If they don't have a solution, I may try other mics and update this review if I find something that works.
So in short, this is way worth the $125, by far. It's a solid unit (minus the poor Bluetooth mic), sounds great, and feature wise does everything I want in my modern iPhone/SD/USB music world. I would recommend this (and have) without hesitation.
UPDATE 3/21/2011
At first I didn't think I would use the Bluetooth HD streaming audio feature, but after having this unit for several weeks, I found myself using this feature quite a lot. It works great. I use it for short trips like to the store as I don't even have to take my phone out of my pocket. Just hope in the car, select bluetooth audio and hit play and whatever was the last audio playing on my phone starts up and plays (with phone still in my pocket). Works with Pandora, iPod, and even the SiriusXM app. You have less control though since you can only skip forward/back and play/pause, but for short trips this is nice. For longer trips I plug the phone into the dock.
