Phase Linear UV8020 MP3/WMA/USB/SD Card/DVD Receiver with 7 Inch Screen (Black) Review

Phase Linear UV8020 MP3/WMA/USB/SD Card/DVD Receiver with 7 Inch Screen (Black)

I was a little apprehensive to buy one of these because of the low price and the myriad of features that it performed. But I went ahead and bought one. I bought a 3 yr warranty from squaretrade just in case it broke. I was especially concerned with the motorized screen which slides down when you need to insert or remove a DVD,CD, or SD card. Once the package actually arrived the unit felt very nice and seemed to be built solidly. I installed this myself in my Lexus. It has 5 preamp RCA outputs which includes a subwoofer output. It also has 2 RCA video outs and 1 RCA video input for a backup camera. It also comes with a remote (feels a little cheap but works adequately). I was a little diappointed with the front AUX input as it is smaller than a standard headphone jack and you have to use a nonstandard cable (they provide 1 cable for audio only and 1 for video/audio). If your looking for Bluetoooth, Navigation, or Satellite ready, look elsewhwere.
Pros:
Lots of features. It also seems to have excellent laser quality as it plays many of my CD's which are so scratched up they will not play in any other player I own. You can play music (not video) from an SD card. In fact if you have pictures on an SD card you can play them in a slideshow. DVD playback works as it should and it has an auto resume feature so even once you shut off the car it will return to the point in the movie you were at. The unit sounds good with no hum or high pitch whine linked to engine rpm like you experience with some units. The motorized screen works well and feels solid and strong. The radio receiver seems to pick up more stations than my factory radio did.
Cons:
I wish it had some visualizations while you were listening to music. For instance even a bouncing EQ or ANY animation. Instead while listening to CD's it does have a graphic, but nothing more. It seems a shame to waste that beautiful 7" screen. Several of the features can only be accessed via the remote. This could be a problem if you lose it or break it. Included instructions were lacking, however most people should be able to use it without any instructions needed. It only supports regular SD cards, so no 4GB or larger cards will work. It simply says SD card error if you try. The screen does seem to get washed out when the sunlight hits it directly. (however pretty much ALL LCD screens do this).
UPDATE:
I've had this unit for around six months now with zero problems.

Pioneer DEH-P5000UB In-Dash CD/MP3/WMA/iTunes AAC/WAV Receiver Review

Average Reviews:

I purchased this to replace the stock radio in my 2006 F150 4x4. I read the reviews here and elsewhere and was a little bit concerned about the interface in regards to it being non-intuitive and the knob flimsy. I disagree on both counts. The interface is very intuitive once you learn it, and the knob is by no means flimsy. Also, there were comments regarding the lack of presets - this is not a problem at all - when the radio is in tuner mode one only needs to push up or down on the knob to advance to the next preset. There was another complaint regarding the clock - all I can say to that is, read the manual!
My stock radio had very good AM reception but poor FM reception. I was afraid I would lose good AM reception with the new radio, but the AM reception is just as good if not better.
I use this radio with my iPod Touch 2nd generation and again, no complaints. I am a mild audiophile and the output sounds very clean to me in all modes.
I do agree that there should be a mute or pause button on the radio itself in case the remote is not handy. Other than that, this is a great product for the price.

Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity--the way the artist intended it--from all of your highly compressed MP3, WMA, and AAC files stored on USB memory device, iPod, and portable digital players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tend to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies. When Advanced Sound Retriever is "ON," the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve of the original sound.

• Link Search-- While listening to a specific artist, hold "List" button to pop up folders containing that specific artist.
• Passenger Control Mode--Allows passenger to use the iPod directly to browse and select music, while connected to the head unit for playback.
• Random (Shuffle) Key--Physical Random Button on faceplate (Shuffle) makes it easy to hear something fresh.

JVC KD-BT11 Single DIN In-Dash CD Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth (Silver) Review

JVC KD-BT11 Single DIN In-Dash CD Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me explain this product in one sentence: A steal for the price. The deck is comparable to most on the market right now other than the fact that it has bluetooth built in. I was using the bluetooth with my phone in seconds - making calls, streaming music. I have read reviews elsewhere that complain about navigating through the menu, I find these complaints unsubstantiated. Although not purely intuitive they were graspable without picking up the manual and looking things up - the only thing I had to revert to instructions for was setting the clock. The sound has been good, no objections there - and the equalizer functions are minimal but in my opinion adequate (I've had decks with crazy equalizers that have gone unused so this one was a good switch for me). I intend to add the ipod interface ($30-$40 on amazon) as well as the HD radio tuner (not on amazon at the time of the review but available for around $100 if you really look around). So, for about $300 I'll have a bluetooth, HD radio, that can control and charge my ipod (through the stereo). Try to find anything that can do all that for the same price and I'll give you a cookie.
A quick note about the bluetooth quality (in regard to talking on the phone). There is a mic in the stereo that picks up your voice as you hear the person you're speaking with through your speakers. As an artifact of this setup at times the person will hear their echo (one must deal with it). People will know they are on speakerphone, but conversations can be had with ease. So far all the calls I've made have been successful, in other words no one has said 'you've got to get me off speakerphone'. All in all I'm happy with the quality and I assume if my car were more airtight the person would hear me much better.
One potential problem: there is only one set of pre-outs, so those of you with big ideas about expanding drastically should look into a deck with front, rear, and sub outs (3 total). I however am doing a downgrade and the single pre-out worked fine for me.

Power Acoustik NAVIBOX-1 Navigation Add-On Module Review

This review is in conjunction with:
Power Acoustik PTID-8970NRB 7-Inch In-Dash Widescreen TFT/LCD Monitor with DVD
The reason I'm writing this is because I scoured the 'net looking for reviews on this unit to give me piece of mind. Well I'm glad I took the plunge. It's $200 extra, but well worth it. It's well programmed, you won't have a problem switching from a Garmin or a TomTom. It finds the satellites a lot quicker than my Garmin too, and I assume (though I don't have many tall buildings or mountains around me that it will hold on signal better there as well. And I have the antenna buried behind my glovebox. I imagine if I gave it more prominent positioning, the signal would be even better. The maps seem to be better than my garmin: it has less unnamed streets in my experience. And the fact that it's built into your dash and you don't have to sucker it onto your windshield is great. I'm really interested if anyone knows about software updates for it (just because I'm geeky that way). The website it points to doesn't seem to exist. You can quickly switch between your nav screen and your audio screens. You can continue listening to your source audio while in the nav screen and you can continue to get audio nav directions when off of the nav screen.
Added: and with my PTID-8970 it plays the audio from whatever source just fine while in nav mode.

Qstarz BT-Q1000eX Professional BT Data Logger GPS (Lap Timing Analysis, Beeper, Vibration Sensor, 5Hz, 400,000 waypoints) Review

Qstarz BT-Q1000eX Professional BT Data Logger GPS (Lap Timing Analysis, Beeper, Vibration Sensor, 5Hz, 400,000 waypoints)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This GPS data logger works great for the price as a motorcycle lap timer with the added bonus of GPS location info allowing analysis of any part of the track such as corner speed and location at 0.2 second intervals. However, it would be nice if it logged at 10Hz versus 5Hz. With GPS accuracy of 6-9 feet I don't know if it would really give you much better information as far as track location on the width of the track but would give you more information on speed through the corners as even at 60 mph you are traveling 88 feet per second and so at 5Hz you are only getting points every 17.6 feet. 10 Hz would bring the data points inline with the accuracy of current GPS systems with a recorded point approx. every 8.8 feet when traveling at 60 mph. You must download the data to a computer and use the companies Qsports software with lap analysis function enabled to view data since no local LCD screen controls etc..., but if Qstarz added these would definitely raise the costs which at the current price is a great deal and why I decided to purchase. A couple recommendations I have for using the gps data logger as a lap timer are to not select the check box to remove drift points when importing data from the device, I have not been able to determine from the literature what removing drift points actually does, but has messed up some data. The other recommendation I have is to download/import data from the device to the computer after each session on the track and delete the data stored on the device after successful import. The time for import is not as long and it ensures your sessions are kept as separate data files.

USA SPEC PA12-BMW - iPod in-vehicle interface adapter Review

USA SPEC PA12-BMW - iPod in-vehicle interface adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this on my MINI. It works well and takes the place of the CD player. You use the buttons on the radio to access play lists on your IPOD.
I love being able to use the radio controls on the steering wheel to control the volume and select songs on the IPOD. It also allows me to use the IPOD in the normal way to select songs.
So what is the down side? After a period of use- it varies from 3 hours to 10 hours- the IPOD locks up. I do a soft restart of the IPOD and sometimes this will fix things. However, twice I have had to remove power to the USA SPEC- that is not just turn the car off but disconnect the power lead coming to the interface. That fixes things but is kind of a pain.
In case you are wondering, the text does not display on my radio. It just says CD1, CD2, etc. I thought text display might mean the name of the song playing might appear or at least the name of the playlist. But not so on my 2003 MINI.
So I like this unit overall, but if you want an install and forget it solution I can tell you there might be some frustration. I wonder if it is programmed by the same guys at that big computer software company.

Boss BV9996B In-Dash 7" DVD/MP3/CD Widescreen Receiver with USB, SD Card, Bluetooth and Front Panel AUX Input (Detachable Front Panel) Review

I have lived with this unit for about 6 months or so now. and all I can say is avoid Boss like a plague! The touchscreen gets washed out by any sunlight (yes even with tinted windows). The display has many gremlins, sometimes when you first cut on the car you get a blue and white lines across the whole screen that can only be cured by cutting the car off and then back on, no just cutting off the radio or closing and reopening the screen wont work. Then when it does work just drive down the road on a hot day, then the screen turns orange or red, all you see are numbers but no words.
Ok, now the remote! big and thin with buttons that are all spaced apart the same. You cant reference any point on the remote so that you can use it without looking at it. You have to look first before you take off and then keep your finger at your reference point which for me was the volume, from there you could go up for forwarding the cd to the next track. The remote by itself will make you wish you had looked and thought about this purchase more.
The Sound, well I was able to get the music to sound good, but ReeeeeeeeReeeeeer to the beat of the excellerator had me digging for problems for the whole time I had the unit installed. The unit is just plain cheap with terrible noise filters, I finally solved the problem with a new deck from a more reputable company (ends with wood). Oh and dont let me forget when you turned off the cd player you could hear crosstalk from the radio, when you turned it all the way down you could hear the radio along with the whining screeeeeereeeeee noises.
Outputs, well the sub only had one RCA output that caused problems with my multi amp setup. i had to make one output lead over to 2 amps, by the time the signal split 4 ways there was nothing left but low out put, high noise. it sounded like trash. The front and rear had seperate left and right outputs so they where ok.
The interface, using this monstrosity on a daily basis wasnt that bad not a deal breaker but the fact that most cd controls are done on the touchscreen that didnt light up properly made it impossible to use on most days.
Bottom line is that if you dont have money for better now then blowing a couple of hundred on this thing is only gonna set you back further from a real radio! Don't waste you time or your money. My lower cost non dvd unit from a better brand (ends with wood), blew this away within one minute of install. The unit from the reputable company didn't have the noise, did have the dual sub out puts that let my amps get what they needed to vibrate my car agian. Now I can turn down the volume all the way and guess what I get? nothing! no noise, no radio talk show, no reeeeee!
Dont do Boss!
I've been installing my own gear since 1977, I have one four channel amp running front and rear, two 2 channel amps running one sub each. With this radio I had to add a cross over since they didnt build one into the deck. I have 5600 peak watts conservatively speaking i would call it 110 rms to the fronts and rears and about 500 rms from each sub amp bridged. yesterday with the boss i was ashamed to show my friends, tomorrow with the wood I'll be ridin down on'em HARD!

I bought this deck about 2 weeks or so ago and i couldn't be happier with it.. The EQ is just amazing in it because it has more presets then my other dual came with, but my only problem with it is that the screen is a little to bright for night driving... And with the screen down it is a little to bright, but other then that it is the best bang for the buck i have seen for a while now concidering the fact that i saved over HALF the money i would have spent in the store...
So if you are looking for a radio that looks good and performs i would buy this one, and if you are going to install this yourself dont be intimidated by all of the wires that it has i installed this by myself in my driveway in about 2.5-3hrs or so due to the fact that the sun going down and needing stuff from the house... So altogether it was a pretty simple install just about anybody with a basic understanding of wireing can do... That or do it like i did and connect the wires one by one so that you don't get them crossed...

Not too bad. If you're in the market for a dvd player than this isn't a bad purchase for $300. Not as fancy as the others but it does the job. Has rca outputs for everything minus subwoofer. That isn't too important unless you plan on competing in audio. I have this wired up in my envoy and really like it as do my kids. Screen is bright enough. The usb input is awesome, allowing you to play music files recorded to things like mp3 players and flash drives. Overall a great dvd player if you don't need the name brand.

Clarion VZ300 3.5" In-Dash DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver Review

Clarion VZ300 3.5 In-Dash DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The two main features I use in the car work great: the radio and the AUX in line (for streaming Pandora from my phone). I haven't had a chance to try out the USB input yet, but I did try the DVD functionality and it works great too, although it does require the use of the remote for navigation. Here are my thoughts so far:
PROS
* Great sound
* Easy changing of audio settings
* Nice large display for displaying radio settings while playing the radio
* DIM function cycles through three settings great for day, night, and off
* Installation instructions were easy enough for me to follow
* Detailed instruction on how to connect hand brake wire (although the kit doesn't appear to include the right sensor)
* Lots of audio options: AUX in and DVD worked without any problems
* UPDATE: USB music plays fast with little delay
* UPDATE: USB music picks up right where it left off when you turn power on
CONS
* Lots of wires which make for a difficult installation into a standard stereo space
* DVD control requires use of the remote
* Display does nothing when in AUX mode (a screensaver or something would have been nice, not sure if that's legal though)
* UPDATE: Turning on power button in the dark is a guess game
* UPDATE: Navigation of USB music using remote is not intuitive (i.e. I have to read the manual)
* UPDATE: Received a USB Bad after leaving stereo off overnight
The installation for me went pretty smoothly. As mentioned above, the plethera of wires made sliding the stereo into place a pain. In order to get it to work, I had to pull out the DIN below the stereo and guide the wires down into the space below. Overall, I thought the installation instructions were good. They had the three most important items which are a step to remind you to disconnect the negative from the car battery, a diagram of the overall way the stereo is installed into a dash, and a wiring diagram. With those three I was able to do a standard installation (i.e. four speakers and the radio antenna) without any issues. By the way, this stereo was the first stereo I've ever installed.
By the way, another reviewer mentioned the audio would stop when they went into the settings. That may be true for USB audio or CD/DVD playback, but for radio and AUX in, the audio kept playing no matter what I did unless I hit the power button to mute.
UPDATE: USB functionality works great. You plug in a drive and it starts at the first song it finds. When you turn the power off and back on, it picks right up at the last part of the song you were listening to when powering off the stereo. I did receive a USB Bad error when turning the car on this morning, unplugging and replugging the USB in fixed the issue and it picked up at the last song it was playing. I haven't figured out all the details on navigating through the songs just yet, but with the remote it looks like you can search via artist, album, song title, etc. As the driver though, I'm expecting I won't be able to do much better than using the forward and reverse buttons (and the preview seek button) to navigate the music. Because of that, I grabbed some old 512 MB and 1 GB drives which I'm putting together different "mixes" that I can update at will and plug in as my mood changes.

This enhances safety by automatically displaying a live picture of what's behind you on VZ300's LCD screen whenever you shift into reverse, enabling you to avoid hitting objects even if they're not clearly visible in the rear-view mirror.
24-bit D/A Converter for Superb Sound Reproduction Fully enjoy the sonic impact of DVD movie soundtracks or music videos. 24-bit technology actually oversamples the digital signal, providing excellent results that just weren't possible with older 16-bit systems.
Built-in Low-Pass Filter For optimal subwoofer performance, Clarion equips its VZ300 with a built-in Low-Pass Filter. Offering users selectable frequencies at 50Hz, 80z, and 120Hz, Clarion's Low-Pass Filter stops mid- and high-range frequencies from entering the subwoofer output. This allows users to really dial in the bass so it hits harder and tighter.
XM Radio Compatible In addition to the many sources that can be connected to the VZ300, you can be connected with XM Radio. The VZ300 can be connected to the XM Direct 2 tuner for hours of entertainment.
6ch/2V RCA Output with Subwoofer Control With 3 sets of RCA outputs, you are free to add external power amplifiers to create a more powerful, sophisticated audio system. Also, independent volume control is enabled for the subwoofer so you can adjust the level of bass output to your liking at any time, regardless of the output level of the other channels.

Power Acoustik PTID-8940NBT 7-Inch Widescreen Touch-Screen In-Dash Monitor with Bluetooth Review

Power Acoustik PTID-8940NBT 7-Inch Widescreen Touch-Screen In-Dash Monitor with Bluetooth

Ordered this unit as a gift for my girlfriend. After spending a couple of hours installing the unit, I found out it was defective. Overall, the unit was very cheaply made. I had to squeeze the battery compartment on the remote for the remote to work.
After the frustrating experience of figuring out why the motorized screen wouldn't open up (I had to remove to screws from the top of the unit, which was not in the instructions), I was very disappointed with the visual quality of the menu screens.
From what I could tell, the sound was very clean. Radio recepetion worked well. I didn't get to try out any of the other features, because I could not get the touch screen to respond to any touch. The unit remained frozen on the calibration screen. After an hour or so of trying different methods to get the touchscreen to work, I removed the unit and packed it back up.
The instructions were very difficult to understand due to poor translation from whatever language they were originally written in. I am now in the process of returning the unit to Amazon, and I will update this review when the process is complete. I am getting a refund and will try to order a unit from a different company. This is my first experience with Power Acoustik, and I will not order anything made by them in the future.

I bought the Dual DVDN9131 at Wal-mart on 1-23-10. Today is 3-6-10 and I just shipped it back to Dual to be fixed or replaced. The unit worked fine when I first installed it, but now when I try to use the blue tooth to make phone calls people cannot understand what I am saying. My voice is Garbled like I am talking under water or something. I contacted Dual customer support and they told me to ship it back for repair or replace. I don't know what to expect from here, I have never owned any Dual products before. This radio seems to be a nice unit, I just hope they take care of the problem in a timley manner.

Don't let the other reviewers 3 stars scare you. For the price this player is nice. I had a double din that went bad after 8 months so I decided to go with a flip out. I almost went with the Clarion that's going for just over $300 on here but I had to have the sd slot. Speaking of which, I cant vouch for the full sized SD because I only use micro sd and the full sized adapter, but it works. It will also accept usb sdhc cards. Stuck my 8gig in and it recognized fine. Yes it plays avi movies perfectly. The screen did get stuck once on my usb drive when it was folding in. When u stick the usb in u have to make sure the rubber tab that covers the usb port on the dvd drive is moved over so it doesnt stick on top of ur thumb drive, or simply take it off. The manual is in English. I dont detect the Chinese translation the other guy did. The close button is actually a back space button and it does mention that in the manual. I understand how he may have mised that. U can push the open button to close it again or just use the remote. Its got a great picture definitely better than my last dvd player. The sound is nice, depending on ur system I suppose. Only thing that kinda bugs me is that u have to take the dvd out to mess with the video settings such as contrast and brightness. All in all i give it a 4 to 4 and a half review, but I couldn't make it a half star when I tried. Besides the other guy rated it too low at 3 stars. If u are on a budget grab this. You wont be disappointed

Dual XDVD8183N DVD Receiver with 7-Inch Touch Screen LCD, Built-In Bluetooth, and iPod Control(iPod Cable NOT included) Review

Got this item last month and it rocks, can't beat value & reliability for price. I do have a few little gripes.
Good:
This is a decent head unit with very good interface, screen clarity and DVD playback. Sound quality was very good considering I have no amp and I liked that sound options could be configured. I read reviews on other sites before buying and as advertised most of the functions worked. I was able to play DVDs, MP3 CDs, and regular CDs. The bluetooth worked ok for audio transfer (with Nokia 6230 & Blackberry Pearl), and handsfree mic sounded ok on receiving end. I like the piano black with brushed chrome look and feel. I did not install the backup camera, and did not get the tv tuner unit in time for the install, but the aux-in port works fine.
Gripes:
I haven't gotten the ipod interface to work yet though - i currently have an Ipod nano (3rd gen). The Dual logo displays on the ipod, but the head unit keeps saying "connecting..." I think it may be a compatibility issue with the nano firmware version. Will check this out, but I can use the 3.5mm in jack as an alternative, and the nano does get charged using the ipod jack connection. I had to use a by-pass for the parkbrake - had a little trouble at first, but resolved this. Would have liked this unit to come with Divx and have more functionallity with the bluetooth - does not read call address book on blackberry pearl correctly. Tends to get warm quickly.
Overall:
This unit was professionally installed in a '04 "Corolla". Installation was quick and almost pain free (by-pass to parking brake took some time - I do not live in a state with video restrictions). I would recommend this unit to any one. Its a good sturdy unit with lots of features, and I could not find another unit at lower price vs reliability concerns.

Play back your favorite DVDs and CDs, burn MP3/WMA files to disc for hours of music, or just listen to the radio. Set up an in-car surround system with the 5.1 channel RCA outputs, and send video to rear monitors with a pair of video outs. Options abound, and your wallet will thank you as much as your passengers.

Seven-Inch Touchscreen Monitor The XDVD8183N features a motorized, seven-inch touchscreen TFT LCD monitor with 480 x 234 pixel resolution, for great looking video and ease of navigation. When not in use, the screen folds back into the receiver seamlessly, with a smaller blue/white dot matrix secondary display to pick up the slack.
Bluetooth-Enabled The XDVD8183N features built-in Bluetooth technology, which communicates with most Bluetooth-enabled phones. A built-in microphone for hands-free operation. Answer and place calls via the unit's touchscreen, along with one-touch dialing from the phone book, and on-screen caller ID.
Enjoy Your Media Play back your favorite DVDs and CDs (including burnt DVD-R/RWs, DVD+R/RWs, CD-R/RWs) in the disc player, with full access to disc menus, subtitles, zoom mode, angles, etc.
You can also burn your favorite MP3/WMA music files to CD/DVD for hours of music on a single disc.
AM/FM Tuner Tune into your favorite radio programming with the AM/FM radio, complete with 48 Station presets for instant access to your stations.
iPlug Interface Cable (Purchase Separately) The iPlug cable uses a 3.5mm headphone jack to connect your digital music player to the receiver using RCA inputs. It's a breakout aux input, essentially, allowing you to connect your iPod, MP3 player, or other device for enjoyment in your vehicle.
Serious Sound The built-in 50 x 4 MOSFET amplifier provides efficient performance and great fidelity. Dial in the audio further with standard bass/treble and balance/fader controls.
5.1-Channel Audio Outputs With 50 x 4 Watts, the XDVD8183N delivers plenty of high-quality sound, but if you want to get a serious mobile entertainment center going, it offers full 5.1 channel RCA audio outputs: a pair of front outputs, a pair of rear, center channel, and subwoofer.
Audio/Video In/Out Connect a game system, camera, or other source using the A/V input, and send the signal to additional monitors in your vehicle with two separate composite video outs.
Rear Camera Input An RCA rear camera input is provided. Connect a compatible camera and enjoy the convenience and safety of backing up with added visual input.
Remote Included A full-featured Infrared remote control is provided.

Boss BV9997BI In-Dash 7" DVD/MP3/CD/iPod Widescreen Receiver with USB, SD Card, Bluetooth and Front Panel AUX Input (Detachable Front Panel) Review

I purchased this to replace an old Radio in my 95 Jeep GC. Space is very limited in the radio compartment. The BOSS BV9997BI MultiMedia player comes with a wad of wires, hard wired into the radio back that also has two large wiring connector cubes. To fit all this in, plus the radio wiring adapter and IPOD cable, entensive cutting had to be done to the Jeep radio area. The radio comes with a cable for an IPOD that must be stuck into the back of the radio, rather than having an outlet on the face of the radio. If you will be installing a backup camera, purchase it and do it during the initial BOSS install, or you will have to remove the radio again. The 7" display is very good, but if you retract it and attempt to use the display on the faceplate, it is extremely dim to the extent it is totally inadequate viewing in the daylight. It can also be a function that the lettering and background are both light colors and the text is very thin. It is easy to read at night, in the dark, and actually could use a dimmer, but has none.
The common on/off as part of the volume switch does not work with the BOSS. Rather, you have to press and hold a SOURCE button for that function. Attempting to insert a CD or DVD does not automatically select the function to play it. You must first select the media by pressing and releasing the SOURCE button. Original CDs with painted-on labels work fine, but I inserted some CDs with press-on labels and had difficulty getting them to eject. There appears to be too close a tolerance in the mechanism to accomodate labeled CDs without problems. (Letting the BOSS cool down allowed me to extract the CD's.) Adjusting the channel balance could be made easier by adding a joystick-like button to the faceplate. Manually adjusting the balance with the touchscreen is a challenge and definitely not for use while on the go. Faceplate adjusting is even worse. The detachable front panel only detatches the buttons in the lower faceplate. It is held on by two small, fragile looking pieces of plastic that I hope don't break off.
Not all functions are on the faceplate. Some can only be accessed using the remote control. So don't misplace or forget to take the remote. The instruction manual is extremely poor, missing explanations for highlighted, numbered functions and having clear explanations. BOSS really should employ someone with native English skills to write and edit their manuals.
Although the concept of incorporating all the latest bells and whistles into a unit is great, BOSS falls short in making the package easy and working well. I will pursue purchasing an extra remote and frontpanel, in case they break or are lost. I cannot recommend this to others. I also wonder if BOSS's other flip-out players don't suffer from the same problems, since most seem to be design and documentation problems.
