USA SPEC PA12-BMW - iPod in-vehicle interface adapter Review

USA SPEC PA12-BMW - iPod in-vehicle interface adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this on my MINI. It works well and takes the place of the CD player. You use the buttons on the radio to access play lists on your IPOD.
I love being able to use the radio controls on the steering wheel to control the volume and select songs on the IPOD. It also allows me to use the IPOD in the normal way to select songs.
So what is the down side? After a period of use- it varies from 3 hours to 10 hours- the IPOD locks up. I do a soft restart of the IPOD and sometimes this will fix things. However, twice I have had to remove power to the USA SPEC- that is not just turn the car off but disconnect the power lead coming to the interface. That fixes things but is kind of a pain.
In case you are wondering, the text does not display on my radio. It just says CD1, CD2, etc. I thought text display might mean the name of the song playing might appear or at least the name of the playlist. But not so on my 2003 MINI.
So I like this unit overall, but if you want an install and forget it solution I can tell you there might be some frustration. I wonder if it is programmed by the same guys at that big computer software company.

RCA ViSYS 2-line Corded/Cordless Expandable System with Digital Answering System (25255RE2) Review

Average Reviews:

I usually don't write reviews but I had to for this purchase as there aren't many reviews for this really great phone. I've spent a great deal of time researching 2-line phones and all the various features for my small business. I even tried a few of the big brand name phones before I ended up with this one. I tried the Panasonic DECT 6.0 2-line comparable phone, which has no caller ID when you're on one line and another call comes in. Then I tried the Uniden DECT 6.0 2-line comparable phone, which has awful sound quality and a piercing echo sound when you speak into the phone. I was apprehensive about this RCA phone since there weren't any reviews but tried it anyway because of all the features. I'm so glad I did -- it's the best phone I've tried and/or read about so far.
Pros:
Set up was easy
DND/privacy (rare to find this on a 2-line phone)
Caller ID - easy to access and see (with the panasonic you had to hit 3 buttons to access)
Call waiting
2 line voice mail
wireless headset that's so comfortable! -- BIG BONUS! easy setup & use, comfortable
Great sound quality and range
Looks great - sleek and solid, not cheap feeling/looking
Base and cordless phone both have speakerphone
Mute
Hold (rare to find this on a 2-line phone)
Transfer/intercom calls
Cons:
The maximum volume on the wireless/bluetooth headset could be a little louder though this is just a personal preference -- it's actually loud enough but I have construction going on in my building so it would be great if it was a bit louder.
Another small nuance is that you have to use the base phone to dial out when using the headset (wished you could use the cordless phone to dial). Minor inconvenience.
The only comparable multi-line phone that has all the rich features of a true office phone would cost thousands of dollars and I wasn't willing to spend that much for a small office. This is a great phone and the price is simply a bonus.

If you're thinking about buying this headset for jogging/running, you definitely want to check out my review. There's a design flaw with the non-adjustable back band that makes these headphones crap to wear while running.

Ear Force DPX21 PS3 Headset and 5.1/7.1 Channel Dolby Surround Sound Review

Ear Force DPX21 PS3 Headset and 5.1/7.1 Channel Dolby Surround Sound
Average Reviews:

This pair of headphones has a truly spectacular frequency response range. Despite the fact these are headphones, you will FEEL the bass reverberating between your ears! The fact that these work with pretty much any audio source you'll run across from stereo analog input to digital fiber optic is pretty sweet.
I've owned many headphones. Be it from cheap stereo to "pseudo-surround", such as the Plantronics Gamecom (pseudo-surround) and I even have a pair of the mid-line SHURE headphones (they have reasonable bass response), this pair will blow them away.
Sound is crisp in the mid/high range as well. For the price, you certainly won't be dissappointed! If you're a SHURE headphone fan, these will really impress you.
The only downside to these are the MASSIVE amount of cables that accompany them. It's not that there's many, it's just that they're really LONG (which is GREAT in most cases!)... Just remember you're going to have to bundle them if you're going to use them on your PC (as I do) so they aren't strewn across your entire desk.
Overall, best headphone purchase I've made to date. Turtle Beach really knows their audio!

Sony Ericsson HBHDS980 Stereo Bluetooth Headset Review

Sony Ericsson HBHDS980 Stereo Bluetooth Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Small flaws tarnish this great product. I used this with a SE Z750 debranded and loaded with updated firmware from SE.
Edit: I just discovered that my SE Z750 charger (wall or car charger), charges this BT device! YAY! I only need ONE charger with me when I travel. Other posts elsewhere show that this is the same for other SE phone models, you can use the same SE charger with the device!
First point. Sony doesn't consider this device to be a BT Handsfree (even if they included the profile) they consider this unit 'music wireless speakers' or 'wireless stereo.'
Bluetooth profiles are:
Headset
Handsfree
Audio Streaming
Audio Remote Controller
Audio Remote Control
Target
Background:
Well, I've always hated those Borg-like (or Uhuru-ish) ear clips for Bluetooth. They scream-- I'm so important that I must be connected all the time... Another problem with them is that it's very hard to tell WHO it is on the other end. And why would you want to put a RF device in your ear (not that I'm saying its harmful, but...). And then you have to pull them out to listen in Stereo to your music or podcast or if you have the service, the audio stream of your cell's TV/Video cast.
Sony has come very close to solving these issues with the HBH-DS980. This Bluetooth stereo device will allow you listen to a music/sound source while keeping you connected to your phone for calls. It could be the same device or it could be a different device. As I write this I'm listening to iTunes on my laptop (networked iTunes library) and connected to my cell phone.
The unit has a lightweight forefinger length control unit that hangs off of a neck string, so that you can pop the ear buds out and still wear the device, ear buds dangling. The length of the ear bud's cords can be adjusted so you won't have big loops of wire hanging. The entire thing could be tucked into a shirt pocket as you wear it, if you don't want it dangling and people will assume you have some sort of mini-player in your pocket. There is a 'safety release' in the connectors that hold the ear bud wires if someone (small child?) pulls on the unit.
The extra feature that makes this better than some other units is that the display is full featured and goes beyond just a few icons to twenty pictograms plus text for caller id and music track information. Normally invisible the display on an incoming call it lights up with the caller id information. So now, you can accept/reject the call if you wish. Either press the 'call button' on the microphone bulge that hangs closer to your jaw line and the unit will pickup the call, and blank out the music automatically. Reject the call by holding the button down. A mellow beep or the phone's ringtone can announce the call and a beep tells you that the rejection went through. You can interrupt the music to make a call also by pressing the Call button.
The OLED on the unit will also display the ID information of the track you're listening to - provided your Bluetooth sending device supports that information which is NOT available as just a stereo headset. It must support the more advanced headset profile A2DP or Audio Gateway. Along with a volume graph (different settings for music and cell phones allowed), time, battery power, the devices that you are sync'd to, and were sync'd to in the past. However, the OLED is not bright enough for direct sunlight - small flaw.
The 980 is also a remote control device. It has a dedicated Menu button that allows you to view the `Contacts List', `Call List' and `Device List' (and back up a level when using these lists). Using the rocker volume bar allows you to highlight these items and the Play/Stop button is also the 'Select' in this function. This works fine when your phone is the primary device. Sometimes the unit when connected to the laptop (in my case) disconnects from the phone. The call/contact list icons show, but as the phone is not primary there is nothing to display. Holding down the on/off button or the Call/Talk button will resync you to the primary device (more later). But you may not realize that you are disconnected. Another small flaw. The manual says that you can easily transfer any call in progress on your phone to the headset by `pressing the Call button' which may be a SE phone feature.
Besides the manual method to either retrieve a recent call or dial one from your contact list (contact list is divided into alphabet; select a letter and scroll through listings with multiple numbers listed for each contact as they scroll by and can be selected with the Play/Stop button); you can also use voice dialing if your phone supports it. (Voice dialing on your phone will NOT negate the need to use the call button. Some phones support 'Call Control' by saying 'answer' or 'busy' and never have to move your hands. Magic Word (turn on the phone's voice command) and Voice Call Control however, doesn't appear to work with the unit, as it will not leave the microphone open all the time as it's a battery drainer. In my configuration, I could only press the Call button and then my phone would beep (in my ear) for the voice number that I recorded for each number. The OLED shows a dialog balloon pictograph as it waits for the voice command. This could be a problem for some but, magic word is a battery drainer for your phone. It would be highly recommended that you use the device to RECORD the voice commands for better matching.
The Device List will also to allow you to connect to the additional devices. Select the previously paired device from the list and press the Play/Stop button and the `reconnecting Bluetooth' display will show. Adding a new device requires that the 980 be turned off, and then holding the on button until the `search for devices' pictogram shows. The unit supports auto-pairing, and if you're connecting device doesn't-- the pair code is the expected `0000'. Reconnecting or adding a device paired previously is done by the list and pressing the Play button until a reconnect icon appears. A problem exists where your phone and the unit will not always agree on what is connected all the time. Your phone might say it's not, and the unit may say that it is. Selecting a device that the 980 already thinks is connected won't show the `reconnecting' display. Either turning the unit on and off will resync the primary device or pressing the call button will resync, but you'll have to reselect the secondary devices.
The unit can handle 'call waiting' by using the Call button as a flash button.
Headphones
Three different sized sets of silicon buds are supplied to give a good fit, you should be able to wash with soap and water. I found the headphones clear and bright sounding. 192bps media sounded very very good playing from my phone.
As an audio control:
I mentioned before that it can hold an independent volume setting for music vs. voice calls. The unit has independent Play/Stop, volume +/- rocker, Menu buttons and a skip/back slider. When connected to my SE phone; the Play buttons will startup or the media player at the last song in your playlist. You can scroll through the current playlist but you can not change playlists.
Also, the data for the music id on the unit is dependent on the software being used on the player and the Bluetooth profile being used. Right now, I don't have a Bluetooth profile beyond 'Headset (aka earphones and mic)' and stereo headset on the Bluetooth on my PC. So I am not seeing music information on the 980's display. The PC's `Audio Gateway' profile which `should' be valid is not working on the 980 and won't recognize it as a service beyond just headphones (but the Next/Previous buttons do work). My phone has a more sophisticated profile and it shows the data. I can however, go to the next/previous item in the current playlists on both my phone and iTunes.
Additional features:
Unit makes beeping noise and will (on my phone's display anyway) show `Battery Low on Headset" message. Really low battery will just shut the unit down; I got an hour of music playing after the first low battery message.
I think the proprietary charger connection is a plus. There is no question that the unit is correctly connected and the prong snaps into the units body. OLED lights up with animated charge pictogram.
Additional flaw: time display is 24hr there doesn't seem to be way to change it. My phone is set to 12hr AM/PM.
It would have been a big plus to be able to use your own headsets but then the mic would have to be in the unit, and that would have to be near your head.
Replacement silicon buds are 3 sets for $5 at some online sellers. Plus $5 shipping.
I hope that there is a firmware upgrade for this unit, the small flaws can add up to be annoyances for some, and it should all be `correctable' SE might update the firmware, they do for their phones.
Edit: I spoke with SE about some issues with the device, they don't expect to have a firmware update. One issue not mentioned is that the unit's display goes 'nuts' once in a while, and looks like static. Functionality is still there, you don't have a readable display. A full reset will correct this, it's described in the manual, shut off, hold call and menu buttons down together, and turn on, device will reset and correct it.
Also, you can setup your bluetooth profile in the phone to auto-answer calls without pressing the call/mic button.
My SE phone switches profiles when it detects that the 980 is in range automatically and transfers audio to the phone.

The keyboard is really high quality, the mouse and remote quality is decent. I have not experienced any lag in typing like the previous reviewer. I am going to do a video review for my blog once I get a little time.

SuperTooth Disco High Power Bluetooth Stereo Speaker (Black) Review

SuperTooth Disco High Power Bluetooth Stereo Speaker (Black)
Average Reviews:

Bought this after looking at a number of other bluetooth speakers. Tried the Jambox at the Apple store - junk sound for the money!! The Zeppelin is great but bigger and more money than I wanted to spend.
This speaker is powerful, really powerful - a little bit of distortion when you really crank it up but otherwise very good sound. It paired to my iPhone quickly with no hassle - you can even use the pause, forward and back buttons as well with not only your ipod but with Pandora. Also has a bass boost but found it unnecessary as it has a bass port in back that works good.
Has a nicely designed carrying case made of neoprene as well. Highly recommended. Oh, not sure what the difference is between this and the BlueAnt version, but they look identical and this once is $60 cheaper.

Motorola Milestone XT720 Unlocked Cell Phone. 1700/2100MHZ for Tmobile 3G. 8MP Camera with Xenon flash.
Average Reviews:

Although the listing mentions this phone for use on T-Mobile, I was unable to get it to access internet via their network, even after much searching for settings and so forth. That being said, once I went overseas, I found this phone quite easy to set-up and use. The quality of photos produced by the 8MP camera is quite amazing and I manage to get some quite decent shots despite the inherent limitations of a compact camera. I do find it rather annoying how long it takes to wait before I can take the next shot, however, and find myself frequently pressing the camera button several times to force it to hurry up.
The GPS works quite quickly and I have had no trouble getting an accurate signal in either the UK or NZ. There are 3 apps on the phone for this - Maps, Motonav and Navigation, but I am only able to get the Maps app to work for me. Motonav requires a Motonav SD Card of some sort (must be available in Europe). Navigation is actually Google Maps Navigation and is not available in every area I have checked.
Call quality is quite good with this phone and I have had no dropped calls whatsoever. When the phone is on vibrate mode, however, I can't set it up to vibrate for any text messages, so bear that in mind if you do a lot of texting. Ringtones are somewhat small in choice but I think you can download more. The alarm does work with sound even in vibrate or silent mode, which is an improvement over other phones I've had.
The internet browser works well. There is an Email app on the phone which I found super annoying when setting up my Yahoo! Mail account. Instead, use the Yahoo! Mail app, and of course you'll need a Gmail account for this phone anyway. The Email app does work well for my Mobile Me email, however. Contacts and Calendar are fine to work with, and the screen is pretty responsive and accurate, although occasionally it enters the wrong character from an adjacent key if I'm going too quickly. As others have mentioned, the responsive vibration when you touch the screen is quite a neat feature and very gratifying.
My only other complaints are that the home screens seem to have problems with placing and organizing widgets - it seems like there's enough space, yet sometimes I am unable to put one more icon on my main screen. The world clock widget I downloaded for free is not as nice or user-friendly as the iPhone clock feature (having recently switched from a 3G model). My Sign is quite a neat feature. So far, I have not tried the radio or any voice commands, so cannot comment on those.
Finally, this is one of the newer phones and ships with Android 2.1, which was a big factor in my not going for something else with 1.6, as I have read reports from others that this makes a big difference. In conclusion, if I was remaining in the USA only, I would really need to do more homework on seeing if I could get internet access with the darn thing - admittedly I was experimenting with a prepaid T-Mobile SIM, and their on-account plans may be a different story. This model is apparently sold by one cell phone provider in the USA, so it is possible, just a matter of getting the right settings and working with a company that will support your unlocked phone adequately.
This phone is packed with many features and pretty nifty HD video capabilities, plus is easy to use and feels solid in the hand. An excellent all-around choice provided you ensure you can access internet via your mobile network provider (otherwise you'd be stuck to just wifi access).

WFT%2DE4 IIA Wireless File Transmitter %28WFT%29 for EOS 5D Mark II Review

WFT%2DE4 IIA Wireless File Transmitter %28WFT%29 for EOS 5D Mark II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The WFT-E4 II A has two primary functions:
1) WiFi Connectivity to transmit photos to a computer during a photo shoot.
Secondary to this is the ability to control the camera via WiFi. See OnOne DSLR Camera Remote to see how this is done via an iPhone.
2) GPS connectivity for geocoding location data into photos.
My interest in the WFT-E4 II A is 80% GPS, 20% WiFi. Disclaimer: I just received my WFT-E4 II A and 5D Mk II. I have not yet made any photos or even mounted a lens. But owing to the pathetic state of documentation available from Canon and on the internet about this device, I thought I should post a preliminary review.
My interest in geocoding photos arises from the fact that I do architectural photography all across North America for Satterwhite Log Homes. GPS location information is an essential part of my photo shoots because log homes are built out in the country, away from the highway, up in the mountains, around the far side of a lake, out in the middle of the farm, over hill and dale.
Let's address a GPS issue that can be confusing: track logging vs.real-time capture.
For many people, track logging is the way to go, and it is certainly much, much less expensive than the WFT-E4 II A. For $125 or so, track loggers simply record location information on a separate device. This procedure is not without problems: a) clocks must be synchronized between camera and logging device before photography begins, and 2) all images must be post-processed after the shoot to embed location information from the track logger into the image file. For track logging, there is no need to purchase the WFT-E4 II A.
Real-time GPS logging captures location data and embeds it into the image file at the moment the image is exposed. If it were done right, there would be very little prep, and no post processing workflow afterwards. The Canon 5D Mk II is not capable capable of real-time GPS without add-on purchase of the WFT-E4 II A.
For me, a track logging solution is not practical. It is too cumbersome and too exposed to human failings. It requires too much effort in a post processing step with special software on the computer. It does not fit my workflow, where I may be on the road two or three weeks at a time -- these hours are precious, and I need to be shooting, not munging data in a hotel room. And data logging is simply a waste of time - double trouble, twice the work for something that should be completed and done each time the shutter is released. In short, I despise GPS data logging because it makes me the servant of the machine, instead of engineering the machine to serve me.
The 5D Mk II is a breakthrough camera capable of stunning results, phenomenal technology and an incredible price. True virtuoso engineering.
Not so the WFT-E4 II A, all the more disappointing because this is a second generation, revised device.
I rated the WFT-E4 II A two stars because Canon's engineers simply have not caught the vision of GPS. This is a serious indictment: a) they did not built GPS into the 5D Mk II or any other EOS camera (or any point and shoot, for that matter, unlike Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony... not to mention the iPhone). b) Canon does not include Bluetooth in the camera body, c) Canon neglected to allow GPS data input through the existing USB port on the camera body, d) The USB on the WFT-E4 II A will accept GPS data. So GPS can be accomplished on the 5D Mk II, but only at the expense of about $1,000 for the WFT-E4 II A and an external GPS unit.
You might say, for Canon, GPS is an afterthought to an afterthought. Meaning they neglected to include it in the base camera, and the particulars of implementation on the WFT-E4 II A are dismal.
OK - besides heaping grief on Canon for their nearly non-existent GPS capabilities, I want this review to provide information for people like myself who must forge ahead given these gross limitations.
First - BLUETOOTH. Canon says the WFT-E4 II A is bluetooth capable. To do so requires purchase of a separate USB bluetooth dongle that Canon designed and markets for their line of inkjet printers. This adds insult to injury, to consider that the expensive WFT-E4 II A add-on, required to enable the 5D Mk II for GPS, must itself have an extra cost add-on to enable connectivity. However, I use this stuff professionally, and at some level, I don't mind spending extra to get the job done. BAD NEWS. Bluetooth on the WFT-E4 II A is completely kludgy. I was hoping against hope that the bluetooth dongle would fit inside the WFT-E4 II A body. NO, NOT THE CASE. Brilliant Canon engineering shows its sad limits here -- the Bluetooth adapter is plugged into the WFT-E4 II A external USB socket, hanging out the left side of the device in a rigid fashion like a USB thumb drive stuck on the side. This is completely ignorant and sure to be snapped off by your left hand moving to support the lens or focus, or by a camera strap snagging the dongle. I'm trying to think of the nicest thing I can think of to say... the word STUPID is the best I can do.
Which means, for all practical purposes, the WFT-E4 II A must be used as a wired device for GPS acquisition. Which means a separate klunky GPS receiver. And none of this is thought through -- Garmin nor anyone else has ever considered a GPS hot shoe mount. They also don't have a camera strap mount for the GPS - belt holsters assume a horizontal strap. And a USB cable plugged into the side of the WFT-E4 II A is almost as bad as a Bluetooth dongle. Not to mention I will have to find some way to wear an external GPS on the camera strap or on my person, cabled to the camera, and likely swinging on a lanyard smacking me and beating up the camera. Even if you can devise a way to mount the GPS on the hot shoe (I did on my last camera, and it is an ugly, ugly solution), just try to find a USB cable less than 6' long. All you can do is wrap the cable round and round something, usually the hotshoe foot, and try to keep the thick ball of wire out of the way of the viewfinder.
What a joke! There is nothing tolerable about this. Much as I love this camera, GPS design deficiencies mean pain and suffering every single day of my life with this camera.
I hope somebody from Canon reads this. You don't want to talk to me in person what I really think -- I've kept my comments here civil.
But I will say this is pathetic performance from a company I really like (I've been shooting Canon pro cameras since I was 15 years old -- bought my first Canon F1 about 35 years ago). Your professional level cameras should have built-in GPS capabilities equal to an Apple iPhone, period.
If you must rely on an external device, and there may be reasons to do so, even if GPS is built into the camera (not unlike built-in vs. external flash), then your camera should have rock solid built-in Bluetooth to eliminate wired connections in the field. Further, you need to specify positional accuracy for any internal GPS and specific recommended external solutions. This can be critical, depending on the application. For instance, I am involved with an historical project to document cemeteries. Not just cemeteries, but actual burials within cemeteries. This is not amateur tourist photos to indicate position in the vicinity of the Grand Canyon, but locations of unmarked graves with an accuracy within the footprint of a casket, or perhaps an urn interment. Exacting accuracy is another reason track loggers don't work for me.
Who knows what other applications exist for this technology? Certainly real estate, which I am a variant. Crime scene photography? Accident investigations? Travel...
What is not in doubt is Canon has been clueless about capture of positional location metadata up until this point.

The seller is ok, the delivery was fast, the content is as adverstised, BUT. This earhook is a poor match to my Jawbone ICON. Although one of the three earhook sizes in the package does fit it and can be put on, it sort of makes the earphone stick out so the earphone can't lay flat and stay pressed to my cheek which is necessary for better voice transmission. Tried to bend the earhook, doesn't help. Unfortunately, I will have to again order the original Jawbone ICON earloop which is way more expensive ($10 plus delivery for just one earloop, I'm not interested in their earplugs.)
Do not buy this if you need it for Jawbone ICON.
