HTC Magic Android Google 2 Unlocked SmartPhone--International Version with NoU.S. Warranty (Black) Review

I'm an Apple guy. Always have been. I'm writing this on a MacBook Pro connected to an AirPort. I have an iPod, an Apple coffee mug, t-shirts from the various Macworld Expos I've attended, and even an Apple sticker on my car. So when it came time for me to join the 21st century and get my first "smart" phone, naturally I chose ... an HTC myTouch for T-Mobile.
Come again?
Okay, I've had iPhone envy for years now and have been spending my recent lunch hours playing with the new iPhone 3GS at the Apple Store in the mall connected to my office. I really like it, but I've been a happy T-Mobile customer for years now, since they were VoiceStream, and was reluctant to change carriers, especially with all the bad press about AT&T's coverage. (Apparently, there are so many iPhone users using their iPhones so much that the system can't handle the traffic, resulting in slow or no 3G connections and poor or non-existent call quality.) So the other day I stopped in at my local Radio Shack and found that they had the myTouch. None of them were "live," so the saleswoman let me pop my sim card into a brand new black one and play with it for a while. After she told me I could return the phone, without penalty, within 30 days if I didn't like it, I figured, why not? So I left the store with that new black myTouch in my pocket.
First impressions? It's a beautiful little phone. The screen is bright and colorful and I get a good connection to the internet and my e-mail. Calls are clear and strong, as always, and there are lots of free apps from the Android Market. The myTouch works seamlessly with my .Mac account, as well as my Gmail account, and everything is automatically synched between the phone and my Google calendar and contacts. I was a little concerned about no iTunes access, but there's a great free program called Double Twist that allows me to easily copy all of my content -- songs, photos, video, and more -- from my computer to the phone, so it's like having iTunes on the phone. Overall, it's a lot like an iPhone, only the T-Mobile service is cheaper than AT&T, and from all the complaints I've heard and read about, it's also more reliable.
Other reviewers have complained about the speed of e-mail, but my e-mails -- Gmail and my .Mac mail -- are very fast. I have the phone set to check every 5 minutes and have no lag at all. As for the keyboard, it's not that bad, but you can download the free HTC keyboard or buy the Better Keyboard or TouchPal, all of which work better -- problem solved.
So, at the end of 30 days, what am I going to do? The Apple-loving side of me would still like an iPhone, but there really isn't any need for one, given that the myTouch does just about everything the iPhone does, and it does it for less, and more reliably to boot. The iPhone undoubtedly has more available apps, but the Android Market already has thousands, most of which I couldn't care less about. Many more are sure to come. As much of an Apple fan as I am, I'm having a hard time justifying the extra cost of the AT&T service, particularly given all of the problems they're having. (I have lots of friends with iPhones and they all love it, but concede that it drops calls all the time, and that the call quality isn't that great. Call me old-fashioned, but I think a phone -- "smart" or not -- should be able to handle calls first and foremost.) And because the myTouch is still new, there aren't that many floating around yet, whereas the iPhone is now ubiquitous; even my 10 year old daughter's friend has one!
So, while I've only had it a couple weeks, I'm very impressed with the myTouch and think I'll be keeping it.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen--U.S. Version with Warranty (White) Review

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen--U.S. Version with Warranty (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
The unit is dead simple to get started with. Took my simcard from my ATT locked phone and dropped it in, and I was ready to go within a minute of opening the box.
The "Symbian S60v5" OS is quite advanced and has features that the iPhone doesn't have.
- multitasking: you can stream Last.FM and chat on IM (try using Pandora and AOL on the iPhone)
- theme/skinning without hacking the phone
- tethering without jailbreaking the phone
- Flash for web content (not full Flash 10, so no Hulu, but YouTube works).
- You can get apps from other places than the App Store (more like the Mac than the iPhone). Just download the .sisx file, and it installs.
Coming from a locked AT&T phone, the biggest benefit is the lack of crapware - no hardware shortcuts to "MeDiAnEt" and when you click on music, it doesn't prompt you to buy ringtones from AT&T. I'll never go back to carrier-subsidized phones.
Cons:
Battery is small - it'll last a full day of moderately heavy use (calls, email, web, music), but expect to plug it in every night.
Nokia's Ovi Store is not nearly as advanced as Apple's iTunes Store yet.
- Ovi Music is not available in the US
- Apps are rarely found in the App Store, because most developers would rather you download it from them directly (like Mac, not iPhone).
The phone update process is not as intuitive as the iPhone process - Small updates can be done from the device itself, but larger updates need a Windows PC (I used VMWare Fusion on my Mac)
The included micro-USB cord is quite short.
Up to you:
The device doesn't have battery-hungry things like 3G or GPS. If these are things that you need, look at the bigger brother - the 5800.

Sony Ericsson W880i Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 MP Camera, 3G, MP3/Video Player, Memory Stick Pro Duo Slot--International Version with No Warranty (Steel Silver) Review

Sony Ericsson W880i Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 MP Camera, 3G, MP3/Video Player, Memory Stick Pro Duo Slot--International Version with No Warranty (Steel Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Provided that you're not into PDAs and if you can do without an FM Radio, Sony Ericsson W880i is more than enough meet your savvy. Its stylish design and seemingly incomparable range of features all in a compact phone, would please any gadget fan, music afficionado or even fashionista. This phone is all that and a whole lot more.
Packed with the Walkman 2.0 software and a 1 Gig Memory Stick Micro M2, you can just imagine the amount of music you can store with this phone. The firmware supports up to an 8 Gig expansion should the M2 be available in that capacity already in the future. This phone also supports A2DP Bluetooth Stereo headset profile which means this is completely compatible with any device like the Sony Ericsson A2DP Bluetooth Stereo receiver (MBR-100) or the Sony DR-BT30Q Bluetooth Stereo headset which I prefer to use with it.
Other than that just like it's predecessors, it comes with 2.0 Megapixel camera. This should be sufficient for day to day use although should you opt for a camera phone with a higher resolution, this phone is not for you.
The screen resolution is a compact version of the W900 series so the display is really crisp and clear. The screen resolution is higher than the W800i or even the W810i.
Only setback might be for people with big hands. The keypad would not be appropriate for them. This phone would be very difficult for them to use.
Lastly, this phone comes with 3G and a VGA camera for video calls. The last feature not only seals the sweet deal, but you would never find another phone out there in such a compact state with all these features which can literally fit in your left shirt pocket.

The Sony Ericsson W800 and W810 were huge hits. Now, here comes another sequel, this time thinner and better than ever, the W880i. All the same great Walkman features are here, along with robust phone functions, but now you get a super-slim .40-inch form factor encased in stainless steel, Walkman 2.0 software, support for up to 900 music tracks, 3G UMTS capability, and more. Other features include a 2.0-megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom, an M2 Memory Stick card slot, Bluetooth, push email, an Access NetFront Web browser, a speakerphone, Macromedia Flash Lite 2.0 for interactive user experiences with video, audio, and graphics, and more. Simply put, this baby's loaded.
DesignThe W880i follows a long tradition of beautifully designed and crafted phones from Sony Ericsson. The same candy-bar style that graced the W800 is here, as is the horizontally-oriented camera unit on the back of the phone, allowing you to hold the phone just as you would a camera when you're taking pictures. The W880i's screen sports 240 x 320 pixel resolution with support for over 262,000 colors. Quick access buttons below the screen make it easy to control the phone's Walkman music features, while a five-way center button controls most of the phone's menus and features. The W880i contains 16 MB of embedded memory, but as mentioned, an M2 Memory Stick slot is provided, giving you storage capacities of 2 GB and beyond. USB and Bluetooth data connectivity is provided, and the phone supports USB mass storage so you can simply plug the phone into your computer and drag and drop files into the phone's memory using the included Disc2Phone PC application.
Calling FeaturesThe W880i's phone book can hold up to 1000 contacts with multiple entries per contact. A call list remembers your most recent missed, received, and dialed calls. The phone's voice activated dialing makes calling your contacts as easy as saying their names, while the built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are included and you can also use MP3 and AAC music files as ringtones. A cool application called Music DJ even lets you mix your own ringtones. Meanwhile, picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. For those times you want to keep things discreet, there's a vibrate ringer mode. And because the W880i is Bluetooth-enabled, you can use a variety of headsets and handsfree kits for total wireless freedom when you're on the go.
And because the W880i is 3G enabled, you can use it as a video phone. During a video call, you can see a live video stream of the person you're talking to and they can see you. The third generation of mobile networks brings the convenience of broadband Internet to your mobile phone. Fast data transfer speeds--up to 384 kbps--give you quick and easy access to a new world of video calls, audio and video streaming, Web surfing, multimedia messaging, and email wherever you go.
Messaging, Internet, and ToolsIf you're looking for a mobile productivity partner, the W880i has you covered. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, and sound via MMS messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging possibilities. The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. Push email is also supported, allowing you to have instant email on your mobile phone, just like on your home computer. Messages are sent directly to your phone as soon as they arrive. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
The W880i also supports RSS feeds, allowing you to use your phone to view up-to-the-minute news and other content from selected Web sites and blogs. Just subscribe to the feed and let it come to you.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the W880i, as it supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the high speed 3G UMTS data protocol. When used with your carrier data plan and the phone's Bluetooth or USB data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the W880i, including a voice memo recorder, a to-do list, a calculator, a calendar, and an alarm clock. The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard, which lets you synchronize your PC-based calendar, contacts, notes and tasks with your W880i.
As mentioned before, because the W880i is 3G enabled, giving you a whole new world of media possibilities. Your 3G phone has an "always on" Internet connection with high-speed data transfer. This gives you a fuller mobile Internet experience, making it practical to access large files or use complex remote services, no matter where you are. On 3G networks, the W880i can double as a media player for streaming movie trailers, the latest sports news, music videos, and more. Choose the news and entertainment you want, and have it delivered straight to your mobile phone.
Imaging and Entertainment The W880i is a Walkman phone, and that means it offers a great mobile music experience. Load up your favorite songs in MP3 or AAC format on a memory card and listen to your heart's content. The user-friendly Walkman 2.0 music player application also includes a "Music Mode" that shuts down the phone functions so you can listen on an airplane or anytime you don't want to accept calls. Meanwhile, Digital Mega Bass and stereo widening combine to enhance your listening experience.
And don't forget about that powerful 2.0-megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom. Finally, you can get consistently great shots that rival the quality of a dedicated digital camera. The camera can capture video, too. Dedicated camera controls on the side of the unit will make you forget you're holding a phone in your hand. There's even an included application called Video DJ that allows you to edit video footage right on your phone. Make it look great with advanced editing options before uploading footage to your blog.
And what about gaming? This phone is definitely geared for the mobile fun fanatic, as it supports widescreen and 3D games. The W880i comes preloaded with several games and more are downloadable from Sony Ericsson.
Vital Statistics The Sony Ericsson W880i weighs 2.50 ounces and measures 4.0 x 1.80 x .40 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 6.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 425 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 900/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS and 2100 UMTS frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Pros:
battery performance

3G modem included into main body
silence of work (no internal fan)
design and quality- body shell and keyboard
Cons
expensive
GPS performance ( I cannot come to terms with it- shame!)
basic software only
overall perfomrance not the best in class (not relevant- unless you buy netbok for games)

Nokia 5610 Xpress Music Red Quadband Unlocked Phone
This is my first phone with enough memory for my own personal music. I've had it now for three months and had only one minor issue and that was a software problem that could have resulted from a conflict with something I downloaded not guaranteed for this phone (Bluetooth related issue). Still under warranty, I simply tripped in to the nearest Nokia shop and it was fixed in no time with a software update for free.
Expandable memory allows you to horde up to 4g of A/V files or attach the headphone/antenna and tune in your favorite FM! Not crazy about the headphones, but you can plug your preferred into the jack. Has all the basics, calendar, calculator, etc that I was looking for. Also came pre-installed with Opera and it's not too shabby a browser considering the screen size. Buttons are smaller than what I'm used to but I've mostly used clam-shells up until now.
So far, I've been quite satisfied and recommend this versatile phone/entertainment package.
UPDATE: 02/22/2009 Ten months later and still very satisfied with this excellent phone! Still very happy about this purchase and it still doesn't show the usual wear-n-tear attributes liked rubbed off keypad! Love it!

Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition Unlocked Phone with Free Voice Navigation and Nokia Navigation Accessory Kit--U.S. Version with Full Warranty Review

Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition Unlocked Phone with Free Voice Navigation and Nokia Navigation Accessory Kit--U.S. Version with Full Warranty
Average Reviews:

Update on 5/8/2010:
-------------------
It's been a couple of months since I bought this phone. Finally, I've updated the firmware and some software, so I'd like to give a quick update / review on the new changes, because some of the things I mentioned before are no longer accurate.
- Firmware v40.2.005 is great. It's just a slight improvement but good nonetheless. One can update the firmware either through over-the-air (ie. 3G / WIFI) or from a PC. I'd prefer to use Nokia Ovi Suite on a PC to update the firmware because you can backup all your settings / contacts / data. Although updating the firmware is relatively safe, you'd want to do a backup just to be sure.
- Ovi Maps v3.03 is a nice improvement. The interface is about the same. The biggest change is you can download voice guidance that speak street names during navigation. With this update, it really depends on one's usage to think if this phone can replace a dedicated GPS unit. It's getting harder to say now.
- Nokia Email Messaging is Nokia's way of doing Push email. It works pretty well with GMail / Hotmail / Yahoo and I'd assume it works with other email service providers too. It basically syncs all the contents in each email accounts (up to 10). The updated client displays HTML contents which is a significant improvement.
Many new phones (especially Android phones) have come out in the last couple of months. I still think this phone still proposes excellent values with its price and features. Most of all, it's unlocked, and it can be used anywhere in the world, even without a SIM card.
The phone's user interface remains its Achilles' heel, however. As long as the user finds the phone hard to use, it really doesn't matter if the phone has the best price / features / performance in the market. Most users are using this phone to be more than just a phone. It's a smartphone because the phone is smart, not because it expects a smart user to use the phone.
Original Review:
----------------
I'll try to keep it short. I'll give the phone 5 stars without hesitiation. Others have provided very good (or bad reviews) of this phone, and mostly they are right-on. The key about this phone is you need to know why you want this phone, and how this phone suit your needs. Do not have an unreasonable expectation. The strength of this phone is its cost vs. feature proposition. In my opinion, there's simply not a phone out there that provides such a rich feature set while costs < $250.
If you want to buy an iphone (and pay ~$1000 total - $200 for the phone + $720 for 2-year data plan @ $30/month), don't buy this phone. Buy the iphone instead. This phone is not an iphone, not an iphone killer, and not an iphone replacement.
If you want to buy a Garmin GPS, don't buy this phone. Buy a Garmin GPS instead. This is not a GPS replacement.
If you want to buy a good quality digital camera, don't buy this phone. Buy a Canon or Nikon. This is not a digital camera replacement.
If you want to buy a FM radio, don't buy this phone. But who needs a FM radio anyways.
If you want to buy a music player, actually this phone's music feature is really nice.
With the above being said, buy this phone if you want an excellent phone AND want to do all of the above without carry all of the above gadgets at the same time. In particular you want:
- a phone that is unlocked, quad-band (international use), no contract, no $30 data-plan, no $10 GPS navigation plan and costs ~$250
- a phone that has strong signal, excellent call quality, and long battery life
- a phone that can play music/video/games, browse the internet, check email, take pictures/videos, provide GPS turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation (North America only) and maps service (global map is free download), provide VOIP video calls (using the 2nd camera in the front) over WIFI (fring and nimbuzz apps are free download) EVEN WITHOUT a sim card (excellent for travel)
Some tips while using this phone:
- the touch screen is a resisitive touch screen (unlike iphone's capacitive touch screen). Do not use your "finger tip" to control the touch screen. Use your "finger nail" or the included stylus instead. Personally I like "finger nail" much better. Once you get used to this, everything is a breeze. If your "finger nail" is as sharp (or unsharp) as the included stylus, it will not scratch the screen.
- the user interface takes a while to get used to. The iphone user inteface is more superb (and it's not even close, so I'll give credit where credit is due.) However, the Nokia 5800 features are excellent and there are plenty of supported (and unofficially supported) apps to download. No need to download itunes. No need to wait for Apple certified apps. Basically, you can download whatever you want and do whatever you want with this phone (e.g. use it as a USB storage device), and that's why it's not an iphone.
- speaking of iphone interface - there's a PAID (for money) app out there that you can buy and install iphone-like user interface onto your Nokia 5800. Get that app if you really need the iphone user interface. Just google "Nokia 5800 myphone app" and you will find the link and reviews.
- use the GPS without data plan (and do not get charged for data usage) by going to
settings -> phone -> app. settings -> positioning -> positioning methods and check only "Internal GPS".
The GPS without data plan may take up 5 mins (or more) to acquire a lock. The GPS signal is weaker than a dedicated GPS unit, and the voice navigation does not speak street names. That's why it's not a GPS replacement, but a GPS capable phone that you can use while a dedicated GPS unit is not available.
- browse the internet and check email using WIFI. Make sure you don't get charged for extra data usage by going to
settings -> connectivity -> destinations -> Internet (or MMS or WAP) -> "Your service provider" and make sure "use access point" is set to "after confirmation".
It's annoying that you will keep getting asked if you allow internet connection, but you'll get the peace of mind that you'll never accidentally connect to the cellular data network.
- visit Chinese (Traditional or Simplified) / Japanese / Korean websites by downloading "Opera Mobile with Asian Language Support" (not the regular Opera Mobile, not Opera Mini). Just google it and you will find the link.
- take pictures / videos while outdoor and with good lighting. Poor picture / videos quality is expected for any camera phone when taking them indoor with poor lighting. The phone flash does not help. That's why it's not a digital camera replacement, but a phone with camera that can use during social outings (e.g. Facebook Mobile upload).
Some nice to have (but not required) for this phone:
- get a data-plan if your service provider has a cheap alternative compared to the standard $30 smartphone data-plan. Being able to browse the internet and check email anywhere without WIFI is very convenient. Plus, the GPS / maps include additional features like traffic, weather, additional point-of-interests update that require a data-plan. More plus, with data-plan, you can turn on A-GPS (assisted GPS), which allows the GPS to acquire a lock in less than 30 seconds and to maintain a much stronger GPS signal throughout.
And most of all enjoy your phone while you are sitting somewhere nice, like a coffee shop. People, do everyone a favor - DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE (TALK OR TEXT) while driving.
Hope my review helps.

No Hidden Costs The new version of Ovi Maps comes with all the maps and high-end, car grade navigation features you need for free and is yours to keep for the life of the smartphone. No additional licenses needed for extra countries, regions or services like traffic information or city guides. Data charges from network operators may apply.

Voice Guidance and Traffic Information Turn-by-turn, voice guided navigation comes free for both drivers and pedestrians. For drivers this includes lane assistance, traffic information, safety camera, and speed warnings. For pedestrians, this includes shortcuts through parks and pedestrian-only zones for over 100 cities around the world as well as 6,000 3D landmarks in over 200 cities to help you find exactly where you are.

Unique Hybrid Technology Ovi Maps is built on an advanced technology called hybrid vector maps. Vector maps are high quality but less data intensive and allow you to continue to navigate even if you lose your network connection. This means that maps downloaded or updated across a network connection are about half the size of bulky bitmaps used by other mobile map providers. The hybrid technology ensures that, unlike other providers, any downloaded map data is stored on the device for future use.

No Network Connection Required When Navigating Avoid expensive, battery-draining network connections with Nokia's unique hybrid technology. Maps can be pre-loaded on to your Nokia smartphone so you can set Ovi Maps to offline mode, saving battery power, and the navigation system will still work. This is particularly useful for those worried about data connection costs when travelling abroad or when you are travelling through areas with little or no network coverage.

Best Global Coverage You take your mobile with you wherever you go in the world so, as standard, voice guided navigation for both pedestrians and drivers is available for 74 countries in 46 different languages and there are maps for over 180 countries. This gives you the best maps with the largest global coverage for free.

I purchased this product from amazon about 5 months ago. It shipped promptly and arrived in perfect condition. I give this phone a 4 for the features. It's great being able to upload any of my favorite songs to use as ring tones and I love that it came with both head phones, the micro SD AND the appropriate usb hook up. The camera is also amazing, After uploading the photos you can hardly tell that they were taken with a cell phone.
My only gripe (and reason for giving a 4 not a 5) is the craftsman ship. Internally the phone is sturdy. It has a great speaker awesome sound quality and user friendly software. It's jut the outside that can't stand wear and tear (especially if you tend to drop things). I've dropped it twice and on the second time it fell face down and the front slide bar cracked (and partially fell off). That feature of the phone still works but the aesthetic is damaged. I had a feeling that it would happen. Protruding parts on the front of phones always end up damaged sooner or later, I wish the company had considered that.

Prior to purchasing this, I had a Dension ice>Link which worked well for a while until I restarted the my car. To restore functionality, I had to pull a fuse out and plug it back in. I did this several times until eventually, it just died on me.
The USA Spec Adapter however gave me no such problems. It's very stable and works exactly as advertised. Installation in my 2005 Accord LX was fairly easy. The toughest part was plugging the socket under the radio without removing the cubby hole -- it's possible but you need small hands.
This is an excellent purchase. I'd recommend this product to anyone.

Voyager - Quad Band Touchscreen Dual-SIM WiFi Media Cellphone Review

Voyager - Quad Band Touchscreen Dual-SIM WiFi Media Cellphone
Average Reviews:

At first I thought, no reviews, hmmm but then the phone sounded good and it looked good so I bought it. Well, it is exactly as you see and read it and it is worth it. I wanted to wait until I used it for over a month before reviewing. I have had no surprises. It takes getting used to if you are not a touch-screen person. I thought that it did not come with a stylus but it does. The secret is to pull out the antenna (all the way) and voila. Once you calibrate the pen, fingertips (big or small) or pen works like a charm. The phone responds well.
I love the size of the screen and the style of the phone. Very classy. It is easy to navigate and easy to unlock the screen. The dual SIM is why I really wanted a new phone and I have had absolutely no problems with it. Wi-fi is easy to set up. I set up my hidden network within seconds. The TV works very well. I was able to pick up channels quite clearly and in colour on vacation. The camera is not as clear as I thought it would be but I am not complaining. Texting is a breeze with the qwerty keyboard. The calculator is so straight-forward. More importantly it is easy to get to your contacts from both SIMs from any App view. Moving between the SIMs is like using a normal SIM phone.
My only problem is that shipping took long. They did not offer any other choices, only 17-19 bus. days. Maybe I was too anxious to get it. In any case, customer feedback was good and quite helpful. All in all, I am quite happy with my phone as I continue to explore its many features. I basically wanted a good touch screen, dual SIM phone with Wi-fi and I got lots, lots more.

comes with a chinese wall plug and US adaptor.
this allows you to plug into a US wall outlet, but my personal experience is it will not provide right voltage to charge device. Therefore this product i purchased will not work in the USA.
also important to know the nokia6210 3G works on 900/2100 frequency, EURO standard. Voice and EDGE will work because the device is quadband, which would be enough for me.
but know that usa at&t 3G service operates on 850/1900

Where do I start? From the moment that I laid my eyes on Sony Ericsson's C702, I was taken! The C702 has everything and more than any of the other most sophisticated cell phones can have! It has GPS and A-GPS capabilities, a great 3.2 MP picture camera, video-recording camera, lighting for both camera modes, GPS-based navigator, Bluetooth capabilities, micro memory card slot, GSM and 3G capabilities, water resistant shell, anti-slip back cover, e-mail, MMS, text, digital radio, MP3 player, and so much more! One of the features that I really like is the ability to connect to the Internet from a computer through the C702 and its included Sony Ericsson PC Suite software. I couldn't have wished for a better cell phone! Don't believe everything bad that people say about this cell phone. Judge for yourself, if you dare!

Bought this phone yesterday (not from Amazon).
Amazing little device with a lot of innovative features. For example, the phone notifies the user of failure to connect to a WiFi network by crashing and rebooting. A dialog box pops up after the reboot to tell me that the phone restarted to "improve performance." Same thing happened when I tried to scan in a friend's business card, tried to fetch my email, take a photo, sync by bluetooth... the list continues. In fact, in just one day the phone restarted itself to 'improve performance' so many times, the performance must be getting really great by now.
Maybe a firmware update will help? Downloaded the Sony Ericsson Update Service (2.6.4.9). Ran it on my XP box at work - once installed, it played a Sony Ericsson eyecatch animation, then crashed with a 'java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException', but at least it kept planing the eyecatch over and over. Ahhhh. Tried it on my XP box at home - this time the installer came up with an empty window which stayed empty. No luck there. Finally tried it on an old Windows 200 laptop - this time it worked, recognised the phone, downloaded about 150M of something from the internet, pretended to flash the phone with new firmware. The result - same firmware, and more 'improving performance' messages.
The bottom line is - it is a very promising device. The hardware is good, the software is not even a public beta quality - proof of concept prototype at best. Not ready for public consumption in any shape or form. This seems to be a trend among smartphone manufacturers - release the product once the hardware is finished, promise to finish the software in new firmware releases, stop releasing firmware updates as a superseding model is in the works - leaving the consumer with a kind of working device. Sort of. Sometimes.

Meanwhile, the phone's touchscreen navigation is intuitive, allowing you to tap any function icon on the P990i desktop to open an application.

You can also use the P990i as a modem to provide an Internet connection to your laptop or PDA via Bluetooth or USB. As mentioned, Wi-Fi connectivity means that you can tap into wireless hotspots for fast Web browsing.
When it comes to important tools, the Symbian operating system has you covered. Easily edit documents you receive as attachments to emails, or that you have stored on memory card. Or use other tools, such as the alarm clock, a stopwatch, task and notes applications, a sound recorder, a and a file manager. As mentioned, fully-functional contacts and calendar applications are included, and they can be easily synchronized with other devices and services. You can also save time by using the handy business card scanner.

Nokia E63-2 Unlocked Phone with 2 MP Camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, Media Player, and MicroSD Slot--U.S. Version with Warranty (Ruby Red)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
*Great screen resolution
*Awesome keyboard, very easy to type. Much better than the Blackberry Curve. Similar to the BOLD.
*Phone reception is very good no issues at all. I think I get a stronger 3G signal than my IPhone 3G
*As far as Data I use this phone with WI-FI only, and it has a great inbuilt tool that always asks which way you want to connect to the net. I can also set certain applications to use WI-FI by default so I done have to worry about accidentally using the data service. The WI-FI connectivity is great.
*Web browser is one of the best I have used. The IPhone browser is obviously better because of the screen size and the touch user interface. But the S60 browser is far better than the windows mobile or blackberry browsers. It even executes flash pages, YouTube mobile and many other flash oriented website.
*The email capabilities are amazing, Very easy to set up. I was able to access exchange email (via push) and Gmail without any issues at all. Nokia has some sort of trial email application [...] which works amazing well. I am able to use Gmail with push capability. That's something even the IPhone can't do yet. However this service is in beta and may be costly down the road. It rendered HTML emails perfectly.
*Attachments were easy to open and view. However quick office requires a 19.00 update to open the new MS Office 2007 file formats.
*I use Google for calendaring and contacts. Thanks to Google enabling Microsoft ActiveSync technology for its calendar and contacts applications I am able to sync real time. [...]
*As far listening to music the phone works quite well. It is obviously not even close to the I-Phone. If media is your primary requirement this particular model will be slightly disappointing. However I was able to transfer play list from I-tunes to the Nokia Music Desktop software and Sync the play lists with the phone [...] . The external speakers on the phone produce a crisp sound, better than the external speakers of the IPhone but not as good as the Blackberry Bold. Via headphones the sound was quite good. I was able to browse the music by play list, Artist, Album etc. I would say the music playback capability was as good as the blackberries with media Sync.
*I have not tried the video playback capabilities.
*The camera on the phone is quite adequate, and it has a flash that is amazingly bright. Be sure not flash someone in the eye as its blinding at a close range. I was able to take pictures and email as attachments and MMS them to my contacts without any issues. I felt the picture quality was as good as the IPhone. With the added bonus of a flash. The Video capability was decent and worked well. Nothing to write home about, but a cool feature to have.
*Files on OVI. Yes it is possible to install a desktop application called Files on OVI and access desktop files via the phone. It works well and setup was a breeze. Cool feature to have. But I did notice my desktop acting slightly slow and decided to uninstall it. But this is most likely a unique issue related to my desktop.
*The battery life was better than average no issues at all with heavy use. Three times better than the IPhone 3G
*It has an App store which is interesting and shows a lot of potential. I found many useful apps for free. (Nibmuzz, Bloomberg etc)
Cons:
*The lack of the side volume toggle is annoying. Mostly when trying to adjust the volume while listing to music and when trying to turn off the ringer when the phone is in the pocket.
*The User Interface is a little dated and does not feel very user friendly. The menu system is extensive but a little annoying at times as it requires multiple clicks to get simple things done.
*No USB data cable, memory card or out of the box compatibility for MS Office 2007 files formats. These upgrades cost me $46.00 (8GB Micro SDHC). This is a great phone for the price. I am a smart phone power user and have used Blackberries, IPhone and Windows mobile. I love what this phone can do out of the box. It is really a little gem. I would highly recommend this phone to anyone who does not want to sign or extend their contracts and does not need IPod like media capabilities. The lack of a volume toggle is not a deal breaker in my books. The rubberized plastic exterior is great and has a slight grip to it. I can't imagine how uncomfortable the Nokia E71 must feel in the hand with its metal exterior. Metal sounds cool and fancy but its slippery and gets cold. Hope this review helps!!
07/01/2010
The phone is still working well. However I think I may need to buy a new battery for it. I also downloaded the official skype app from [...] on to the phone. I am able to use skype just as I would on my iPhone 3G. Please keep in mind that I don't think the Nokia e63 is in anyway better than the iPhone 3G. It just so happens that I have both phones at the moment and I am able to review them side by side.
I was also able to use [...] and stream iTunes playlist from my desktop to my Nokia e63. < On your Orb PC, click Start > Run* type regedit (Disclaimer: Use the Registry Editor at your own risk) > In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Orb Networks\Orb\Config doubleclick on "app.iTunes.enabled" > In the pop up change the Value data to "true" > Close the Registry Editor > Restart Orb > Now login again to view the itunes playlists on the UI.>

Designed for people who need to manage their business and personal lives equally well, the Nokia E63 is a more affordable sibling of the popular E71 mobile phone and it includes many of the same features, but in a plastic case rather than metal. With the E63, you'll be able to easily stay on top of your email inbox with a full QWERTY keyboard and support for corporate communication via Microsoft Exchange. It's ready to run on 3G networks in the U.S. (850/1900 MHz UMTS), enabling fast downloads and streaming multimedia while on the go.
It includes integrated Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g) for accessing open networks at work, at home, and on the road, as well as connecting to Voice over IP (VoIP) internet telephony services. Other features include a 2-megapixel camera/camcorder, Bluetooth for handsfree devices and stereo music streaming, MicroSD memory expansion (up to 8 GB), built-in Nokia Maps application, 3.5mm headset jack, and up to 10.5 hours of talk time on standard GSM networks.

Unlocked PhoneThis unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850/900/1800/1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider. This phone comes with a full manufacturer's warranty.

Additionally, this version of the E63 (E63-2) can be paired with 850/1900 MHz UMTS 3G networks in the United States. When paired with a compatible 3G network, you'll enjoy a high-speed connection offering a variety of feature-rich wireless services--from data connectivity to your office to multimedia streaming, and take advantage of simultaneous voice and data services. In areas in the U.S. not served by a 3G network, or in foreign territories, you'll continue to receive data service via EDGE network (depending on network compatibility).

Phone Features As stylish as it is functional, the Nokia E63 sports a 2.4-inch LCD screen with 320 x 240-pixel resolution and support for 16 million colors. The full QWERTY keyboard makes it easy to compose and respond to email with just one hand. It features intelligent input with auto-completion, auto-correction, and learning capability for fast and error-free typing. The Nokia E63 also has the ability to switch modes with a single key press--switching from a view of corporate email, appointments, and intranet data, to a personal mode with a picture of friends, personal email, and shortcuts to favorite hobby blogs or websites. This phone has a 110 MB internal memory, which can be expanded via optional MicroSD memory cards (up to 8 GB in size).

The Nokia E63 comes fully equipped for easy-to-install and easy-to-use professional and personal email. People who use Microsoft Exchange at work can access their email using the Mail for Exchange mobile email client, which comes pre-loaded. You'll enjoy reliable real-time access to your email, calendar, contacts, and tasks, and be able to download attachments in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF files directly to the device.

The Nokia E63 also supports email accounts from more than a thousand Internet service providers (ISPs) around the world, as well as Gmail, Yahoo! mail, and Hotmail. Additionally, it supports the Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email solution, as well as third party email solutions like System Seven and Visto Mobile.

Hands-free communication is easy thanks to the integrated speakerphone. This phone also provides Bluetooth wireless connectivity (version 2.0), and includes profiles for the communication headset, handsfree car kits, and file transfer. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server (additional charges or subscription applicable).

The 2-megapixel camera (1600 x 1200-pixel maximum resolution) offers a wealth of features, including a digital zoom, LED flash, white balance modes, and a self timer. The phone can capture video clips up to 320 x 240 pixels (at 15 frames per second) at up to one hour in length, and it offers several adjustments including scene and white balance.

Take your media with you when you're out on the go. With the built-in RealPlayer software, you can stream and download your favorite content onto the phone and gain access to the latest news, sports, and entertainment updates. Or sync up with your PC and play the music and movies stored on your hard drive. It's compatible with a wide variety of digital audio formats (including MP3, AAC/AAC+/eAAC+, and WMA), so you can listen to your favorite radio programs via the integrated FM radio.

View web pages as they were originally intended with the integrated Nokia Web Browser, which enables you to zoom out to a full screen view of the entire page using the Mini Map feature. Find the section you want and then zoom in to the content you need. The text instantly adjusts to the size of your screen. I bought this handset for my wife and she's very happy with it. QWERTY keyboard is easy to use, the overall feeling of the phone is fantastic. Trackball is comfortable to use. We love HTC products and this one didn't let us down. Pictures are quite OK in quality, but shoot in good lighting conditions, this is not a kind of multimedia handset but a texting one. Inner circle feature is cool.
Lovely gadget, practical and without blows and whistles but it does what it supposed to do!
