LG KS360 Tri-band Cell Phone - Unlocked Review

LG KS360 Tri-band Cell Phone - Unlocked
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is phone is almost everything I wanted it to be.
Just to begin, I use AT&T and I actually get better signal now then I did with my old phone, which I bought from AT&T. I have five bars almost everywhere, including places where friends with AT&T have no signal.
It has a great fairly high resolution screen that rotates based on if the keyboard is out or not. The video quality is pretty good for a phone and the point-and-shoot camera actually produces very nice pictures. The "touchscreen" actually only functions if you're using it to dial a number when the keyboard is closed. It is by no means a significant control mechanism.
The software has a very clean look and is very easy to manage -- every feature is where you expect it to be. Also, it has many ways to instantly check messages or create a new text message. It also has a cool feature where is lines up your messages with the same person as though it were a chat, which makes it very easy to remember what they said last. However, using that line-up method, I've had a lot of trouble with it chopping off the ends of messages, but if you just use the regular view, it's not a problem. Also, referring to the software in general, I've had a number of instances when it froze temporarily -- annoying, but not common enough to really be a problem.
The phone itself looks great. I have mine in a somewhat chunky case, which really detracts from the way it looks, but without the case it's very sleek and gorgeous. Also, even though it's a slider with a full keyboard, it's very thin and light. The buttons on the front and the keyboard are a good size -- not so small you can't tell what you're doing, but not too big, either.
And the battery life seems to be really good. Off of one full charge, it stays alive for three or four days of regular talking and texting before it dies.
And just a heads up, the charger that I got was actually a European charger with an American adapter, which works just fine, but it makes the charger really bulky, so it's hard to plug in behind furniture. Also, my manual came in what I think is Romanian, but there are plenty of manuals available online, and the phone is so intuitive it wasn't really a problem.
Overall, I really like this phone, and I'm glad that I got it, even though there are definitely less expensive unlocked phones out there. Sure, it sometimes glitches on me, but it's never been anything severe. Overall, I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a durable, QWERTY keyboard phone.

Sony Ericsson C902i Cyber-shot Unlocked Cell Phone with 5 MP Camera, Media Player, International 3G, M2 Memory Slot--U.S. Version with No Warranty (Swift Black) Review

Sony Ericsson C902i Cyber-shot Unlocked Cell Phone with 5 MP Camera, Media Player, International 3G, M2 Memory Slot--U.S. Version with No Warranty (Swift Black)

I've been using this phone for about a month now on T-Mobile (upgraded from a RAZR) without any issues. Just stick the SIM card in and you're good to go. When I shopped around for a phone, I had a few requirements: candy-bar body, good camera, and mostly no hassle features for everything else. I don't text message very much, nor do I use my phone as an MP3 player.
Firstly, the phone's look and feel are superb. It feels solid in the hand and unnoticeable in the pocket. As mentioned in the specs, it is one of the thinnest phones out there, and the construction feels solid, with metal back plate. The sliding mechanism that shields the camera's lens feel a bit wobbly and flimsy, but has so far not deteriorated with heavy use. The screen is a little small, but bright and crisp, with perfect visibility under direct sunlight. Directional pad, as well as call/cancel, and context buttons are all where you expect them to be and provide just the right amount of tactile feedback when pressed. Be aware that this is a SMALL phone, and you will have trouble hitting these small buttons if you have large fingers. That said, the keypad itself leaves much to be desired. The keys themselves are arrayed at an angle, making it somewhat confusing as to which button you're going to end up pressing. Your eyes tell you one thing, but your fingers tell you another. The only that helps seems to be either dialing slowly and carefully or simply trying to ignore your fingers telling you what button it's over.
The highlight of this phone is undoubtedly the 5.0 MP camera. The lens is at the top of the camera and is shielded by a sliding bar at the top that is honestly quite slick. When you pull it out to activate camera mode, a blue led strip lights up breifly and fades away. This serves no practical function, but is cool nonetheless. Once in camera mode, touch-sensitive buttons light up along either side of the screen. Taking pictures is best done turning the camera horizontally and using the dedicated camera trigger on the top (depress half way to focus and fully to snap). Since this is still a camera phone, shutter speed and shot-to-shot still leave much to be desired. However, it is FAR better than the iphone. The digital viewfinder is somewhat misleading as it will freeze the frame when you depress the trigger. However, this frame will be replaced by a preview of the actual picture taken (which will often be more clear). As a cyber-shot camera, it has the standard features such as face-detection, auto-focus, burst mode, etc. The flash is weak at times, but adequete (just be careful because it will drain your battery). Typical shot-to-shot time is long on this phone, but I find that most of the time, pictures are clear on the first shot. If you are really paranoid, the burst-mode will take 9 pictures in the span of a second, and you can pick which ones you want to keep or discard. Under low light conditions, pictures will turn out grainy unless you use flash. Pictures taken with this camera will not rival dedicated point-and-shoot digital cameras, but it is leaps and bounds better than other cameraphones I've used. As a point of reference, I enjoy taking pictures wherever I go, and this is the only device I bring. Considering how light it is, and the fact that it's a phone, it is honestly a perfect combo device for casual photographers. The phone is also capable of capturing 30 fps video, which I have not really had the opportunity to play around with. The initial samples I took turned out grainy, but maintained a consistent framerate.
The phone comes with standard sony-ericsson software loaded onto the ~160 MB of internal memory. The software is quite intuitive and mimics the media browsing experience on the PSP and Playstation. The PC suite includes the abiltiy to sync music, outlook contacts and calendars, and other files. While a bit bloated, the PC suite does its job. A few issues I should mention: the phone does not seem to be able to sync media files via bluetooth. This is really a shame because being able to sync pictures wirelessly is a very handy feature. The memory is expandable using sony's proprietary memory stick technology (the micro variant), which comes in sizes up to 8GB. The phone has a proprietary connection jack that is used to charge, sync, and adapt to regular headphones. The basic headphones included with the phone are low quality and become uncomfortable to wear after only a few minutes. If you intend to use this device as an MP3 player, definately have a better set of headphones handy. As I mentioned before, the keypad is terrible, making this phone unuseable for extended texting and/or browsing.
Call quality is great, and I notice no difference in reception from my RAZR. Speakerphone volume is loud and the device works seamlessly with my hands free bluetooth headset. The included PC Suite also provides settings for using the phone as an internet connection for your bluetooth enabled laptop.
Bottom line, this phone will turn heads with its sexy design. If are you looking for a very slick and stylish candy-bar phone with a great built-in camera, look no further. If you lean toward emphasizing picture quality from your phone, you may want to wait for the next generation of 8.0 MP phones such as the C905. Just do not expect to text or browse effectively.

Need one gadget to do it all? The Motorola A1200 "Ming" phone is the answer. This Linux-powered PDA phone sports a 2-megapixel camera, a huge display, quad band support, plus all the bells and whistles you'd expect on a high-end handset, including Bluetooth, a music player, a document reader, and much more. And when you want to get down to business, there's even a business card reader for rapidly capturing contact info.
This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider. This phone comes with a one-year warranty from a third party provider.
Design The first thing you'll notice about the Ming is that its design is definitely groundbreaking. While the transparent cover might look cool, it also serves a purpose, as the phone's speaker is cleverly embedded in the cover. Flip the phone open and you're greeted by a huge 2.4-inch touchscreen that sports 240 x 320 resolution and support for 262,000 colors. There's also an included stylus so you can control the unit's onscreen menus and functions. And speaking of menus and functions, the Ming's operating system offers an easy-to-use, Linux-based interface that makes navigating between entertainment, contact, document and other functions a breeze. You'll also find two control buttons, as well as a navigation joystick, below the display.
The Ming also supports MicroSD card expandability, which allows you to add up to 2 GB of extra storage to the device -- plenty of room for games, movies, and documents. There's a standard 2.5 mm headset jack, and a built-in mini-USB connector makes it easy to connect the Ming to your computer or other devices. Bluetooth wireless technology lets talk freely on a wireless headset or sync up seamlessly with your PC and other compatible Bluetooth devices. You can even print your favorite pictures wirelessly with the Ming's Bluetooth printing capability.
Calling Features The Ming has all the latest calling features folks have come to expect from a high-end handset. The built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. As mentioned, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible. Plus, you can connect a stereo Bluetooth wireless headset and listen to your favorite music without any wires. Meanwhile, the ringer and picture ID system makes it easy to identify your most common callers. And last but not least, a vibrate mode allows you to receive calls in silence.
Messaging, Internet, and PDA Tools The Ming covers the messaging bases with support for text and MMS messaging, as well as IM-based communications with MSN Messenger. There's also a complete email client that allows you to receive and view PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint attachments. The email client supports POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols. An integrated browser lets you view complete HTML pages or surf the wireless Web via WAP 2.0.
On the PDA front, the Ming comes with a powerful calendar and contacts system that makes it easy to stay in touch with your important contacts while organizing your schedule. And because the Ming supports the SyncML synchronization standard, you can easily sync your PC-based contacts and schedule with the Ming's personal information management system. Other tools include an integrated business card scanner, a calculator, an alarm, a voice memo recorder, and a to-do list. You can use the Ming's advanced handwriting recognition to quickly and accurately enter information.
Entertainment The Ming's 2-megapixel camera features a macro mode for getting great closeups. You can also capture video clips; capture length is limited to a staggering two hours. Use the built-in RealPlayer application to view your videos, as well as videos you've got stored on a memory card. The integrated music player supports MP3, WAV, AMR, WMA, and AAC+ digital music formats. There's also a stereo FM radio.
If you're into mobile gaming, the Ming has you covered there, too. The phone ships with one game, Extreme Air Snowboarding.
Vital Statistics The Motorola A1200 Ming weighs 4.30 ounces and measures 3.77 x 2.04 x .85 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 7.4 hours of digital talk time, and up to 170 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS frequencies. This phone comes with a one-year warranty from a third party provider.

Sony Ericsson W610i in Black/Orange GSM Unlocked Cell Phone Review

I had this phone for a long time and let my friend borrow it for about a year.
My friend literally beat the phone up and it works perfectly fine (About 3 years of use!). The battery life is also still amazing!
Once you get used to the phone's UI and all it's little features, you will absolutely love it. I am an avid Android user. I had the G1 for a year. When my G1 got stolen, the W610i was my back up. Switching back to a basic phone wasn't easy but I fell in love with this phone again once I relearned the UI.
If you hate bulky smart phones and hate tiny basic phones, this phone is smack dab in the middle. Data plans on phones are overrated.
Great basic phone functions.
Camera is really slow.
Great music player.
Very bright flashlight.
Very loud speaker.
Doesn't use microSD.
Front buttons are PERFECT. They never stick or wear and are easily replaceable if you decided to buy a new housing.

Motorola Rokr E8 (Unlocked, Intl. Version) no U.S. Warranty Review

Motorola Rokr E8 (Unlocked, Intl. Version) no U.S. Warranty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this phone for about 4 months now and I have to say that I really like it. The look of the phone is really appealing, and the interface is really quite new and different. Navigation is pretty smooth and intuitive (when it isn't lagging, more on that later) and I love the way the keys change depending on what mode your in. Call quality is crisp and loud. The display is very good quality and album images and text appear clear and sharp. The mp3 player on this phone is one of the best I've heard. I connect it to my car stereo and, as far as audio is concerned, it even blows away the Creative Zen I had before. Even the built in speakers are pretty good and don't sound as hollow and tiny as other phones.
Now for the bad. The reason I only gave this phone 3 stars is because of two pretty big issues. The first is the 2mp camera. For 2megapixels this produces some awuful shots. The colors are washed out, blurry, and grainy no matter what light you're in. Even the 1.3mp camera on my TMobile Dash took better pictures. Much much better pictures. The other issue is this ... the phone has 2GB of built in memory, but beware of using it to store songs. The built in memory is touchy at best. Some songs transferred to the phone mem just flat out wouldn't work. On top of that, putting songs on the phone memory causes the phone to experience some serious lagging. And it can get pretty bad, even hanging and lagging during calls. Forget calling any company that asks you to hit a series of mumbers to get to the right department, and punching in something like an account # is a nightmare. The only reason I didn't mark off heavily for this feature is because if you put songs on the micro sd only this seems to solve the problem. But you do have to set the phone to keep the phone memory seperate from the memory card. If it shares then it's the same issue.
So, a good mp3 phone, cool interface, but bad pictures and make sure you upgrade the free 1gb micro sd stick because the 2GB on the phone is pretty useless. Maybe a firmware upgrade will fix that later.

Sony Ericsson W580i Unlocked GSM Cell Phone Review

Sony Ericsson W580i Unlocked GSM Cell Phone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned this phone for 2 1/2 years. Over all I really like this phone and would buy it again. But, there are some faults that many might not like.
Likes - size (smaller than most smart phones and fits in my front pocket), It's mostly just a phone (with an MP3 player and camera) I don't need or want a smart phone, it's lasted 2 1/2 years and going.
Dislikes - the charger connector and head phone connector (I have had many issues making sure the Sony connector is connected and charging, need to clean the terminal with a small brush and jiggle and press it into place. You cannot use a standard headphone to listen to music. Keys might be small for some if you text a lot. Uses a Sony micro SD card, not the standard micro SD.
Overall - I will buy another one because it works for my needs, and lasted way beyond the other cell phones in my household.

Got immediately going with this phone.. WiFi capability is awesome.. easy setup.. quick connection...pop3 email support is easy to configure.. still loading up the 8GB memory with songs and softwares.. its like having a hand held computer... bought this phone over blackberry Pearl and a hacked-iphone. Totally worth it.. Graphics are too good and 3-D sound quality is awesome. There is some lag in starting applications (eg: Yahoo Go!) but it is not significant given the size of certain applications. Fun to play Fifa on it... visit n81 blogs for more... dont pay extra for brown color.. it is hardly visible.. the black face plate is stunning...battery life is good too.. needs charging after 3-4 days of use...

I liked everything that I read about this phone and as reviewers often say: I really wanted it to work. But: 1) While I am able to make calls, send text, and take decent photographs...the phone will not access the internet via ATT network. I know that if I talk to the right tech people, they can get the software to work properly. But this was just one malfunction.2) The phone only displays the 3-digit area code for numbers that are on the call-log, the phone memory, and the sim memory. It will dial the right numbers and tell you the right names if the number is saved, but there is no way to view all 10 digits.Customer support at Nokia could only offer me a send-in for repair and not a way to instal working software on this brand-new phone. ATT tech guys were stumped; they had not seen anything like this. It's too bad because the 6500c has the perfect design and everything else works beautifully. I would not want to risk ordering another one...I'm thinking that this deal of having problems with unlocked phones is common, based on all of the reviews that I have read for the myriad of unlocked makes and models.Think I'll try to buy a phone at ATT and have them unlock it there so i may travel, if that is possible.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen--U.S. Version with Warranty (White) Review

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen--U.S. Version with Warranty (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
The unit is dead simple to get started with. Took my simcard from my ATT locked phone and dropped it in, and I was ready to go within a minute of opening the box.
The "Symbian S60v5" OS is quite advanced and has features that the iPhone doesn't have.
- multitasking: you can stream Last.FM and chat on IM (try using Pandora and AOL on the iPhone)
- theme/skinning without hacking the phone
- tethering without jailbreaking the phone
- Flash for web content (not full Flash 10, so no Hulu, but YouTube works).
- You can get apps from other places than the App Store (more like the Mac than the iPhone). Just download the .sisx file, and it installs.
Coming from a locked AT&T phone, the biggest benefit is the lack of crapware - no hardware shortcuts to "MeDiAnEt" and when you click on music, it doesn't prompt you to buy ringtones from AT&T. I'll never go back to carrier-subsidized phones.
Cons:
Battery is small - it'll last a full day of moderately heavy use (calls, email, web, music), but expect to plug it in every night.
Nokia's Ovi Store is not nearly as advanced as Apple's iTunes Store yet.
- Ovi Music is not available in the US
- Apps are rarely found in the App Store, because most developers would rather you download it from them directly (like Mac, not iPhone).
The phone update process is not as intuitive as the iPhone process - Small updates can be done from the device itself, but larger updates need a Windows PC (I used VMWare Fusion on my Mac)
The included micro-USB cord is quite short.
Up to you:
The device doesn't have battery-hungry things like 3G or GPS. If these are things that you need, look at the bigger brother - the 5800.

I work as a dive instructor, and I have lost count of the cell phones that have either been 'drowned' or salt damaged in the past 6 years since I started my business.
This phone is awesome, it's waterproof as long as the port that covers the battery charging access is firmly in place, so if it should 'go for a swim it's much more likely to survive. My phone has already had a couple of water encounters that would have killed lesser phones.
The unit is sealed so I don't have to worry about using it with salty / dirty / oily hands as it can be rinsed off. The case fits nicely in the hand, and the keys are good size.
I would recommend this phone for boating, dirty or wet out door pursuits, and even mechanics and other folks involved in jobs where your phone is likely to get mucky!
The battery has a pretty good life. The phone also has a torch, the only thing that it lacks is a bottle opener!
So impressed am I that I have bought additional phones for my staff / business.

Nokia 5610 Xpress Music Red Quadband Unlocked Phone
This is my first phone with enough memory for my own personal music. I've had it now for three months and had only one minor issue and that was a software problem that could have resulted from a conflict with something I downloaded not guaranteed for this phone (Bluetooth related issue). Still under warranty, I simply tripped in to the nearest Nokia shop and it was fixed in no time with a software update for free.
Expandable memory allows you to horde up to 4g of A/V files or attach the headphone/antenna and tune in your favorite FM! Not crazy about the headphones, but you can plug your preferred into the jack. Has all the basics, calendar, calculator, etc that I was looking for. Also came pre-installed with Opera and it's not too shabby a browser considering the screen size. Buttons are smaller than what I'm used to but I've mostly used clam-shells up until now.
So far, I've been quite satisfied and recommend this versatile phone/entertainment package.
UPDATE: 02/22/2009 Ten months later and still very satisfied with this excellent phone! Still very happy about this purchase and it still doesn't show the usual wear-n-tear attributes liked rubbed off keypad! Love it!
